WELCOME HOME
A WELCOME LETTER FROM THE SOCs
Hello Class of 2030, and on behalf of our New Student and Family Orientation team, welcome to Roger Williams University! Our team of thirty Orientation Advisors are very excited to meet you, learn about your goals and aspirations for your college journey, and help you transition into being a member of our community. Orientation is the first step in this process, where you’ll get to meet classmates and faculty, and learn about resources that will help you succeed at RWU.
We are your Student Orientation Coordinators (SOCs) for RWU’s New Student and Family Orientation program. We have been a part of the Orientation program since our freshman year and we are ecstatic to take on this role so we may expand upon the program even further. Our involvement with this program has allowed us to be challenged and grow in countless ways.
Samanta came into the RWU community as an undeclared student, but slowly began to take an interest in business, and became a Marketing major. As she took more courses, she also added Public Relations as a second major and Public Humanities & Arts as her minor. Samanta keeps herself busy outside of the classroom with her campus jobs; a SPLO front desk assistant, Health and Wellness Educator (HAWE), and Student Orientation Coordinator. She also enjoys working with other students in her roles as President of the Feminists United club and President of the Hispanic and Latin Student Association. As her senior year approaches, she is grateful for the experiences and connections she has made on campus and can’t wait to see you around this fall!
Dominic began his journey at RWU undeclared, but has since become passionate about his major in Public Relations and minors in Marketing, Graphic Design, and Corporate Communications. Outside of academics, he enjoys his work as a Student Orientation Coordinator and Lead Admission Ambassador in the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. He’s also a member of the Public Relations Student Society of America and has worked for the Event Operations team for a few years. As he begins his senior year, he’s very thankful for the opportunities he has had to become a member of the RWU community and looks forward to welcoming you this fall.
Our experiences at Roger Williams have given us opportunities that we will remember for the rest of our lives. We know just how valuable being a member of our community is, and hope you take the next step to begin a journey of your own. We cannot wait to see you at Orientation!

It’s okay to not know what you’re doing at first. Everyone starts college a little confused, and that’s completely normal. You figure things out with time, so just be patient with yourself.
I would tell new students to try their best to talk to people. Whether it be other new students or professors, everybody wants new friends and if you communicate with your professors, you will stand out and develop relationships with your professors that can help you down the road.

We are home to 7 major organizations, 80+ clubs, various events and our leadership program. If you are looking for a job on campus, we employ a large amount of students in a variety of positions!
We are the place for you to visit to learn how to be engaged in our community; from joining clubs and organizations to attending campus events. We are home to the Orientation program and can’t wait to meet you at various sessions.
We are located in the Campus Recreation Center in room 206; follow us!

CAMPUS ORGANIZATIONS
The Campus Entertainment Network is one of our programming organizations who plan some of the larger, “out of the box” events. We plan everything from arts and crafts, outdoor movies, turning the field house into a haunted house or concert venue, or even bringing a whole carnival right here to RWU! We’d love for you to bring your experiences and input to help us continue to bring fun and appealing events to our campus!
Want to make the most of your college experience and represent your class? The Inter Class Council (ICC) is the student organization who works to create class specific programming along with planning signature traditional events. Each Class has a class committee to make friends, build our class community and show your Hawks pride! We can’t wait to see what the Class of 2030 can accomplish!
Do you want to learn about different cultures? Be part of a community? The Multicultural Student Union, MSU, is a welcoming space where you can meet new people, learn about different cultures, and just be yourself in a relaxed, fun environment. Everyone’s welcomed to come through to our general meetings and see what MSU is all about!
Looking for a safe, supportive, and fun space on campus? SAGA is the LGBTQIA+ student organization dedicated to celebrating all facets of identity. Whether you are looking for meaningful conversation, allyship, advocacy opportunities, or just a place to hang out and be yourself, you are welcome here. We host social events, educational discussions, and community gatherings throughout the semester. Come join a community where every voice is heard and celebrated.
By the students, for the students. Student Senate serves as the liaison between the student body and professional staff, acting as a vital bridge between undergraduates and university administration. Student Senate advocates for student needs, listens to student perspectives, and supports campus clubs and organizations. The Intercultural Center (IC) at Roger Williams University fosters an inclusive environment that supports, respects, and celebrates the diverse identities and cultural backgrounds of the campus community.

