Unlock the natural beauty of South Devon With most of its rugged coastline classified as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it’s sometimes hard to believe you’re not abroad when you visit South Devon, and its charming countryside.

Perfect for those craving some sand and sea air, if you’re travelling south, be sure to spend some time in Salcombe. This picturesque harbour town has everything. From pristine beaches and amazing seafood shacks to endless opportunities to get out on the clear turquoise water.

If you’re itching to wear in your new walking shoes, popular walks include Hope Cove to Salcombe, East Portlemouth to Gara Rock and the family friendly Snapes Point route – mostly flat, it’s a great option for introducing little ones to the great outdoors.

Dartmoor National Park

Just 35 minutes by car from Salcombe, on the Somerset-Devon border, lies Dartmoor National Park. Its extraordinary landscape’s unlike any other in the UK. Truly diverse, with heather clad moors, granite tors, old woodlands, bustling villages and even points of interest like Castle Drogo, Buckfast Abbey and the famous Dartmoor ponies. It’s also the only place in the world where you can spot a Bog Hoverfly – a tiny, yet brightly marked hoverfly that’s currently identified in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan.

Another unspoilt gem in South Devon is Blackdown Hills. With its lush rolling hills, steep valleys and calming streams, if you’re looking to escape to the countryside, this will definitely do the trick. Perfect for cyclists and hikers of all levels, there are forests, farmland and an amazing array of fauna and flora to be explored.

The wild waterfalls of Yorkshire If you’re after something a little bit different, consider taking a tour of Yorkshire’s many awe-inspiring waterfalls. Home to some of the country’s greatest falls, it’s a fantastic way to organise your next trip around the Yorkshire Dales.

There are endless possibilities when it comes to planning your route, but not-to-miss waterfalls include Janet’s Foss and Gordale Scar in Malham, Catrigg Force in the quaint town of Settle, the spectacular Ingleton Falls and Hull Pot, based on the western side of Pen-y-ghent, one of Yorkshire’s Three Peaks.

Of course, as you pass from one waterfall to the next, you’ll have the opportunity to explore some of Yorkshire’s wonderful towns and villages as well.

Miles upon miles of wilderness await, alongside some of the UK’s best pub lunches helping you to power on to your next location.

Kielder Forest

Discover the dark skies of Northumberland Much further up north is our final UK destination.

Near the Scottish Borders, the county of Northumberland is rich in history and holds an endless number of beautiful spaces waiting to be discovered. With locations to explore leisurely on foot or trips to test your fitness, the county of Northumberland has it all.

Just 30 miles from Hexham, a must for any visitor is a trip to Kielder Water & Forest Park.

It’s home to Europe’s largest man-made lake – at a breath-taking 250 square miles and also England’s largest working forest.

Kielder is a wonderful spot for a day trip, but if you really want to get the most out of your visit, we recommend staying for at least two to three days.

Sky Clear Lodge Park in Ravenshill Forest is a fantastic base if you want to stay in the very heart of Kielder Forest. Known for having the darkest night skies in England, Kielder is a dream come true for stargazers. A stop by Kielder Observatory is a must. Not only will you find the very best spots for admiring the night’s sky here, astronomers from their Astronomical Society will show you how to use the huge telescopes located on site and if you’re lucky, you might just see a shooting star!

During the day, Kielder is bursting with life.

A walk or a hike is the perfect way to take in the beauty of the area. The Kielder Water Birds of Prey Centre, based at Kielder Waterside is a delight for all ages. From here you can hire paddleboards and fishing boats – even try your hand at canoeing and water skiing.

Of course, there’s more to Northumberland than Kielder. An area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, your UK break wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the mysterious Holy Island, the village of Seahouses, and Alnwick and Bamburgh Castles.

It’s actually possible to walk the 3 miles between Seahouses and Bamburgh along the coast.

If you’re planning to visit historic attractions in Northumberland during the ongoing pandemic, please remember to book in advance.

