Message from the Head It is my great pleasure to welcome you and your daughter to the Roedean community. Choosing a school is one of the most important decisions a family makes, and we are delighted that you have chosen Roedean for the next stage of your daughter’s educational journey. At Roedean, we place girls first. Rooted in our founding vision of intellectual, physical, and moral education, we are committed to empowering every girl to flourish academically, personally, and socially within a supportive and ambitious environment. Through our academic ambition, personal development, our global sisterhood, and our unique location, we provide an education that develops confident and compassionate young women, ready to make their mark on the world. Whether in the classroom, through the Arts and sport, in leadership opportunities, community engagement, or within our extensive co-curricular programme, every girl is encouraged to discover her passions, develop resilience, and embrace challenge with confidence.

Central to a Roedean education is the strength of our community. Every student is seen, known, and heard, and supported by dedicated staff who understand the importance of nurturing both achievement and wellbeing. Our culture of sisterhood encourages girls to celebrate one another’s successes, develop meaningful friendships, and grow into thoughtful, courageous individuals with a strong sense of purpose and belonging. I hope you find this handbook both informative and reassuring as you prepare for the exciting months ahead. Please contact us if you have any questions or require further guidance. We very much look forward to welcoming your daughter, and your whole family, into the Roedean community, and to supporting her as she begins this exciting new chapter.

Mrs Niamh Green Head

History and Ethos Founded in 1885 by sisters Penelope, Dorothy, and Millicent Lawrence, Roedean School was originally known as Wimbledon House and based in Kemp Town, Brighton, with ten students. The founders aimed to provide ‘a thorough physical, intellectual and moral’ education with ‘as much liberty as is consistent with safety’. The founding Lawrence sisters believed that girls deserved an education which was at least as good as boys received, and articulated this through a vision that remains remarkably relevant today: to encourage healthy and active living to provide a strong academic foundation to develop an appreciation of sport, culture, and the arts to build independence of thought and character to develop skills and confidence for university and careers to develop a strong sense of personal and moral values This founding ethos continues to shape Roedean today.

We are committed to providing an ambitious and future focused education that empowers every girl to thrive academically, personally, and socially within a caring and aspirational community. At Roedean, girls are encouraged to think boldly, develop confidence and resilience, and embrace the opportunities available to them both inside and beyond the classroom. Through exceptional teaching, extensive co-curricular opportunities, leadership and service, and the strength of our close knit community, we seek to nurture young women who are intellectually curious, compassionate, globally minded, and equipped with the skills and character to flourish in an everchanging world. Alongside academic achievement, we place equal importance on wellbeing, belonging, and the development of meaningful relationships. We hope every girl leaves Roedean with lifelong friendships, a strong sense of self, and the confidence to make a positive difference in the world around her.

5

Our Aims We aim to inspire and challenge every Roedeanian to develop her strengths and passions, seek the highest academic and personal standards for herself, and build strong foundations for her future. We also seek to enable every Roedeanian to develop lifelong friendships, a strong sense of belonging, and pride in herself and her school. Along your daughter’s Roedean journey, she will be encouraged to grow and flourish at her own pace within a community that nurtures ambition, curiosity, compassion, resilience, confidence, and independence.

Communication Lines of Communication

Parent Portal

Roedean has a well-structured support system consisting of Tutors, Heads of Year, Housemistress/Housemaster (HM), Heads of Department, Assistant Heads, and Deputy Heads. Each student is part of a tutor group, with the Tutor overseeing all aspects of the student’s life at Roedean, including Academic, Co-Curricular, and Pastoral matters.

The Parent Portal can be accessed by clicking on the link below:

Our primary aim is to provide individual attention to each student. We encourage you to contact your daughter’s Tutor about any queries you may have, as well as your child’s HM, in the case of boarding-related issues. The Tutor or HM will then decide the best way to address the issue by collaborating with other relevant staff members, departments, or students as needed. Please copy your daughter’s Tutor and HM (if a boarder) into all communications with staff.

School Communication General school communications will be sent via the School Office in the form of emails. For trips or off-site events, you will receive an email from our platform called EVOLVE, asking for your permission for your daughter to attend. Urgent communication, such as bus re-routing, breakdowns, or late returns from trips, might also be shared via text messages.

Parent Portal Link Login details will be shared at the beginning of the academic year by email from the School Office. The Parent Portal is used to access school reports and information about your daughter’s schooling, such as timetables, attendance, and relevant policies. You can also read bulletins, the Head’s Review, and communication from the Head on the portal. Please note that the Parent Portal holds data securely, and only authorised persons have access to it. If your daughter is an overseas student and you would like her guardian to receive copies of correspondence or reports for translation purposes, you can either set up an account for the guardian using the supplied registration codes or send the codes directly to the guardian so they can create an account themselves.

Weekly Parent Bulletin and Head’s Review A Parent Bulletin will be shared with parents and guardians on a weekly basis via email, along with a link to access the Head’s Review. The Parent Bulletin holds the main information and details for the week ahead; whilst the Head’s Review highlights key stories, achievements, and events of the week gone by. Both are an important source of information about what is happening in the School.

