E. & J. GALLO WINERY

PURVEYORS OF FINE WINE

Dear Friends, Dear Partners,

It is a great pleasure to introduce our new Luxury Brands brochure for International and share with you the latest additions to our carefully curated portfolio.

2023 has been a special year for E. &. J Gallo Winery, as the company celebrates its 90th anniversary and commemorates the vision of its founders, brothers Ernest & Julio Gallo, who back in 1933 established their own business in Modesto, California, at the repeal of Prohibition. Since then, our hallmark has been an unwavering commitment to exceptional quality, exemplified by the significant investments Gallo has made over the last 15 years into wineries and prime vineyards across-California’s premier wine regions. The coveted vineyard sites within the portfolio — including the legendary Stagecoach Vineyard in Napa, the acclaimed Sleepy Hollow Vineyard in the Santa Lucia Highlands, and the historic Monte Rosso Vineyard in Sonoma Valley - give Gallo access to the best fruit California has to offer, ranging from diverse mountain sites in Napa Valley to cool, coastal havens in Sonoma County and the Central Coast.

2024 will also see the addition of two new world-renowned brands to our luxury portfolio as we launch the recently acquired Rombauer Vineyards and Massican internationally. For over four decades, the Rombauer brand and family have built a reputation around quality and integrity. It is an iconic brand rooted in distinctive and respected wines. Since its founding in 2009, Massican has been a “white wines only” winery – a rarity in California – that prides itself on transparency and ethical environmental practices. Beyond making wine, Dan Petroski has been a thought leader regarding the future of California wine. Together, Rombauer Vineyards and Massican will offer our luxury consumers further opportunity to discover the diversity of our portfolio and explore the beauty and complexity of California wines.

We hope you will enjoy our collection of wines and we thank all of you for the work you do to bring our wines to life. Our dedicated team of luxury wine professionals are here to support, so do not hesitate to get in touch.

LOUIS M. MARTINI

A Napa Valley Legacy

PORTFOLIO OF LUXURY WINES | 07

LOUIS M. MARTINI

Our family has been crafting world-class Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa’s finest vineyards since 1933.

Louis M. Martini voyaged to America with a vision of making the very best wines in the world. He started his storied journey with a simple premise – the best grapes make the best wines. This led him to Napa Valley, the most coveted winemaking region in California.

The premise turned into passion, one that passed down through three generations of Martini winemakers. Today, the legacy and tradition carries on at our historic winery, where we are dedicated to the craft of Cabernet Sauvignon. A product of passion and perseverance that Louis instilled nearly a century ago.

We were the first winery built in Napa after the repeal of the Prohibition in 1933, and remained the only newly built estate until Mondavi in the 1960’s. Since our establishment, we have dedicated ourselves to finding the most coveted vineyards with the finest grapes. The Martini legacy has long been a testament to the family’s

dedication and love of wine. A journey which started in Genoa and would lead Louis to San Francisco where the business was born. In the 90 years since Louis M. began the winery, we have committed ourselves to follow in his footsteps to ensure a standard of Cabernet Sauvignon excellence that’s head and shoulders above the rest. A true example of The American Dream, pursuing our passion with determination.

Our deep roots in Napa have afforded us long-lasting relationships with premier growers across a multitude of appellations. Monte Rosso Vineyard has been an estate property since 1938, consistently producing red varietals of unmistakable minerality and acidity. Perched in the Mayacamas Mountains 300 meters above the Sonoma Valley, Monte Rosso grows some of California’s oldest grapevines and most acclaimed Cabernet Sauvignon. Vineyard Manager Brenae Royal now tends to these historic vines with precision and care. Stagecoach Vineyard has been a blending component for Lot No. 1 for years, Martini enjoys ample access to its 600 acres of highly prized mountain fruit. Mark Williams, the fifth winemaker in Martini history, continues our legacy of superior craftsmanship in the cellar with a view to the future in modernized winegrowing techniques.

Robust and elegant, Lot No. 1, is the pinnacle of our portfolio. Its history dates back over 70 years when Louis M. Martini began a practice that would become a hallmark of his winery.

While tasting through Cabernet ageing in the cellar, he began selecting exceptional lots, choosing ones that showcased the essence of Cabernet Sauvignon character and designating them to craft his finest wine. Today, this flagship wine comprises a selection of the finest lots from some of Napa’s most prestigious sites including Stagecoach, Atlas Peak, Howell Mountain, Stags Leap and Oakville. Lot No.1 is Cabernet Sauvignon at its peak form of expression. “Year after year, Lot No.1 showcases standout blocks from iconic vineyards in Napa Valley, resulting in a blend that exhibits power, depth and intensity with a discernible measure of polish and elegance.” - Winemaker Michael Eddy.

One of California’s most prized locations for wine grapes, Monte Rosso Vineyard rolls across steep, rugged terrain in the majestic Mayacamas Mountains nearly 1,300 feet above the Sonoma Valley. With some vines dating back to the 1880s, this historic vineyard has some of the oldest grapevines in California.

The Los Niños block of Cabernet Sauvignon, planted in 1940, is the oldest Cabernet in California and a key component in the Monte Rosso Cabernet Sauvignon. Monte Rosso is named for its rich, red volcanic soils and our Cabernet Sauvignon showcases the distinct site-specific characteristics of this most esteemed mountain site, yielding wines driven by brilliant acidity and distinct notes of spice. Monte Rosso wines age beautifully, developing remarkable earth-driven nuances over time.

MONTE ROSSO VINEYARD CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Old vine Zinfandel from our revered Monte Rosso Vineyard in the majestic Mayacamas Mountains. Planted in 1893, these historic Zinfandel vines are some of the oldest in California today and they continue to yield exceptional fruit with deep concentration.