The QTRAC is here to support you at any point in your journey as an RWU Hawk. Whether you’re looking to find friends, explore questions about identity, strengthen your advocacy skills, or simply spend time in a welcoming space, you belong here. Our space is open to all students, and we invite you to connect, learn, and find belonging with us.
The Queer and Trans Resource and Advocacy Center (QTRAC) is a space for all members of the Roger Williams University community to learn, connect, and grow, with a focus on advancing equity and belonging for LGBTQIA+ students. We foster equity-minded leadership through intersectional trainings, advocate for inclusive policies and services, and address the unique needs of Queer and Trans community members.
Here at the QTRAC:
• We directly support the Queer and Trans Specialty Housing
• We host a variety of signature events to help students connect with each other, educate the community on topics related to gender and sexuality, and celebrate the accomplishments of Queer and Trans community members
• We directly support the Sexuality and Gender Alliance (SAGA) student organization and the Feminists United student club
• We host the Kinship Collaborative, a group where students, faculty, and staff build authentic connections, engage in project-based change making, and have fun in community
• We facilitate Safe Zone Trainings for students, staff, and faculty
• We assist with the Chosen Name Policy which allows students to alter their name in most University systems even if it has not been changed legally
ATHLETICS DEPARTMENT

The Department of Athletics, Intramurals, and Recreation provides the Roger Williams University community a collaborative and competitive athletic and recreational environment.
Through a variety of athletic avenues (varsity athletics, intramurals, recreation, club sports and wellness), the department teaches lifelessons and personal growth through teamwork, perseverance and commitment, which instills a sense of pride in themselves and in the RWU experience.
If you are interested in a varsity or club sport, please reach out to the coach directly. Their name and email address can be found at https://rwuhawks.com/staff-directory. All varsity teams have tryouts at the beginning of the school year. A list of these dates and times will be posted to our website ( rwuhawks.com ) later this summer.
Here at Athletics:
• We have over 610 varsity student athletes and almost 200 club sport athletes.
• We sponsor 25 varsity sports and 7 club sports.
• The Intramural program has approximately 1200 participants each year.
• The fitness center is open 90 hours per week.
• We have open swim hours, an 18-hole disc golf course and access to kayaks and paddle boards.
In order to tryout or participate on a varsity or club team, you must be cleared by the athletic training room. This paperwork will be accessible online early summer. The coaches also can send you a link to the required forms. Please know, many of these medical forms are required by the NCAA.

RESIDENCE LIFE AND HOUSING

Here at Residence Life and Housing we want you to feel comfortable living here on campus and support you while pursuing your academic goals, and to help you get socially well-versed on a college campus. We do this by supporting you with your Resident Advisors on campus. These are student leaders who you can go to on campus to help you out with any issues you may run into while living in your residence hall. These are students who have been in your shoes before so they now a lot about living here on campus and are a great resource to learn about more opportunities there are on campus. They also set up fun events for your residence hall, like paint nights and snack bars.
Area Coordinators, are professional staff members who live within the residential communities and see the day to day operations of their assigned area. Their responsibilities include supervising Resident Assistants (RAs), serving as student conduct hearing officers, and supporting the development of residential students. Area Coordinators oversee different residence halls amongst campus, Maple & Cedar, Willow & Stonewall, North Campus Residence Hall (NCRH) & Bayside, and a Graduate Student whom oversees Almedia.
Residence Life and Housing supports you on campus as your home away from home! We provide resources to help students navigate independent living here on campus. We have on call staff to help if urgent issues arise after hours, Resident Assistants, and a robust offering of programs in the residence halls!
Roger Williams University offers a variety of residential options where students can live with peers who share their interests, identity, or academic goals. The Honors Living-Learning Community (LLC) combines residential life with themed programming and academic support, while other specialty housing options include Pet-Friendly Housing, Queer/Trans, Black/Latinx, Substance-Free, Quiet House, and Night Hawks.
First-Year Students primarily reside in Maple, Cedar, and Willow Halls. Maple Hall hosts specialty housing options including the First-Year Quiet House, Substance-Free community, Night Hawks, and Queer/Trans specialty housing. Willow Hall (6s) offers Pet-Friendly housing for students of all years, but primarily first-years. Stonewall also accommodates first-year students eligible for certain communities: the Honors LLC is located in Stonewall IV, and the Black/Latinx specialty housing is in Stonewall 1, Floor 2.