11

12

Weekly Student Bulletin A student bulletin will be shared with your daughter on a weekly basis, via email. This will hold all necessary information for the week ahead as well as important notices. Heads of Year will also send a weekly update to their year group.

What to do When your Contact or Personal Details Change Maintaining correct and up-to-date details is of the utmost importance to ensure that you receive information and can be contacted if necessary. For any changes to or to update your personal details, please email School Office schooloffice@roedean.co.uk.

School Social Media

Parents’ Evenings During the academic year, there will be an official date for parents to meet teachers and discuss their daughter’s progress either online or in person. Dates will be communicated at the start of the academic year. Parents’ Evening appointments must be booked using our online booking system. You will receive an invitation from the School Office with a link to book your appointment closer to the time, and these meetings will be held in person. If you live overseas, you will be invited to attend online meetings. If you are unavailable on the specific date, please inform the School Office on schooloffice@roedean.co.uk as soon as possible, so that we can organise an alternative arrangement.

We encourage all parents and guardians to follow our School social media channels. These channels are updated daily and provide news on what is going on in the School, as well as the promotion of key school events:

Food and Snacks Lunch and School Day Snacks

Food Allergies

We promote a whole-school ethos of healthy eating, recognising the important role that good nutrition and hydration play in supporting students’ learning, concentration, performance, and overall wellbeing. When students are properly nourished and hydrated, they are better equipped to engage fully in both academic and recreational activities. By encouraging informed food and drink choices, we aim to foster lifelong healthy eating habits and a positive relationship with food throughout each girl’s school journey.

Our chefs are equipped to accommodate all food allergies and dietary requirements. It is essential to communicate any allergies to the Health Centre and the Head of Year (for day girls) and the HM (for boarders), who will ensure necessary accommodations are made. Students with dietary needs are encouraged to introduce themselves to the kitchen team, who go out of their way in meeting various dietary needs. If you need to reach out to catering, please contact catering@roedean.co.uk

Our Dining Room is a warm and welcoming environment where girls and staff come together as a community. Mealtimes provide valuable opportunities for students to socialise, while also allowing staff to connect informally with the girls and support their wellbeing. As a school that celebrates diversity, we make a conscious effort to provide meals that reflect the wide range of nationalities represented within the Roedean community. Menus are rotated regularly and include themed meals, a variety of options, and careful provision for special dietary requirements. To support healthy hydration throughout the school day, all students are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle to school. Please ensure that water bottles are clearly named.

Meal and Snack Times During the School Day All meals during the week will be taken in the designated dining areas. Morning snack: 10:30-10:50 Lunch: 12:35 Afternoon snack: 16:00-16:10

Pastoral Pastoral Care and Guidance

EDI (Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion)

At Roedean, we deeply understand the importance of pastoral care, and we prioritise it in every aspect of our school life. Our school culture is grounded in holistic and pastoral care, ensuring that every member of staff comprehends its significance and that every student has access to it. We have a large, dedicated team within the school, which takes responsibility for the wellbeing of our students, while also teaching them to take responsibility for themselves. This commitment to pastoral care is at the heart of every student’s success, providing a supportive environment where they can thrive both academically and personally.

Every student at Roedean belongs at Roedean.

Students should see their tutors in the first instance if they have any questions, issues or concerns about their progress, friendships, or anything that they would find helpful to discuss. Students can also talk to their Head of Year or their tutor about anything academic or pastoral related, and house staff if they are a boarder. If there are any concerns about the safeguarding, health or welfare of your daughter, please contact safeguarding@roedean.co.uk.

We aim to instil the following values in all students: We respect and celebrate diversity We nurture a shared sense of belonging We recognise and encourage the best in each other We treat each other fairly We welcome diverse perspectives We challenge discrimination and inequalities Our EDI Lead is Ms Boobis (HBO@roedean.co.uk) and is actively involved in ensuring diversity is celebrated and understood at Roedean.

Pastoral Team Roedean’s priority is for every student to feel happy and safe at school. The Pastoral Team is available to listen, support, and help.

Tutors Your daugther’s Tutor will be communicated at New Girls’ Day.

Boarding Detailed information will be provided in the Roedean Boarding House Handbooks that will be sent electronically by your daughter’s HM. During the month of June, you will have the opportunity to either meet your daughter’s HM in person at the various New Girls’ Day events or be invited to an online meeting if you are unable to attend. This will be an ideal opportunity to ask any questions that you might still have.

Booking Ad Hoc Boarding Nights There are times when it might be easier for a student, who is not ordinarily a boarder, to spend the night at School. This arrangement would be subject to availability of beds. Parents should email the Senior Boarding Housemistress, Mrs Waller, and make a formal request. She will provide confirmation and the relevant information and paperwork by return email and make the relevant staff members aware of the arrangement. Mrs Waller OWA@reodean.co.uk

Boarders’ Packing List Boarders’ Personal Items It is important that all luggage items are clearly labelled with the student’s full name. All items of linen, clothing, including home clothes, must also be clearly named. Boarders should remember that some of these items can be purchased on arrival.

