At -10°C with 100mph winds, the Cairngorms in winter demand respect. You can’t stop nature and you won’t conquer it – if you’re privileged, you can connect with it. This brutal subarctic climate makes it a perfect home for reindeer.

These gentle creatures are made for this – they don’t start to feel the cold until it’s 35°C below!

When the Cairngorms weather is at its fiercest between January and April, the herd which have roamed here since 1952 range free. As reindeer herder Fiona Smith explains, “There’s plenty of lichen up there and if the snow covering is deep, as it often is, reindeer can dig up to three feet in the snow.” That’s a habit that could give anyone a red nose. Founders of the herd, Mikel Utsi and his wife Dr. Ethel Lindgren, visited the area whilst on their honeymoon and quickly identified the Cairngorms as an ideal place for reindeer:

“Looking across Rothiemurchus Forest to the Cairngorms from the railway bridge at Aviemore on a cold morning in April 1947, I was instantly reminded of reindeer pastures in Lapland… species of ground, rock and tree lichens, which are elsewhere the chief food of reindeer, were plentiful and of little use to other animals.” It may seem a fanciful idea to reintroduce reindeer, but the species is native to the UK. According to the Orkneyinga saga, red deer and reindeer were hunted together in Caithness by the Earls of Orkney about eight centuries ago.

From the Reindeer Centre in Glenmore, visitors can join tours to see the herd in their true environment.

It’s a chance to marvel at how these creatures manage to be so wild and resilient yet tame and gentle at the same time. They were domesticated long before even the horse, so it’s a temperament developed over thousands of years. Visits are normally scheduled at feeding time and it’s usual practice for the reindeer to wander over.

They spend the summer grazing on the tops and the winters in the lower corries. Fiona explains again, “As long as they are together they are generally relaxed – they don’t want to be mollycoddled or hugged. They are very social creatures but not tactile.” And it turns out that no matter how tempting it is to touch their soft looking furry antlers in summer, that’s a complete non-starter – very sensitive nerve endings cover them and it’s extremely distressing for the reindeer.

The herd is well and strong and a wonderful representation of Utsi’s original vision. It’s fair to say that alongside sea eagles and beavers, reindeer have been successfully reintroduced into the only part of Britain that could support them.

Fiona is now kept on her toes full-time, all year round, running the centre and working with the reindeer. She grew up with the herd and her earliest memories are of snow, skis and reindeer.

After travelling around the world, working in animal sanctuaries in Africa and helping to shear alpacas in New Zealand, the call of the Cairngorms brought her back.

“Up on the hill, with Tiree, my ever energetic Aussie Shepherd and the herd – that’s home for me, and I’m happiest when I’m up high bringing the reindeer in, or training new calves with a halter.

And the two most important bits of kit are good legs and binoculars. Although, of course, the weather throws all sorts at you – you just need to be prepared for it.”

A high point in terms of recognition came in 2013 at the Reindeer Herding International Conference in Northern China when Scotland was officially approved as a reindeer herding nation. What marks the event as extraordinary is the fact that the delegates from every country are actual reindeer herders rather than diplomatic representation.

Fiona explains, “The work, lifestyle and simplicity of living in the mountains is what holds me here.

We are ruled by the weather which is a very natural way of living. We follow the reindeer through the seasons, making it an extremely varied way to live.

I go ski mountaineering in the winter and hill running and hiking in the summer – the Cairngorms offers so much all year round.”

In the Arctic, temperatures that can freeze the breath inside our lungs are further chilled by winds that exceed one hundred miles per hour. And if keeping warm wasn’t going to be tough enough on the ice, reindeer constantly get drenched by the coldest water on the planet. Thousands of years of evolution have created a coat that can deal with these extremes.

A reindeer’s fur is made from hollow-core hair.

Rohan’s hollow-core fabric is Thermocore.™ And just like a reindeer’s hair, it traps in warmth and dries quickly.