The vineyard’s mix of high altitude, position above the fog, low-yielding vines and ideal western exposure produces wines with a unique sense of terroir. Though yields are small, about 1.5 to 3 tons per acre, the old gnarled vines produce exceptional fruit resulting in an age-worthy powerhouse wine that retains a sense of elegance and polish. Vibrant red fruit is complemented by the vineyard’s hallmark overtones of spice and dusty earth.

For more than 90 years, Louis M. Martini Winery has crafted world class Cabernet Sauvignon from the exceptional vineyards of Napa Valley. Since the beginning, our founder believed in a simple, honest premise: The best grapes make the best wines.

Today, this legacy continues at the historic winery in St Helena with an acclaimed collection of unforgettable Cabernet Sauvignon wines including this signature expression. Grapes are handpicked from top vineyards before each lot is aged and meticulously evaluated separately. The result is a wine as rich in flavour as it is in history.

ROMBAUER

Flying and winemaking are both mystical, magical things.

PORTFOLIO OF LUXURY WINES | 17

ROMBAUER VINEYARDS

Founded in 1980 by Koerner and Joan Rombauer, Rombauer Vineyards have been producing acclaimed wines from Napa Valley, Sonoma County, the Sierra Foothills, and the Santa Lucia Highlands for over 40 years.

In 1972, former commercial airline pilot, Koerner Rombauer and his wife Joan Rombauer moved their two children to Napa Valley, where they fell in love with the landscape and winegrowing. They were already well acquainted with the natural relationship between food and wine –Koerner’s great aunt Irma wrote the internationally renowned cookbook, The Joy of Cooking, and his German ancestors had deep roots in the winegrowing region of Rheingau.

In 1984 they released their first Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon. Four decades later, the winery has become widely acclaimed with over seventy 90+ point awards across Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Noir varietals. Under the direction of Richie Allen, the Vice President of Viticulture and Winemaking and Winemaker Luke Clayton, Rombauer Vineyards combines traditional viticultural and winemaking practices with the best available technology to ensure the highest quality wine production. This has created spectacular wines such as the Carneros Chardonnay, named one of the Top 100 Wines of the World five times by Wine Spectator and is ranked among the Top 10 Chardonnays for 17 consecutive years in Wine & Spirits Restaurant Wine Poll.

At Rombauer Vineyards we believe it’s an honor and responsibility to be good stewards of our vineyards. We use sustainable practices in the vineyards and at the winery to protect and preserve the land for future generations, earning certifications as California Sustainable Certified Vineyard & Winery and Napa Green Winery Certified. Today, Rombauer Vineyards is still operated with members of the second and third generations of the Rombauer family, and carries on Koerner Rombauer’s values of gratitude through family-style hospitality.’

First released in 1982, the 2022 vintage of Rombauer Chardonnay celebrates 40 years of this iconic wine. Our Chardonnay, beloved by customers around the world, is sourced from the Carneros region where the San Pablo Bay meets the southern end of Napa and Sonoma valleys.

The cool climate and specific soils of this region provide ideal conditions for this quintessential Carneros Chardonnay with the Rombauer hallmarks of intense fruit flavors balanced by fresh acidity. The grapes were gently whole-cluster pressed while the fruit was still cool. The juice was pumped to tank to cold-settle overnight before it was racked to barrel for primary and malolactic fermentations. The lees were stirred every two weeks to give the wine rich flavors and a creamy texture.

SONOMA COUNTY & NAPA VALLEY SAUVIGNON BLANC

This Sauvignon Blanc has quickly become one of Rombauer Vineyards most beloved wines, consistently adored by both consumers and critics. The fruit for this wine comes from premium growing sites in Sonoma and Napa counties that offer abundant sunshine yet moderate temperatures – ideal conditions for cultivating delicious Sauvignon Blanc.

The grapes were gently whole cluster pressed while the fruit was still cool. The majority of the juice was fermented in stainless steel tanks, while the remainder fermented in a combination of French oak barrels and concrete tanks, imparting weight and texture to the finished wine. The wine was bottled with a screw cap closure to preserve the freshness and vibrancy found in this Sauvignon Blanc.

Zinfandel is our tribute to California wine history. Its fruit was sourced from family-owned vineyards, all located in the state’s oldest and most revered wine regions, some of which are over 100 years old.

This wine comes from select vineyards in four top growing regions: Amador County (50 %), El Dorado County (25 %), Lake County (20 %), and Napa County (5 %). The grapes were carefully destemmed and optically sorted to ensure only perfect fruit made it into the wine. A cold soak extracted colour and flavour before primary fermentation began in tank. The wine was gently basket-pressed and then racked to oak barrels for malolactic fermentation and aging.

Since producing our first vintage of Merlot in 1983, we’ve been committed to making the best possible expression of the variety. Our Merlot is grown in estateowned and grower-partner vineyards on the Napa side of Carneros, where the clay soils are similar to those of Bordeaux’s right bank. The cool climate allows the thin-skinned grapes to gradually develop flavour and tannins while retaining natural acidity.

The grapes were carefully destemmed and optically sorted to ensure only perfect fruit made it into the wine. ORIN SWIFT

A collection of art and storytelling that comes to life in one-of-a-kind wines

PORTFOLIO OF LUXURY WINES | 27

ORIN SWIFT

Wine will always be core to our creative output, but it won’t be limited by it. We make films, publications, art, events, products, destinations – anything required to bring creative ideas to life.