Storage During the Term During term-time, storage is limited to the space under a student’s bed or above her wardrobe. Belongings should be brought or sent in an airlineapproved suitcase (not trunk) which can be easily carried upstairs. Empty suitcases will be stored in the basement/cupboards at the beginning of term, and will be made available to boarders to pack ahead of travelling home. During the three main school holidays, boarders will be asked to clear their rooms and store their belongings in three named 55L red storage crates, 1 duvet bag, and 1 suitcase maximum. No additional items will be permitted.

Change of Boarding Status Clothing If your daughter’s boarding status needs to change (for example, from full to weekly boarding or day to boarding), a full term’s notice must be given, and the request for change must be made in writing and emailed to the Deputy Head Pastoral. The request will be dealt with internally and you will be informed in writing about the outcome of the request.

Boarders may wear their own choice of clothing after school hours. They should bring a suitable selection of sweaters, shirts, skirts, jeans, or trousers. Clothes are laundered each week so two or three changes will be sufficient. They will also need a smart outfit, with appropriate shoes, which is suitable for outings or events, such as black smart clothing for school concerts. A waterproof jacket or warm winter coat is also recommended. If a student is enrolled for Duke of Edinburgh or the annual ski trip, please ensure that there is appropriate clothing for the expedition (a detailed list of requirements will be provided).

Appointment of an Educational Guardian Roedean Educational Guardian Guidelines Roedean welcomes students from around the world. Our international students are part of a vibrant, caring community where diversity is celebrated, and strong friendships are formed. Supported by a dedicated pastoral system, all international students are guided as they integrate into school life. To enhance this support, students must have an additional UK-based adult who can offer both practical and emotional assistance during their time at Roedean. The School’s strong pastoral care is enriched through a partnership between the School, parents, and Educational Guardians. This collaboration ensures open communication, allows for the discussion of concerns, and enables the celebration of each student’s successes. For all international students whose parents live outside the UK, it is a requirement to appoint an Educational Guardian. This is part of the School’s Terms and Conditions, agreed upon when the Acceptance Form is signed. Roedean Educational Guardian Guidelines

Appointing an Educational Guardian The responsibility for appointing an Educational Guardian lies with parents. This is an important decision that requires careful consideration to ensure your daughter receives the best possible support. The relationship between the School, parents, and Guardian is vital. For your daughter to thrive, this relationship must be built on trust and clear communication. Parents should have confidence that the appointed guardian will act with the same care and responsibility as they would themselves.

Roedean strongly recommends that Educational Guardians are accredited by AEGIS or BSA, whose rigorous standards offer reassurance that guardianship services meet high levels of student welfare and safeguarding. BSA: AEGIS:

www.boarding.org.uk www.aegisuk.net

While UKVI guidance permits the appointment of a family member or another responsible adult, this is subject to strict conditions. The UKVI defines a family member as a grandparent, brother, sister, step-parent, uncle, or aunt. If your daughter is to attend Roedean on a Child Student Visa, the appointment of the guardian will need to take place prior to applying for the visa as these details will need to be included in the visa application. Educational Guardians must: Provide evidence of immigration status (British or settled in the UK) Submit a Letter of Undertaking to accompany the visa application Provide the address where the student will stay when not at school Submit valid identification (passport, driver’s licence, or national ID) Be 25 years of age or older Not be a parent of a current Roedean student Not be a current employee of Roedean Not be a university student living in student accommodation Be able to confirm that they do not have any criminal convictions If guardianship arrangements or details change, parents have a duty to inform the School immediately. 37

Responsibilities of the Educational Guardian Educational Guardians are expected to: Act on behalf of the parents in matters relating to travel, health, welfare, and academic progress if the parents are unavailable. Reside within a two-hour drive of Roedean School. Provide safe and appropriate accommodation. A home visit is required for all non-accredited Guardians. Offer accommodation and supervision when the student cannot stay at School, such as, before or after term if travel dates do not align with school term dates, when the student is unwell, recovering, or attending medical appointments, or if the School asks the student to leave temporarily for safeguarding or disciplinary reasons. If the Guardian is unavailable (e.g. due to illness, travel or prior engagements), parents must provide details of an alternative responsible adult, including accommodation address and dates for which the arrangement is in place. Notify the School immediately of any change in address.

Travel Responsibilities If the student is travelling as an unaccompanied minor, the Guardian: must accompany the student, or the family must use the School’s approved taxi service and unaccompanied minor service (additional cost), or the family must confirm any private travel arrangements in writing, ensuring they comply with UKVI regulations (for students on a Child Student Visa)

Ongoing Engagement To further strengthen the partnership between the School, parents, and guardians, we encourage Educational Guardians to attend school events such as: Parents’ Evenings Sports fixtures Concerts and performances Welcome drinks at the start of the academic year Termly social events

Next Steps International Students Attending Roedean on a Child Student Visa If you are applying for a Child Student Visa for your daughter, the appointment of an Education Guardian will be managed by our immigration partner, Sable International, as part of the visa application process.

