Invisible and odourless this permethrin-based treatment impairs the ability of insects including mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, fleas, chiggers and midges to land, and so reduces bites by 97%. It’s extremely durable too – and designed to last for the lifetime of the product.
The science behind the shield:
Insect Shield® works as a ‘contact repellent’ causing a ‘hot foot’ reaction making biting bugs fly or scurry away before they bite, landings are reduced by 45%. The active ingredient is permethrin, a synthesised form of a naturally occurring repellent found in the Chrysanthemum flower, once a product is fully constructed, the full garment includes the permethrin-based Insect Shield® treatment providing full protection; but remember any unprotected areas of the body might get a little nip.
Skin and environment safe:
Harmless to humans, Insect Shield® is a completely safe and durable treatment, no volatile chemicals are released and it’s not harmful to the skins natural state. It’s also friendly to the environment as all its components are naturally biodegradable, The World Health Organisation state that Permethrin has been extensively tested and is still considered the insecticide of choice for clothing treatment. Insect Shield® binds permethrin so tightly to fabric fibres that it remains in place and does not transfer onto the skin or into the environment.

Barricade Standard in Rohan’s language means Waterproof, Windproof and Breathable.
To achieve this standard all of our waterproofs use Hydrophilic Monolithic membranes which are often known as PU (Polyurethane) membranes.
The Barricade standard covers and dictates 3 key areas:
Membrane Water Resistance or “waterproofness” is measured in mm. In the case of a 20k or 20,000mm fabric, if you put a square tube with inner dimensions of 1” x 1” over a piece of said fabric, you could fill it with water to a height of 20,000mm (65.7 feet) before water would begin to leak through. The higher the number, the more waterproof the fabric. All our Barricade garments perform to at least 20,000mm.
Membrane Breathability is normally expressed in terms of how many grams (g) of water vapour can pass through a square metre (m2) of the fabric from the inside to the outside in a 24 hour period. In the case of a 20k (20,000g) fabric, this would be 20,000 grams or 20 litres. The larger the number, the more breathable the fabric. All our Barricade garments perform to at least 20,000g.
The Garment Construction part of our Barricade standard dictates that the finished product must be fully seam sealed. This means that at any point where we stitch 2 pieces of water resistant material together we then cover that stitching with a waterproof tape to ensure that the holes created do not leak water when in use.
Only once we are satisfied that a garment will stand over 20,000mm of water trying to come in, can breathe 20,000g of water trying to get out and has been constructed to ensure that we will not compromise those levels of performance do we call it waterproof.
At that stage it has become a Barricade.
Durable Water Repellency
Durable Water Repellency (DWR) is an advanced treatment applied to the outer fabric of our waterproof and showerproof range, it works by forcing water droplets to ‘bead up’ and run off the outside of the garment, which dramatically improves the water repellency of the fabric surface.
On its own, it offers a useful level of shower resistance; used in conjunction with our Barricade Standard technology, it reduces the tendency of the face fabric to wet out and maximises breathability.
Dynamic Moisture Control
Our Dynamic Moisture Control finish is a permanent, wicking treatment that rapidly spreads moisture, such as sweat, over a wide surface area of the fabric. This ensures the garment dries faster, meaning you are comfortable - even in the hottest and most humid conditions.
The fabric picks up surplus moisture from the skin and quickly disperses it over a wide surface area. Then, because the moisture is spread over the surface area of the fabric, it will dry quicker, which means in hot conditions you will benefit from evaporative cooling.
As Dynamic Moisture Control fabrics are not absorbent. The moisture is held on the very surface of the fabric, not soaked up, deep in the structure of the material as it would with cotton, for instance.
Anti Odour
Garments treated with our Silvadur™ Anti Odour Silver technology benefit from the natural antimicrobial properties of silver. Tiny traces of silver, distributed evenly throughout the garment, inhibit the growth of bacteria reducing mould and odour. This treatment is permanent – it will never wash or wear out.
Insect Shield®
This permethrin-based treatment is invisible, odourless and impairs the ability of insects including mosquitoes, ticks, ants, flies, fleas, chiggers and midges to land, and so reduces bites. It’s extremely durable too – and is designed to last for the lifetime of the product.

Cold Protection
We use a variety of methods to help protect you from the cold. From the soft brushed backing of fleece linings, to sophisticated ‘needle out’ knitting techniques which create a grid pattern on the surface of the fabric to trap air and keep you nice and warm.
Fast Drying
All Rohan clothing is designed to be very fast drying – as much a benefit in unexpected downpours as anything else. It’s easy to wash and often needs no ironing. Almost all garments will dry overnight, meaning you can take less with you. We test every item and list its drying time.
Sun UPF 40+
No matter where you venture, summer weather can be unpredictable. It could be dreary and wet one minute, then warm and sunny the next. But with our UPF 40+ clothing – which is tested against international standards – you can be confident you’re always sun safe.
Lightweight
When you’re on the move, it’s important you can count on clothing that is lightweight, yet heavy with features. Our outdoor range is engineered to weigh less so you can move more freely than ever.
Easy care
Just throw it in the washing machine – it will dry overnight and be ready to go again the next morning with minimum ironing required. Or if you’re caught in a downpour, you won’t stay wet for long. These fabrics are tough, breathable and designed with comfort in mind. This is practicality that performs.
Secure Pockets
Pocket design at Rohan is about precision, detail and keeping your most important items safe at times when losing keys, passports and wallets is more than just an inconvenience. Pockets are secured in different ways, either with ‘touch and close’ fasteners, together with roll-over tops or zipped closures. Sometimes they are hidden and feature discreet micro zips.
