Spring 2024

We wish all our agents a very Happy New Year and good health and happiness in the Year of the Dragon!

Thank you for your support over the past year. We look forward to working with you in the next year.

At this half-way point in the academic year, we would like to share some of the remarkable successes that we have enjoyed so far, this academic year:

TES Poetry Competition Winner Medefine Research Award 2024

Amelia, a Year 12 student, has emerged as the national champion in the TES Poetry Competition at the TES SEND Show 2023.

Photographed here with Michael Rosen, former Children's Laureate, and winner of the 2023 PEN Pinter Prize winner for his "fearless" body of work.

The Cricketer’s 2024 Schools Guide

Our cricketers are in the spotlight once again as Roedean is featured as one of the best places for school cricket in Sussex in The Cricketer's highly esteemed 2024 Schools Guide.

We're thrilled to share the latest news that not only did we make the list, but we secured a spot in the top 20!

Women’s cricket was one of the underpinning values of the founding Lawrence sisters’ vision for Roedean, and we are proud to be continuing their legacy well into the 21st century.

Kelly, in Year 11, is a winner of the Research Award 2024 run by Medefine, following a research internship. Kelly created a poster which highlights her research about treatments and genes involved in non-small cell lung cancer. She then adapted her poster into a patient friendly leaflet, about the importance of genetic testing. Her work will be showcased virtually at UCL and may be chosen to be displayed in either the UCL Great Ormond Street Institute for Child Health, or at the Oxford Cancer Charity.

Legally Blonde Year 13 University Offers

Our Spring half-term culminated in a phenomenal production of Legally Blonde. Once again, the Roedean Theatre was transformed as our brilliant performers, from Years 9 to 13, gave their all in a dazzling performance! The performers were accompanied by a talented live band made up of students and staff.

The musical’s emphasis on female empowerment and breaking stereotypes, is a reminder of the important of girls and young women believing in themselves and challenging societal barriers.

Waltzing Through Time

Our recent musical gala concert, Waltzing Through Time was a great success. The concert combined music from different time periods with a dance theme and included classical and popular music. The showcase included performers from the choir, three orchestras and the newest rock band, as well as a number of our talented dancers. It was wonderful to see how the performers moved from Tchaikovsky and the Can-Can to Fat Boy Slim without missing a beat!

Our Year 13 students have started to receive offers from universities, for a range of excellent courses at many different institutions.

4 students have received offers to study at the University of Cambridge and two students have received offers to study at the University of Oxford. This is the highest number of Oxbridge offers that Roedean has received in the last decade! We are very proud of the following students:

■ Amelia – Land Economy at Queen’s College, Cambridge

■ Ella – Politics, Philosophy, and Economics at Corpus Christi College, Oxford

■ Euran – Mathematics at Girton College, Cambridge

■ Ottavia (OR) – Philosophy and Theology at Trinity College, Oxford

■ Rose – Mathematics at St John’s Cambridge, Cambridge

■ Tina (OR) – Mathematics at Newnham College, Cambridge

In addition, six students have secured offers for highly competitive medical courses:

■ Nettie and Dawn – Medicine at Leeds University

■ Sam – Medicine at Aberdeen

■ Ayten – 2 offers for Pharmacy

■ Erin– Veterinary Medicine from the Royal Veterinary College

■ Belle - Veterinary Medicine from the University of Surrey

Students have also received offers to study Psychology and Applied Medical Sciences, both at UCL, Photography at Kingston, History at Exeter, and Business and Management at Durham, to name but a few.

International Women’s Day 2024/2025 Enrolment Update

We celebrated International Women’s Day on Friday, 8 March. Our theme was #InspireInclusion. Although women have more opportunities than ever before, they can still face inequality. The vision of the founding Lawrence sisters was to provide girls with an education that would rival any boy’s education, and this vision remains central to Roedean’s ethos today. We welcomed 22 speakers to Roedean covering a range of experiences and backgrounds. These inspiring women who are at the forefront of their fields addressed our students on topics ranging from “She Changes Climate: Using Female Superpowers for Climate Action” to “A Career in International Diplomacy and Peacemaking”.

As we reach the mid-point of the Spring Term, we are also nearing the completion of our enrolment process for the 2024/2025 academic year.