All Other Students Whose Parents Reside Outside of the UK If your daughter holds the appropriate immigration status to study in the UK, but you reside outside the country, you are required to appoint an Educational Guardian.

Completion of Form Please complete the form below. Upon receipt of the completed form, we will contact the appointed guardian directly to obtain their consent and confirm the arrangements. Appointment of an Educational Guardian

Guardians are responsible for managing delays, cancellations, and ensuring all necessary travel documents (passport, visa) are in order.

Child Student Visa Roedean is a licensed student sponsor with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and is authorised to sponsor international students who require permission to study in the United Kingdom. Students who are not British or Irish citizens, and who do not otherwise hold immigration status that permits study in the UK, will normally be required to apply for a Child Student Visa in order to attend the School. As part of our responsibilities as a licensed sponsor, Roedean is required to ensure that all visa and immigration requirements are met and maintained throughout a student’s time at the School. For students joining the School between Years 7 and 11, a Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) will be issued to cover the duration up to the end of the GCSE programme (end of Year 11). A new CAS will then be issued for the two-year A Level programme.

Sable International We are pleased to be working with Sable International, our trusted partner for all Child Student visa and UK immigration applications. Sable has been providing immigration services for over 30 years and is regulated by the Immigration Advice Authority (IAA) under Registration No. F200100004. Their expertise ensures that all applications are prepared in full compliance with UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) requirements. You can find more information about their services here: https://www.sableinternational.com/uk-educationcorporate-services

Compliance Fee To cover the cost of visa compliance and sponsorship administration, a £650 service fee will be charged to your school account when your daughter joins the School. This is a one-time fee and no additional charges of this nature will be applied during the validity period of her visa. The fee supports the School’s responsibilities in meeting all UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) sponsorship, monitoring, and compliance requirements. The total amount will be billed to your school account in three equal instalments during your daughter’s first year at the School. Please note: This fee is not a UKVI or Home Office charge. Government visa application fees and immigration health surcharge are separate and payable directly to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI).

Passports Parents and guardians are responsible for ensuring that their daughter’s passport remains valid at all times. Applications for passport renewal should be made well in advance of the expiry date to avoid any disruption to visa status or travel arrangements.

Sable International will, on behalf of Roedean, support you throughout the entire process, from the issuing of the Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), through to the preparation and submission of the visa application.

Academics Teaching and Learning

Prep Monitoring

Lessons

Homework supports the consolidation of the work done in each lesson, and preparation for the next lesson is an essential part of the learning process. Teachers will set prep with clear expectations of what is required and when prep is due to be handed in. Teachers will expect prep to be handed in on time, unless a good reason is communicated in advance. Students are also taught how to manage their time and complete prep effectively.

Learning is a collaborative pursuit, meaning that teachers at Roedean plan lessons with a range of individual, paired and group activities and tasks to encourage collaboration and support the development of meaningful relationships. Lessons are 50 minutes long and are designed to spark curiosity and engagement with the subject and to be as interactive as possible. Our ethos is to encourage girls to be intellectually rigorous, share their ideas freely and support one another to develop their passions. We encourage students to take risks, contribute answers, and ask questions in every lesson.

Stretch and Challenge Teachers will teach lessons to the A* grade standard, always ensuring that there is sufficient support and scaffolding built into the lesson materials and tasks to enable all to access the lesson. Lessons will always provide opportunities for additional stretch and challenge.

Digital Devices for Learning Lower School (Years 7 and 8) Currently, our teaching in these year groups prioritises the building of relationships in the classroom, something which we find can often be hindered by the presence of digital technology. Digital devices are therefore used for specific project work or to interact with specific websites or software to enhance learning, as directed by the class teacher Upper School and Sixth Form (Years 9 to13) Students may bring their own devices into lessons and use them for learning only if directed by the teacher. Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Class Notebook/OneNote are our standard platforms for the sharing of lesson materials and the submission of work, where a digital device is used.

In Years 10 to 13 students are expected to manage their own free time (including independent study periods during the day and time after school and at the weekends) to ensure they complete the set and independent work required to make good progress. Lower School (Years 7 and 8) Teachers will set 40 minutes of prep in each of Mathematics and English and 20 minutes of prep in all other subjects each week Upper School (Years 9 to 11) In Year 9, while students are selecting their GCSEs and still taking a broad range of subjects, teachers will set 40 minutes of prep in each of Mathematics and English, and 20 minutes of prep in all other subjects each week. In Year 10, when students are taking fewer subjects, the minimum expectation is that students will undertake 90 minutes per subject of guided and independent prep work each week. Independent prep work includes the consolidation of notes for revision purposes Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13) The minimum expectation is that students will undertake 6 hours per subject of guided and independent prep work each week. Independent prep work includes the consolidation of notes for revision purposes.

41

Formative Assessment – Assessment of Progress for all Year Groups Regular assessment undertaken in the right conditions contributes to progress. Each subject sets its own schedule of assessments throughout the year to meet the needs of the curriculum and support students in their progress. Students are given a clear indication of what is expected, as well as time to prepare. A central overview and regular review of assessments ensures that students are not overwhelmed by too many assessments taking place at once.

