Marilyn Monroe’s Brentwood home sells for $7.25M

How do you please everyone when you’ve been trying for 6 years now? That is exactly what developers in Santa Monica are attempting to do with the new Downtown Community Plan. The city of Santa Monica has been yearning to build 20-plus-story high-rises for years now, but slowgrowth activists are not having it. Many activists are on a dramatically different page wanting Santa Monica’s downtown to have buildings no more than two stories high. Opinions have made the planning process arduous to say the least. The city has been bending over backwards trying to compile multiple opinions from civilians and organizations to try and please everyone. Six years later, the decision has almost officially been made to limit the downtown development to buildings of four to five stories in areas near the Third Street Promenade, but would allow high-rises on select sites. If the plan passes at the end of the summer, it will create 2,500 much needed housing units to be built over the next 20 years. However, to help assure slowgrowth advocates that these height regulations will be followed through with, the guidelines would remain in place for seven years. Suspense is growing for activists and some public opposed to this plan as the next few months pass by leading up to the final decision day in July.

The only home legendary actress Marilyn Monroe ever owned has sold for $7.25 million. The sale closed May 31, one day before what would have been the star’s 91st birthday. Monroe bought the property in 1962, after divorcing her third husband, Arthur Miller, as her own private escape. She lived in the intimate Brentwood property for four months before passing.

While Monroe lived there, she immersed herself into making the home perfect for her. She planted a garden and traveled to Mexico to purchase authentic furnishings and tapestries for the home.

To this day, the romantic Spanish-style property contains original elements selected by Monroe herself. Spreading across 2,097 square feet, the famously designed four bed, three bath features, terra cotta tile floors, pitched ceilings with exposed wood beams, a tiled fireplace, a guest house, an outdoor pool and citrus orchard. Before her tragic death, Monroe famously told a reporter with Life magazine, “Anybody who likes my house, I am sure I will get along with.”

Nobu Ryokan Hotel opens new location in Malibu

After undergoing a $7 million remodel a while back, Santa Monica’s Promenade food court concept ‘The Gallery’ is finally getting some new life thanks to a pair of incoming concepts that should emerge by early summer at the latest. ‘The Gallery’ is less of an open-air food hall and more of a two-level food court. Originally, the space was a walk-through filled with tucked-away restaurants across two floors before it went through the massive remodel, but it never really came back online after earning the new look. Now, it seems the place is on track to start opening with some new tenants practically immediately. A few new places to look forward to include, Everytable, the do-good enterprise aimed at making healthy meals affordable and Sloan’s Ice Cream, which currently has another location in Woodland Hills. These should be online by early summer along with many more to come!

When a person has billions of dollars and owns nine houses on Malibu’s exclusive ‘Billionaire’s Beach,’ the only thing left to do to is create a top-of-the-line hotel where it costs about $2,000 a night with a minimum two-night stay. Larry Ellison, the world’s fifth richest person, just added another notch to his Carbon Beach belt building the first Nobu Ryokan brand hotel. Owned by Chef Nobu Matsuhisa, Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, actor Robert DeNiro, and film producer Meir Teper, the hotel covers 9,200 square feet of one of California’s best oceanfront views. Ellison bought the Casa Malibu Inn in 2007 for $20 million and with the help of all the above, has turned it in to an exclusive high-end hotel. The former historic Inn was used as a secret getaway for celebs and will continue to be an exclusive escape, but now with a unique blend of Japanese hospitality. The highend Japanese-inspired hotel has only 11 suites and five oceanfront bungalows, with exclusive guestsonly hotel grounds and pool. Since Nobu Ryokan is located right next to the infamous restaurant Nobu, guests also get to experience a special in-room menu made just for the hotel. The Nobu Ryokan Malibu Hotel is at 22752 Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu.

Candace and Charles Nelson, the couple who brought you Sprinkles Cupcakes, opened Pizzana, a pizza restaurant in Brentwood and is being called “the best pizza I’ve had in LA” by many. And the word is catching on so expect to sit among some celebrities such as Jim Belushi and Chris O’Donnell who is a co-owner.

The cupcake couple have brought their passion for the art of pizza and baking and created a masterpiece.

Chef Daniele Uditi, who is from Naples, makes Neo-Neapolitan-style pies using 48-hour fermented dough.

And for dessert, Candace has created a Neapolitan ice cream terrine and salted caramel panna cotta.

Attention to detail is so obviously shown in each perfectly baked pizza.

Make sure to order LA’s traditional Sprinkle’s ice cream for a sweet escape at the end of your meal.

All that is needed to say when suggesting FIG for brunch is… endless draft beer or sangria. FIG’s Kegs & Eggs option is the perfect beginning to a Sunday. But, don’t limit yourself to just their brunch menu because FIG also offers endless options of cheeses and their infamous warmed pita bread.

FIG restaurant is bringing a more modern and seasonal approach to Mediterranean bistro with a menu inspired by Chef Yousef Ghalaini’s early childhood spent baking and cooking with his grandfather in Lebanon. With a menu like FIG’s and endless kegs, you’ll find yourself wanting to order everything on the menu!

There are just a small handful of really nice places to eat on the Westside after 10 p.m., and Scopa is one of them. The long bar area and the dark environs make for the ideal nightcap for anyone looking to relax and listen to some well-curated tunes. Chef Antonia Lofaso’s interpretation of oldschool Italian food embraces the feelings of the New York boroughs.

Her menu is great for soaking up some booze with a group of friends. Honoring true Italian tradition, the food and ambiance of this restaurant is perfect for enjoying the company of friends and family.

Butterfly Pavilion March 19 - September 4, 2017

Kerry James Marshall: Mastry March 12 – July 3

The Butterfly Pavilion is a seasonal exhibit that showcases hundreds of butterflies and the natural environs where they thrive. Among the butterflies at the museum are subtropical species such as the malachite and the grey cracker, as well as native butterflies such as monarchs, mourning cloaks, and buckeyes. Timed tickets are required for admission to the Butterfly Pavilion, and are available for advance purchase on the NHM website.

Mastry represents a retrospective of the 35 year career of noted figurative painter Kerry James Marshall.

Marshall, who was born in Alabama and grew up in South Central LA, is one of the few African American painters to find mainstream success and this exhibition of 80 paintings demonstrates both the progression of his career and the history of the community that he depicts.

Maven of Modernism: Galka Scheyer in California April 7 - September 25, 2017 Galka Scheyer was an influential art dealer of the first half of the 20th century, responsible for introducing many to the art of Lyonel Feininger, Alexei Jawlensky, Paul Klee and Vasily Kandinsky. This exhibit represents a selection of Scheyer’s personal collection that also includes pieces

by László Moholy-Nagy, Pablo Picasso and Diego Rivera.
