Giving old kit a new life
At Rohan, we believe everyone should have the opportunity to enjoy spending time outside, and the right kit to wear while they’re doing it. That’s why we set up our Gift Your Gear initiative in 2012, to enable as many people as possible to have life-changing experiences in the great outdoors.
Connecting your kit with those who need it
Access to the right kit can be a barrier to getting outside, and with your help we’re working to change that. Through our industry-leading Gift Your Gear initiative, we’ve worked with over 750 charities, community organisations and youth groups across the UK. We’ve enabled these organisations to run outdoor activities they would otherwise not be able to, given the British weather, and helped their participants to make lifelong memories.
We’re able to support so many fantastic causes because of the useable outdoor kit that you, our customers, donate during our Gift Your Gear campaigns. The waterproof that’s seen you across coastal paths could protect someone living on the streets from a downpour; the coat that’s kept you
cosy on winter dog walks could do the same for an unpaid carer as they experience their first ever camping trip. Anything that you’re able to donate, from any outdoor brand, will make a real difference to one of our beneficiaries.

We accept clean and undamaged garments such as waterproofs, warm jackets, fleeces, walking trousers, technical base layers, winter accessories like hats, scarves and gloves, and outdoor children’s wear. We also accept usable rucksacks, walking boots and wellies. Our outdoor clothing often lasts much longer than we need it to, meaning so many others could make use of the kit hiding in the back of your wardrobe. How to donate
Through our Gift Your Gear initiative, we collect donations of pre-loved, useable outdoor kit from any brand and distribute these to charities, community organisations and youth groups across the UK. When you donate your kit, you’re helping us to support our beneficiaries in having life-changing experiences in the great outdoors.

Your donation can be from any outdoor brand. Take your clean, useable outdoor kit to any of our 54 Rohan stores, from 25th April – 22nd May 2022, and while you’re there you can take advantage of 15% off any full-price Rohan purchase as a thank you for your donation.

Register your details at rohan.co.uk/giftyourgear to receive your free returns label and a 15% off discount code via email. Package your useable outdoor kit, attach the label and head to your local Post Office.
What to donate
We accept clean, useable outdoor kit that’s not in need of repair. Donations can be from any brand; kit such as waterproofs, warm jackets, fleeces,
walking trousers, technical base layers, winter accessories, rucksacks and walking boots will make a huge difference to our Gift Your Gear beneficiaries.
Excluded kit
If your outdoor kit is clean and useable, we’ll be happy to take it off your hands and pass it to one of our beneficiaries. Unfortunately, we can’t accept donations of outdoor equipment, such as that used for camping, climbing, snow sports or water sports. We’re also unable to accept underwear, sleeping bags and any kit that is unclean or in need of repair.

Healthscape CIC improving mental wellbeing through cold water immersion
Since 2012, we’ve supported over 750 fantastic charities, community organisations and youth groups through our Gift Your Gear initiative. The useable outdoor kit that you, our customers, donate means that these organisations can support their participants in having life-changing experiences in the great outdoors.
One of our newest beneficiaries, Healthscape CIC, are using the donations they’ve received through Gift Your Gear to help their members warm up after their regular dips in the sea off the Devon coast, and to make sure their on-land volunteers keep cosy as they ensure the safety of everyone in the water.
Peer support and wellbeing
At its core, Healthscape is a peer support and wellbeing group. Nathan, Hub Manager at the Teignmouth Hub, explains that Healthscape facilitates dips in the sea, along with other activities, using cold water immersion to build connections and boost member’s mental wellbeing.
What started with a Facebook post, when Healthscape founders Guy and Paul decided to put out an open invitation to join them for a dip in the sea, has become a year-round operation across 8 hubs, each of which is run by a team of dedicated volunteers. Sundays are dip days for every hub, and they all run their own weekday dips too.
Everyone is welcome, whether they want to get in the sea or not. Nathan tells me that most people prefer not to get in during their first session; there can be a lot of fear around stepping in to the cold sea. But the more sessions that members attend, the more confident they become, and it never takes long to encourage newcomers into the water.
Safety and accessibility
It’s Healthscape’s focus on accessibility and safety that set them apart from other organisations offering cold water therapy sessions. Hub Volunteers are all trained Mental Health First Aiders, and at the end of March all Hub Managers will be tube rescue trained too – they’re dedicated to being proactive when it comes to supporting the wellbeing of their members
At the Teignmouth Hub, Nathan and his team of volunteers run two dips a week, which often see over 50 people taking part in cold water immersion. On top of this, Nathan is also getting ready to help launch Healthscape’s latest venture –wild camping.
New wellbeing ventures
Having recently received a grant from Torbay Council to improve mental health and wellbeing using the outdoors, Healthscape Hub Managers are preparing to run wild camping experiences. Healthscape volunteers will be encouraged to attend first, so they can get used to the equipment and then feel comfortable supporting their members.
All the necessary gear will be provided to anyone who signs up, including donations of waterproofs from our Gift Your Gear initiative, so all the campers will be protected from the elements. We’re so excited to watch Healthscape grow, as each of their hubs continue to improve the mental wellbeing of their communities.