Marking and Feedback Effective and targeted feedback is shown by educational research to be a highly effective way of helping students progress. Teachers will mark classwork and prep regularly, and will provide both an indication of where a student has been successful (often using WWW – What Went Well) as well as targeted pointers on how to improve (EBI – Even Better If). Time will be given in lessons or during prep to read teacher comments and act on the advice given. This may include such things as rewriting paragraphs or correcting answers or misunderstandings. It is essential that students engage in this part of the process to help them progress.

Monitoring and Reporting on Progress

Parent Consultation Evenings Parental involvement in academic progress is vital and communication between the school and parents about academic progress is very important. At least once per year there will be an opportunity for parents to meet with each teacher, either in person or online, to discuss progress. Full details of these meetings are shared well in advance to enable attendance. The School also plans for parents to meet teachers separately, should parents be unable to attend the pre-arranged days, or at any time should the need arise.

Academic Honesty, Integrity, and Plagiarism Students are always encouraged to practise academic honesty. Considering the growing impact of Artificial Intelligence on education, the school recognises the need to provide both a safe environment for the exploration of new technology as well as clear guidance on that use, especially for academic purposes. Teachers must be confident that work is a student’s own. Information is shared at a level appropriate to each student’s academic journey about how to use AI appropriately and safely without risking plagiarism. Students preparing for examined courses receive guidance on how to reference the legitimate use of AI and other sources for coursework and other project work.

Grades for current attainment and effort are normally issued at the end of each half-term via the parent portal. These provide an overview of progress and learning behaviour. In addition, parents receive full written reports once or twice per year, issued via the parent portal, to provide more detailed feedback on progress. The Academic Team (Teachers and Heads of Department) and the Pastoral Team (Tutors and Heads of Year) review these reports and grades to ensure that the correct levels of support are in place to help each student to make progress.

English as an Additional Language (EAL) The EAL department aims to provide both academic and pastoral support to students who come to Roedean with English as an Additional Language, particularly if their CEFR level is below C1. Academically, we provide one-to-one and small group lessons which cover language improvement and support for the general curriculum. Pastorally, the EAL department works with Heads of Year to support any students who may need additional support due to their level of English, and there is an open door to all EAL students who want to use the EAL space for study or to have a chat about their experiences. Finally, the EAL department works with all members of the School to help international students acclimatise to cultural differences, and with integration.

Academic Support Provided by the EAL Department Years 7 to 9 Students receive small group lessons which are timetabled against Modern Foreign Languages and/or Latin, and are therefore not charged. During these lessons students work on all four language skills. For example, speaking skills are developed in the form of presentations and class discussions, and writing skills with units of work on different writing formats, such as magazine articles or formal letters.

Years 12 and 13 Students on the Language Pathway course are given a mixture of one-to-one and small group lessons. There is a strong focus on communication skills to enable students to integrate fully and communicate meaningfully with their peers and teachers. Alongside this, students are prepared for university entrance exams by specialist teachers. The curriculum is enriched by excursions and fun weekend activities led by EAL teachers. The Language Pathway course is charged termly. In all year groups, students can request or be required to take a private one-to-one lesson if there is a need. This could be for general support, or if the student or parent would like examination preparation for an English language exam, such as Cambridge B2 First or IELTS. These are charged at the EAL Private lesson rate.

EAL Contact Details Mr Forte Head of EAL cfo@roedean.co.uk Ms Cleary Head of Language Pathway ccl@roedean.co.uk

Years 10 and 11 Small group classes are timetabled during Independent Study or Activity slots and are charged either at the group rate or as a oneto-one lesson. Here students work on their general language skills in addition to receiving support for the English IGCSE Language and Literature curriculum, such as coursework and writing to an exam format.

Learning Support The Learning Support department works with students who have identified learning needs related to SEN. Collaborating with teachers, the pastoral team, and parents, we are committed to making all reasonable adjustments and implementing strategies for success, to enable students’ full participation in academic life and school activities. Students can be referred to the department at any time during their school life by teachers, parents, or themselves. Each student within the department has a student profile, created in discussion with the student. This profile, regularly reviewed and updated, provides information on needs and strategies, and is used to inform and support departments, ensuring students can access all aspects of the curriculum. Providing 1:1, in-class, and small group support enables students to build study skills and develop strategies for confidence and success. Through in-house assessments and screenings, we offer support and advice to parents, providing clear guidance on next steps and whether a referral to an external agency is recommended.

Learning Support Contact Details Mrs Mackenzie Head of Learning Support RLM@roedean.co.uk.

Additional Subject Support This is offered flexibly and to meet the needs of individual students and small groups. Academic support ranges from weekly subject sessions aimed at providing extra time with teachers to clarify uncertainties or simply spending time doing prep in the presence of a teacher. Equally, teachers arrange both regular and ad hoc individual or small group sessions, to provide extra help, or indeed extension, with specific topics or skills.

