From a hilltop camp on Lakshmi Kutir, I gazed down across a ragged and tumultuous tent city stretching for miles in every direction – like a ten-fold 16th century Glastonbury.
Down there, up to 12 million pilgrims were awaiting the auspicious day on which hoards of Hindu souls would bathe in the holy Ganges River, to pay homage to gods and to wash their sins away. I awoke at 2am ready to join the vast throngs
of pilgrims and piety, fakirs, sadhus and holy men, and to photograph an experience that I may never forget!
For many days continuous threads of ant-like pilgrims marched incessantly towards the river. Flower covered chariots, saffron robed gurus and disciples descended on this site, believed to be where Hindu deities embattled 600 years ago. Thousands became tens of thousands as we approached the river banks.
Naga Sadhus, naked holy men covered in white ash, were first into the water where they immersed in wild and ecstatic waves of life, cheering, crying out prayers and thrashing the water. I waded in with them, camera in hand to engage in the spirit and humanity of it all.
The Maha Kumbh Mela, believed to be the largest religious gathering on earth, is held every 12 years at the confluence of the holy rivers Ganges, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati. Lasting 55 days, it is celebrated at the holy site of Sangam in Allahabad.

The descriptions we had heard of the Fairy Pools had a whiff of exaggeration about them or perhaps bewitchment. Reports of bubbling waters tumbling through carved rocks into deep, gin-clear pools surrounded by carpets of soft moss had us eager with anticipation.
Our journey to find the best wild swims in the UK had uncovered many delights: secret coves, sea-caves, lazy meanders and silky estuaries, even so it was hard to imagine the Fairy Pools would live up to the hype as we walked over the rugged valley floor of Glen Brittle as if searching for the entrance to a magical kingdom.

but geology and time have allowed this particular tributary to create something unique on its journey.
We heard the water before we saw it, finding ourselves at the edge of a narrow, deep gorge, looking down into two round pools separated by a slender rock causeway. Into the first pool a thundering waterfall was effervescing while the second pool lay glassy and tranquil. Only after we’d scrambled down, stripped off and dived in, gasping at the cold, did we find that the two pools were connected via an underwater arch.
We swam back and forth through the arch for much longer than the icy water should have allowed and then clambered out, exhilarated and more than a little bewitched. Time to get dry and warm in the fading sunlight.
One of the things experience brings, is the ability to recognise when enough is enough. The art of travelling with no more than you really need gives great freedom. Unencumbered and uncluttered, you can move fast and light.

The descent was tough last night. Legs and backs were complaining, but once we were in the valley and the stove was lit, smiles returned – a proper cup of tea never tasted better. Your order will be despatched direct from our warehouse in the UK. Most parcels will be delivered within 10 business days. We charge a flat rate of $25 for shipping. Please note orders for several items might be delivered in more than one parcel (this does not affect the shipping charge which is fixed at $25 regardless of the number of parcels). The shipping charge is non-refundable.
If you are not entirely happy with your order, simply return it to us in the condition you received it within 30 days and we’ll happily exchange or refund you in full. Please call 800 334 3750 to arrange for a free returns label to be sent to you. We aim to process your refund within 14 days from receipt into our warehouse.