Cedar Hall
About Cedar
Students who live in Cedar Residential Community immediately become part of a community where your peers and friends are transitioning to Roger Williams University right alongside you.
Cedar houses 350 students in traditional singles, doubles, triples, and quads.
Meeting new people and making new friends in Cedar is as easy as opening your door, venturing into the hallway, and seeing who you can find.
The South Campus Lounge, located right on the second floor, is accessible for all residents in South Campus (Cedar, Maple, Stonewall, and Willow communities) to enjoy.
With two billiards tables, a foosball and air hockey table, several vending machines, seven large-screen TVs, a study room, plenty of seating areas, and a bathroom, the South Campus Lounge is the social hub of South Campus.
Cedar has a full basketball court right outside the main entrance in case you want to shoot some hoops.

The Cedar Residential Community staff is comprised of the Cedar Area Coordinator, a Graduate Community Assistant, one Head Resident Assistant (HRA), and 9 Resident Assistants (RA). The Cedar Area Coordinator oversees the day-to-day operation of the community, including supervision of the residential staff. There is 1 RA per wing
Maple Hall
About Maple
Situated near the center of campus, Maple is the ideal location for those who want a short walk to Lower Commons for a latenight study break or prefer a quick commute to the classroom.
Maple units are structured as small clusters of 17 rooms centered on a lounge with several couches, tables, chairs, and a flat-screen TV.
Every room in the community is furnished with a bed, bureau, desk, chair, and closet or wardrobe suitable for the number of people in the room. Each room comes equipped with cable and data hook-up and the whole building is wireless-ready. Each restroom is designated as a single-use restroom, which means you can close the door and lock it behind you It’s kind of like being in the comfort of your own home.
There are two laundry rooms, located in the basement of the 4/5 tower and the basement of the 9/10/11 tower. There are also vending machines located in the 4/5 and 9/10/11 towers
Maple has 13 units, each housing around 26 residents in a mix of eight singles and nine doubles. Rooms are grouped into four sections around a central common room. Two additional singles are located on the same level as the lounge.
Home to the NightHawks, and Queer and Trans Living Community.
Staff Information
The Maple Residential Community staff is comprised of the Maple Area Coordinator, a Graduate Community Assistant, one Head Resident Assistant (HRA), and 12 Resident Assistants (RA). The Maple Area Coordinator oversees the day-to-day operation of the community, including supervision of the residential staff. There is one RA per unit and they live in the first room to either the right or left as you enter the unit.
Willow Hall
About Willow
Willow has over seven townhouses and unit-style residence halls, which gives residents a wide variety of housing options and the opportunity to meet plenty of new people.
Willow features a sprawling grass courtyard and a stream in the middle, perfect for sitting outside, playing frisbee, reading by the water, or taking a nap on a blanket. Lawn games are available to borrow, please contact the Willow Area Coordinator for information. Each room comes with standard furniture (bed, desk, chair, closet/wardrobe, bureau, cable/data hookup) and the entire community is both air-conditioned and completely wireless.
Willow also has its very own recreational room in Willow 44
complete with its own mini fitness center. Students can utilize cardio machines and a limited weight stack. Students who are looking to utilize the mini fitness center can access via this form. The Willow Area Coordinator office is located on the 2nd floor of Willow 44
The laundry facilities are located on the second floor of Willow 44, Additionally, you will find couches, chairs, tables, a large-screen TV, vending machines, a fooseball table.
Home to the Quiet House, Substance Free, and Pet Friendly Living Communities.
Traditional style buildings consist of individual units with three floors each. Each floor contains a private bathroom with a sink and shower and four resident rooms. Outside the bathroom on each floor are two sinks and a mirror allowing residents plenty of space for getting ready. Each first floor includes a small common area for the residents
Townhouse buildings 1,3, and 6 have three individual units with two floors each. Each floor has two resident rooms and one bathroom on each floor. Townhouse 7 has four individual units and a back deck overlooking the bay.
Staff Information
The Willow Residential Community staff is comprised of the Willow Area Coordinator, a Graduate Community Assistant, one Head Resident Assistant (HRA), and 14 Resident Assistants (RA). The Willow Area Coordinator oversees the day-to-day operation of the community, including supervision of the residential staff. There is one RA per unit in the traditional-style halls and either one or two RAs in each of the Townhouses (Units 1, 3, 6 & 7).
Stonewall Terrace
About Stonewall
Four, three-story buildings comprise our newest South Campus residential community.
Stonewall houses approximately 450 residents in a suite style arrangement. There are four suites on each floor with each suite containing a common lounge with a common bathroom. Each floor also has its own lounge area with two private study areas, common couches, tables, chairs, a large-screen TV, and small kitchen area. Common rooms are the perfect place to meet people.
Each room is carpeted and the whole building is fully airconditioned.
A laundry room is located on the first floor in each of the four buildings.
Stonewall is the location of the Honors Student LivingLearning Community.
Stonewall is the location of the Black/Latinx Living Community
Staff Information
The Stonewall Residential Community staff is comprised of the Stonewall Area Coordinator, a Graduate Community Assistant, one Head Resident Assistant (HRA), and 11 Resident Assistants (RAs). The Stonewall Area Coordinator oversees the day-to-day operation of the complex, including supervision of the residential staff. There is one RA per floor (or per 4 suites) in each of the four buildings.