About an hour’s drive from Bamburgh, you’ll reach Wallsend, and the start of Hadrian’s Wall. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hadrian’s Wall dates back to AD122. Stop off at key points along the wall and visit museums, temples and even restored Roman bath houses and forts. However, if you’re up for the challenge, it takes approximately six to seven days to hike the 73 miles of the wall. An unforgettable experience, you’ll learn about the area’s Roman heritage and witness some of England’s stunning landscapes first-hand.

From tree surgeon to gourmet mushrooms 14

One positive that has come out of the pandemic has to be our love and appreciation of nature, and how it can help lift our mood.

Someone who has always appreciated nature since childhood, and understands how it can benefit not only our mental wellbeing but our health too, is Iain Hickinbottom.

What made you decide to retrain as a tree surgeon?

I started my career doing a degree in engineering and my master’s led me to work within a laboratorybased R&D role for some years. I’d always craved working outdoors, and I started on this path when I lived in Spain and worked with a guy called Drummond who was a tree surgeon.

We became firm friends and I ended up working for him, and I thought wow, this is brilliant – what a great job being paid to climb trees is. So, with the seed planted, I came back to the UK, retrained and took the qualifications to pursue this path. After qualifying, I was lucky to pick up work through the council as my first job.

I quickly migrated to running a friend of a friend’s tree surgery business for him, which allowed me to gain more experience. Then I guess it was just a natural progression wanting to be my own boss, and I enjoy the freedom that self-employment can bring.

My business allows me a huge amount of flexibility – with the type of work I do, it’s not a typical 9 to 5, which allows me to pursue other passions.

Talking about passions, what inspired you to take up cultivating gourmet mushrooms?

I’ve always loved growing food since I’ve had a garden. Many years ago, when I was living in London, I had a juice bar in Shoreditch where we would take the food grown from The Coriander Club. I supported setting up this project in East London with the Bangladeshi community, and it gave me a chance to share the joy of gardening.

Being part of both projects rekindled my love of growing food and I guess it never left me.

Can you walk us through the process?

It’s essentially taking grafts or cuttings, from different species that you like, and placing them onto agar plates and encouraging the mycelium to colonise the agar. It takes a lot of time to get right as growing mushroom spawn takes multiple steps.

It’s labour intensive and a constant learning curve, but I love it. I’m enjoying updating my knowledge of what works and sharing the end product with friends and family.

One of the most interesting things I’ve learnt is the traditional method of growing Shitake mushrooms by impregnating logs. In Japan, they’ve been using this method for hundreds of years. You’ll need large outdoor areas to accommodate this however, as you’re reliant on seasonal triggers of humidity and temperature.

Shitake farmers trigger the fruiting cycle by shocking them. They do this by using a special stick to whack the whole of the log and place them in large cold-water baths.

What varieties do you grow?

I mainly grow Shitake and Lion’s Mane for me and my friends as they have interesting deep flavours and that fifth taste that has recently been discovered called umami. I do have the capacity to grow quite a lot, especially as I converted my shed into a grow room, so I can control temperature and humidity levels to give the mushrooms exactly what they need, when they need it.

Do gourmet mushrooms have special nutritional value?

If there was one piece of advice you could give to your younger self, what would it be?

Yes, a lot of them have medicinal and health benefits. Many are high in antioxidants and have been shown to boost the auto-immune system.

Lion’s Mane, for example, is high in protein and vitamin D.

I feel it goes hand in hand with knowing yourself, but also just listening more to yourself rather than listening to what everyone else is saying. It took me a long time to start following my instincts.

What are your plans for the future?

I’m a hobbyist at the moment, but once things start to normalise, I’d like to look at setting myself up as a commercial grower.

JOHN DYER

Painting nature and inspiring generations ‘Last Chance to Paint’ has inspired countless children and adults to become aware of the natural world’s beauty through art and music. Today we talk to John about what inspired the project and, not least, his trusty Rohan painting shirt, which accompanied him on his trip to the Amazon 20 years ago and is still in use today.

John started his career with a degree in London in 1989, studying painting, design and photography – following in the footsteps of his artist father.

