It is my favourite time of year - when the cold months make way for lush florals, outdoor soirées and colourful celebrations that are so distinctly spring and summer! Although Canadians are no stranger to unexpected weather, alternative ceremony options and chilly summer nights - there is an undeniable air of fun, spontaneity and creativity in each wedding and editorial that comes by my desk throughout these months. It brings me great joy to be able to share them in the pages ahead.

For all of the Canadian couples planning their special days, it is my hope that this publication provides endless amounts of inspiration for your own warm weather wedding. PAIGE + REINHARD

In 2017, Paige and Reinhard first met at a bar in South Africa. It all started when Paige boldly asked to sit on Reinhard’s lap, and with a charming smile, he welcomed her into his world. From that moment on, the pages of their love story were written, and the rest is history. Five years later, Reinhard proposed on the beach in Paige’s hometown of Durban, South Africa. For their engagement photos, Paige and Reinhard chose an early morning sunrise session in Banff Natitonal Park surrounded by nature. Despite the breathtaking colours displayed in the sky, the couple loved the stillness and peaceful atmosphere at that time, which allowed them to fully immerse themselves in the moment and be present with each other. “Choosing the mountains as our backdrop wasn't just about aesthetics; it was about creating an intimate, meaningful experience that perfectly encapsulated our love and connection,” Paige explains.

SHALLU + DANNY

Three and a half years after meeting in dental school, Shallu and Danny travelled to Bali together. When the couple arrived at the resort, they were greeted with cocktails and a formal dinner. Shortly thereafter, Danny excused himself to use the restroom and Shallu received a box with a note from Danny which presented a playful scavenger hunt through the resort property. “I followed the clues and completed the puzzles - he knows how much I love a challenge and had planned it out so well,” Shallu shares. Eventually, the clues led Shallu to a board of photos of the two, she then solved the Scrabble tiles to spell out “beach.” As Shallu moseyed down to the beach, someone gave her a gift box and said it was from Danny. The box was a cartoon book going through the story of their relationship with Danny proposing at the very end. Shallu continued to the powder-soft sand shore at sunset where Danny was patiently waiting amongst rose petals, an arch of florals and a candlelit cave with a private chef. Needless to say, Shallu was speechless. “It was so thoughtful and beautiful and well planned. He had hired secret photographers to follow me throughout the puzzle, and we shared dinner in the most romantic seaside candlelit cave. Danny even engraved the ring a few months earlier with the exact date he would propose - December 6, 2019,” the bride reminisces.

Annie and Mike initially met at a rock climbing facility. Annie impressed Mike by asking for his phone number after their first meeting. Three years later, during a road trip from San Jose, California, to Boston, Massachusetts, Mike proposed to Annie. The couple had visited Seattle, Washington, Vancouver, British Columbia, and Banff, Alberta, during their cross-country drive. Since they had never seen the Canadian Rockies before, Mike decided to pop the question during a photo shoot with the help of Corinna Walker, a Calgary-based boutique wedding and portrait photographer. On September 9th, 2023, Mike got down on one knee and asked Annie to marry him.

Amanda and Ryan’s love story started in an unexpected place - a Super Bowl party in 2020. Ryan was there to enjoy Shakira’s performance during the halftime show, while Amanda was there for the social buzz. Despite the sparks in the air, they didn’t interact during the party. It wasn’t until a mutual friend’s camping trip that they started to connect. Ryan was asked to pick up Amanda, and something clicked during that trip. Maybe it was Amanda’s light-hearted tease about Ryan's driving style, Ryan’s cool demeanour, their mutual love for music, or just the natural comfort they felt in each other’s company. North Arm Farm did an amazing job by quickly rearranging the reception tables in the indoor area when it started raining. The teamwork was amazing and all the staff were so supportive and positive.

Humbled by prayers and support from dear friends, Ryan popped the question at the Squamish Estuary. Amanda’s mother and brother were visiting from Brazil, so Ryan used this opportunity to show them this beautiful part of British Columbia. After a day of hiking and frozen yoghurt, Ryan suggested that there was one last place they had to see. They drove on a gravel road and parked, then followed a path that led them to a small wooded area. Ryan had his family set up lights and Polaroid pictures they had taken over the years. On the other side of the wooded area was a clearing where Ryan proposed, getting down on one knee, with the coastal mountains as their backdrop. With an excited “yes,” they decided to embark on their most significant journey yetmarriage. Amanda and Ryan went on to host a wedding for 100 of their closest family and friends at North Arm Farm featuring a natural aesthetic, a surprise rain shower and one epic dance party!