Orin Swift is a collection of art and storytelling that comes to life in one-ofa-kind labels and wine styles. Led by legendary winemaker Dave Phinney, Orin Swift’s portfolio is known as much for its creative and evocative expression of art on the front of the bottle as it is the bold, yet finessed styling within the bottle. Dave’s passion for wine dates to 1995 when he went to Florence, Italy to spend a semester ‘studying.’ During that time, he was introduced to wine and how it’s made, and he was hooked. After graduating university a few years later, he started working for Robert Mondavi Winery as a harvest worker. It was there he decided that if he was going to work this hard, it needed to eventually be for himself. Fueled by a passion that fuses

fine art and wine with street art and what he calls “dirt farming,” Dave founded Orin Swift Cellars in 1998. The name Orin Swift comes from Dave’s family, combining his father’s middle name, Orin, and mother’s maiden name, Swift. In just a few years, Orin Swift’s striking blends and arresting labels on wines, such as 8 Years in the Desert and Mercury Head, drew an international fan base that clamors to catch every release.

Orin Swift wines offer unique, incomparable storytelling behind every bottle, providing a non-traditional offering in the historically traditional luxury wine segment. Dave and his winemaking team are dedicated to expressing geographic diversity in their sourcing, creating wine blends from a range of California’s premier sites – predominantly Napa Valley. Dave sets his sights on small lots within the most coveted growing regions while ensuring that only fruit of the highest quality makes it into the final blend, resulting in a portfolio of wines that appeal to a variety of senses. Every wine in the portfolio, from the vineyard source to the distinct artwork adorning the label, offers a unique point of view while creating a heartskipping impression.

Mercury Head is our physical manifestation of history, land and art in a bottle of wine. Adorned with the rare Mercury dime, this quintessential Napa Cabernet speaks to location and overdelivers on quality.

Each dime has lived through at least 76 years of history while winemaking in the Napa Valley has existed longer. This wine brings those together in a unique way — a synthesis à la Orin Swift. We are extremely fortunate to have access to vineyards of excellent pedigree, which when brought together, combine to create a wine of intensity, nuance and complexity. Profound yet classic, our flagship wine encompasses our winemaking philosophy and overall ethos.

A

tale of juxtaposition, a weathered farm hand and a delicate butterfly (Papillon in French), extends to the wine itself – a Bordeaux blend that is delicate yet brawny, nuanced yet bold.

From the mountain tops of Atlas Peak to the gravelly soils of St. Helena and everywhere in between, the resulting blend elicits a dialectic found on the label: the sensory introduction to Papillon is overwhelming and breathtaking; yet, as the wine opens, it transforms slowly into a wine of elegance and opulence in one. It is truly the epitome of our style of winemaking, capable of converting even the staunchest of Bordeaux-philes.

Abstract is a wine that represents all of California – all of the pieces, climates and features that tell a story of the state. Dave starts with over 100 different lots of wine, searching for the right components of the blend. Individually, they’re good wines, but together, they tell a full, complex story, like a collage.

Abstract, in its own way, is an abstract of our winemaking mission and ethos at Orin Swift. It will always have our signature approach, comprised of fruit from quality vineyards across California and creates conversations — be it about the wine or the distinctive label. In fact, it was while flying between vineyards across continents, Dave Phinney would spend hours ripping out images from magazines to piece together the Abstract label, the complex layers of the collage echoing the finessed styling of the wine within. For those new to Orin Swift, Abstract is a beloved starting point on a journey with us.

Inspired by a National Geographic photo of a mummified priest, Palermo was created to evoke a power, dignity and reverence that epitomises Napa Cabernet.

Synonymous with the Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon is the most planted grape varietal in the region. From the valley floor to the mountain tops, we source fruit that expresses individual terroir and produce individual lots that have a sense of place. Palermo checks all the boxes — classic aromatics, lush and rich body, and puckering tannins that will age in a short amount of time.

Designed to catch you off guard, label & wine alike, Machete isn’t a typical wine. A Petite Sirah based blend, it packs a punch with a lingering delicacy.

The tannins remind you what it’s like to feel, and the ink will put a smile on your face. Our simple goal with Machete is to elevate Petite Sirah to the main stage and let it express its own attitude. Robust, dominant and unapologetic, the wine creates its own gravity, pulling all towards it.

Slander is the union of California

Pinot Noir made in the Orin

Swift signature style delivering a bold and expressive wine.

Staying humble and letting the grapes do the talking is how we get better at winemaking every vintage. Pinot Noir requires even more humility, especially in the vineyards — when the grapes are ready, they’re ready. This label goes back to Dave’s time working at another Napa Valley winery. When the winemaking team collected samples, they put a piece of duct tape across the bottle and wrote in sharpie what was in the bottle. He loved the look and it inspired this label.

MANNEQUIN CALIFORNIA CHARDONNAY

Fashion goes through cycles with vintage becoming modern and contemporary becoming stale – all the while, the mannequin stays relevant.

In similar ways, Chardonnay is going through its own evolution; the butter-bombs of the past are giving way to nervy, acidforward expressions of the varietal. Staying relevant and being true to our style is the goal of Mannequin — a balanced form of Chardonnay that isn’t overly oaky but has the trendy nuance of our times.

BLANK STARE

RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY SAUVIGNON BLANC

Defined by bright fruit tones and a fresh, lively palate, Blank Stare embraces the cooler Russian River Valley, delivering an Orin Swift twist to Sauvignon Blanc.

Blank Stare has always been a favourite around Orin Swift. So, bringing it back after a pause is quite exciting. Sourced from Laguna Ranch and MacMurray vineyards, the wine is zesty and aromatic, with notes of Granny Smith apple, guava and key lime. Framed by youthful acidity and complemented by white pepper, frangipani and minerality.

