Jhalak Doshi
I recently went for a trial class, and I genuinely feel it was one of the most exhilarating experiences I’ve had in a long time. It was tough very tough but in a positive, deeply satisfying way.
I swim, I played sports as a child, I’ve walked and run marathons, gone gymming, and practiced yoga. Yet I honestly don’t think I’ve ever worked out the way I did during this 90-minute karate session. It challenged me physically, mentally, and emotionally in a way that felt purposeful rather than exhausting for the sake of it.
What I really feel sets this apart is that it’s not just about fitness. I think self-defence builds a very different kind of confidence the kind that teaches you to challenge yourself, to fall and get back up, and to stand for what’s right. It pushes you beyond your comfort zone and shows you what your body and mind are actually capable of.
Beyond using karate as a workout, I strongly feel it helps you live life with more conviction and assertiveness both personally and professionally. It gives you courage. It reduces the constant, silent fear of being a victim of violence. It directly addresses the freeze response many of us experience during harassment where instead of freezing, suppressing it, and carrying the emotional and social damage for years, you’re trained to respond, to act, to protect yourself.
I think it also helps you take the necessary steps afterward to hold perpetrators accountable so they don’t go on to violate another person’s dignity. It replaces years of guilt and self-blame with agency and clarity.
Over time, I feel it instills deep self-respect, discipline, integrity, accountability, and responsibility toward yourself. These qualities don’t stay limited to the class they slowly start reflecting in how you live your life. You begin to take yourself more seriously, and life feels more fulfilling when you trust your strength and your instincts.
I genuinely believe self-defence is not just about fitness. It is a basic human skill, regardless of gender. I don’t think it’s fair that we remain vulnerable and expect the other half of society to always defend and protect us. We need to trust ourselves. We need to be able to defend ourselves.
I also think it’s time we stop feeling guilty or being shamed for investing time in our own bodies keeping them healthy, protecting their dignity, and building mental and emotional resilience. That isn’t selfish. It’s necessary. It's a responsibility. No one else's.
I’ve tried the class, and I fully intend on joining the women-only batch. If you’re a woman reading this, I truly feel you should consider doing the same for your own sake.
Let this be a small beginning toward a future where our daughters don’t grow up feeling afraid in their own country or anywhere else. A future where self-defence is normal, accessible, and encouraged, like in countries where it’s considered a basic life skill for everyone.
I feel this is something every woman should experience at least once. For herself. For her