ADVICE TO FUTURE COUPLES

“A tip we would love to share is the value of simplicity. A wedding is such a special day, and surprisingly, keeping it uncomplicated can create more memorable moments. Keeping your mind clear and free from every little detail, leaves room to truly absorb and appreciate the main events of the day. Another tip is to embrace the imperfections. I remember feeling frustrated when I thought about the rain on our wedding day. However, I found an article saying ‘Once you recognize that your daily life consists of imperfections, you can accept that your wedding day is another imperfect day.’ That helped me to accept that we don’t need to force our wedding day to be perfect, it’s a day just like any other, with its own unique highs and lows. Despite everything, it remains a beautiful and significant part of our lives.”

Marjorie and Darren were introduced through Facebook, thanks to their parents who were friends. After spending five wonderful years together, Darren proposed to Marjorie in their home.

The couple tied the knot in early spring at the iconic Fairmont Banff Springs castle, nestled in the Canadian Rockies at the base of Rundle Mountain, where they originally had their first date. Only seven guests attended the intimate wedding ceremony to witness their exchange of vows.

The bride made a playful statement by sporting a feminine mini dress with three-quarter length sleeves and ruffles on the hemline. Marjorie accessorised her little white number with sparkling crystal-embellished heels from Jimmy Choo and carried an ivory bouquet. The reception was held in the Grapes Wine Cellar, where all-white florals filled the space. Before cutting into their sophisticated yet minimalist two-tier cake, Marjorie and Darren enjoyed their newly married status by sipping on Dom Perignon.

In the summer of 2018, Idara moved from Maryland to San Francisco, California, to start medical school, while Adam moved from Vancouver to San Francisco to start his PhD. Idara and Adam’s paths most likely would not have crossed if they hadn’t attended a mixer for new university students. Adam saw Idara across the room and approached her with the help of his roommate. Two and a half years later for Idara’s birthday, Adam planned a date night at an escape room. “We love puzzles and games, so we excitedly dressed up to match the spy theme of the escape room. After we escaped, a staff member handed me an Amazing Race-style envelope and said, ‘Here’s your next clue.’ When we got to our apartment, I opened the envelope to find a crossword puzzle. Adam and I do a crossword puzzle together most mornings, but this one was special. The clues were our story: our favourite memories, inside jokes and places we visited. The puzzle was stamped with different coloured hearts, and the letters in those hearts spelled out ‘Will You Marry Me?’ Adam gave a beautiful speech which neither of us can remember and I said, ‘Yes!” Idara shares.

For their wedding, Idara and Adam escaped the Bay Area and retreated to a 55-acre botanical garden oasis situated in the Shaughnessy neighbourhood of Vancouver. The event infused romance and whimsy with a colour scheme of warm yellows, oranges, and pinks to complement the deep greens and sylvan setting. Idara stunned in an ultra-feminine gown by Madi Lane Bridal featuring layers of whisper-thin tulle and vine-like motifs climbing across the sheer bodice before winding down the A-line skirt and dissipating. The inspiration for the look? Garden fairy princess, which Idara perfectly captured with the addition of custom off-the-shoulder sleeves and a crystalstudded headpiece. In the evening, Idara and Adam surprised their guests with an outfit change into traditional Nigerian wedding attire. In Nigerian culture, it is customary for each side to wear a matching colour to show their relationship to the couple. Once the dancing commenced, Idara and Adam, their immediate families and the bridal party all changed into their attire made in Nigeria and flown in for the reception.

When Sharan and Gagan met in elementary school, they started off as friends, but as time passed their friendship turned romantic. After dating for nine years, Gagan took the opportunity to propose during a planned photo shoot while on vacation in O'ahu, Hawaii. On the south shore of the island surrounded by a stretch of white sand and turquoise blue water, Gagan got down on one knee and asked Sharan to marry him. The couple wanted their wedding to evoke a timeless sense of modern elegance with neutral tones tied into the overall design aesthetic.

With 350 guests in attendance, Sharan and Gagan held a traditional Sikh marriage ceremony known as the Anand Karaj meaning “Blissful Ceremony” at a family-owned and operated farm nestled in the outskirts of Ladner Village in Delta. Sharan wore a traditional red lehenga and accessorized with henna art and gold jewellery while Gagan donned a white Sherwani. Once the ceremony concluded, the newly married couple changed into a second ensemble and were whisked away by helicopter to exchange vows on top of the mountain range before their grand entrance at British Columbia’s Sky Hangar. At the reception, Sharan stunned in a strapless, corset gown by Ines Di Santo featuring embroidered lace appliqués and detachable sleeves with classic pumps in ivory floral lace. Gagan looked charming in a black and white suit from Modello Bespoke.