Supporting your journey for 50 years
The beginning, like most beginnings, was simple. It started on a kitchen table in a small cottage in Skipton, North Yorkshire. Paul and Sarah Howcroft were on a mission: to change how people thought about outdoor clothing. And just like that, Rohan was born.
While other outdoor brands were focusing on specific garments, the team took a step back and really got to grips with fabric technology. They were the first to offer soft shell. The first to create compact travel trousers. And in a first to beat all firsts, the Windlord Gwaihir Jacket was used on the first ascent of Everest without oxygen. This uncompromising pursuit of excellence snowballed. And in the following years innovation followed more innovation. From Bags with Airlight, to UV protective fabric. And insect repellent clothing, to Barricade Standard waterproofing. We were always looking for better then – and we’re still looking for better now. We’ve stayed true to our spirit. It’s the same spirit that our customers embody: single-minded. Adventureloving. And an unwillingness to settle for business as usual. So as we look to the next half a century, we do so with the same wonder, excitement and sense of challenge that Paul and Sarah felt some 50 years ago.

Plymouth Soup Run providing hot meals to people in need
We’re proud to support such a variety of meaningful causes through our Gift Your Gear initiative. The pre-loved outdoor kit that we collect and send out means that organisations such as Plymouth Soup Run can provide warm, protective clothing to the people in need who visit their nightly soup runs.
All year and in any weather
I recently spoke to Josh, a weekly volunteer, and Maddie, a Team Leader, at Plymouth Soup Run. The night before we spoke, in terrible weather, their team had taken to the streets of Plymouth to serve food to over 100 people, with 3 crates of Gift Your Gear donations at hand for anyone who needed extra layers or waterproofs to protect them from the elements.
Plymouth Soup Run provide much-needed support 365 days of the year. Every Monday night, Maddie, Josh and the rest of their team serve around 100 people across 4 stops. They use a minibus to transport their volunteers and supplies, serving hot food from two tables at the back of the bus and warm drinks, food to takeaway, and extra supplies including Gift Your Gear donations, from the front. Many visitors use rucksacks donated through our Gift Your Gear initiative to carry and store these essentials.
Providing
more than food
Donations from local businesses mean that the Soup Run are able to cook and serve a variety of hot meals to people in need. In January 2022, Plymouth Soup Run served 2,278 meals and provided 51 sleeping bags and blankets to rough sleepers. They also made 26 referrals to the Path (Plymouth Access to Housing) Rough Sleeper Team, an independent local charity who work with people living on the streets, aiming to support them into accommodation. Eight clients were treated by volunteer podiatrists from the charity Forgotten Feet, who regularly visit the Soup Run.
Street Vet are also frequent supporters of Plymouth Soup Run, heading out with them every other week to offer on-the-spot treatment, followups and vaccinations to any pets belonging to Soup Run visitors. Josh and Maddie explain that animals are a lifeline to anyone sleeping rough, so Street Vet are a hugely valuable part of the Soup Run’s service.
Non-stop support
Plymouth Soup Run has been running for 25 years, and right now their services are needed more than ever. January 2022 saw the team serve 19 more meals per night than in January 2021, and Josh and Maddie have noticed a real uplift in the number of people who visit them at each stop. Through our Gift Your Gear initiative, we will continue to support Plymouth Soup Run with donations of protective outdoor kit that can be handed out to those in need.

Feel good in the forest
At Rohan, we’ve always championed the mental and physical health benefits of spending time outside.
Through our Gift Your Gear initiative we enact our belief that everyone should have access to the great outdoors, and the kit they need to enjoy it.
Forestry England share this belief. Their social prescribing project, Feel Good in the Forest, targets marginalised communities who might otherwise miss out on the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities.
“A pleasant change of pace.”
Feel Good in the Forest is currently being piloted in Chopwell and Thames Chase Forests. Although still in the pilot phase, participant feedback so far shows how appreciated, and needed, this project is, as it’s providing exactly what visitors need.
Each walk is followed by a social get-together, usually involving tea and biscuits, to make sure everyone can benefit not only from a rejuvenating walk through the forest, but also from the joy that comes from meeting and building connections with new people.

We’re proud to support Forestry England’s Feel Good in the Forest project, because we understand how beneficial spending time in the great outdoors can be, especially when you’re wearing the right kit. That’s where our Gift Your Gear initiative comes in: we’re providing donations of useable outdoor kit so that all participants are fully kitted out each week, ready to get stuck in and enjoy their walk together.