Dave’s grand return to Zinfandel after eight years away, 8 Years in the Desert is a series of eight labels released over eight vintages.

Being stranded in a desert leaves a lot to be desired — how to get back home, where to find food, water and shelter, and thoughts of survival. For eight years in the early 2010s, Orin Swift Cellars was barred from making any Zinfandel wines. From the grape that started everything, the ‘desert’ gave us an opportunity to explore the diverse range of California’s grape varietals. But, as soon as those eight years were up, we had a plan in place to pay homage to our home. Anchored by this distinctly Californian grape varietal, we have been able to source fruit from across the state and craft a wine that shows off our style.

L’USINE
The French word for ‘The Factory.’ It is an homage to all the Warhols of the world
PORTFOLIO OF LUXURY WINES | 43

L’USINE

Andy Warhol’s iconic studio, ‘The Factory’, was a gathering place for drag queens, rock stars, and brilliant artists.

Inspired by his studio, l’usine translates to ‘The Factory’ in French. The name paying tribute to those who desire something against the mould. Dave, honouring his rebel within, created a portfolio for the ‘Warhol’s’ of the world. L’usine is Dave Phinney’s continued passion and journey to master Pinot Noir. Sourced from some of the best vineyards he chooses in any given vintage, these wines express the artistry of the winemaking process. To honour the rebel within, the front labels display art rather than displaying the grape variety or its origin which is typical in this category. The labels speak to the ‘Warhol’s’ of the world and reflect the personality of each bottle.

Visionary winemaker, Dave Phinney lives and produces wine in Napa Valley, but his interests truly span both the globe and various trades. His first foray in the wine industry was in 1997, working as a Napa Valley harvest intern. Dave quickly discovered if he were going to work that hard, he’d knew it would eventually have

to be for himself. The following year he set out on his own and created the now internationally-celebrated Orin Swift Cellars. For over 20 years, Dave’s ongoing well of creativity has yet to show signs of drought. His innovative wine blends and continuous stream of imaginative labels have solidified universal acclaim, hailed for both the quality and creativity of his approach. With a collection of diverse, mysterious wine brands, Dave looks to tells a new story with every bottle.

While best known for his full-bodied and boldly flavoured reds based on Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, and Cabernet, Dave Phinney has been experimenting with Pinot Noir since 2005. He was inspired by the challenging nature of this varietal and wanted to master the craft. Whereas Pinot Noir’s are traditionally produced to allow the terroir to shine, Dave’s style tends to yield big and bold wines where fruit trumps earth. L’usine is Dave’s artistic studio where he continues to hone his craft and produce exceptional Pinot Noirs from top terroirs in California, and beyond. There is a battle within Dave’s representation of Pinot where he is trying to find that perfect contrast between boldness yet elegance, and terroir yet his own artistic expressions.

L’usine Annapolis Ridge pays tribute to both this iconic, isolated vineyard and the “Warhol’s” of the world. The culmination of Dave Phinney’s creative approach to Pinot Noir a battle of perfect contrast between boldness yet elegance, terroir and artistic expression.

The Annapolis Ridge Pinot Noir breaks tradition with its unique label, reminding its audience that this Pinot Noir is not your traditional Pinot style. Annapolis Ridge Vineyard is located 5 miles off the Sonoma Coast. Marine fog arrives earlier and lingers later here than in most other parts of Sonoma County, which results in cooler vine temperatures and, therefore, wines that are naturally higher in acidity and freshness. Its remote and iconic location is similar to the individualism and beauty of those in Warhol’s factory. The factory was a place for outcasts to thrive. Isolated from the conventional. In this space, all were welcome and all were beautiful.

PINOT NOIR

Sleepy Hollow Vineyard, an iconic vineyard located in the Santa Lucia Highlands AVA, is known for cool morning fog and warm afternoon sunshine, yielding complex and beautiful Pinot Noir.

The very cool temperatures from morning fog and afternoon winds, combined with low seasonal rainfall of less than 380 per year, results in one of the coolest and longest growing seasons in California for Pinot Noir. One of the first vineyards to be planted in the Santa Lucia Highlands in 1972, Sleepy Hollow Vineyard was recognised as a “Grand Cru” by Wine Enthusiast magazine in 2016 for its peerless reputation, terroir and wines. The label artwork is a reflection of this wine’s personality: complex, distinct, and powerful.

L’usine Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir expresses elegance and contrast. The label hones in on the power of colour, captivating the vibrant and alluring beauty of the “Warhol’s” of the world, as well as this Pinot Noir’s style.

We source grapes from 4 distinct vineyards in Santa Barbara County’s most prestigious cool-climate AVA: Sta. Rita Hills. Despite being the most southerly appellation in the Central Coast for Pinot Noir, it is also one of California’s coolest regions due to its transverse orientation, which allows cool fog and wind to enter en masse into the valley without having to meander through a river or gap. At the same time, there is plenty of warmer temperatures and bright sunshine once the fog burns off to sufficiently ripen the fruit. Soils here are varied, but mostly well-drained, marine-based sand, clay, shale and limestone. Overall, Pinot Noir is ripe and red fruit dominant with bright acidity, grippy tannins and elegance on the palate.

PAHLMEYER

A dream to rival the best of Bordeaux
PORTFOLIO OF LUXURY WINES | 53
Pahlmeyer begins with its namesake - Jayson Pahlmeyer. A bold, irrepressible spirit, Jayson was a trial attorney by trade who had a passion for wine.

