urmur the word Salzburg and what images appear?

Dazzling winters, lakes and mountains, Danube waltzes, the family von Trapp, stunning architecture and Mozart, always Mozart. In fact, this year marks 20 years since Salzburg made it onto the UNESCO World Heritage List, where members must be deemed of “outstanding value to humanity.” Taken together, it sounds overwhelming, yet somehow, Salzburg manages to keep its feet on the ground, welcoming visitors all year round.

Salzburg’s ability to keep it real is partly down to its location. People have lived in the region since at least Neolithic times, and Salzburg was once the Roman city of Juvavum, a bustling stronghold that crumbled as the Roman empire failed. By the 7 th century the place was half-wild, the ruins overgrown with briars. St Rupert chose this derelict site as his base, then set about converting the locals to Christianity and establishing salt mines in the area, before dying in around 717. Incidentally, his sister – or perhaps his niece, it’s unclear – was the first abbess of

Nonnberg Abbey, which still exists and is where the real-life Maria von Trapp is said to have served as a novice nun.

Those salt mines gave the city both its name (Salzburg is, literally, Salt Castle) and its wealth. It sits astride the river Salzach, and local families charged tolls to the salt barges plying up and down.

The moneyed citizens attracted artists and musicians looking for rich patrons and steadily the city became a hub of culture and sophistication.

No wonder Mozart found a home here.

There is a lot to see at any time of the year, but the winter is especially magical.

Take a stroll along Getreidegasse, the picturesque shopping street in the old city. There are passages and courtyards between the old houses, not far from the river. Salzburg is famous for its Christmas market, which has roots stretching back to the 15th century. It’s near the Residenz but you’ll find it by following your nose: there are around 100 stalls selling gifts, spiced cake and mulled wine.

This is a city of music. Mozart is understandably everywhere, but Salzburg is also the birthplace of the haunting Silent Night. There’s something about musicians and choirs singing in the crisp winter night that is spellbinding. However, it’s not all sugar and spice. The long winters and isolated hamlets have given rise to some dark folk traditions. The unsettling figures of Krampus and Percht are from pre-Christian times and throughout December, these two mischief makers can be seen up to their tricks on the city’s streets, in parades and images.

Of course, for many people, snow and mountains mean only one thing: skiing.

Whether it’s downhill or cross-country, this is the place for winter-sports lovers.

Cross-country might not share the glamorous reputation of downhill racers, but Austrians were practically born on skis, and the country has plenty

of good trails to suit all abilities.

Plus, skiing cross-country through the night along a torchlit trail is a rare treat. Ever tried biathlon? That’s crosscountry skiing armed with a rifle.

There are experts on hand to teach you, and targets in place for you to blast at – perfect for your inner James Bond.

There are all sorts of winter activities in the region. Zell am See, about 90 minutes south of Salzburg by train, is in the Kaprun European Sports Region, a winter-sports paradise.

It’s got something for daredevils – and scaredy cats. Take your pick of skiing, snowboarding, ice-skating, winter walking trails and even tobogganing – perfect for those who have never fully understood how skis and legs go together but still want some outdoor adventure. You’ll also find ice-skating

If that all sounds too, well, chilly, take yourself off to the hot springs. Bad Vigaun is about a half-hour drive south of Salzburg and has the most fantastic healing spa. St Barbara Therme has been around for years and used to be the kind of sternly therapeutic sort of place where ailments were bullied away rather than gently discouraged. It’s loosened up a lot now, though it still offers lots of physio treatments (good for tired skiing muscles). You can get day passes and enjoy sauna, massage, pools and beauty treatments, too.

There’s a lot to pack in with a trip to Salzburg – and isn’t it variety that makes a holiday seem longer? Start off browsing the Christmas market and the twinkling beauty of the city; head out for a few days in the mountains; then line up a massage and relaxing soak in mineral-rich waters, before heading back home – that’s a proper winter warmer.
