LA GOMERA LIES 30 MILES TO THE WEST OF TENERIFE. Dominated by Garajonay, a long extinct volcano, the face of the 18-mile wide isle is scarred by deep, almost impossible-to-navigate, mist-filled canyons known as Barrancos. Perhaps fittingly for such a sparsely populated place, it has long had a reputation as being the most mysterious of the Canary Islands. But perhaps the strangest aspect of the island is a language the inhabitants speak.

A language that was described by 1st century Greek traders who heard it echoing across the 10

Barrancos as, “not like a language of men, but like the birds singing”, a language almost unique on the planet, a language composed entirely of whistling – it’s called Silbo Gomero.

The origins of Silbo (the word comes from the Spanish verb silbar meaning to whistle) and those who speak it, silbadores, were for years hard to find. What is known is that it was used by shepherds to communicate to each other from one side of the Barrancos to another, at distances of up to six miles, but what is uncertain is how it arrived on

La Gomera. I am told by locals that it developed on the island itself, while scholars with the Dan Brown or Graham Hancock view of history argued (slightly incoherently) that Silbo was proof that the original inhabitants of the Canaries were refugees from the mythical continent of Atlantis.

Disappointingly for fans of long lost civilisations, the truth isn’t so fantastic: experts now agree that Silbo arrived on the island with Berber tribesmen 2,500 years ago (a form of which still exists in the mountains of Morocco). Over the past two millennia it evolved from its North African origins and adapted to Spanish when Castilian invasions brought the language to the island.

Today the Silbo language, which features four vowels and four consonants that can be whistled in rising or falling pitches to form over 4,000 words, is spoken by nearly 3,000 of La Gomera’s 18,000 inhabitants. But less than 15 years ago it was, as Silbo expert Eugenio Darias put it, “about to die, it had maybe five years left, ten at most.”

The arrival of modern telecommunications in the 1960s was what put Silbo into a steep decline. With phones commonplace there was no longer any need to whistle messages across the deep ravines, and everyday use dwindled away (a long-standing joke on the island involves two shepherds who, on first getting telephones, called each other up and whistled down the receiver). That is until the late 1990s when Darias, realising that their unique contribution to world heritage was facing extinction, instituted a programme to give every Gomeran schoolchild lessons in the language.

“We couldn’t let the language die, so we started with the children,” explains Darias. “They learn it for half an hour a week. So far there have been few really good Silbadores but students are learning to use it and understand it,” he adds.

“The kids have some difficulty at first because they think the whistling is the same as whistling the tune of a song.

But it is completely different. When you are whistling Silbo, you are whistling the words themselves. It is what we call an ‘articulated language.’ ” Manuel Carreiras, a professor at the University of La Laguna and expert in Silbo agrees that Silbo is far more complex than simple whistling. During his research, he discovered that Silbo is processed by the same part of the brain

Commands such as ‘come quick’ or ‘help’, but our study showed that Silbo could also be used to communicate concepts as intricate as Einstein’s Theory of Relativity if needed.” So, is it hard to learn? “For someone who is a non-native Spanish speaker,” Carreiras explains,

“It would be very, very difficult to become a Silbador. There can be much ambiguity in the whistles and often the context is essential to understanding.”

It looks relatively simple. You place a finger in the side of your mouth and use the other hand as a makeshift megaphone.

You then whistle, using the finger in the mouth to alter the pitch and tone. Try as I might, and with much encouragement from my tutor, I can’t get a single intelligible word out. It might be just as well, as he reckons that once you learn it, it can become addictive.

One expert believes that the ways of the Silbadores could have a benefit to the wider world. Jeff Brent who has studied the language for over 20 years explains: “It’s proven that whistles carry a lot further than normal human speech. For rescue and emergency situations the whistling language has proved indispensable to the Gomerans. A few useful, easy-toremember whistled phrases taught in classes around the world could save countless lives.”

enerally, if someone announces that they’ve just come up with a brilliant idea while walking alone and unaided across the Sahara, it would be safe enough to tell them to lie down in the shade and drink mint tea until the brilliance had worn off a bit. You certainly wouldn’t think it was a scheme worth following up. However, if the person sauntering out from the desert was French concert promoter Patrick Bauer and it was 1984, you’d do well to listen carefully.

