EDITOR’S LETTER
Being born and raised in Colorado, I found my love for the Rockies in a state that holds so many beautiful places. Through the years, I’ve been lucky enough to travel to many of the other states across the Rockies and have found a certain charm to all of them. Something about the fresh air blowing through the evergreens, or the sand blowing across the Southwest deserts, and the aqua blue lakes in the north, I couldn’t think of a better place to say “I do!” than the Rockies. As I begin to plan my own Rocky Mountain wedding using RMB, I hope that within these pages you will find all the inspiration and tips you need to make your day everything you want it to be. We’ve scouted the best of the best in your area to provide you trusted local vendors. Happy Planning!

S E A S O N A L W E AT H E R With year-round beautiful weather and clear days, Moab shines as an ideal wedding location. From May to August, the weather is warm and sunny, perfect for an outdoor ceremony. Fall brings cooler temps making it the most popular time of the year to tie the knot. If you are looking for that fall weather vibe and plenty of rays, September might be your best bet with average temps in the high-80s. On the other hand, if you are wanting a cozy and cool ambiance to your day, look to January. For a more moody day, check out March. While it might be overcast, clouds instantly add a dramatic feel, and they say rain on your wedding day is good luck, right?

W H AT T O P A C K Guiding guests on what to pack for your wedding can take a lot of the guesswork out of their decision. Feel free to add your wedding attire, whether it be cocktail casual or black-tie optional, to your wedding website. Here is also a great place to add little tidbits too, such as packing a shawl for the cooler months, sunglasses if you are having an outdoor summer ceremony, or flats if you are tying the knot in a National Park.
ACTIVITIES Just a few miles north of Moab, lies one of the most breathtaking and unique places in America, Arches National Park. With more than 2,000 natural stone arches, as well as hundreds of pinnacles, buttes and balancing boulders, Arches National Park is a red-rock wonderland for any adventurer. Take Delicate Arch Trail, a moderate three mile out-and-back route, to see the famed arch of the same name. From March to October, jump on the Sound and Light Show Boat Tour of the Colorado River with Canyonlands by Night and Day. Enjoy a cowboy-style Dutch oven dinner overlooking the river before boarding a flat-bottom boat for a cruise up the river. Once darkness settles in, 40,000 watts of natural light illuminates the canyon walls as the history of the area comes to life through shadows, lights, music and narration. Located 14 miles up scenic Highway 128, Castle Creek Winery sits on the historic Red Cliffs Adventure Lodge. Sip on local pinot noirs, merlot, chenin blanc and chardonnay as you take in the rugged Western landscape, dramatic red rock cliffs and white water rapids of the Colorado River. Castle Creek offers tastings on the top floor of the winery Monday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Make it official In the state of Utah, you can get your marriage license at any county clerk’s office. Your partner and you must both be in attendance with proper identification. You will be asked multiple questions while you are there such as when and where are you getting married or if you’ve had any previous marriages. It will cost $40, and the license is valid for 30 days. The state of Utah does not require you to be a resident or have a blood test, but two adult witnesses must be present at your ceremony.

Lindsay + Ryan c a s t l e va l l e y
Lindsay and Ryan met through a very close set of mutual friends. In fact, Lindsay’s best friends are married to Ryan’s best friends! After two years of dating, the pair set off to a secluded spot north of Scottsdale, Arizona, called Humboldt Lookout. While soaking in the landscape from the high vantage point, Ryan asked Lindsay to marry him, and he caught it all on camera with his GoPro! Lindsay and Ryan planned an earthy, boho wedding for September 21st.

One of Lindsay and Ryan’s favorite moments of the day was exchanging gifts before the ceremony. Ryan gifted Lindsay a custom pair of Airpods with their names and wedding date engraved along with an acoustic guitar recording of their first dance song performed by Ryan. Lindsay bought Ryan and her coordinating jackets that said “Till Death Do Us Part” as well as cologne and perfume to remind them of the day every time they wear it.

“The ceremony was very special as it was just our closest friends and family. Ryan’s dad played the guitar as I walked down the aisle, and his sister was the one to marry us. The highlight of the reception was definitely farm to table meal. The chef was very intentional with her menu and the food was out of this world. It was so special to share with our closest family and friends and to feel so welcomed at the farm where our meal was grown, prepared and served.” - Lindsay

Hannah and Kyle met when Hannah moved to Denver for an internship. Kyle was intrigued by Hannah’s adventurous lifestyle, and she loved his desire to join her on the adventures. Over the next few years, the couple fell deeper in love going to concerts at Red Rocks Amphitheater, summer camping trips and traveling around the nation to attend music festivals. Hannah and Kyle endured three years of long distance, which made them realize they were better together and wanted to spend the rest of their lives with each other.