The teaching team includes five members of teaching staff, offering a range of support including neurodiversity mentoring, literacy building, communication, speech and language skills, support for Maths and dyscalculia, and general study skills. Regular communication with students and flexibility in the support we offer ensure that we are actively listening and responding to each student’s needs. The SENCO is a level 7 qualified diagnostic assessor and a qualified Emotional Literacy Coach, enabling us to provide holistic academic and emotional support. Additionally, the SENCO and Assistant SENCO are both qualified Level 7 access arrangements assessors who conduct formal psychometric tests and can implement access arrangements in compliance with JCQ regulations.

Curriculum Overview Roedean offers a broad and engaging curriculum, which is kept under regular review to ensure it meets the needs of students.

Lower School (Year 7 and 8) The focus in these years is on providing the broadest range of study, to enable students to master subjects with which they are already familiar, or to develop passions in new areas. Time is provided within the curriculum for a genuinely holistic education. Full details can be found in the Year Group Curriculum Overviews which are shared with parents in early July. This document also contains the name and email contact details of the Head of each academic department.

Upper School (Year 9, 10, and 11) During Year 9, students will begin to specialise in their studies. Although they will continue with the subjects studied in Year 8, they will also receive guidance and preparation for the skills required for GCSE study. During the year they will be supported in selecting the subjects they wish to take forward at GCSE level. The curriculum for Years 10 and 11 is based on the requirements of the GCSE (General Certificate in Secondary Education) courses that students are undertaking. GCSEs are two-year programmes of study, designed to foster a wide range of academic skills and teach a broad range of knowledge. The curriculum for each subject is set by an examination board which then also sets the format and content of the examinations which take place during summer of Year 11, with results published in August. Full details can be found in the Year Group Curriculum Overviews which are shared with parents in early July. This document also contains the name and email contact details of the Head of each academic department.

Sixth Form (Years 12 and 13) The curriculum for these year groups is based on the requirements of the GCE A Level (General Certificate in Education – Advanced Level). This is a two-year course in each subject designed to foster rigorous academic skills and teach real depth of knowledge. Students will select A Level courses prior to starting Year 12, and will receive expert guidance from the Sixth Form and Futures Teams in choosing the subjects that will best help them achieve their future aspirations. The curriculum for each subject is set by an examination board which then also sets the format and content of the examinations which take place during summer of Year 13, with results published in August. Full details can be found in the Year Group Curriculum Overviews which are shared with parents in early July. This document also contains the name and email contact details of the Head of each academic subject.

Summer Preparation for New Joiners It is important that students joining Roedean are prepared for the level of expectation and knowledge required for them to make progress. To this end, the curriculum overview document will contain details of the course of study for the coming year, and will also share some work suggested by each subject to help students prepare. This work is advisory only and the extent to which it is completed will depend on whether the topics indicated have already been covered in a student’s previous school. The curriculum, as well as summer preparation work, will be sent to parents or guardians by email in early July.

Co-Curricular Programme With well over 100 activities offered each week, our programme is meticulously crafted to foster the development of your daughter’s current abilities, while also uncovering new talents. We believe in the importance of engaging in a diverse array of activities to cultivate a rich portfolio of experiences. Therefore, we highly encourage your daughter’s participation across nine distinct categories: Exertion, Outdoors, Expression, Performance, Service, Skills, Society, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), and Thinking. Click on the link below to view the activities offered in the current year. The booklet for 2026/2027 will be shared with you by email during the summer holidays. 2025/2026 Co-Curricular Booklet

Co-Curricular Activities for all Year Groups Each day, there are two Co-Curricular slots available for students, offering a full programme of clubs and activities to join, as well as supervised prep slots.

How Many Co-Curricular Activities Must a Student Sign Up For? Year 7 to 9 The expectation is for all students to sign up to at least five co-curricular activities per week (including Period 8 every day from Monday to Thursday)

Outside of organised co-curricular activities and supervised prep, students can socialise with friends, enjoy the outdoor environment, relax, undertake independent study, or join in with any House events that are taking place.

How Does a Student Sign Up for CoCurricular Activities? Roedean utilises SchoolsBuddy as our mobile and web-based co-curricular platform. When new students join the school, they receive a SchoolsBuddy activation email, allowing them to create a personal student account. At the beginning of each term, students log in to their SchoolsBuddy account to select their cocurricular activities. During the initial sign-up period, students can make several preferencebased choices. Additionally, students can sign up for new activities mid-term using the “join request” feature on SchoolsBuddy.

Is There a Cost to Participate in Afternoon Activities? The majority of activities are free of charge. However, some that include obtaining a qualification, such as British Sign Language Level 1 or the Duke of Edinburgh Award, do involve a cost. These costs cover charges set by the awarding body, including enrolment fees and exam expenses, for example. Should your daughter sign up for one of these activities, you will be sent a letter requesting your consent.

Year 10 The minimum expectation is that students sign up to four clubs Year 11 to 13 Students are expected to sign up to at least 3 co-curricular clubs per week 47

Wild Fridays for Lower School

Roedean Diploma

To complement their academic programme, the Year 7 and 8 ‘Wild Fridays’ is a thrilling programme designed to empower students, fostering a deep appreciation for the natural world that envelops them. With a diverse array of activities offered, ‘Wild Fridays’ is a playground for exploration and growth, and serves as a platform for the cultivation of new skills and knowledge.

