SVALBARD The nearest far-away place on the planet.

A

five hour hop via Norway, and you get the distinct feeling walking down rickety plane steps that you are stepping off the map. The most famous Svalbard fact may be that polar bears outnumber people – when it comes to strangeness however this isn’t even on the scale.

Its remoteness and at times questionable sovereignty have led to a mash of influences, from brutally taking advantage of natural resources to scientific investigation.

Almost certainly originally discovered

by Viking explorers, the southernmost tip was known as Bjørnøya (Bear Island), and until the Victorian demand for oil drove the whaling industry north, the island held little appeal.

The walruses that lay shoulder to massive shoulder were easy pickings for those who could make the journey.

Split by the Gulf Stream, Svalbard has one side that is far more Arctic than the other. The cold east side is polar bear domain and the west is where the humans have mostly made their mark.

Although with Svalbard being the only place on the planet where polar bear numbers are actually on the increase, they tend to wander. For ‘out-there’ laws, how does this one rate? It’s actually illegal to leave town in Svalbard without a gun. Our guide likes to spook us about the bears, telling us that for every polar bear we set eyes upon, no less than nine have seen us. Which does make the sceptical traveller wonder how on earth human eyes were able to count this.

The town you’re most likely to be leaving with your gun toting guide is Longyearbyen. A low rise far-northern settlement of brightly coloured wooden slatted homes. Even here, nothing is as it seems. Arrive expecting to live on pickled herring washed down with fierce home-brew and be astonished by a tiny town with dozens of restaurants offering food from all over the world and a bar that boasts one of the largest collections of fine whiskies in the world. Once you’re outside Longyearbyen or Pyramiden, the island is a true wilderness. No power, no shops, no roads, nothing. It makes for journeys that are memorable, but not easy. You travel by ship, RIB speedboat, kayak, skidoo or on foot.

Svalbard holds huge deposits of coal.

But the location constantly unbalances the balance sheet. The remarkable mining settlement of Pyramiden is now a ghostly tourist destination.

The cost of shipping back to mother Russia meant the mines have long been empty and also many everyday objects still lay untouched, giving the place an eerie feel. The relics of Scottish mining attempts can look even more remarkable as you come across lone, abandoned cabins that invite you to wonder just how hard a person’s life must be in a place that must have felt like it was constantly trying to kill you.

Even the seasons are remarkable.

Twenty four hours of daylight in summer is matched by 24 hours of darkness in winter. And because summer is so sudden, it is dramatic.

The island bursts into life – packing

birth, reproduction and death into a tiny dramatic time frame. Plants, indigenous mammals and, to be fair, even the human population all come alive in the briefest of seasons.

Its northerly remoteness not only makes it one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights, but a haven for scientific researchers. The university runs unique environmental courses; the observatory looks into the clearest skies and a huge tunnel holds a seed bank of every recorded species of plant on earth. If the worst happens to our world, it turns out we will all be relying on this strange island that so often feels like it’s on a different planet.

THE ARCTIC TERN

A JOURNEY Beyond

ummer is short in the Arctic.

And as it bursts into life it attracts visitors from many thousands of miles away.

In spring as the warm salty current of the Gulf Stream stops the waters from freezing and nurtures a mass of plankton, the grey whale travels no less than five thousand miles to reach the rich feeding grounds of Svalbard, and cranes and snow geese travel even further, from Mexico and China. All are citizens of the world and a powerful

example for seeing the planet beyond geographical boundaries.

Visiting birds to this Norwegian Arctic archipelago are a central part of the dramatic transformation from winter lockdown to frenzied spring.

They define the place, with a wild aerial dance, raucous music and frenetic character as they feed, breed and raise their young. Of the three million birds that flock to Svalbard in springtime, the most remarkable journey is undertaken by the Arctic tern. With long tail streamers and slender white body, it’s known sometimes as the ‘sea swallow’. This tiny black-capped bird that only weighs around 100 grams spends its winters in the Antarctic and makes an incredible circumpolar flight of 22,000 miles twice each year. This is the longest journey of any migrating bird. And since the Arctic tern will often live for thirty years it can clock up an amazing 1.5 million air miles – that’s

three times to the moon and back!

Despite the array of incredible terrain this little bird flies over, it finally nests on relatively open ground.

It then defends its home fiercely against predators including Arctic foxes and even polar bears. A rain shower of relentless darting red beaks can be enough to chase away even a hungry bear. This aggressive behaviour explains why you’ll see Svalbard locals crossing open ground with a broomstick jutting upwards out of their backpacks. Arctic terns attack the highest part of the intruder – even if it’s a mop head.

There’s no need to travel to Svalbard to see this incredible little creature.

Breeding terns can best be seen in Britain in such places as the Farne Islands in Northumberland or on the Northern Isles. They can also be seen on their spring passage at inland reservoirs and around the coast in autumn as they head south.

It’s that time of year again, and nothing gets you in the Christmas mood more than markets and festivals. Here we’ve chosen four of the best happening around Europe.

BRUSSELS 25 Nov – 1 Jan A lively 2km long stretch of bars, pop-up restaurants and market stalls. A good choice if you have children to entertain as there are merry-go-rounds, rides and a giant ferris wheel. And for the grown-ups there’s a toboggan run and a Thursday night disco on ice – both extreme activities after a glass or two of glühwein.

TALLINN 20 Nov – 8 Jan Expect snow around the Town Hall Square in Tallinn. Estonia’s towering Christmas tree is surrounded by little huts selling their wares – lots of handicraft stalls will help with last minute gifts and of course there’s always lots of festive food and drink. The chilly temperatures mean there are dramatic ice sculptures to see and for live entertainment there is a busy programme of performances by song and dance groups, and choirs from all over Estonia.

Durham Christmas Festival

This tiny cathedral city that oozes history and charm hosts a three day Christmas festival from 2 December.

The World Heritage Site of the cathedral and castle come to life with lots of crafts and gifts. There are events and shopping in the cathedral cloisters, the Market Hall and Millennium Place.

Highlights are carols in the cathedral on Saturday and Sunday, and falconry displays and kids’ entertainment on Palace Green between the cathedral and the castle. durhamchristmasfestival.com

Read The Living Mountain and visit the Cairngorm Plateau Windswept and exposed, The Cairngorm Plateau is the Arctic of the British Isles. December means the quietest of days and often brings the first true taste of winter. Days are short but with the right weather conditions, early morning and late evening light is exceptional. And for armchair inspiration read Nan Shepherd’s The Living Mountain, a beautifully poetic book that captures a deep sense of place. When so much mountain literature is written by men, it’s little surprise that it’s dominated by stories of bravery focused on reaching summits, nearly dying and barely making it home. This book has an altogether different energy and depth of observation about it. On the subject of summits, she writes, ‘The Plateau is the true summit of these mountains; they must be seen as a single mountain, and the individual tops… no more than eddies on the plateau surface.’

Combining this reflective book with the silence of the plateau is close to a religious experience for lovers of wild places.

Portmeirion Food & Craft Fair 2–4 DECEMBER

Made famous by the cult ’70s TV series The Prisoner, Portmeirion is also home to a charming food and craft fair every December.

With over 90 stalls this year, the emphasis is on local produce and artistry.

There are cookery and craft demonstrations, Christmassy entertainment and, of course, bracing mulled wine to help with the cold winds coming in from the coast. It’s an excellent place to find unique Christmas presents and sample some of Wales’ finest food and drink.