Years before Julie and Kevin reconnected, the now-couple attended the same high school. While Julie didn’t know Kevin during their teenage years, Kevin had quite a crush on the adorable blonde girl. After three years of dating, Kevin proposed at their favourite spot while walking their dog. “I turned around to talk to Kevin and he had wrapped a sign around our dog that read ‘Mom, will you marry my Dad?’ It was completely unexpected!” Julie fondly remembers. After cancelling a destination wedding in 2020 due to travel restrictions, Julie and Kevin decided to host a wedding for their guests to attend with minimal uncertainty, while also incorporating a weekend of events. The Okanagan Valley seemed to be the perfect setting, especially with its California ambience during the summer months.

Guests enjoyed the breathtaking lake and mountain views amongst rolling vineyards at the couple’s ceremony, which took place at 99 Rows. Julie walked down a meandering aisle covered in rose petals toward Kevin and their young son to an acoustic version of “Yellow” by Coldplay. For the ceremony and cocktail hour, Julie wore a romantic Galia Lahav gown featuring delicately embroidered lace with three-dimensional flowers, a draped V-neckline and an accentuated trumpet-shaped skirt. She accessorized her ethereal look with a cathedral veil and Loeffler Randall heels. Kevin wore a black tuxedo by Zegna with patent leather shoes from Gucci.

When Anthony noticed Caitlyn’s Instagram profile, he took immediate action and sent her a DM, which started a long-distance relationship that spanned between Michigan, where he played professional hockey at the time, and Florida, Caitlyn’s home state. Jordan and Brett’s love story began outside of Champs Sports Bar in their hometown of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Jordan developed a secret crush on Brett after hopping in the cab with him and his buddies to go six blocks down the street. However, the duo didn’t have any communication for the next two years as Jordan began her career in Saskatoon and Brett moved to Calgary. One night before Christmas in 2017, Jordan came across Brett on a dating app and decided to shoot her shot with a bold pickup line. She then hitched a ride with a friend to Calgary where Brett bought her $5 Chardonnay on their first date and quickly realized she was in love with him. For the next eight months, the couple travelled back and forth to see each other until Brett asked Jordan to move in with him. “Crazy, I know. Just ask my parents,” Jordan laughs. Three years later, Brett proposed on a bitterly cold -26°C day in Lake Louise. “Somehow, he convinced me to go on a walk through two feet of snow, where a secret photographer was ready to capture the moment and champagne waited in the room,” Jordan remembers.

On the morning of the wedding day, Jordan got ready in a short satin slip and lacy white robe from Lerose before changing into a luxurious matt stretch crepe dress by Vagabond Bridal. To complete her classic ensemble, Jordan accessorized with freshwater pearl drop earrings from Simone Martin and pointed-toe heels. The bride’s flouncy and organic bouquet perfectly complemented the natural mountain landscape of Canmore where the couple exchanged vows against the alpine ambience. As Jordan and Brett began planning their nuptials, they focused on creating a fun atmosphere with the people who were most important to them. With the help of local vendors, Jordan and Brett dreamt up a classic wedding that will remain in style for years to come.

Katie and River’s love story began when Katie was home from university and went out with a friend who was dating River’s closest friend. Nearly eight years later, River proposed to Katie at her favourite beach near where she grew up. He planned a picnic and decorated a gazebo, but the tide rolled in, and restricted him from getting to the gazebo in time. However, he quickly came up with an alternative solution and arranged the words “Marry Me?” to be illuminated by candlelight. With a timeless garden party aesthetic in mind for their big day, it was a clear choice for Katie to say “yes” to a Monique Lhuillier gown which combined classic elegance with modern sophistication. Her off-the-shoulder ball gown silhouette was simply stunning, and she completed the look with a romantic low bun hairstyle and face-framing curls. To complement the beautiful gardens at Noisy Acres Garden Estates, Katie enlisted the help of Cailyn from Persephone Bloom Studio to bring her vision to life as flowers were the most important element of the day for her. The romance of the day extended beyond the ceremony well into the evening. Opting for an intimate last dance instead of a formal send-off, Katie shared, “We expected it to be just us, alone on the dance floor after everyone had left and requested “Lover” by Taylor Swift. To our surprise we still had so many friends and family there well after midnight and they ended up forming a swaying dance circle around us. Such an unexpected, cute and special moment. Luckily one of our guests was able to film it so we can keep it forever.”