Following his dream, Jayson reconnected with a longtime friend whom he met in law school and happened to be the owner of a 55-acre site in southeast Napa Valley. The two shared a devotion to Jayson’s audacious dream of creating a ‘California blend that would rival the best of Bordeaux.’ The key, they were sure, lay in planting the finest French clones of the red Bordeaux varieties - a considerable roadblock since importing clones is an international offense. After three years of trial and exploration, they smuggled their ‘suitcase clones’ of the five Bordeaux varieties through Canada. Planted in 1981, the French cuttings adjusted to their new home at a snail’s pace. In 1986, Randy Dunn, one of California’s foremost winemakers, asked to purchase the entire crop which Jayson agreed to on one condition: that Randy make Jayson’s first ‘Pahlmeyer’ Red Napa Valley Bordeaux blend.

Today Winemaker Katie Vogt carries on Pahlmeyer’s pedigree with expertise, artistry, and keen understanding. Building on the eminence Pahlmeyer has earned over three decades, Katie approaches each new vintage as an opportunity to honour the extraordinary success of her predecessors while continuously raising the bar. Perfect balance requires risk and extremes while demanding calibration and calculation. At Pahlmeyer, balance comes with rugged mountain top vineyards and meticulous fieldwork. It’s achieved through precision winemaking merged with masterful blending. Balance occurs with time in the finest barrels and age in the bottle, beautifully revealing itself with the pull of the cork, vintage after vintage.

Pahlmeyer’s flagship wine is a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc, sourced exclusively from mountain and hillside vineyards in the Napa, Atlas Peak, and Rutherford AVAs.

Understanding Pahlmeyer requires understanding the wine within the context of Napa. When establishing the vineyard, Jayson Pahlmeyer sought to make a “California Mouton,” inspired by Chateau Mouton Rothschild, one of the richest and most generous of the First Growths. Pahlmeyer achieves this through mountainsourcing and careful vineyard management. Their vineyards above the fog line see less rain, more sun, and have larger diurnal temperature swings. As winemaker Katie Vogt says, “we’re taking vineyards to the edge,” meaning they’re taking vineyard risks to build depth, opulence, and structure. Proprietry Red represents Pahlmeyer’s most powerful and structured expression, with an ageing capacity for 30 years or more.

Pahlmeyer’s Merlot is a plump and juicy expression sourced from high-elevation vineyards. Fruit for this wine comes from Waters Ranch and Rancho Chimiles, which ranges from 900 – 1000 feet above sea level.

One of the oldest ranches in Napa County, Rancho Chimiles is owned and operated by the Wilson family. The ranch straddles the ridge between Wooden Valley and northern Gordon Valley, and includes benchland in both valleys. The original land grant was awarded by Governor Pio Pico, the last Governor of Mexican California, to Jose Ignacio Berryessa in 1846, and purchased by William Gordon and Nathan Coombs in 1851.

Napa Valley Chardonnay that shows the richness of its highquality vineyard sources, paired with an energy and freshness that sets it apart, along with a saline, savoury finish.

Fruit for this wine comes from several vineyard sources, including the Antica vineyard in the Atlas Peak AVA (owned by the Antinori family) which ranges in altitude from 1400-1800 feet above sea level, as well as the Haynes vineyard, which was planted in 1967 and houses some of the oldest Chardonnay vines in Napa Valley. “In Napa, you’re focusing on the long term,” says winemaker Katie Vogt. “To succeed, you learn the nuances and appreciate the personalities of the sites. We commit to a clear vision, then we are relentless in bringing that to life.”

Extraordinary wine from the iconic Napa Valley and pioneering Sonoma Coast

JAYSON BY PAHLMEYER
PORTFOLIO OF LUXURY WINES | 63

JAYSON BY PAHLMEYER

Jayson Wines were first produced in 1992 as a second label by their eponymous founder, Jayson Pahlmeyer.

A trial lawyer by trade, Jayson developed a passion for wine while in law school. Not one to take his passions lightly, Jayson quickly found a few connections, a few smuggled grapevines from Bordeaux, and got his start with Pahlmeyer Wines in 1986.

Pahlmeyer Wines had earned a reputation for their big, bold taste crafted from prestigious mountain fruit in the Napa Valley. Everything was running smoothly, so Jayson and his winemaking team were ready to look beyond their current portfolio. The 1992 vintage had been particularly exceptional, so they decided to launch a second label that would complement the Pahlmeyer portfolio: Jayson by Pahlmeyer. Today, Jayson offers an expanded portfolio of wines known for their rich, high quality taste that are an homage to their founder’s huge personality, humour and joy for living.

Jayson Wines source from a wider array of vineyards than Pahlmeyer, but still maintain high quality standards and focus on mountain fruit. The integration of some valley floor fruit helps round out the tannins to make the wines more approachable in their youth. Winemaking typically focuses on a minimalist approach in the cellar. There is often shorter oak ageing than the wines’ Pahlmeyer counterparts to offer the ability to enjoy at a younger age.

“Balance in the vineyard is crucial for our red varietals, and I carefully restrict yields and manage canopies to create just the right dappled sunlight to achieve ideal ripeness.”
KATIE VOGT - WINEMAKER

In the cellar, Vogt starts with a core of ripe, concentrated mountaintop fruit, and seeks out blending components to turn up the wine to its fullest potential — plush, concentrated, and fruit driven. Using intuition and feel, Vogt seeks to achieve a complete wine with nuance and intricacy, a rich, approachable texture, and impeccable balance. Heavily toasted Taransaud imparts counterpoised structure and texture while retaining fruit purity.

“There’s a luxurious texture I aim for with our Jayson Cabernet, selecting blocks of our mountain fruit that

deliver concentration and intensity while possessing plush fruit and a polished tannin profile.”

