Making Waves: Young Draftees Help Jupiter Earn First Championship

Jupiter Hammerheads history was made in 2023. After competing in the Florida State League (FSL) since 1998, the Marlins Single-A affiliate finally found themselves hoisting the trophy at the end of the season.

Jupiter was a model of consistency throughout the long Minor League season. First year manager Nelson Prada led the team to a 35-31 record in both the first and second halves of the season, culminating in the best overall record in the FSL East Division and a second-half division title.

After a long 132-game regular season, the Hammerheads hosted a familiar opponent in the semifinals. For the first time in the playoffs, Jupiter faced their Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium co-tenants, the Palm Beach Cardinals. The opening game in the best-of-three series was a pitcher’s duel that catcher Jan Mercado ended with a walk-off single in the 10th inning. Game two also needed extra innings, but Jupiter emerged victorious 7-6 to punch their ticket to the Championship Series for the first time since 2012.

Waiting for the Hammerheads in the Championship Series was the 79-50 Clearwater Threshers, the Single-A affiliates of the Philadelphia Phillies. The first contest was a high-scoring 8-7 game in favor of Jupiter and highlighted by a Carlos Santiago grand slam.

22
HAMMERHEADS 2024

The series shifted to the Gulf Coast, and so did the momentum. After scoring eight runs in the game prior, the Hammerheads struggled to score in game two of the series. The 3-1 loss set up a winner take all game three. The final contest of the 2023 season continued to bring the drama. Jupiter played small ball and found multiple ways to score, including a sacrifice fly, a walk, a fielder’s choice, and a throwing error on back-toback steals. With only three hits in the game, Jupiter was still able to score seven runs and win 7-4 to clinch the 2023 title.

The Hammerheads were fueled by their pitching last season. The pitching staff finished the season atop of the FSL leaderboard with the lowest ERA (4.12) and allowed the fewest total runs (606), as well as the second-best WHIP (1.38).

At the end of August, the already strong pitching staff was infused with some new, young talent as 2023 Marlins draftees Noble Meyer and Thomas White joined the team for the final push. The two high schoolers both made immediate impacts in the starting rotation. Meyer, the 10th overall pick in 2023 and the Marlins No. 1 overall prospect, allowed just three earned runs across 12.2 combined innings in the regular season and playoffs. White, the No. 2 overall prospect, tallied 10 strikeouts in three total starts for the Hammerheads. Beyond Meyer and White, 10th rounder Xavier Meachem and 15th round selection Nigel Belgrave both made major contributions during the championship run.

Other draftees like OF Kemp Alderman (second round, 47th ), INF Brock Vradenburg (third round), OF Jake DeLeo (sixth round), OF Mark Coley (17 th round), and INF Johnny Olmstead (19th round) all played a role for the Hammerheads.

All of these new faces filled roles left by other cornerstones of the 2023 team as players continued to move up in the Marlins organization. Not to mention, the many players that donned a Hammerheads jersey from April through September. Each player that made a stop in Jupiter during the 2023 campaign all played a part of the history making season.

HAMMERHEADS COACHING2024

Manager Nelson Prada

Manager Nelson Prada returns to the Jupiter Hammerheads after leading the club to it's first FSL Championship in 2023. Prada joined the Marlins organization in 2021 as the hitting coach for the DSL Marlins before being promoted to manager last season.

He’s no stranger to the FSL, previously serving as manager for the Clearwater Threshers in 2014. Beyond affiliated baseball, Prada also managed the Spanish national team in the 2021 European Championship. Spain went undefeated in their group and eventually earned third place in the international tournament. Prada also had a role with the national team during the 2022 World Baseball qualifiers that took place in Regensburg, Germany.

Pitching Coach Glenn Dishman

Glenn Dishman will once again serve as the Pitching Coach for the Hammerheads. This will be his third season within the Marlins organization. Dishman played professionally for 11-seasons after being signed by the San Diego Padres in 1993 from Texas Christian University (TCU). Dishman appeared in 33 total games for the Padres, Philadelphia Phillies, and Detroit Tigers after making his debut with San Deigo in 1995.

Hitting Coach Ty Hawkins

Returning to the Hammerheads for his fourth season is Hitting Coach, Ty Hawkins. Before joining Jupiter in 2021, the Old Dominion alum spent over two decades coaching within the New York Yankees organization. Hawkins also coached collegiately with Vanderbilt University and the University of Illinois before joining affiliated baseball.

