Community News Grow Pods Solutios - A New Way to Grow Healthier Produce

Grow Pods has debuted in the Westside as the solution to urban farming. Founder Shannon Illingworth had the idea to create a system where the origin of food can be traced with an app on your phone. Shannon and his team produce state of the art, custom container farms for farmers, growers, restaurants, hotels, and entrepreneurs/ investors throughout North America. Pod’s can also be designed as a showpiece or retrofitted to look like part of your home depending on what you are looking for in your business or personal life. One of the many benefits of the pod’s is that they can be easily transported, allowing cultivation to take place basically anywhere. This significantly cuts down on distribution times and costs as well as giving consumers access to fresh produce .

Keeping Parking Meter Money on the Westside

Nobody enjoys paying for parking, however the prospect of dishing out a few coins to feed into meters will soon be more appealing. A program that was recently approved by the city of Los Angeles will be giving back a portion of funds collected from parking meters in certain neighborhoods, including Westwood village and Pacific Palisades.

This pilot program is designed to keep the money spent at parking meters in the neighborhood where the money is generated. 15% of the revenue from parking meters in the designated business improvement district areas will go to the BID, under the pilot program. The city lawmakers hope this will bolster local control by allowing residents to make decisions about how best to use money from meters to improve local transportation.

Community News The Culver Steps Development

Construction in downtown Culver City on The Culver Steps Development is coming to an end and Amazon has leased the entire office portion of the project. This development at the intersection of Culver and Washington Boulevard is comprised of a four-story building featuring 75,000 square feet of office space. Along with a massive creative office space included 40,000 square feet of retail and a 35,000-square-foot public plaza.

Community Corporation of Santa Monica develops new housing Last month, The Community Corporation of Santa Monica purchased multiple lots, where it aims to build an affordable housing development. It paid around $12 million for the 0.7-acre property on 14th Street. As of now the land hosts old commercial buildings, but The Community Corporation wants to replace them with a three-story mixed-use project including 55 affordable units and 3,500 square feet of ground-floor commercial space. Monica provided just over $14 million of the total $42 million cost of this project. Santa Monica also afforded the funding for a 39-unit senior affordable project that the Community Corporation wants to build on two neighboring lots, according to the Santa Monica Observer.

Giving San Vincente an Upgrade Last month at the Brentwood Community Council meeting, the San Vicente Walkability Committee made plans to make San Vicente Boulevard more pedestrian friendly without worsening congestion.

San Vicente Boulevard is lined with coral trees and its grassy median is a hot spot for local joggers. Because of this, the ground often gets muddy, tree roots become exposed and the area becomes hazardous to the community’s safety. Some of the suggestions at the council meeting included changing signal timing to allow more time for pedestrian crossing, installing curb extensions and adding a crosswalk for pedestrians. These modifications are necessary to achieve the committee’s goal of adding more foot traffic to the west end of the boulevard.

Eighteenth-Century Pastel Portraits August 28, 2018 – October 13, 2019

The Broad is hosting this special exhibit of artwork by AfricanAmerican artists who were active during the civil rights and black power movements of the 1960’s and 1970’s, and into the early years of the conservative Reagan administration.

LA artists Charles White, Betye Saar, and William T. Williams are among the 60 artists whose work is featured.

The exhibition is organized by Tate Modern and presented locally by Art + Practice, a Leimert Park-based organization.

Hollywood Dream Machines: Vehicles of Science Fiction and Fantasy explores cult classic films and stories that have envisioned fantastic futuristic worlds, technologies, characters and cars. Through props, design drawings and physical vehicle models, this exhibit brings pop culture’s visions of dystopian, utopian, and science fiction worlds to life.

Celebrating a medium that is often overlooked in other time periods, this exhibit delves into the favored form of portraiture in late 18th century Europe. Pastels allowed the artist to create classically beautiful works without the arduous process that oil painting often requires. This flexibility coincided with the growing class of people who patronized portrait artists, creating a unique body of work that represented both an evolving craft and an evolving society.