These parcels are blended with rich, round fruit from the Rutherford valley floor and Atlas Peak foothills — the perfect balance of grip and juiciness. Jayson Cabernet is aged for about 15 months in 80% new Taransaud heavy toast oak to build incredible mouthfeel and structure, that matches our tannin profile, and supports our signature intensity.

“Jayson Chardonnay is a marriage of three distinctive Napa Valley regions: bright, elegant Carneros hillside; and rich, ripe St. Helena valley floor; with intense mountain fruit at its core.”
KATIE VOGT - WINEMAKER

Across our sites, we employ tunneling (pulling internal leaves) in our canopoy managment to increase airflow without risking berry integrity. The finished wine has a fresh and bright palate with beautiful aromatics and just enough intensity and richness to impart an unmistakable gravitas. Ageing in heavily toasted François Frères barrels allow pure fruit aromatics to be front and centre with a subtle butterscotch and salted caramel underscore.

“My intention with Jayson Sauvignon Blanc is to make a wine that is incredibly bright and energetic with a beautiful purity of fruit bolstered by a broad, textural mid palate.”

In the vineyard, the canopy is managed to encourage early ripening with acidity retention. Blending acid-driven valley floor fruit with intense, ripe fruit from our mountain vineyards that’s given longer hang time to fully evolve, a range of ripeness bringing nuance and detail. Lees are stirred just enough to impart a balancing richness while retaining freshness. The finished wine is a complete package of energy and crispness, complexity and depth.

J VINEYARDS

Striving

to translate the diversity of the Russian River Valley – from the cool, coastal locations to the bright, sun-drenched hillsides – to the bottle.

It all began with founder Judy Jordan. With a background in geology, Judy was fascinated with the diverse soils and climate of the Russian River Valley AVA in Sonoma County. She knew she wanted to be in the wine business like her father, founder of Jordan Winery. However, she wanted to do it differently, focusing on terroir and Burgundian varietals (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay) for both still and sparkling wines, as well as Pinot Gris. So, in 1986, she founded J Vineyards & Winery.

Judy’s pioneering spirit and welcoming hospitality are ever-present in the J Visitor Center, where guests can view soil samples from J’s estate vineyards in the Russian River Valley, taste both sides of the J portfolio, and indulge in award-winning

tasting experiences, including the Bubble Room, which is the only experience of its kind offered in Sonoma County, matching J wines with Executive Chef Carl Shelton’s local, seasonal pairings.

J Winemaker Nicole Hitchcock has been J’s head winemaker since 2015. Nicole is one of the few winemakers in the world with in-depth knowledge of producing both Traditional Method sparkling and high-quality still wines. Nicole’s winemaking philosophy begins with sourcing the best fruit from the best locations in Sonoma County and beyond. Diverse soils and cool, coastal microclimates create unique growing conditions to maximize flavour and expression within J’s portfolio. From there, Nicole and her team use a minimalist approach throughout winemaking and ageing for a true sense of place.

Whether it’s staying true to tradition by using the Traditional Method to craft J sparkling wines or keeping all lots separate from hand-harvest to bottling, Nicole pours her passion for this region into each vintage.

RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY CHARDONNAY

Comprised of fruit from the best possible sites across the J Vineyards & Winery collective, the Russian River Valley Chardonnay truly showcases the elegant, unique terroir of this cool-climate region.

Equally light on its feet and bold in structure, the wine weaves honeysuckle, citrus and candied lemon peel with a light touch of oak and a long, bright and lingering finish. Grapes are hand-harvested and gently pressed before barrell fermentation in French oak. In general, the wine undergoes ageing in barrell and malolactic sur lie fermentation, with each vineyard, block and clone kept separate until blending. An outstanding Chardonnay from Nicole Hitchcock, Wine Enthusiasts Winemaker of the Year 2022.

A symphony of stand-out sites across the J Vineyards & Winery vineyard collective, the Russian River Valley Pinot Noir flaunts the classic characteristics of this renowned region.

Crafted from up to 40 individual small lots, our Russian River Valley Pinot Noir offers a classic example of this renowned region. Opening with rich, flavourful notes of dark cherry, plum and ripe raspberry, while hints of earth, cocoa and clove add depth and nuance to the smooth, layered palate. TALBOTT

Estate-grown wines from the iconic Sleepy Hollow vineyard

PORTFOLIO OF LUXURY WINES | 83

TALBOTT VINEYARDS

At Talbott Vineyards, we focus exclusively on crafting estate-grown Chardonnay and Pinot Noir by marrying old-world Burgundian influence with new-world technique in Monterey County.

Our celebrated Sleepy Hollow Vineyard is located at the base of the Santa Lucia Highlands, one of the coolest wine-growing climates in California. Here, the extended morning fog and reliable maritime winds create the perfect conditions for wine growing, allowing the fruit a long hang time to produce rich flavours and spectacular acidity. Building on a nearly 40-year legacy of meticulous craftsmanship, Talbott Vineyards continues to produce highly acclaimed wines of distinction.

Talbott’s famed Sleepy Hollow Vineyard was described as a California Grand Cru Chardonnay vineyard by Wine Enthusiast magazine in 2016 for its ability to produce exceptional wines year-after-year, even under challenging conditions. More than any other vineyard, Sleepy Hollow has helped put Monterey and the Santa Lucia Highlands on the map as world-renowned winegrowing regions. Today, Sleepy Hollow’s River Road block is home to the winery’s state-of-the-art winemaking facility.

Vines at Sleepy Hollow grow in cool conditions with moderate temperatures due to its proximity to the Pacific Ocean and eastnortheast exposure. The vineyard receives warm morning sunlight with cooling fog that prevents the grapes from ripening too quickly.