In 2024, we launched the Roedean Diplomas to recognise the diverse portfolio of skills and attributes that students will develop at Roedean over their educational journey, all which will last a lifetime. Participation in the programme has been hugely popular and has provided tangible evidence of all the varied activities many of the students take part in every day.

Engaging in activities such as Bushcraft, Navigation, Conservation, Land-yachting, and Mountain Biking, students connect with nature and develop resilience, creativity, and a sense of adventure. This unique programme encapsulates the essence of Roedean’s commitment to a holistic education, ensuring that our students thrive both in and out of the classroom.

HHH for Year 7 to 9 Our Head, Heart, and Hand enrichment programme is enjoyed by students in Year 7, 8, and 9. It is delivered through timetabled yeargroup sessions once or twice a week, depending on the year group. During these lessons, students take part in a wide range of activities, including Cooking, Textiles, British Sign Language, Coding and AI Literacy. In Year 9, students also begin age-appropriate careers guidance.

The three diplomas are as follows: Lower School Diploma for Years 7 and 8 Upper School Diploma for Years 9 to 11 Sixth Form Diploma for Years 12 and 13 Each diploma has an equal number of sections representing: Academic Pastoral Co-Curricular Each student must have two-thirds of the sections signed off in order to be awarded the diploma. There is also the opportunity to achieve the diploma with distinction if additional sections are completed and signed off by the relevant member of staff. It is each student’s responsibility to look after their portfolio and to take a proactive approach in asking members of staff to sign off the relevant sections of the diploma.

Activities are delivered through a 5 to 6 week carousel, ensuring students develop a broad range of practical life skills throughout the programme.

Beyond the curriculum, the School puts on two major productions per year, each focusing on a different group of students. In recent years, the School has produced Les Misérables, Six, Matilda, Mary Poppins, Legally Blonde, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Blue Stockings, Jane Eyre, The Sound of Music and Hetty Feather, among others.

Signing up for Private LAMDA Lessons Private Speech and Drama lessons concentrate on perfecting performance skills, exploring scripts, developing vocal and physical characterisation and refining clarity of diction. One-to-one lessons are also a fantastic way to develop selfconfidence, enrich social development and enhance speech and communication skills in a playful and creative environment. With opportunities to perform in termly recitals and take graded LAMDA examinations, lessons are offered in Acting, Verse & Prose, and Musical Theatre and can be taken by any student in a one-to-one setting, however it is sometimes possible to take lessons with a partner if another student is available at the same level. Concerning LAMDA examinations, the student(s) and teacher should discuss all the options available and which are most suitable to ensure optimum progress and enjoyment. Please note that LAMDA lessons in Years 7 to 9 will rotate around academic subjects. Tuition for Private Lessons: Drama Co-Curricular Fee Schedule These are the fees for the current academic year and should be used for guidance only. Co-Curricular Fees for 2026-2027 will be available in early July.

51

Scheme 1: Taster in a special instrument We offer 50% off ten trial lessons in one of the above instruments for talented students Scheme 2: Special instrument as a second study All students studying at least one instrument at Roedean are invited to take up a Special Instrument at a reduced cost; This reduction of 50% of the fees is valid for the duration of the tuition

Scheme 3: Special instrument for academic music students All GCSE and A Level Music students are eligible to apply for 50% off tuition to take up a new Special Instrument as part of their studies at Roedean

Hire of Instruments Although most students are expected to provide their own instruments, the school has several instruments for hire and can also arrange for hire of instruments where a school instrument is not available. Students starting a new instrument are recommended to purchase their own instrument(s) after the first year of study.

Private Lesson Times It is not possible for all lessons to be scheduled in Independent study periods or Activity slots. In Lower School and Year 9, lessons will rotate around academic subjects. Due to the way we timetable these lessons, no student will miss the same curriculum period more than once per half term and, in most cases, only part of a lesson will be missed, meaning that a student can still see the teacher that week to know what prep has been set and what is needed to catch up. Students are encouraged to take the initiative to find out what work they have missed, and they have time during the week to catch up on it. From Year 10, we aim to schedule lessons in Independent Study periods, activity periods, or free time in the afternoons.

School Behaviour, Discipline and Policies Code of Conduct Roedean must aim to be a safe, supportive, friendly, and caring place for every individual member of the school community, girls, and staff. This can only be guaranteed if each of us takes responsibility to demonstrate consideration, concern, care, and respect for each other always. Your daughter is expected to behave well and to maintain high standards of behaviour and promote good, and safe behaviours always. This means treating each other with respect and kindness, seeking help for herself or others when needed, listening to each other and to different perspectives and points of view, and following school rules and expectations to ensure that Roedean is a safe, positive, and happy environment for everyone. Your daughter is expected to contribute positively and to show respect for the school community and school rules, always. This means attending school events, being a respectful audience, greeting visitors, holding doors open for each other, being punctual to lessons, meeting deadlines and following the school dress code. It also means treating members of the school community and school property with care and consideration, keeping the school free from litter and graffiti, and reporting any damage or loss of property, equipment, or possessions. Your daughter is expected to develop her talents and interests and to be inclusive and develop her role as a full member of the wider school community. This means developing interests she already has, getting involved in new activities, joining clubs, volunteering for opportunities, and taking on leadership roles.