“Practice your first dance! We didn’t pay for lessons or plan anything elaborate or choreographed, but we did take the time to practise with our first dance song. It was just us in our kitchen every now and then, timing a couple of spins and a dip. It just made us more comfortable and less nervous. Also, just make sure to relax and take it all in when you can. You are there to celebrate your love together. It goes by quickly, but you will never regret taking a moment to soak in it all.”

Emmanuelle and Zayan invited 40 guests to join their charming summer fête, where a simple ceremony led to a large family dinner. The relaxing setting allowed loved ones to feel comfortable and essentially at home. Fashion was essential to Emmanuelle, who wore a pure silk ivory gown by Michelle Mason featuring a high halter neckline, an open back and dramatic ties trailing behind. From what started as friends in the eighth grade to sharing answers to math tests sophomore year of high school to spending all summer long chatting on Facebook Messenger their senior year, Kay and Michael’s love story is one for the books. After ten years of dating, Michael asked Kay to marry him at The Garden Strathcona in the upper loft complete with an arrangement of florals, candles, instrumental music and a gallery wall of photos. “He walked me through each pivotal moment and then got down on one knee and popped the question,” Kay remembers. As a wedding planner, Kay has had the pleasure of working at several beautiful venues in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. That being said, the magic was lost in a sense when choosing a venue as a bride, herself. In the end, The Wallace, a modern-meets-industrial atmosphere located on the waterfront at the Shipyards, won over Kay’s heart with its stunning natural light and blank canvas space. The day was filled with playful touches from juicy peach and pink tones to fun personalised details such as scalloped-shaped stationery and custom merch for guests to enjoy long after the nuptials.

Tianna and Mitchell met at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. Tianna played on the varsity soccer team, and Mitchell played on the football team. Despite running in the same social circles and attending the same events, their paths never crossed until their third year at university. After meeting, Mitchell set his sights on Tianna and earned a single study date after six failed attempts of asking Tianna out on a date. Fortunately, she finally caved and never looked back. Five years later, Mitchell proposed while they were in Victoria for an Ironman race. Under the guise of watching Mitchell’s race with Tianna’s sister and best friends from university in town visiting, it was the perfect distraction from what was going on. Afterward, everyone went back to the Airbnb, which was a beautiful, serene cabin on the ocean in Willis Point. While the girls were getting ready for dinner, the guys set the stage for the proposal. “I could hear music playing when I stepped outside, then saw Mitchell waiting for me on the private coastline, bouquet and ring in hand,” Tianna remembers.

Darcie, Darcie, DARCIE!! From the numerous zoom meetings, late night texts, DIY advice and overall support she provided us, we couldn’t have done it and stayed sane without her!

Tianna and Mitchell worked with Darcie Coulter, founder and creative director of Engaged By Darcie, to design a romantic al fresco wedding with a neutral-inspired colour palette. When the couple toured Hilltop Wedding Center, just a mere mile from the resort town of Sylvan Lake, they were blown away by the property and felt it was the perfect place for their day. Leading up to the special day, Tianna and Mitchell wanted their attire to be classic yet elevated with details that reflected their style. Tianna shopped at The Bridal Boutique in Calgary, where she found a fit-and-flare strapless gown by Martina Liana with custom sleeves. Mitchell wore a custom Italian tuxedo by Atelier for a James Bond vibe and accessorised with black loafers from Luca Del Forte.

The concept of Beauty in the Badlands was born out of a desire to define desert chic micro weddings that married the natural landscape of the sandstone hoodoos. Taking inspiration from the Drumheller Badlands, this editorial brings bold fashion and a modern edge to the runaway bride. As captured by Maxine LaGarde Photography, the Calgary-based photographer collaborated with The Blondie Bride to create a contemporary spin on bohemian-style affairs.

Can we hear a little commotion for the bride who rocks a modern yet classic mini? Tailored from a classic stretch satin, while paired with a dramatic off-the-shoulder ruffle, Ryce’s clean look makes her a gorgeous canvas for styling. A bouquet of peach ranunculus, blush garden roses, chamomile and eucalyptus felt absolutely darling for springtime nuptials.

The ceremony dress of our dreams is a sweetheart of a slip made from silky charmeuse material. Designed by Watters, the gown is irresistibly sexy and can easily be dressed up or dressed down, making her the perfect addition to any wedding day wardrobe. From the ceremony to the reception, a palette of neutral earthy tones paired with pink and golden hues brought an element of playful femininity to an otherwise masculine atmosphere.

A heart shaped cake with the words just married written on it in white frosting was inspired by vintage vows. The Lambeth design with classic French vanilla flavour and a pink strawberry filling is sure to be a conversation starter at your elopement or intimate wedding. No matter how you get married, this popular and trendy cake will be the talk of the town for years to come.

