Staying warm is a matter we’ve taken very seriously since Rohan started. And for over forty-five years we’ve been innovating, experimenting and refining our protective winter gear. In today’s world that means scouring international suppliers and keeping up with constant innovation. The range of insulation offered can be baffling however, not least because the quality of your jacket can be almost impossible to assess from the appearance.

At Rohan we offer four distinct types of insulation to help you make the most of the British winter and cold weather adventure.

The aim of this guide is to make things clearer and to highlight the insulation inside your new jacket rather than just show you how it’ll look.

The idea, as always, is to get the right gear to match your plans – whether you’re heading to the Lake District, far-flung mountain ranges or wintry European cities. Hydrophobic Down Fluffy, lightweight, packable down is the finest insulation when it’s dry. But its thermal performance plummets when wet, losing its power to insulate. Treating the down with a durable water repellency creates a hydrophobic finish – the improvement over untreated down is remarkable.

OctaTM Yarn Lining Offering an extremely high warmth-toweight ratio in conjunction with superb breathability, compressibility and packability, our OctaTM Yarn lining offers an advanced alternative to a standard polyester fleece.

It’s the perfect choice for walking, hillwalking and all active outdoor use.

Plant-based Sustans® insulation mimics the construction of traditional down and has the practicality of synthetic wadding, creating a ‘best-ofboth-worlds’ material.

Like regular synthetic insulation, Sustans® fibres have a superior elasticity that achieves great recovery, flexibility and warmth retention whilst also being fully machine washable and quick-drying – a benefit that can’t be achieved in most natural down due to its high moisture absorption. But, unlike wadded synthetic insulation, it mimics the look and feel of real down by manufacturing the fibres into fill-like clusters rather than sheets of wadding, creating a softer finish with a better drape.

Sustans® fibres are synthetic fibres, but instead of using traditional oil to make the polyamide, it uses plant-based oil.

This innovative insulation performs brilliantly on cold weather adventures whilst still offering great thermal efficiency in changeable, wetter conditions.

It’s robust, durable and insulates well in the wet.

Hydrophobic Down

Down without the downsides.

Men’s and Women’s Downtown Jacket Ideal for cold, changeable urban conditions. It is filled with a high-quality blend of hydrophobic 650+ down and feathers, to offer excellent warmth with a water resistant finish. As you’d expect from a down jacket, it’s extremely warm and highly compressible.

But, unlike many down jackets, it’s also very resilient. We’ve treated the down with a highly effective hydrophobic treatment which dramatically increases the filling’s resistance to moisture. It also dries faster and retains its warmth after exposure to moisture.

Octa Yarn Lining ™

The first secret of OctaTM Yarn lining can’t be seen with the human eye: it’s the sophisticated form, on a microscopic level, of the individual polyester fibres that make up the fabric.

They have a hollow core together with a total of eight ‘side fins.’

In cross section the filaments have the appearance of a star – with a hole through the middle.

This advanced, three-dimensional shape creates a huge amount of space around the filaments. This space traps a large volume of air – which in turn provides an insulating capacity that is far higher than a standard polyester fibre.

The second secret – on a slightly larger, visible scale – is the way the OctaTM Yarns are applied to create the final lining fabric. They are knitted into a very open, thermally efficient waffle or honeycomb pattern.

This construction combines with the microscopic form of the individual fibres to create a lining which is superbly breathable, incredibly light and, for its weight and packed volume, astonishingly warm.

It’s the perfect choice for high-output, active wear.

The reduced weight and bulk of OctaTM Yarn lining means it’s far more packable than traditional fleece.

It’s perfect for travel, hillwalking and any serious outdoor use.

How to choose the right insulation for you.

Rohan has a huge choice of insulated jackets this winter. In common with everything we make at Rohan, they are all protective, lightweight, packable, easycare and versatile. This means they will all handle the fiercest winter weather together with adventurous travel and still manage to look understated enough for urban use.

There are, of course, differences, and to match exactly the right jacket for your winter plans will need a little thought, but the days of down puffer jackets turning into porridge at the first sniff of rain and old-fashioned synthetic filling going clumpy and becoming surrounded by cold spots are all well in the past.

Everything you see here will work well, whatever you have planned.

However, there are some questions you may like to think about. Do you need to pack and carry your insulated jacket? If weight and pack size are critical, you’ll be drawn towards hydrophobic down and Sustans® synthetic representation of down clusters. If you want cutting-edge insulation that has an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio and hardly any bulk, it’s worth looking at OctaTM Yarn – this technology traps a maximum of warm air due to the advanced structure of the yarn and the waffle design of the fabric.

Finally Insuloft™ is a great all-rounder. Light, packable, and durable with an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio. And we’ve been using this type of synthetic wadding for nearly forty years. So it’s fair to say that even by Rohan’s stringent testing standards, it’s proven.

The RDS is an independent body that follows the chain of custody of the down from farm to product. It upholds the welfare of ducks and geese, recognising the best practices in animal health and wellbeing.

This ensures that all ducks and geese are well fed and have plenty of water, that they’re not in any pain or discomfort, that they’re healthy, that they’re free to behave normally and that they’re happy in their environment.
