cover story

Michelle + Lucas the nash

As children, Michelle and Lucas called Fort McMurray home. They knew of each other through the local sports teams, but didn’t start dating until Lucas had finished high school. Ten years passed between the pair’s first date and their intimate proposal, demonstrating that a lifelong love does not need to be rushed. Flash forward to their proposal day, Michelle and Lucas had waited a long time to finally bring home their new puppy, Leo. Lucas had planned a special proposal for that day, and made sure to beat Michelle to the proposal spot with enough time to sneak the ring onto Leo’s collar. Caught up in the new puppy excitement, Michelle didn’t even notice the ring attached to sweet little Leo’s collar! They decided to plan a surprise wedding for their friends and family to celebrate their love.

URBAN ROMANCE Lucas loved seeing everyone’s faces when Michelle walked into the room for the surprise ceremony, while Michelle loved their first look and the casual feel of their wedding. The wedding party got their photos done prior to guests arriving so everyone was able to have a beer and revel in the beauty of the day. Since the ceremony was a surprise, it allowed for some fun impromptu speeches and of course, some tears! A candy bar capped off the night for all of Michelle and Lucas’ guests.

ADVICE FROM THE BRIDE

“Have fun. Don’t be afraid to go against conventional trends and just have the day that you want. At the end of the day, no one remembers your centrepieces or chair covers - they remember how much fun they had watching you marry the love of your life.”

Calgary welcome to wild rose country

C A LG A R Y 1 0 1 Advice for a perfect trip to Calgary featuring favorite local spots. Like all of Alberta, the weather can change in the blink of an eye. Planning ahead can make all of the difference.

S E A S O N A L W E AT H E R Calgary is a lovely city of just over 1.6 million, located just east of the Canadian Rockies. Often compared to Denver, ‘Cowtown’ gets around 333 sunny days a year, and warm chinook winds that heat the city up to 10°C in the wintertime. Summers are comfortable, while winters are long, dry and cold. The best time to visit Calgary for warm-weather activities is from early July to mid-August. This period of time is ideal for outdoor festivals and activities like hiking, rafting and mountain biking. During the winter, Calgary can often see temperatures hovering around -13°C, meaning it’s essential to dress properly for the season. Due to the city experiencing most of its rain in the month of June, it might be a good idea to book your summer wedding for July or August - no one wants rain on their wedding day! Venture to the area in the fall and you’ll experience a beautiful autumnal foliage display of orange, yellow and gold - absolutely perfect for wedding shoots! Couples love to get photos done amid these vibrant colours, or near the crystal blue waters of Alberta’s picturesque glacier lakes.

W H AT T O P A C K Calgary’s weather is often unpredictable, so it’s important to be prepared for a little bit of every season. Sometimes, a visitor can experience all seasons in one day! Of course it’s important to pack for the season that you’re visiting in, but there are additional one-off items that you might want to think about bringing. If you’re venturing to Calgary in the summer, it’s recommended that you bring a windbreaker, a good pair of sunglasses and a pair of hiking boots, especially if you’re spending any time in the great outdoors! If you’re visiting in the winter, you want to bundle up in case of frigid temperatures - think layers: a base, an insulator, a shell, a toque and a warm pair of snow boots.

ACTIVITIES Calgary is a sunny city with no shortage of fun activities, unique events or trendy restaurants. Spend a bit of time in the city to experience all that it has to offer. Check out Studio Bell, the National Music Centre of Canada, with its alluring architecture, interesting exhibits and wonderful Rosso coffee shop. Just down the street is the Central Library, which gives energy to the East Village. Spend a couple of hours here and grab a London Fog, birthday cake or fruity pebbles flavoured donut from Luke’s Coffee Shop. Once you’re done, rent a bike and scoot around the riverwalk for some sightseeing. Down the way is Inglewood, Calgary’s oldest neighbourbood. Ol’ Beautiful is a brewery in the area with a sophisticated charm. Grab a flight of beer and then move on to Cold Garden for more, with the addition of snacks and puppies! You won’t be disappointed. Want to explore more pockets of Calgary? Head down to 17th Ave, where you can taste one of Made by Marcus’s inventive ice cream flavours, or Kensington where Hexagon board game cafe resides. Mission, the Beltline, 17th Ave and Kensington are all areas that are worth seeing during your time in Cowtown. One of the great upsides of Calgary is its close proximity to the Rocky Mountains. When you’re ready for some outdoor adventures and crisp fresh air, road trip to the mountains! calgary wedding guide 2020 / rockymountainbride.com

