Being born and raised in Colorado, I found my love for the Rockies in a state that holds so many beautiful places. Through the years, I’ve been lucky enough to travel to many of the other states across the Rockies and have found a certain charm to all of them. Something about the fresh air blowing through the evergreens, or the sand blowing across the Southwest deserts, and the aqua blue lakes in the north, I couldn’t think of a better place to say “I do!” than the Rockies. As I begin to plan my own Rocky Mountain wedding using RMB, I find myself in awe of the talented local vendors in each pocket of the Rocky Mountain region. S E A S O N A L W E AT H E R Surrounded by mountain ranges on all sides, Bozeman and Big Sky shine as an ideal wedding location in the Rockies. From June to August, the weather is warm and sunny, making it the most popular time of the year to tie the knot. If you are looking for that summer wedding vibe and plenty of rays, July might be your best bet with average temps around the low 80s. On the other hand, if you are wanting a cozy and cool ambiance to your day, look to December when the area is often blanketed with snow. For a more moody day, check out March and May. While there is a chance of clouds and rain, storms instantly add a dramatic feel, and they say rain on your wedding day is good luck, right?

W H AT T O P A C K Guiding guests on what to pack for your wedding can take a lot of the guesswork out of their decision. Feel free to add your wedding attire, whether it be cocktail casual or black-tie optional, to your wedding website. Here is also a great place to add little tidbits too, such as packing a shawl for the cooler months, sunglasses if you are having an outdoor summer ceremony, and reminding guests to drink plenty of water to avoid altitude sickness.

ACTIVITIES Head south to Yellowstone National Park, a must see for any visit to the area! You can easily enter the park from West Entrance near West Yellowstone or the North Entrance near Gardiner. Yellowstone National Park is filled with activities from leisurely scenic drives to watching the iconic Old Faithful erupt. If you don’t spot a grizzly in the park, be sure to visit the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, which is home to many bears not fit to survive on their own. Get outside into the fresh Montana air and explore one of the many hiking trails of the area. Just 20 miles south of Bozeman, find the Palisade Falls, an easy, just over a mile out-and-back trail, that features a stunning waterfall. Near Big Sky, Beehive Basin Trail No. 40 is a moderate-rated, 7.1 mile with a gorgeous alpine lake and snowy peak vistas. Forty-five minutes west of Bozeman in the gorgeous Madison River Valley, melt any wedding day jitters away at Norris Hot Springs. A series of natural springs flow at a constant rate with fir planks laid directly over the source to create a one-of-a-kind pool surrounded by nature. The warm water is brimming with minerals to relieve ailments and leave you with a sense of calm and relaxation.

Make it official In the state of Montana, you can get your marriage license at any county clerk’s office. Your partner and you must both be in attendance with proper identification. You will be asked multiple questions while you are there such as when and where are you getting married or if you’ve had any previous marriages. The state of Montana does not require you to be a resident or have a blood test, but it does require two witnesses. It will cost you $53 to be paid at issuance of the license, and the license must be returned within 180 days.

Christen + Kalvin sage lodge

Christen and Kalvin were high school sweethearts, but chose to go their separate ways after graduation. Ten years later after both had taken very different life paths, Kalvin sent Christen a three-part love letter expressing his feelings for her. Two and a half years later, Kalvin, Christen and her family took a ski trip to Red Mountain Lodge. The mountain held a special place in Christen’s heart as her brother Jake, who was a quadaplegic, was able to ski the mountain and even had a personal chair-ski with his name on it before he passed away in 2006. Kalvin discovered that the chair-ski was still in use and arranged to have it at the top of Jake’s favorite run at the end of the day. The family gathered around the ski-chair for a special moment to reflect on their memories with Jake. Right as the photos were wrapping up, Kalvin clicked out of his skis, dropped to one knee and asked Christen to marry him! Christen and Kalvin planned a snowy wedding for January 4th.

It cleared up right as we were pronounced husband and wife.”

Melissa and Darek met through Tinder, but Melissa was hesitant to say yes to a date. After much persisting, Melissa agreed to a lunch date and arrived in a sweatshirt and messy bun. When she spotted Darek, she immediately regretted her decision to be so casual, but in the end it worked in her favor! For their second date, Melissa and Darek went fence fixing. Trying to impress Darek, Melissa loaded a big spool of barbed wire into the back of the truck, but accidentally cut herself in the process. Not wanting to admit she was bleeding, Melissa tried her best to hide the wound until there was no choice to tell Darek. He sweetly doctored up her arm, and the two have been together ever since!

Both being avid outdoorsy people, one day Melissa and Darek went out for a hunt. After a successful hunt for Melissa, Darek and her were back in their kitchen as Melissa flipped through pictures of the day. Darek slyly placed something in front of Melissa, and when she peered up she was met with the most perfect ring. Darek got down on one knee and asked her to be his wife!

Tiana and John met in Park City, Utah. She was living in the most beautiful winter wonderland and John was visiting for the weekend. It was an instant connection when they met at No Name Saloon. John popped the question while they were drinking coffee in bed, one morning in Costa Rica. They later celebrated at sunset with some champagne and the gorgeous Costa Rican sky.

Keeley McKay By: Erin Mitschele What is your favorite part of the job? The relationships: not just the ones I am fortunate enough to form with couples and families, but I love witnessing the relationships between the bride and groom and their friends and families.

Do you have a favorite tool of the trade? Yes! My trusty Nikon F100. While I shoot a Mamiya 645AF medium format camera during weddings, the F100 35mm is a workhorse and just feels so intuitive to me.

Where do you come up with your ideas? My not-so-secret secret is that I am not an inherently creative person, which means I look to couples and families for inspiration. I want to see how they interact with each other: when they walk, do they hold hands? Throw an arm around the other’s waist? How do they interact with the environment around them? It’s their own natural tendencies that give me the creative inspiration for what I do.

What is one thing you wish you could educate your clients on? I’m going to take some flack for this but, it’s something I feel strongly about: your photos are about your day - your day isn’t about your photos. It’s easy to get caught up in all the pretty details and wanting perfect photos, ready for publication, but the heart of the day is the start of your marriage and life together. You don’t need 250 people there if you don’t want that many. You don’t need all the details if you don’t care about them. But stripping your wedding down to the things you do care about gives you the opportunity to invest more in the things you care about and spend time truly enjoying the company of the ones with whom you choose to celebrate.

Which job would you like to try for a day? I would love to try marine biology for a day, specifically with regards to sharks and my ultimate bucket list item is to free dive with Great White Sharks.

What is your Astrology sign? I’m a Sagittarius. In some ways, I think it is fitting (curious and optimistic), but not wholly. Some say Sagittarius (Sagittarii?) are extroverts, but I am definitely an introvert and I don’t love change for the most part.

What do you do in the “off” season? I spend my “off” season practicing law (I’m a licensed attorney and love this work as well). My legal work focuses on estate and business succession planning, small business advisory, and land access litigation. I also use my “off” season to invest in continuing education, working on skill sets, and shooting for fun while adventuring with my husband and our American Bulldog Gus.