Flower Pop

Inspired by the thoughtful composition and blending of different flower types, hues and textures, this editorial is modern and romantic. Artistic director and floral designer, Janelle of Flowers by Janie incorporated the design style known as Tropical Nouveau which is when tropical flowers are blended with temperate flowers; a departure from the traditional rule that dictates blooms native to different regions cannot be harmoniously arranged together. Melissa Dawn Event Designs and Heidrich Photography wanted to show couples that a celebration bathed in bright hues can still be individualized, detailed and sophisticated.

The team selected Azuridge Estate Hotel, a boutique hotel situated on 13 acres of rolling foothills in Alberta, as the location for their styled shoot. For the ceremony setup, they took inspiration from art galleries and opted to place the floral arrangements inside the acrylic pedestals rather than on top as conventionally done. The choice of flowers, including tropical orchids, calla lilies and anthuriums, paired with garden roses, tulips, ranunculus and other seasonal florals, created a harmonious statement, while contrasting colours, such as soft and vibrant yellow and pink, added interest while keeping the style contemporary and unique.

The three-tiered cake designed by Bake My Day was in line with the ultrafeminine colour palette of the event’s decor. Painted in pale shades of buttercup and peony, using an origami-esque technique, the decadent treat was accented with handmade sugar flowers. Strips of fondant were precisely cut, folded and dried, creating individual folds that were then assembled onto the confection. This gave the cake the appearance of being one folded unit.

Inspired by the colours, scent and luxuries of the first breath of spring air, Brittany Sagal Event Design and Hattie Root Photography collaborated to create an elegant bespoke editorial. With a soft palette of peach, blush, white and touches of cream, the creative team was able to showcase how weddings can be both sophisticated and playful on the West Coast. The bride carried a wild yet whimsy bouquet of flowers, designed by Bespoke Blossom, which complemented her Daalarna gown that featured a nude mesh bodice and floral lace appliqués. This styled shoot was an effortless interpretation of the moment when you realize that there are warmer days ahead.

The table was set in a posh and pampered style, with meticulous attention to detail to enhance the overall guest experience. Each place setting included individual charcuterie cloches and petite bottles of bubbly, aiming to engage and evoke an emotional response. The seasonal tablescape incorporated unexpected elements such as fresh fruit and dehydrated kiwis. Last, but certainly not least was a two-tiered vanilla bean flavoured confection with blackberry and white chocolate buttercream, made by July’s Girl Cake Co. To create the unique shape of the bottom tier, custom scalloped edge guides were used making it a truly a delightful treat.

PASSION IN PARADISE

Drawing inspiration from the natural Hawaiian splendour on Maui’s north shore, founder and lead designer Ashley-Dawn of Fiore Fine Events was influenced by the exotic jungle along the road to Hana meets an old-world charm aesthetic. Stationery by Seeking Light Studio created a cohesive and refined feel to the celebration through monograms, envelope liners, swirling calligraphy, wax seals and silk ribbon. The colour palette was intentionally subtle and organic as the creative team incorporated Monstera Leaf foliage and lush vegetation, with pops of pink in the bridal bouquet.

Revel Photography captured the ceremony set amid an abundance of tropical flora and fauna inside the Studios at Vic Park. Located in Calgary’s Victoria Park, the studio is a loft event space with floor-to-ceiling west-facing windows that are ideal for intimate and naturally lit nuptials. The bride stunned in a fairytale-like, garden gown from Calgary's Blush & Raven Bridal Boutique designed by Daalarna, with the romantic yet modern bride in mind, while the groom wore a tailored grey suit from Ed Williams Mens Wear.

Classic yet bohemian elements were added to the island-inspired reception, such as wooden dining chairs with airy rattan detailing. The tables were adorned with a mix of low arrangements of greens in gold vases, while the glassware and linens kept a low profile, but reinforced the aloha spirit. The couple cut into a two-tiered minimalist cake featuring handpainted buttercream flowers, accented with edible gold paint and foil. The flavours inside were anything but boring, consisting of roasted strawberry and sumac and toasted coconut.

In keeping with the monochromatic nature of Simone’s designs, Our Little Flower Company created a white arrangement of roses, chrysanthemum and baby’s breath to effortlessly complement hand-cut floral appliqué and delicate lace on the bridal gowns from Everly Fine Bridal. Simone styled the gowns with her Augustina line, that feature hand-dipped wax florals to create a modern, minimalist twist on the french tradition of wearing wax flowers on your wedding day. The Zinnia Hair Pins, which are hand beaded with precision cut glass beads mimic baby’s breath add an elegant, subtle detail to the hair.