Make it official In Alberta, you can get your registration of marriage and marriage license at any registry agent office. You and your partner must both be present at the office with proper identification. Acceptable pieces of identification contain your first and last name, photo and a distinct identification number. Be prepared to answer multiple questions, such as when and where are you getting married, or if you’ve had any previous marriages. The government fee for a marriage license is $40, and you must be married within three months of receiving the license. The province of Alberta does not require you to be a resident, but it does require two witnesses at the ceremony. Your officiant will have the responsibility of sending the signed registration of marriage form to Vital Statistics within 48 hours of the ceremony.

Local Wedding Inspiration

Tasia + Colin s a s k at o o n b e r ry fa r m

Tasia and Colin lived on the same block as teenagers, and they’ve been close friends ever since - as they say, the rest is history. The pair envisioned a fresh and free garden party, with neutral shades and lots of pink and red hues. The Saskatoon Farm, one of Calgary’s most coveted wedding venues, was the perfect locale for the couple’s foliage-filled soiree. Floral designer Hen & Chicks fashioned floral arrangements full of roses, peonies and lush greenery. A lot of DIY went into the wedding, allowing Tasia to express her creative side and make each element her own. Special touches included handwritten calligraphy, glass coke bottles and flavoured sodas for all of the guests.

real wedding

A WHIMSICAL DREAM

One of the couple’s favourite moments was their first dance. Tasia and Colin choreographed a silly dance to an upbeat song, which filled the room with an electric energy. Genevieve Renee, the pair’s photographer, got incredible shots of the bride’s Truvelle gown. The Samantha gown featured a deep v neck, starburst detailing, delicate straps and elegant bow in a gold shimmer fabric with beige mesh. The cascading Sara Gabriel veil, BHLDN earrings, neutral Naturalizer heels and customized denim jacket finished off the bridal ensemble. It was the perfect juxtaposition to the groom’s striking crimson Atelier suit.

Lisa and Cory’s special day at The Lake House was intimate and full of 40 of their closest family and friends. ADVICE FROM THE BRIDE

BRIDGETTE BAR

rehearsal dinner spots

sue moodie photography

Calgary’s buzzworthy Bridgette Bar is a stylish, mid-century bar and restaurant set within a 1922 built-brick warehouse. The vibe is described as ‘rumpus-room chic,’ with exposed brick and large wooden beams. The large space can seat up to 150 people and is a perfect location for a trendy, but relaxed rehearsal dinner! Try the eggplant fries as a snack, and the truffle mushroom rigatoni for dinner - both are incredible.

739 10 Ave SW, Calgary | 587-319-6827 | www.bridgettebar.com

THE NASH The Nash was named one of Calgary’s best restaurants in 2018, and is located in the historic National Hotel in Inglewood. It specializes in gourmet Canadian dishes and has been known for its inventive meals. The space is used for many small, local weddings and is an optimal spot for a rehearsal dinner with its Off Cut Bar. The Off Cut Bar has the feel of a 1920’s speakeasy, with moody lighting and old-style furniture. Guests will be transported to a different era when dining at The Nash.

T E AT R O R I S T O R A N T E Right on Stephen Ave, Teatro is an elegant restaurant that has been the site for many downtown weddings and elopements. Set in a building much like those found in Paris or London, Teatro is the spot for couples that want a refined and central location. Choose this gem as your rehearsal dinner location if you’re looking for a romantic, European feel.

