MOUNT PEAK WINERY
Our story begins more than a century ago, culminating with the revival of Mount Peak Winery, one of California’s few remaining ghost wineries. Honouring this great place felt significant and deeply personal to winemaker Mark Williams. He set out to create wines that pay tribute to the extraordinary beauty of the ghost winery and to capture its prevailing spirit – the capacity to withstand the forces of time.
Surrounding Mount Peak Winery are the red rugged hills of Monte Rosso Vineyard where brilliant, iron rich soil is set against a backdrop of piercing blue skies. When Mark first visited the property in 2006, he had just a handful of vintages under his belt, but he knew he was encountering something special. He had started his winemaking career in California’s flat and fertile Central Valley, where he grew up amongst grapevines and learned about the craft from his viticulturalist father.
Striding the vineyard rows, Mark came upon Mount Peak Winery and resolved to make wines that embody the soul of the ghost winery’s storied past and the essence of its spectacular surroundings. He uses these elements to act as his muse, building upon Monte Rosso Vineyard as a fruit source and finding other vineyards that inspire him in the same way.
Mount Peak Winery wines are named for vineyard blocks near the ghost winery. Sentinel Cabernet Sauvignon, denotes the shield-shaped block marking the vineyard’s entrance, occupying the space between earth and sky. Rattlesnake Zinfandel pays homage to the snakes that sun themselves at the vineyard’s highest point. Gravity Red Blend is named for a remote block where grapevines cling to a steep slope terminating at the mouth of a canyon. Inspired by this celebrated setting, our portfolio of wines is a tribute to California’s fabled winemaking history and the vineyards where they are grown.