It also means mixing with girls outside her immediate friendship group, supporting her friends and peers when they take part in performances or competitions, ensuring no-one is left out in lessons or at mealtimes, and taking responsibility for others by reporting any form of teasing or bullying so that they can be investigated immediately to reduce any unnecessary harm.

Rewards and Sanctions It is well known that teenagers feel safer when soft boundaries are in place for them to test and push against. Therefore, it is important that we have a system in school that offers an opportunity for students to learn that there are often consequences to their actions, both positive and negative, and allows an opportunity for students to be accountable. Students can be awarded Merits for positive behaviour in all areas of school life. These are totalled at the end of each term with students then achieving their bronze, silver, or gold badges. Students can also receive Commendations for outstanding contributions to school life, either for academic or conduct reasons. To recognise this, they will receive a certificate from the Head. Our sanctions guidelines are focused on supporting students and providing them with a chance to learn, understand, and move forwards positively, setting them up for life beyond school. As with our wider and integrated approach to pastoral care, each situation will be taken on an individual basis, with wider contexts also being considered.

Scholarships and Bursaries Scholarships

Bursaries

Scholarships are awarded as recognition of excellent previous achievement and capacity to flourish and deepen interests within Roedean’s holistic learning environment.

Each year, Roedean offers financial support to families starting at Roedean, whose circumstances would otherwise put Roedean beyond their reach. Bursaries must be applied for prior to entry into Roedean. All bursary applications are evaluated using a comprehensive means-tested process.

Scholarships are offered in the following areas: Academic Art Dance Drama Music Sport

When to Apply Scholarships are available to new students on entry into Years 7, 9, and 12. These assessments take place during the admissions process. Current students may apply for scholarships for entry into Year 9 and Year 12. Applications must be submitted in the Spring term of Year 8 for Year 9 entry, and in the Autumn term of Year 11 for Year 12 entry. These applications are only for the application of additional scholarships. All previously awarded scholarships will remain in place. The Roedean Admissions team will provide timelines and guidelines for the relevant year groups at the appropriate times.

Once enrolled, the continuation of an awarded bursary is subject to an annual means-tested assessment and the student’s sustained performance and contribution in the School. Should families experience any financial hardship or challenges along your daughter’s time at Roedean, please email the Roedean Bursary team bursary@roedean.co.uk. Bursary Information

Expectations of Scholars Roedean is committed to developing their scholars, through tailored provision and support in their specialism, throughout their school journey. In return, scholars are expected to maintain the highest standards, representing their area of expertise at whole-school events, to enhance the academic, sporting, and creative profile of the School. We aim for our scholars to develop and pursue their interests during their time at Roedean and to embrace challenge as part of their learning journey.

Roedean Parents’ Guild The Roedean Parents’ Guild (RPG) is a community that welcomes and includes all Roedean parents and guardians. The RPG Committee and Year Reps are parents themselves, often with full time jobs, and understand the pressures of senior school life. The community offers support to parents and guardians to navigate daily life at the School, bringing warmth and good humour to all we do. The RPG organises socialising opportunities, fun events and second-hand uniform sales all while supporting the school’s fundraising goals. There are many ways to be involved, from volunteering at one of our Christmas or Summer Fair stalls, to offering your expertise, or most importantly, joining us at one of our events to meet other parents! Our second-hand uniform sales for students and parents are held throughout the year. All proceeds from our uniform sales go to charity and we welcome all donated items. Our online and in person events are advertised in the weekly Parents’ Bulletins and on the Whatsapp Year Groups through our Parent Year Reps. We are happy to support overseas parents set up online events. Please let us know if you would be interested in being a regional RPG Rep.

Whatsapp Group Protocol The parent WhatsApp groups can be a valuable way to build a supportive parent community, share practical information, and encourage positive communication. We kindly ask all parents to use these groups respectfully and constructively, ensuring that messages remain courteous, inclusive, and relevant to school life.

Concerns relating to individual students, staff, or specific school matters should be addressed directly with the school rather than discussed within group chats. By maintaining a considerate and supportive tone at all times, parents help foster a positive environment for the entire school community. Please look up Roedean Parents’ Guild on the school website for further details, and contact us at parentsguildroedean@gmail.com if we can help you in any way. We look forward to meeting you!

Roedeanian Society and the Old Roedeanian Association (ORA) The Roedeanian Society strengthens connections among all members of the wider Roedean community, including Old Roedeanians (ORs), former staff, and parents. Together, we harness the collective power of the incredible Roedean sisterhood to support the School and our girls. We collaborate closely with the Old Roedeanians’ Association (ORA), our historic former pupils’ association, which is operated by a volunteer committee of ORs for ORs. Through this close connection with our ORs, we are able to provide invaluable support to the girls in the School via a professional global network, mentorship and inspiring lectures.