THE DEAN HOUSE The Dean House is a wedding venue located in the historic neighbourhood of Inglewood. This sweet locale is situated right where the bridge connects Inglewood to the downtown core, and has a rich history that extends back to the early 1900s. With a great view of the Bow River and Calgary’s city centre, The Dean House makes a perfect location for a small, intimate wedding at any time of the year. You’ll experience an almost pastoral feel, right in the centre of this bustling Canadian city.

806 9 Ave SE, Calgary | 403-264-0595 | www.deanehouse.com RIVER CAFE This island-based restaurant is located in the heart of Calgary’s downtown, on the city’s popular Prince’s Island Park. It feels as if it has always existed, with its fieldstone fireplace, beautiful wood accents and outdoor terrace. Contributing to its ‘natural’ feel, River Café sources quality regional and local ingredients, which make its menu unique and delicious. Here, there isn’t a bad course on the menu!

25 Prince’s Island, Calgary | 403-261-7670 | www.river-cafe.com THE GUILD Falling in line with The Nash and The Dean House, The Guild is built in the historic Hudson’s Bay building, in downtown Calgary. It’s a nod to the guildhalls of the past, which were used as meeting places for artists and merchants. While The Guild’s menu centres itself around amazing game and fowl recipes, you can also find vegetarian-friendly cuisine like fried mac and cheese, mushroom pizza, summer spaghetti and caprese salad. This location is every mid-century lover’s dream, with brass globe lighting and leather upholstery.

Clarice + Justin east village, calgary

Clarice and Justin started out as coworkers back in 2015, before they became inseparable as best friends and later, a couple. Nicole Field Photography captured the pair in Calgary’s snowy East Village, where they basked in the ‘newly-engaged’ glow. This December will mark Clarice and Justin’s fifth year together, a very exciting milestone.

THE PROPOSAL The sweet couple purchased their first home in 2018 - a crucial detail for their proposal story. Prior to their possession date, Justin asked their realtor if he could have access to the house a few days early. On Mother’s Day, he told Clarice that he had a surprise date planned for later that evening. She spent the day with her mom, and joined Justin on a drive to their new home. Clarice was sent downstairs to find a gift that was in the washing machine, but she found nothing. As she raced back up the stairs, she heard their song, Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One” playing softly in the background. In their master bedroom, Clarice found the best gift she could have ever asked for - her Justin, surrounded by rose petals spelling out “will you marry me?” Swoon!

Transparent ghost chairs, provided by Modern Luxe Rentals, allowed for the focus to remain on the vibrant couple and striking atmosphere. Pretty Sweet YYC designed a delectable cake that was presented on a rugged concrete slab - this unique detail brought elements of the environment into the bakery’s edible design. Q & A with

Grey Lily Photography By: Erin Mitschele

What is your favorite part of the job? Real, candid, emotion filled moments with couples! Whether on their wedding day, elopement or engagement. I just love documenting true love! Do you have a favorite tool of the trade? Currently it would have to be my Nikon d750 with my 35mm Sigma Art 1.4 lens. Where do you come up with your ideas? I follow/look up to other photographers in the industry. I learn from them by watching their posing, lighting etc. I also love to learn new ideas at local work- shops and on-line with the Unraveled Academy. What is one thing you wish you could educate your clients on? I wish I could tell them not to be so nervous. Most people are nervous in front of the camera, that goes without saying. And I’d say I’m pretty good at making people feel comfortable for the most part. However there are those few that never really just let loose and enjoy the session. The more they let go of their nerves, the better the session will be and I wish I could somehow educate them to feel more comfortable and confident!

What trend do you wish would disappear? Haha oh my; burlap and lace! I love lace on it’s own but burlap; no more please! Favorite wedding season? Summer for the warm weather but Fall hands down for the beautiful colors!

Favorite wedding moment? I have so many but I really do love the first time the couple sees one another, whether walking down the aisle or in a “first look.”

What is your biggest indulgence? I love iced coffee. I used to drink Iced Cappuchino’s EVERY day! But now I drink iced coffee at home and it’s much healthier with a lot less sugar!

What is your spirit animal? I’d definitely say a cat. I love dogs too. In fact I love all animals. But there’s just something about the independent personality of a cat that speaks to my introverted heart!