Staying warm is a matter we’ve taken very seriously since Rohan started. And for almost fifty years we’ve been innovating, experimenting and refining our protective winter gear. In today’s world, that means scouring international suppliers and keeping up with constant innovation. However, the range of insulation offered can be baffling, not least because the quality of your jacket can be almost impossible to assess from its appearance.

Rohan offers four distinct types of insulation to help you make the most of the British winter and cold weather adventure. Our aim is to make things clearer and to highlight the insulation inside your new jacket rather than to just show you how it’ll look.

The idea, as always, is to get the right gear to match your plans – whether you’re heading to the Lake District, far-flung mountain ranges or wintry cities. And with over fifty stores around the country, if it’s a detailed discussion you need, a Rohan shop should hopefully be pretty close.

Rohan has a huge choice of insulated jackets this winter. In common with everything we make, they are all protective, lightweight, packable, easycare and versatile. This means they will all handle the fiercest winter weather and still manage to look understated enough for urban use.

There are, of course, differences, and to match the right jacket for your plans will need a little thought, but the days of down puffer jackets turning into porridge at the first sniff of rain, and old-fashioned synthetic filling going clumpy and becoming surrounded by cold spots, are all well in the past.

I have always loved the Lakes, and when I needed a fresh start and a place to heal and restore myself, it was a wonderful choice.

As an illustrator, my job, in theory, allows me to work from anywhere, but the beauty of the Lakes has inspired creativity for so many people that it seemed a natural choice. I moved to the Lakes after the death of my mum and a relationship breakdown. Spending time running on the fells, or swimming in the rivers, lakes and pools was my coping strategy and helped me start to clear my head and heal my heart.

I have lots of fond memories of the Lakes from my childhood. We used to travel over from Southport and stay in the honeypots of Windermere and Ambleside. Like most kids I complained bitterly about the walking back then – strange that despite the protests, those early hillwalking days planted some deep connection that has profoundly

influenced my life. A love of the Lakes that seemed to hibernate through my adolescence and then woke me up in my twenties.

My work has always been heavily influenced by the natural world, so being surrounded by all this beauty helps. I also think that being amongst nature makes me feel more creative in general. I seem to function at my best when I have been for a run on the fells or taken a cold dip in a lake – ideally both!

It seems to allow the busyness of my mind to settle and a deeper, stiller part emerges.

The Lake District is an astonishing place.

Sometimes I worry that I will take it for granted now that I live here, then I’ll suddenly stop on a run and take it all in and be amazed by how spectacular it is. And it doesn’t really matter what time of year it is, although I do find the autumn colours particularly special.

My love affair with mountains has been growing steadily since I moved to the Lakes. My first memory of bigger mountains was when I was twenty – I drove around France that summer and will never forget it. I can still clearly remember being completely amazed by the scale and grandeur of the Alps. Since that trip I’ve always been drawn to places that were dominated by natural beauty. New Zealand was, of course, a natural choice – it’s a magical place that stays with you and draws you back again and again.

Last summer I was also lucky enough to discover the delights of Aosta in Italy, which is just wonderful. Seeing Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa and the Matterhorn all within a few days is mind-blowing. It’s humbling, but sometimes it’s good to feel small in that kind of a setting.

One of my favourite spots in the Lakes is Ullswater. I have run the Ullswater way a few times over recent years – it’s a very beautiful area and makes a wonderful run or walk any time of the year.

I love to run, I’m steady, but I love it. Especially the longer distance stuff. I like to see what my mind and body are capable of. I completed the Lakeland 100 a couple of years ago – shortly after I moved here.

It’s billed as ‘the most spectacular long distance trail race in the UK’. It’s a wonderful circular route that weaves its way around the Lake District. The ascent is around 6,300 metres – almost three-quarters of the way up Everest! With nearly half of starters dropping out, getting my finisher’s medal was a pretty big deal for me. The rhythmic movement of one foot in front of another for nearly thirty-five hours as you work your way through some of the world’s most beautiful scenery is a magical thing, and the atmosphere at the event is just brilliant.

I find being out in nature, running in nature, drawing in nature, all grounding and great for my mental health.