The Department of Public Safety is staffed twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Some of our services include building checks, campus security patrols, traffic and parking enforcement, emergency medical technician (EMT) services, campus safety escorts, shuttle transports to and from scheduled locations (including off campus properties) and investigation of a wide variety of incidents.

Emergency Communications
RWU has taken a number of steps to ensure that its ability to respond to an emergency situation – whether natural or manmade – is as advanced as possible.
RAVE Guardian Safety App
The Department of Public Safety encourages all students to download the free Rave Guardian App to their smart phones. Rave Guardian is a campus safety app available at the University that turns your smart phone into a personal safety device. Allows users to check in with family, friends, Public Safety or others you trust to help you stay safe. You can use the app to set a safety timer, create and message your guardians or initiate emergency help requests at the push of a button. And Rave Guardian can be used to send an anonymous tip to Public Safety if you see something on campus that looks out of place or dangerous.
RWU Alert
RWU utilizes a service called RWU Alert which serves as the University’s primary communications tool for alerting campus community members to urgent situations. When activated, the system sends phone, e-mail and text messages nearly instantaneously so that students, faculty and staff members won’t be in the dark when it comes to incidents that could affect their safety. Students are automatically registered when they enroll at RWU; the only action required on their part is to keep their contact information up to date through the University’s student services web portal. Emergency Siren Warning System
Even with today’s technology, sometimes the most effective means of notifying an entire campus community simultaneously is through a much more traditional method. In early 2009, RWU completed installation of an emergency siren warning system that can broadcast an alarm tone and voice instructions to all parts of campus when activated in the event of a potentially life- threatening emergency. While the system will be activated rarely –for such situations as a sudden, dangerous lightning storm, a chemical spill or a hostile intruder – the siren will serve as a critical tool in alerting the community to an emergency situation.
COMMUTER LIFE

Commuter Life serves students who live locally with family and not on campus. We hope to create engagement opportunities with and among commuter students and other students by sharing resources, hosting events, providing peer support and more. Commuter Life also works to plan event and opportunities to create commuter connections throughout the year.
The Commuter Assistants are returning commuter students who provide support, advice and mentorship to first year students. The Commuter Assistant staff will look forward to sharing their experience as commuters and get to the new students; all first year commuter students will receive information on who their Commuter Assistant is at the beginning of the year.
Commuter Lockers are available for commuter students to store items in between classes or for the day. Lockers are located in front of the RWU Bookstore near the Commuter Lounge and the North Campus Residence Hall. Lockers are available for each academic year on a first come first serve basis for free.

