da boš znal/-a • napisati poročilo o svojem razredu

Reading A Read the text. How many of your reasons can you find?
This month we look at how the English language brings people together. Guang is Chinese. He’s fourteen and he’s learning English at school. About a billion people learn English as a foreign language. They use it in their job, when they travel abroad, when they go on the internet, or when they want to understand English films or songs. In China, more people are studying English at the moment than in any other country, and 100,000 native English speakers are currently teaching there.
ar n
Did you know that nearly a quarter of all the people on Earth can speak English? That’s nearly two billion people!
It’s difficult to be sure exactly how many people speak English as a second or foreign language. English is certainly the most common second or foreign language in the world. One estimate says that there are now three times more non-native English speakers than native English speakers! In India, for example, there are hundreds of different languages, so people often use English to communicate with each other.
jig
Tara’s from Perth, in Australia. English is her first language. About 450 million people speak English as a first language in countries like Britain, the USA, Australia and New Zealand. In fact, English is the official language of about fifty countries around the world.
kn
Sandro’s family come from Puerto Rico but now they live in New York, where Sandro was born. His first language is Spanish, but he speaks English fluently. About 54 million people in the USA come from Latin America – that’s 17% of the total population. They learn English as a second language because they live in an English-speaking country. Sandro usually speaks Spanish at home and with his Latin-American friends, but he speaks English at school.

ENGLISH WORLDWIDE!
English is the main language in international business, in science and technology, in sport and pop music. It is one of the languages used at meetings of the United Nations (the UN) and many other international organisations. It is also the main language of the internet. About 55% of websites are written in
English. The same is true of social media. More ‘tweets’ are written in English than any other language. But things are changing fast. For example, millions of people in China now use their own language on the internet. Chinese, Arabic, Russian and Spanish are all becoming more common, but English is still the most important ‘international’ language for most of us.
Language is a key to the outside world. It helps you to connect with other people. Research tells us that, by 2020, there will be 2 billion people learning English, so you aren’t alone! Italian 1.8% Portuguese 2.3% Chinese 3.3% French 4%
Polish 1.7%
Spanish 4.6% Japanese 5% German 6%
English 55%
Russian 9%