Talbott Vineyards winemakers are keepers of a great history. We believe it is our responsibility to not only respect the past, but also to innovate in the present, ushering the legacy of Talbott Vineyards into the future. Our winemaker Kamee Knutson brings over 20 years of experience making Chardonnay and Pinot Noir throughout California’s Central Coast. Kamee takes a minimal approach to winemaking, letting the fruit and terroir of Sleepy Hollow Vineyard shine while using sustainable practices to give back to the land. “The grapes are the stars of the show,” she says, adding that she looks to the fruit and the site as her guide for what the wines will taste like. This respect for the land and fruit brings to life Talbott’s commitment as a Certified Sustainable California Vineyard & Winery.

Talbott Vineyards wines translate our acclaimed vineyards into every bottle we make. We farm to the vine and make wine to the barrel; these are the smallest-possible increments we can distinguish, and this is how we approach getting the very best from our vineyard into the bottle for you to enjoy.

Our Chardonnay captures the terroir of the legendary Sleepy Hollow Vineyard in the glass. Wisps of lemon zest and Tahitian vanilla conjure hints of meringue clouds dotted with lemon curd. The mouthfeel is silky with touches of salinity. With a long history of supporting the local community and implementing sustainable practices, Talbott Vineyards gained Certified California Sustainable Vineyard & Winery in 2022.

“It all began with my first taste of a great Burgundy. The experience profoundly shaped my palate, and as I grew older I knew that I wanted to create unique and exceptional Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Wines that took their inspiration from Burgundy but had their roots in California’s soils.”

A testament to its unique sense of place, our Pinot Noir shows savoury spice and luscious plum and blackberry, traced with dried meat and a touch of vanilla. Rich, bold notes of black cherry, raspberry, and clove weave into a long, sultry finish. THE LANGUAGE OF YES

A journey of discovery

PORTFOLIO OF LUXURY WINES | 91

THE LANGUAGE OF YES

‘The Language of Yes’ or La Langue d’Oc is the term that medieval folk of southern France and adjacent environs used to describe who they were by how they spoke (differentiating themselves from ‘La langue d’oil’ spoken by their northern neighbours.

‘The Language of Yes,’ a precursor of modern Provençal, is a window to a particular sensibility – the language of the love poetry of the troubadours – one that esteemed passion and romance above cerebration and most significantly, expressed a deep, almost mystical love of the land.

‘The Language of Yes’ is the language we seek to articulate in our far-flung New World outpost in the Central Coast of California, a dedication to affirmation and positivity. Great wine can only come from vignerons who love their land deeply, and whose love poetry is the vinous expression of their passion. The Language of Yes wines preserve the old ways, revealing the utmost respect for the integrity of the sites form which they derive. The raising of the wine is done with the lightest possible hand, allowing the natural exuberance of the vines, the grapes, the wine and the winemaker to joyously emerge, unmistakably pronouncing the Language of Yes.

All of the above is just fancy way of saying that The Language of Yes owes a cultural and aesthetic, even moral debt to the wines and vignerons of southern France. However, bear in mind that what we are trying to achieve here is not to blindly emulate the French, but rather, to try and find our own original style and voice, informed by the uniqueness of the vineyards, climats, and by the (mostly) sunny disposition of the Central Coast of California. The Language of Yes is certainly a journey of discovery, continuously working rather more to find, than to create complexity and soulfulness in the vines and wines.

A supremely refined Syrah that combines old world structure and complexity with new world aromatic intensity. From the vinous experiments of iconic winemaker Randall Grahm.

Grapes hail from the prestigious CSWA certified sustainable Rancho Réal vineyard in the Santa Maria Valley AVA, one of the coolest sites in California where Syrah can be successfully grown and where a long growing season allows the fruit to develop complex aromas and flavours, and specifically the characteristic pepperiness of Syrah. The wine is marked by its sharp acidity and vivid pepperiness, with strong suggestions of black olives, violets, liquorice and white flowers, softening with age. Richly reminiscent of the wines of St. Joseph in the Northern Rhône, this lively Syrah incorporates a proportion of Viognier each year which is co-fermented in stainless steel, giving a respectful nod to its French predecessor.

The Language of Yes Grenache is a lithe and delicate bottling of the varietal, thanks to the cool microclimate of the Rancho Réal vineyard, and winemaker Randall Grahm’s light touch in the cellar.

The wine is 50% whole cluster fermented and spends some time in stainless steel and older puncheons before bottling. Where possible, the grapes are dried for three days in situ in the en passerillage style to lignify the stems and allow the grapes to ‘recompose’ themselves. Randall seeks to vint a more “open-knit” wine, with lighter colour and far more elegance than is typically found in California Grenache. The wine was aged in larger vessels to minimise the amount of oxygen ingress in its élevage. Whilst not densely tannic, the Grenache is persistent on the palate, with strong notes of autumnal spices and opulent notes of strawberry, rhubarb and a hint of blood orange.

MASSICAN

Italian in heritage and exuberant in expression

PORTFOLIO OF LUXURY WINES | 99

MASSICAN

Winemaker Dan Petroski founded Massican in 2009 as Napa’s ‘only white wine winery,’ a title it retains today.

Petroski makes ‘Mediterranean’ wines, which refers to not only their style (highacid, floral, salty) but their ambition: to grace tables, not stock cellars. Dan started Massican to make “wines that you can put on the table at the peak of summer when you’re eating dinner outside with your friends and family.” He was just a few years removed from a late-career shift from media into wine, a “big swing” that landed him in the cellar of Valle dell’Acate in Sicily, then a harvest internship at DuMol, which, in turn, led to a job at Larkmead in 2006 working with then-winemaker Andy Smith to refresh the historic estate. When Smith left in 2012, Dan became Larkmead’s head winemaker, overseeing the winery’s transition into lowintervention winemaking and increasing its focus on vineyard-designate wines.