As a personal challenge, Bauer had walked some 315 kilometres across the desert of North Africa on his own,

carrying everything he needed for the journey. He didn’t see an oasis or another person the whole way and remarkably, he had enjoyed it so much he thought he should invite other people to do it too. Thus it was that two years and a lot of planning later the inaugural Marathon des Sables attracted 186 runners; by 2009 that number had swelled to more than 1,000 men and women, with a support team of more than 400 people.

There have been horror stories along the way: in 1994 a competitor got caught in a bad sandstorm that sent him horribly off course and got him lost for

11 days. James Cracknell competed in 2010 with a broken bone in his foot – though he still came in 12th and set the record for highest placed Brit. However, incidents are rare because there are lots of marshals to mark out the course and runners’ safety is the priority. Even so, at the very least, competitors have to deal with covering the equivalent of almost six marathons in temperatures that go up to 50°C; sand that can cut their feet to ribbons if they’re not wearing gaiters; and blazing sun – while carrying a pack weighing 15 kilograms with all their food and supplies.

However, this isn’t just some jaunt for

uncan Macrae, Rohan wearer and a face you’ll recognise from current Rohan catalogues, competed in the Marathon des Sables in 2005 when he was just 21. He admits that he was woefully underprepared, but that didn’t stop him finishing 30th – a record-breaking place for a British runner at that time. He had previously run the London marathon in a very respectable two hours thirtythree minutes and in 2012 he also won the 270 kilometre Jungle Marathon in the Amazon. We asked him what he loves about running and what it was like to take on the Marathon des Sables.

Do you train alone or with other people?

It depends. I definitely prefer to train alone for ultra-marathons as I can run when I want, at my pace and for as long as I want. Running alone also helps develop mental strength, as you learn to push yourself without depending on encouragement from others. Though I also really enjoy jogging around the park with my girlfriend.

the super-fit; the Marathon des Sables has a strong ethical element. The vibe is very multicultural and multinational – the event is popular with Arab and French runners in particular – and the environment treated with reverence.

Marathon des Sables leaves nothing but footprints: camps and way stations are tidied away scrupulously, and runners are penalised if they leave so much as a blister plaster behind. The organisation also supports many of the communities that dot the race’s route with donations of books, clean-water systems, tools for farming and a foundation to help educate women and children.

For the Marathon des Sables how much did your pack weigh and what was in it?

Keeping the weight of your pack down becomes an obsession.

Even your toothbrush becomes a luxury. A pack will be filled with everything you need for six days in the desert, and enough water to get you between the water stations, which are roughly 10 kilometres apart.

There’s an essential kit list, including an anti-venom pump, medical kit and a distress flare. Then six days of food and a sleeping bag.

What did you eat during the event?

I was an ultra novice and I got the nutrition very wrong. You have to have 2,000 calories a day minimum and I tried to save weight by making a large proportion of this energy gels, powders and bars. By day three my body was craving real food. My dinner some nights consisted of crushed crisps and a Peperami.

How did you prepare for the heat?

I spent lots of time in saunas – up to 45 minutes at a time. I also did lots of Bikram yoga.

Did you sleep OK? It’s rare that I sleep well and so sleeping on the desert floor in a Berber tent with six or seven other runners while temperatures plunge certainly wasn’t the recipe for a great night’s sleep.

However, earplugs and being exhausted usually helped me drop off.

What’s the nearest you’ve come to dying while running?

I’ve been in lots of dangerous situations, such as running along the Jurassic Coast in gale force winds and swimming across the Amazon River at night after 16 hours of running, but I’m not sure I would call those near-death experiences.

Dodging traffic while running in central London and dodging snakes in the jungle – well, yes, perhaps there were a few close shaves.

Finally, what has ultra-running taught you about yourself?

Ultra-running helps you discover your real limits – and they’re definitely not when your head tells you to stop!