Getting decent gear is pretty much essential living here for twelve months of the year.

Corduroy has had a rich and varied history.

Although its fustian roots are ancient, the fabric with ridges we now think of as corduroy came from Manchester in the 1770s and established itself as the go-to rugged workwear for the workers of the industrial revolution. That quickly placed it as a badge of pride for the working classes.

More recently it’s been used as a mark of the upper class – think red cord trousers with tweed.

Or as a statement of anti-cool by Jarvis Cocker when he sported a corduroy suit. It’s been claimed at different times by landed gentry, left wing activists and laid back geography teachers – cord has been used to say many different things at different times.

As Engels explains in his seminal work The Condition of the Working Class in England, “Fustian has become the proverbial costume of working men”. Although it was called fustian cloth at the time, early marketeers in search of exotic French connotations started to rename it as corde-du-roi from the French ‘cloth of the king’.

Ironically, as the fabric gained popularity all over Europe, it was simply known as Manchester cloth.

Dan Raven-Ellison The new Slow Ways network criss-crosses the UK and will be freely downloadable through Ordnance Survey.

Lockdown did nothing to dampen Dan Raven-Ellison’s urge to explore our urban world.

Together with a team of 700 geographers and help from the Ordnance Survey, 7,000 new Slow Ways have been plotted across our land.

This is the first stage of a project that might just connect us more deeply to the places we live, allowing us to make the choice to move more slowly and to travel in a meaningful way.

Many of us have been forced into tasting this different ‘way’ in lockdown and have started to discover some hidden depths.

It’s quite possible that the only real way to get to know a place is through your feet. The more we blur the scenery with speed, the less chance we have to connect or develop a sense of place.

Moving fast is switching off in a sacrifice to arrive sooner. And sooner or later we realise the price we are paying for speed, and start to look for a slower way. Surely the phrase ‘rush hour’ has become ironic – describing several hours of torture in jams that deal equally in unhappiness and delay.

A time when communal push and shove cause us all to grind to a frustrated halt.

The team are currently building a Wiki-style website that will allow each Slow Way to come alive with stories, histories and notes, and in time with community.

As Robert Macfarlane puts it in The Old Ways, ‘A walk is only a step away from a story, and every path tells.’

The next stage is testing and this is your chance to get involved.

Dan is looking for 10,000 testers to walk the Slow Ways and refine the routes. Together we can reshape the way we move around our cities. And if this all sounds far too grand and far-fetched, bear in mind that Dan is the person who conceived and drove through the idea that London should become the first National Park City.

A measure to protect its green spaces and encourage people to develop a greater sense of place.

Dan explains the idea of Slow Ways.

“Historically, footpaths were created for walking to work, visiting relatives or trading, but many routes have been forgotten. We want to reimagine them for use today. People walk for fun, of course, but we’re also interested in the idea of functional walks – walking to visit people, get to work, or go shopping often takes less time than you’d think and can offer a host of other benefits.”

The 7,000 routes stretch to reach a total of over 60,000 miles, with an average length of 7.5 miles in England and Wales, and 12 miles in Scotland.

Routes are currently being checked before 10,000 volunteers will test walk them from late summer.

Once finished, the Slow Ways network will be published online, with a searchable database freely available via Ordnance Survey. People will be able to choose segments between towns and cities or daisy-chain routes for long-distance journeys.

“Walking is important for so many reasons. There’s a climate, ecological, health and financial emergency, and walking can help reduce personal emissions, save money and bring joy. Life slowed down in lockdown, people are reconnecting with their surroundings and discovering new things about the country. I hope Slow Ways will help them to continue to do this.”

I understand how important it is to draw people’s attention to green spaces – particularly in a city, and as one of the first London National Park City rangers,

I want to help people to discover the amazing wildlife, green spaces and events across London.

I think Slow Ways is a great concept.

Now the idea is out there, it feels so obvious yet long overdue. I have loved hiking my whole life, yet I always think of it as being in specific environments: amongst hills, green fields, walking past sheep and cows. Walking in urban areas is not generally something I do for pleasure, but Slow Ways changes that, taking us on a voyage of discovery whilst getting from A to B. I think the success of

the Slow Ways project lies in its accessibility.

