A step-by-step guide to our waterproofs

Step one: BarricadeTM – the right starting point.

We tested every branded waterproof fabric available before we set off on a path to develop our own. Many were simply overhyped and overpriced without offering the comfort and durability we felt was essential to the Rohan promise. Now BarricadeTM fabric is the starting point for every Rohan waterproof.

With Barricade,TM the harder you work and the more you sweat, the more it breathes. And like everything we make it is durable, offering maximum performance with no fuss. It’s easy enough to make something waterproof, even a black bin bag will do that.

But BarricadeTM is fully waterproof and exceptionally breathable, and that’s the secret to comfort on the rainiest of days.

We use two construction methods for our BarricadeTM garments: our 3-layer construction bonds the BarricadeTM membrane to both the outer and the inner fabrics. This creates a durable, reliable waterproof-breathable barrier; with no movement between the layers, the long-term protection offered to the delicate membrane is maximised. Our 2-layer construction method bonds the membrane to either the outer fabric or the inner fabric – with a loose liner or outer to protect the nonbonded side of the BarricadeTM membrane. This construction method tends to produce a softer, more comfortable, highly breathable garment with a natural drape.

Most of our waterproof clothing also uses a Durable Water RepellencyTM finish. This provides that satisfying ‘beading-up’ effect. It isn’t permanent but will last around twenty washes – for most people this could be a realistic lifetime for a jacket.

The jacket is still waterproof without this coating and other similar treatments can be washed back in, if needed.

Step two: Details, details, details.

If you are an outdoor clothing company founded in North Yorkshire, you know a little about rain. And when you make a waterproof jacket, you make it tough and you make sure it really works. And the devil, as they say, is in the details.

1. Crafted hood design for maximum vision and shelter.

4. Taped seams for a permanent weatherproof seal.

The precision pattern cutting on our hoods has been developed over many years. The trick is to maximise vision by getting an optimum fit around the head. And on all of our mountain jackets and even most of our more urban and travel shells there are wired and stiffened peaks which are essential for glasses wearers.

The weak points of every jacket are the seams. Simply put, the fewer seams, the easier it is to create a lasting, watertight seal. But waterproof products are never quite that simple.

Too few seams and the fit won’t work as well when you’re active. So our highest specification winter mountain jackets will have more seams than all-rounders. Once the balance between fit and seams is right we then use a taping process for a secure fix between tape and fabric. All seams on BarricadeTM products are taped in this way.

2. Roll-away hoods.

All Rohan clothing is designed to be versatile, fitting in rather than standing out. Because of this, even our top of the range jackets will often feature roll away or detachable hoods. It just means if you are in town and the heavens aren’t opening, you can make the jacket look smarter.

3. Storm flaps to protect the zip.

The central zip is always going to be vulnerable which can lead to a damp vertical stripe on your mid-layer.

So look out for generous storm flaps or water repellent zips on all our waterproof clothing to keep you nice and dry.

5. Storage options.

Like all Rohan clothing, our waterproofs come with plenty of storage options. From generous map pockets on our outdoor waterproofs to purpose-designed internal pockets for a mobile phone or travel documents, you’ll find somewhere to store everything you need for a day on the hill – or around town.

Step three: Where will your journey take you?

What exactly will you be using the waterproof for?

An outer shell jacket is an investment. That’s why all Rohan waterproofs have excellent durability and are designed to be versatile. So even solid walking jackets like the Hilltop on page 13 are styled so that they could easily double-up as a city mac.

And jackets like the Dry Delta on page 15 are as at home on the rainy golf course as they are in a wintry city.

However, we recognise that if you’re trekking across a windswept Munro you may want a classic looking waterproof and if you’re in New York on business you might want a sharp city mac. The options are all there. Your journey is unique and your choice is individual. We believe we have the right waterproof for you. The weather will make its own mind up, but we can control its effect on you.