It was in his early days at Larkmead that Dan was introduced to old vines of Tocai Friulano on the estate, and with the 2009 vintage, he started Massican with an opening salvo of 400 cases, a RibollaFriulano-based-blend - not exactly standard Napa fare. Over the next several years, Dan moonlit as Massican’s auteur while taking Larkmead from strength to strength, and this ability to straddle two worldspositing Napa’s future while simultaneously caretaking its historical legacy - inspired the San Francisco Chronicle to name him “Winemaker of the Year” in 2017. In 2022, Dan left Larkmead to focus on Massican full-time.

I’m nearly fifteen years since its founding, Massican has become more than a white wine winery; it’s an entry point to conversations about sustainability, transparency, and the democratization of top California wine. But this is only possible if the wines are good…and they are. The grapes may not be obvious, but the intention is clear because Massican is rooted in the personal, an extension of its founder: Italian in heritage and exuberant in expression; casually elegant wines built for the table and, perhaps, a bowl of brined olives.

GEMINA CALIFORNIA WHITE BLEND

Gemina is the name of an ancient Roman grape planted in the region around the Massican hills of southern Italy. This grape variety originates from Greece, dating back to the first century when it was first called Aminea Gemina.

Gemina is a unique, white wine blend combining grapes originally from the south of Italy and now planted here in California. This blend balances our winery’s familial history in the south of Italy with our passion for the fresh white wines of the Mediterranean.

ANNIA NAPA VALLEY WHITE BLEND

Our flagship white wine blend is sourced from small vineyards around the Napa Valley. Annia is fresh and subtle and fulfills the promise set forth years ago to bottle memorable white wines unique among the wines of California.

The three grape varietals, Tocai Friulano, Ribolla Gialla and Chardonnay, are harvested separately and fermented independently in French Oak and stainless steel tanks until blending six weeks before bottling. The Tocai and Ribolla build the aroma and flavor profile of the wine, while the Chardonnay adds to the wine’s structure.

We are proud to source the grapes for this wine from Hyde Vineyard, one of California’s most famous and historic Chardonnay vineyards, founded by Larry Hyde in Carneros in 1979.

Tucked away in the southern part of Napa Valley, the entire estate is a gorgeous expanse of rolling hills with southeast exposure and saline morning fog. The parcel of Musque clone of Chardonnay that makes up this bottling was planted in 1992. The wine is fermented and aged in French Oak, then bottled as this single-vineyard wine.

DENNER

PORTFOLIO OF LUXURY WINES | 107

DENNER

After traveling the state for years searching for the perfect piece of dirt to grow grapes that would produce highly-acclaimed wines, Ron Denner finally found exactly what he was looking for in the far western reaches of Paso Robles in 1997.

He began planting the first few acres in 1999, which has now grown to a total of 156-acres, consisting of 20 different grape varieties and counting. We designed our estate winery to fit into the rolling hills of the surrounding vineyard — allowing us to exercise only the gentlest touch on the incoming grapes. Through our gravity flow process, we can showcase exactly what the vineyard and the vintage give us and produce wines that are both powerful and finessed.

Our 156 acres press up against the Santa Lucia Range, giving the site great diversity of elevation, aspect and soil. Previously dry farmed barley, the estate is nestled into the Templeton Gap, an East/West corridor

where the marine layer can reach the inland valleys. As a result we receive large diurnal temperature swings without high moisture pressure, giving us a near perfect growing climate.

Today, winemaker Anthony Yount has helped make Denner into one of California’s great wineries through careful vineyard management (including dry-farming and organic practices) and non-interventionist winemaking. In the cellar, Yount takes cues from the old world, working with a percentage of whole-cluster in his Rhone blends, relying on native yeasts for fermentation, and bottling his wines unfined and unfiltered.

All of this is to translate, as faithfully as possible, the terroir of a great site. Denner boasts a patchwork of calcareous clay vineyards soaring to more than 1,000 feet above sea level, producing several Rhone and Bordeaux-style red and white wines, with the estate planted to more than 20 varieties.

Ditch Digger is our acclaimed Rhone-style blend. Like all Denner wine, it is a genuine expression of the vintage and vineyards, but also of the people that work together to make this delicious and complex wine.

PASO ROBLES RED BLEND

DIRT WORSHIPPER CALIFORNIA SYRAH

Dirt Worshipper is Paso Robles Syrah in all its glory, as demosnstrated by its consistent 95+ point scores from top trade publications. Our vineyards press up against the Santa Lucia Range, giving the site great diversity of elevation, aspect and soil, and a near perfect growing climate.

Powerful aromas of violets, blueberries, sasparilla, Kalamata olive and wild mint exude from the glass. The midpalate is dripping with blackberry, hoisin, white pepper, spanish chorizo and dark chocolate notes that evolve into a rich mouthfeel and stunningly long finish.

MOTHER OF EXILES

BORDEAUX-STYLE RED BLEND

Mother of Exiles epitomises the outstanding quality of Bordeaux varietals that Paso Robles produces. Nestled into the Templeton Gap, the estate receives large diurnal temperature swings without high moisture pressure, allowing us to produce the quality fruit Denner is known for harvest after harvest.

Seductive aromas of violet, graphite, humidor, and new Italian leather explode from the Mother of Exiles. Wildly complex notes of blueberry, game, sandalwood, and dark chocolate give way to perfectly endowed tannins on the persistently hedonistic finish.