He loved university life, saying with a smile: “I was kind of doing a bit of everything, broadly ignoring what I was asked to do, and broadly making the most of having three years to indulge everything I wanted to do.”

Fast-forward to 2018, and John had just finished setting up ‘Last Chance to Paint’, a non-profit organisation designed to help children engage with the environment through art and music.

The Born Free Foundation are the main working partner, who have helped John truly bring his vision to life, with support from the Eden Project (where he’s been an artist in residence for over 20 years).

John chose Rohan as his clothing partner, and when we asked him why, he revealed that Rohan supported his original Amazon expedition way back in 1989 – kitting out the entire team for the adventure. He still uses his Amazon expedition shirt to this day – it’s now his trusty painting shirt!

“I fell in love with Rohan clothes, because they’re just so super practical, comfortable and they just work.”

We were curious to learn more about how ‘Last Chance to Paint’ came into being, and John kindly shared the organisation’s origin story with us. It all started when he turned 50 in 2018, he was given a large retrospective public exhibition in Cornwall of all his work. The exhibition was a wonderful celebration of his work which spanned 30 years of his life.

“I was asked: ‘so what’s next?’”

Last Chance to Paint: Origins and ambitions “Thanks to my pool of contacts, I suddenly realised because of my age I knew a lot of really amazing people, and in my little tiny way could make things happen – and that’s how ‘Last Chance to Paint’ was essentially born.”

When asked about the ethos of the project, John continued: “Art for me has been a huge journey and learning experience. I’d start by painting something like a plant just because it looked cool – usually because it had a great colour or great shape or form. But then, you know, by the end of the day painting with the horticulturist, or the botanist or the scientists, I learnt why it’s growing and what it does. And that’s far more interesting, and the process of painting gets you to learn that.”

“Some people actually say there should be a question mark after the word ‘Chance’. I didn’t add the question mark because it will be the last chance to paint each subject unless something changes.

It might not be this year, but it will happen – maybe in the next 20 years or 50 years – unless people make a change in their own personal behaviour.”

So far, projects the team have worked on include a visit to the Yawanawá tribe deep in the Amazon rainforest and a trip to Borneo to meet the Penan tribe and the endangered orangutans. Their latest project will focus on the Maasai tribe in Africa.

While currently paused due to the pandemic, this collaboration with Born Free is something John is itching to start.

It’s trips like this that help John inspire children all over the world. He passionately believes that you don’t have to be in the Amazon rainforest to create art that connects you to the environment, or the people, plants and animals within it. As long as you take the time to learn about why you’re painting the animal, or understand more about the situation the animal is in, then your painting will take on more meaning and instantly feel more personal.

Now his trusty painting shirt, John has stuck with us and is still an advocate of the Rohan brand.

Bringing life into the classroom It’s the reason why ‘Last Chance to Paint’ has had such a positive response from classrooms all around the globe. Schoolchildren are learning about the environment, tribal culture and climate change through art under the guidance of John’s lessons.

How does it work? With help from the Born Free Foundation, John and the team record videos live from their current location. These are sent via satellite to schools, and children are then able to send questions directly to the team through the ‘Last Chance to Paint’ website. Completely free to access, children can ask the team absolutely anything – they can even ask John about his weird lunch if they’d like – and they’ll receive unedited, unscripted answers back.

As a result, change is starting to happen. Teachers and children all over the world tell him that his lessons have sparked action, be it through children planting new trees to improve the school’s carbon footprint, having meat-free meals at lunchtime or building insect houses in the school fields.

Looking towards the future The future is certainly looking bright for ‘Last Chance to Paint’. Even during the pandemic, John and the team are encouraging children to connect with their environment. Entries to the organisation’s World Gallery are still being accepted – it’s an online space designed to exhibit the work of youngsters.

Their mission seems even more important now than ever before. Asking John what’s next after his trip to Africa, he excitedly reveals that they’re turning their sights towards the Arctic, and orcas.

John’s refreshing approach to tackling serious subjects with creativity, helps people to feel inspired, rather than guilty, about their impact on the environment.