Hannah had just found out she was moving back to Denver after three years of long distance, and Kyle and her were excited to start their lives together again. On New Year’s Eve 2018 about 30 minutes to midnight, Hannah made a sassy comment about how she thought they were going to get engaged in 2018, but Kyle’s only response was “Sorry.” However, right before the clock struck 12 a.m. Kyle proposed, and the couple brought in 2019 engaged! photographer

Yasmine and Harry were set up by mutual friends, and the couple’s first date was an awkward blind date with one of their friends acting as a chaperone. Yasmine didn’t even give Harry her number, but he left the date intrigued and tracked her down on Instagram. The two started messaging back and forth but didn’t meet up again for two more months. Upon that second meeting, things just clicked, and the pair have been inseparable ever since. Yasmine and Harry share a love of travel and adventure. During a fun-filled trip to Mauritius, off the east coast of Africa, the duo enjoyed swimming with wild sperm whales and hiking through the Ebony Forest. On one of their hikes, with Le Morne Brabant shining in the distance, Harry got down on one knee and asked Jasmine to be his forever!

“Since we are from the Philippines, we wanted to elope a bit further away from home. We were able to search many places and vendors online that offer elopement packages, but Desert Harbor Retreat just had a different appeal. Raymond with Desert Harbor created a very tailored elopement that didn’t copy an elopement of someone else. We were very lucky that we chose Raymond to orchestrate our elopement and Shutterfreek to document it.”

Lindsey & Cory c a s t l e va l l e y
Lindsey grew up coming to Moab every summer. While working as a nurse in Moab, a mutual friend set Lindsey up with Cory, a horse-riding wrangler cowboy. The pair fell in love below the red rocks and red dirt landscape of the place they both call home. One year later, Cory proposed right before Christmas as an early present for Lindsey! Lindsey and Cory planned a Western-inspried, bohemian wedding for September 28th.

experience of a lifetime
“We wanted our wedding to be one of a kind, something no one would forget. Luckily we live in one of the most beautiful places in the world. Surrounded by red rocks, the Colorado River and La Sal Mountains, what else could you ask for? With the help of family, we planned our own wedding and built our own venue. We set up teepees, built the furniture out of hay, strung the lights and built our dance floor. It was an experience of a lifetime!”

A LITTLE BIT OF WIND “Getting married in an open hay field, there was quite a bit of wind. As Cory was walking down the aisle, he made a quick joke to everyone that it was all going to be okay, the wind wasn’t going to stop us. The wind blew the tent over on the string quartet. It blew over a tray of food. At the end of the day, we wouldn’t change a thing. To us, it was perfect.”

introducing
Q & A with
Angela Hays By: Erin Mitschele What is your favorite part of the job? I used to be a park ranger at many of the western national parks. I loved working outdoors, protecting the resource and chatting with visitors. But I missed creating! As an artist, being creative is a huge piece of who I am. My job as a photographer combines all of my passions: the outdoors, people, and creating into one. Now I get to wander the national parks with incredible couples from all over the world, and create stunning images that they’ll cherish forever. What is your favorite tool of the trade? Asking couples to share their “how we met” stories! I genuinely love to hear them since every single one is unique. It’s also a great way for the couple to feel their love for each other, to relax, and it also gives me insight into their personalities. Knowing their personalities helps me prompt them into natural poses that create images true to who they are and their love-- and aren’t just copycat images from the internet. Where do you come up with your ideas? I spend a lot of time trail running and mountain biking. I find my best ideas come when I am out on the trail. My mind wanders while my body moves and new ideas will come to mind. Most of these have to do with the business side of the job-- like how to reach more people, how to improve, how to expand etc. Ideas for poses are always on the fly. When I am out in that beautiful desert light with the couple and we are having a great time, ideas come organically and naturally. I find that if the couple feels comfortable, beautiful images happen naturally. Ideas flow as I observe that very moment: weather, style, personality, location, unique traits, details, etc. What is one thing you wish you could educate your clients on? Be you! Every couple is unique and their love should be celebrated. I have never done a stylized shoot for this very reason. I believe authenticity and imperfection are the very essence of art and beauty in photography. If it’s contrived, there’s no feeling! Also, please pretty please let me know if you’re super afraid of heights on cliff edges. K, thanks. ;) What is your greatest fear? Accidentally biting down on an unpopped kernel of popcorn. Or crashing on my bike and busting out my front teeth. If you’ve had that dream where your teeth fall out, you know what I’m talking about. What is your biggest indulgence?