Defensive Coach Gianni Bloom

New to the Hammerheads and the Marlins system is Gianni Bloom. THe former University of California Santa Barbara catcher worked as the Director of Player Development for the university's baseball program following his 2022 senior season.

Athletic Trainer Tyler Lough

Also new to Jupiter this year is Tyler Lough, who will be the Hammerheads' Athletic Trainer for the 2024 season. The Kansas State alum comes to the Marlins after working for the Boston Red Sox the last two seasons, for both their Dominican League and Rookie League teams.

Strength & Conditioning Jeremiah Cothiere

Returning for his second season is Strength and Conditioning coach, Jeremiah Cothiere. No stranger to the Jupiter area, Cothiere grew up in Boynton Beach and is a former player for the Palm Beach Atlantic University baseball team.

Walker and Winn: From Palm Beach to St. Louis

The newest dynamic duo in St. Louis might be an odd sight at first glance. The 6-foot-6, 235 pound Jordan Walker and the 5-foot-11, 180 pound Masyn Winn might not physically see eye-to-eye, but they’re certainly on the same page. The tandem’s tight-knit relationship continues to grow stronger as the 21-year-olds are poised to play major roles for the Cardinals in 2024.

Both made their Major League debuts last season, with Walker making the Opening Day roster following an exciting Spring Training in Jupiter and Winn getting the call in August. The stretch of baseball before Winn arrived in St. Louis has been the longest the tandem’s been separated since joining the Cardinals organization.

The duo instantly clicked on and off the field following the 2020 draft. The Cardinals selected Walker and Winn, both straight out of high school, with their first two picks. After navigating the pandemic, both found themselves settled into the 2021 Opening Day lineup with the Palm Beach Cardinals. Sharing the left side of the infield, it truly felt like they were glued at the hip.

28 CARDINALS 2024

For Walker, his strength and power were on display immediately. The then 18-year-old sent the first professional pitch he ever saw over the left field wall at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium for a monster solo homer against the Daytona Tortugas. Just 27 games into his Palm Beach stint, the Georgia native was already moving up within the Cardinals organization. As a Beach Bird, Walker slashed an eye-popping .374/.475/.687 with six home runs and 21 RBIs.

For Winn, fans in Palm Beach County were instantly amazed at his arm strength and defensive abilities. Once thought to be a two-way player, the middle infielder showcases his arm strength on every single throw across the diamond, including the record breaking 100.4 MPH throw in the 2022 Futures Game. The Texas native played 61 games for Palm Beach before reuniting with Walker in High-A affiliate Peoria Chiefs.

As they moved up through the ranks, each level presented new challenges and more jaw-dropping moments from the pair. With shared stops at High-A Peoria, Double-A Springfield, Triple-A Memphis, and eventually Busch Stadium, their relationship never wavered. Whether it was sharing apartments, advice, or laughs they continued to lean on each other.

Now, as the 2024 season comes closer every day, their story comes full circle. After showing both offensive and defensive flashes late last season, both Winn and Walker are expecting to be key contributors to a revamped Cardinals team for the upcoming campaign. Of course, their newest chapter begins where it once started, on the backfields here at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium.

Before joining the Cardinals organization, Kendall spent 16 seasons throughout the Baltimore Orioles Organization, making it as high as the Manager of the Triple-A Norfolk Tides.

Kendall will look to continue his success with Palm Beach, having led the Beach Birds to back-to-back playoff appearances.

Hitting Coach Willi Martin

This will be Willi Martin’s second season as the Hitting Coach of the Palm Beach Cardinals. Martin worked closely with the United Shore Professional Baseball League in multiple roles before entering the Cardinals organization. The Liberty University alum worked the same position with the Peoria Chiefs, High-A Cardinals affiliate, before joining the Palm Beach staff.

The former Major Leaguer spent six seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals before also joining the New York Mets, Arizona Diamondbacks, Boston Red Sox, and Atlanta Braves. Athletic Trainor Jeff Case

Jeff Case is returning as the team’s Athletic Trainor. The graduate of Missouri State University has been a part of the Cardinals organization since 2020.

Strength and Conditioning Coach

Harben Filho Branco