It’s easy to think of walking as an activity rather than a means of transport, but seeing routes that enable us to take a long walk to a friend’s house is something that can transform our view of the world.

I attended the first Slow Ways face-to-face session. The first thing that struck me was the amount of people that attended. It was so refreshing to see. This was important, not simply from the perspective of making the project work, as there was an awful lot to do, but also highlighting the demand for these routes.

I’ve always found maps fascinating and I recognise the largely untapped potential of the footpaths and green spaces around the country. I’m really grateful to have been able to contribute a few routes and be part of such an exciting “lockdown project.”

I have just graduated from the University of Warwick in Economics and Global Sustainable Development and am deeply passionate about creating a better and brighter future.

I want to help create cities and urban areas where nature and people are in harmony, by working in the fields of sustainable urban development and conservation.

The COVID-19 pandemic has really increased engagement with local green spaces as well as a much larger appreciation of the physical and mental health benefits of them.

Hopefully, this project will inspire the public to think about new ways of getting to places and help them to enjoy the UK landscape, both rural and urban. Slow Ways is a timely and important project with the capacity to change the UK’s relationship with the outdoors for the better.

As a mountain leader, climbing instructor and mountain bike instructor, I run Jabal Adventures to help people get outdoors. This project and Dan also inspired me to become a GetOutside Champion for Ordnance Survey.

One day I was sent a link to this project with a note suggesting this is ‘right up my street’. I was immediately sold by the concept and signed up. It appealed to me for a number of reasons.

It fits with my values and ideals, it’s a perfect match for my skillset as a GIS user, and what a great thing to help Dan achieve this ambitious idea. I’m so happy to be involved.

I’ve attended the main hack day in London and subsequently worked on editing some of these point-to-point routes onto actual detailed trails.

I’d like to see these routes become commonplace, like the National Cycle Network, but for walkers and runners to connect settlements and create their own adventures.

Much in the same way that the earliest inhabitants of this land must have done.

After almost forty years involved in walking, climbing, conservation and photography in the Peak District, John has developed a deep connection with the area, especially Kinder. His first year as a Peak Park Warden at 17, saw him on the mountain no less than 54 times.

My first meeting with Kinder Downfall was on a cold February day in 1965, momentous for me and the beginning of a lifetime connection with the moors of Kinder Scout.

In the space between childhood and today, I have run, walked, climbed and cycled on and around Kinder Scout thousands of times, always drawn to the wild emptiness, and the sculptured gritstone ramparts that encircle and guard the summit plateau.

To be out on a bright spring morning along the rim rocks of Crowden Brook, and to hear the returning curlew, reminds me that this isn’t just a journey on a map, but an exploration that relates to a relationship with elemental forces of nature; the wind, the snow, the rain, the shapes of land... the space. The wild out there is the wild within.

The longest walk, the shortest day.

It is 7.45am as the train slowly screeches to halt at the little station of Marsden on the YorkshireDerbyshire border. I navigate through the village on this dim winter morning to ascend to the Wessenden reservoirs that stretch south towards Edale.

Steady drizzle is turning to snow as the land rises on the mist-shrouded flanks of the first of three bleak and treacherous moors. The mysterious Black Hill lies ahead. I am on the longest (and most historic) of Pennine walks, Marsden to Edale, and it is the shortest day of the year; darkness will be upon me by 4.15pm, and I still have 20 miles to go.

From the eastern edges of the great Manchester conurbation, the far skyline is bounded by the high peaks of the Pennine Hills, a natural upland divide between the west and east of England. It was among the city streets, the factory chimneys and canal banks of Edwardian Manchester that Robert Roberts recalled his childhood in a book entitled, A Ragged Schooling. A comment from his mother as she gazed eastward to these hills beyond, reads, “Look son, the ramparts of paradise!�

My life in the outdoors began on the outskirts of Manchester in the 1950s when my dad showed me the foothills of Kinder Scout. I remember the steep grassy hillsides and towering rocks above, and always wondered what might lie beyond the view. Little did I realise that the light which glowed in my imagination then, would illuminate a vision of exploration beyond this horizon, and would develop into a lifetime of travelling and photographing some of the wildest places on earth.