RWU's Commuter Lounge is located in The Commons Building, is located in the central of campus providing commuters a comfortable space to meet students, study, or relax between classes.
Meal Plans
The Commuter Meal Plan offers the best value for commuting students. You will receive 20 meals swipes that can be eaten at any meal period, as well as 300 Hawk Dollars. The cost is $576 per semester.

RIPTA
All freshman students are eligible for the RWU RIPTA plan, which includes a number of free rides per semester during their first year at RWU. The RIPTA bus stop is located about 10-feet from campus grounds, and can take you to virtually any corner of Rhode Island, including both Newport & Providence. The RWU bus stop is designated as “Mount Hope Bridge” stop on the Rt. 60 Schedule at http://www.ripta.com/60.

Not having a car is no longer an issue! Whether you need a car for a few hours to run errands or the whole day, you can use Zipcars. With a Zipcar, everything is included with the low hourly rate. Zipcar’s cutting-edge technology allows you to reserve a car online, or on your mobile device, 24/7. You only have to be 18 years old to join. Resources and Departments
Professional advisors in the Advising & Peer Mentorship Office take a comprehensive and holistic approach to academic advising and support.
Advisors work closely with students and faculty to prepare academic plans and to assist students in identifying resources that will promote their success.
First-year advisors are also assigned to support new students in the development of their academic plan, providing guidance on choosing the right major with an emphasis on undecided students and students who are questioning their major, understanding the general education curriculum, and navigating their academic experience during their first year. Staff also assist students with navigating academic policies and procedures and provide referrals to other campus resources.
The Peer Mentor Program support to help them meet their academic and personal goals; including taking first year students on tours of campus prior to the first day of classes. Peer Mentors work to assist students in transitioning successfully to RWU, make referrals to campus resources, and provide consultation on study strategies, time management, and other academic tips. Peer Mentors host various workshops to support topics for first year students including time management, how to study effectively, and midterm prep.

The Tutoring Center includes: The Math Center, The Writing Center, The Science Center, and The Foreign Language Tutoring Center. All of the centers provide free peer and faculty tutoring.
Students can walk in and see a peer tutor, but we recommend you make an appointment at our reception desk if you would like to see a faculty tutor.

The International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) office serves as the primary administrative, advising, and advocacy resource for international students, faculty, and researchers at universities. We handle visa/immigration documents, F-1/I-20, work authorization (OPT/CPT), and cultural programming to support international members.
The Office of International Student & Scholar Services is home to Roger Williams University's international community, which represents over 35 countries. We work in concert with student services, student life, and academic departments across campus to ensure the success of international undergraduate, graduate, law, and continuing studies students as well as visiting scholars. HEALTH SERVICES

At Health Services, we provide students with a wide range of clinical services including treatment of acute injury or illness, wellness promotion/disease prevention education, preventive screenings, and laboratory services.
The clinic is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. To schedule an appointment call Health Services at 401-254-3156 or use online self-scheduling available on the Student Health Portal.
For medical care after hours, weekends, and holidays, there are walk-in clinics and hospitals available in the local area. You will need a copy of your medical insurance card.
Students are expected to use the Student Health Portal to complete required health forms, to use secure messaging to communicate with health care providers, and to access online self-scheduling.
Health Services does not provide sick notes for class absences. It is the student’s responsibility to email their professor as soon as possible to inform them. The decision to excuse a class absence is up to each professor.
For emergency medical care on campus, students should call Public Safety at 401-254-3333. For emergency medical care off campus, students should call 911.
Health Insurance
Roger Williams University requires all full-time undergraduate to have comprehensive health insurance. Students may be covered by a private health insurance plan or may choose to use the University-sponsored student health insurance plan.
COUNSELING CENTER

