In the foothills of Snowdon, one of Britain’s most dramatic mountains, lies the famous Pen-y-Gwryd Hotel. Follow in the footsteps of the mountaineering greats and make it your own base camp for exploring this stunning region.

he best legends include giants.

And if legends are to be believed, then the picturesque Pen-y-Gwryd Hotel lies in the shadow of a mighty slain giant, Rhitta Gawr. His tomb is said to be located on the summit of Snowdon, a fittingly imposing resting place atop Wales’s highest and most imposing peak.

From its enviable location on the Pen-y-Pass, alongside Snowdon and the Glyder ridge, the atmospheric interior of the hotel makes a perfect backdrop for experiencing a piece of mountaineering history. The Everest team stayed here in 1953 and used the hotel as a base while preparing for their first historic ascent of the summit.

Sir Edmund Hillary, Sherpa Tenzing Norgay and their team took over the Pen-y-Gwryd and used the Snowdonian slopes as testing grounds for the oxygen units and survival equipment that would become essential in conquering Everest in May of that year. Their mountaineering achievement, a world’s first, is commemorated at the hotel with a wealth of expedition equipment and memorabilia that adorns its walls and there are also several well-worn anecdotes about the team’s stay here. One being that when news broke that the summit had been reached, landlord Chris Briggs woke up all the hotel’s guests at 1am and ordered them to raise a toast to the expedition’s success. Anyone who wasn’t at the bar holding a glass of champagne, the story goes, were asked to leave the hotel in the morning.

“If you look at the gear they used to get up Everest then, compared to the kit that goes on sale now,” says current co-owner Rupert Pullee, part of the family that have run the hotel since 1947, “it makes it even more of an incredible achievement.” There were no lightweight packs or cutting-edge fabrics.

Hillary’s team had woollen mountaineering clothing and hob-nailed boots, and carried wood-handled axes, some of which are on display in the hotel’s rooms.

“It was a very British endeavour,” he says.

“A kind of gentleman explorer mentality.”

ll manner of climbing ropes, coffee cups, camping equipment and signatures are dotted around the hotel, making it a living museum for guests and fellow adventurers.

“It’s also a fantastic location,” he says, “You literally walk out into the garden at the back and you’re on the slopes of Snowdon.

The team were affiliated with the Royal Geographical Society in London and for reasons of time and expense, Scotland was too far to go for training. North Wales was the next nearest ideal place to come to train and test the gear.

It was great that the team decided to embrace the hotel and make their mark with gestures such as signing the ceiling and leaving behind some of the kit.”

Rupert’s own enthusiasm for the mountaineering traditions associated with the hotel and the area stem from the legacy left by his grandfather, who set up

The Snowdon Club, dedicated to promoting climbing, and which the family continue to run and develop. Inspiring new visitors and continuing to support seasoned guests is crucial to this.

“We’ve been very careful to preserve the original feel of the club,” Rupert explains.

“Anyone under the age of 13 who stays with us gets a silver ice axe pin presented to them once they’ve walked up to the top of Snowdon and then back down again.

The sense of achievement of doing that for the first time can stay with them forever.”

The hotel is an ideal base for revisiting the area and trying out new itineraries, as well as heading out to seasoned routes along the Glyderau and Carneddau ranges and the Snowdon Horseshoe ridge. The diversity of terrain that can challenge all levels is also attracting a growing number of younger climbers and walkers, says Rupert, many discovering the area for the first time. They’re exploring the wider National Park, especially the new biking and hiking trails that have been created over the last few years. Families can even head underground for the day and visit the slate mines if the weather closes in, and with an increase in canoeing companies offering routes for younger adventurers, it’s easy to see how Snowdonia continues to

“We’re seeing it attracting a younger crowd all the time and the Everest expedition still remains a fascinating story.

Rupert lived for many years in Manchester but admits that the lure of mountain life won in the end. It wasn’t a difficult decision to continue running the hotel along with his brother. With ever-increasing demands on our daily life in busy cities and towns, the appeal of the outdoors is increasing, he says. “There is a physical aspect as well. If you push yourself, you get such a strong personal sense of achievement and wellbeing.”

I feel sorry for anyone who doesn’t climb.”

Doug Scott delivers these lines with a wry smile. If we were hoping for something more highfaluting about spirituality, karma and connectedness, he’s not playing ball on this rainy day in Cumbria. We’re here to talk about Community Action Nepal, the charity he set up over twenty years ago. Much like Doug today, it has a pragmatic, no frills approach to helping the mountain people of Nepal.

In 1975 Doug Scott, along with Dougal Haston became the first Britons to climb Everest. This remarkable ascent of the South West Face brought him worldwide acclaim. Amongst many notable expeditions throughout his career, Doug has climbed the highest peaks on all seven continents.

The charity raises around £250,000 each year to support, maintain and staff the projects it has started. Funding comes from many places, often from individuals that see at first hand the work of CAN when trekking in Nepal. But for anyone who loves the mountains, this is a wonderful charity to be involved with.

n 1990 whilst trekking out after climbing Latok III, one of the Nepalese porters tripped and fell into the K2 river.

A heavy pack meant that he was quickly swept under and disappeared. During the wait in Askole village for the police to arrive to file a report, Doug became aware of the startling 50% infant mortality rate.

Diarrhoea was rampant, with basic healthcare and clean water unavailable to the children of this remote Himalayan village.

He also realised that linking the nearest natural spring to the village was a relatively simple task that would save many lives, perhaps it was also a way to give some meaning to the death of the porter.

TAKE IT FROM THE TOP On returning to England, Doug raised the £10,000 necessary for the work. One year later, the village had fresh water and Community Action Nepal (CAN) was born.

Twenty-three years on, CAN runs around fifty projects in Nepal, ranging from health posts, schools and porter rescue shelters to distributing donated, clean-burn stoves to remote mountain villages. The charity works hand-in-hand with the Nepali people and government.

All projects rely on what Doug describes as the Nepalese people’s greatest assets, “their resilience and resourcefulness”. Each project requires the community itself to raise one third of the money – often by donating the labour, and all 58 local staff are Nepalese.

raving the elements to capture the Arctic’s most stunning moments has been a lifelong journey for award-winning photographer Bryan Alexander. “It was a fairly warm day really, about minus 27°C,” he says of this moment at the start of the traditional reindeer race. “It’s often minus 40°C at that time of the year. Things freeze very quickly, including camera batteries.

Years ago, I was trudging around with bags of film, now it’s bags full of batteries.”

The centuries-old tradition of racing

reindeer cements the mutual reliance between man and animals needing to survive the harsh, Arctic environment.

These beautiful, graceful beasts are part of the attraction of the continent for Bryan’s work. “The Arctic is addictive,” he explains. “I travel there regularly, and there’s a sort of bug about it. It’s probably a similar sort of thing with people who travel, photograph and experience Africa.

There’s a humbling, mesmerizing quality about these areas of the world.

The Arctic has had a slightly bad press, being portrayed by many explorers as

cold and desolate, even miserable, but that’s very far from the truth.

Piloting a reindeer sleigh is an unforgettable experience,” he enthuses.

“It’s a really lovely way of travelling.

It’s very quiet and you just have the swish of the runners on the snow. You have the time to look around, as you’re travelling far slower than say a snowmobile, so it’s a stunning way to get around.