In the summer months, the quiet upland moors of the Peak District are a natural gathering place for hillwalkers and outdoor enthusiasts who want to experience the solitude and challenges that wild places offer.

Endless skies and the plaintive calls of golden plover and curlew are our companions on these balmy days.

Swathes of heather and cotton-grass bedeck the moors, emerging in carpets from the once lifeless peat. But from late December into early March each year, these summer hills transform into ice-cold winter mountains with all the attributes of hardship, toil and adventure.

It is these things I seek on this most classic winter walk.

Once across the soggy and freezing moor beyond Wessenden Head, a short, sharp, well-marked track leads me to the summit of Black Hill or Soldiers’ Lump at 582m. From here it is tempting to become dispirited, for this is one of the most remote places on the entire walk. Be careful here, make a clever compass bearing just east of south and find yourself a faint track across the desolate gravels and grasses of Tooleyshaw and Westend Moss, bringing you to Crowden in Longdendale and a grand bridleway to the foot of Torside Clough (about half your distance done).

This chasm of a moorland river is also a Pennine Way section, and is well way-marked across the notorious wilderness of Bleaklow at 633m. At its broad top named locally as Wain Stones, a vista of immense size opens up across the descending moors to the Snake Pass. It is now 1pm with only three hours to reach Kinder Scout and a safe descent to Edale before darkness falls.

Through the swirls of mist and light snow, Kinder looms ahead, the final barrier.

On reaching the Snake Road I walk strongly down Lady Clough, motivated by my dislike of stumbling down the rocky paths which lie ahead if I run out of daylight, down a path on the wooded riverbank and past the redundant and spooky Snake Inn. One final stream crossing in the bottom of Fair Brook accesses the spectacular shooters’ track up Gate Side Clough and on up Kinder’s Seal Edge, now only a stone’s throw to Edale. I find the famous ‘five-minute crossing’ from Blackden Brook to Ringing Roger, switch on my head torch, tighten the walking poles and plunge down the newly restored trail via The Nab, into the back yard of the Nag’s Head, that most historic hostelry at the end of the Pennine Way. This is the journey’s end. But how strange that I feel compelled to make this walk every year since the mid 1970s when I first walked this route. It is a touchstone, a life-affirming day out every year, and a way of keeping the flame of adventure alive.

Marsden to Edale holds a warm and knowing place in the hearts of everyone who has happily endured this classic long walk on the year’s shortest day. Enjoy!

It’s also very breathable, and when you combine this with the natural airflow you get with a poncho, you have unrivalled comfort on the wettest days. The large kangaroo pocket at the front uses a top quality YKK Aquaguard™ zip, as does the chest zip that’ll give extra ventilation if you need it, and easy off and on. The hood is a proper adjustable one and snappers along the side allow you to adjust the fit easily.

Thirty years of Glastonbury, the ultimate test for a poncho.

Mud, mayhem and giant mushrooms. And of course rain.

Since my first Glastonbury in 1990, rain has fallen like liquid sunshine. Very occasionally the sun might bake the festival and we could sit out in the grass, read stories and play in Kid’s Field with our toddler children, but that was rare. By 1998 we had become hardened festival goers and were well capable of coping with the record-breaking floods and mayhem that year. Wellington boots were sucked off our feet in the deep endless oceans of mud and settees floated in the fields still occupied by blissed out hipsters. There were the smells, the flags, the crazy dancing ’til dawn, the circus fun, and of course, music from the spheres swirling in the air for four full days.

What saved me? My poncho not only saved me from mud and torrential rain despair, but worked in a way no other item of clothing could work under such duress!

It became my portable shelter, my ground mat when no dry grass remained, my private world inside which I was comfortable and invulnerable to outside weather events.

In short, it was indispensable.