Individual and group counseling is free and confidential for full-time RWU undergraduate students. Counseling provides support for a wide variety of concerns and strives to promote resiliency. Our treatment team holds a strong commitment to providing effective support to students with diverse backgrounds and identities.
Who are we? The counseling team consists of psychologists, a social worker, a part-time consulting psychiatrist, doctoral psychology interns, and a secretary.
What does confidential mean? The staff cannot share information about a student’s participation in counseling at the Center—regardless whether or not they have attended sessions—without the student’s written permission. Students can schedule their appointments by calling the Center at (401) 254-3124 or by visiting our secretary in room 211 on the Second floor of the Center for Student Development building. Therapy is offered in person and also via telehealth for students located in RI at the time of the session.
A consulting psychiatrist is available on a very limited basis. Students who are receiving medication management prior to their arrival at RWU are encouraged to keep that treatment relationship since transfer of care cannot be guaranteed.

The Bursar’s Office is the place to go for financial issues pertaining to your student account; we are here to assist you with questions about tuition charges, payment arrangement and payment plans. Students are encouraged to visit the Bursars’ Office for clarification for our procedures and policy.

• We oversee the RWU Student Account Center (SAC) our electronic billing website. SAC is the one-stop, real-time website for your billing needs.
• The site gives access to billing statements, up to the minute account activity, and payment options including monthly payment plans.
• RWU does not mail paper statements, instead we offer these statements electronically
• The student is given initial access to the SAC. Students are able to grant access to family members and other authorized users.

Apply Early and Often
Many scholarship opportunities go unclaimed each year simply because the award didn’t receive the perfect applicant. Don’t let free money go un-awarded!
Pay Attention to Deadlines and Details
Deadlines are important and are used to help narrow the pool of scholarship contenders. Make sure you abide by all posted deadlines so you don’t miss out!
Make sure if your application requires a letter of recommendation or an essay that you be sure to include this. You don’t want your application rejected simply because it’s missing required information.
Don’t sign up for every scholarship search service –you’ll just overwhelm yourself.
Focus on 1 or 2 search engines and narrow your choices from there. The more specific the scholarship criteria, the better chance you have of being selected as a winner!
Outside scholarships aren’t just for incoming freshman!
Many students are under the impression that outside scholarship opportunities are limited to new incoming students; however, many organizations and agencies offer awards to upperclassmen as well. Don’t stop looking and applying just because you’re a sophomore, junior or senior!
How to KEEP your scholarship
Look Local First
Make sure you check out all local opportunities around you. Businesses and agencies will often favor local students when selecting scholarship recipients since this helps them give back to the community.
Some scholarships may be renewable. However, renewable awards might have ongoing requirements, including:
Submit a renewal application. Scholarships may require a new application each academic year.
Grade point average. You may need to maintain a minimum GPA to remain eligible.
Satisfactory Academic Progress. You may be required to fulfill academic requirements, such as completing a certain number of credits or courses within a set amount of time.
Designated field of study. Will you lose the award if you change majors?
Full-time enrollment status. Scholarships frequently require you to be a full-time student.

Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 to the Higher Education Act of 1965 ensures that, “No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.”
The Title IX Office demonstrates its dedication towards fulfilling this campuswide commitment through violence prevention programs like Green Dot, ongoing education courses on the Vector Solutions platform, and other awareness raising efforts. In collaboration with many University partners, the mission of Title IX is realized within our culture of respect and various support services.
RWU’s Title IX Sex Discrimination Sexual Harassment Policy and Procedures is a document describing expectations, procedures, and rights as it relates to the University Title IX process.
RWU’s Pregnancy and Related Conditions Policy describes the University’s procedures for ensuring the protection and equal treatment of pregnant individuals, persons with pregnancy related conditions, and new parents. The contents of both policies were created in compliance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
