Democratic members also denied visit to controversial Broadview ICE facility

Immigration and Customs Enforcement leaders in Chicago canceled a meeting scheduled for Friday with members of Illinois’ congressional delegation.
Illinois’ Democratic members of Congress had asked for a meeting with ICE Chicago Field Office Director Russell Hott. They were seeking to learn more about ICE and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s immigration enforcement operations known as Operation Midway Blitz in the Chicago area.
The congressional delegation first asked ICE for an oversight visit to the agency’s Broadview facility that houses many people detained in the Chicago area. ICE declined that request, according to a statement from the delegation, but instead agreed to hold a separate meeting with the members of Congress on Friday. Friday’s meeting was rescheduled to an unspecified day in October, the
delegation said.
An ICE spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
ICE has previously denied Illinois’ members of Congress access to the Broadview facility. ICE established a new policy requiring members of Congress to provide seven days’ notice before visiting a facility after some members unsuccessfully tried to visit the facility in June.
Violet skirmishes once again broke out between protesters and Homeland Security agents at the Broadview facility in Chicago’s near west suburbs Friday. Agents shot pepper balls and tear gas at protesters, including many who tried to block DHS vehicles from entering or exiting the facility.
Earlier this month, federal agents briefly detained two U.S. citizens during a raid of an Elgin home while another agent shot and killed a man in Franklin Park. Body camera footage released this week cast doubt on DHS’ narrative about the shooting.
State leaders say they still have many unanswered questions about the board-
ed-up Broadview facility.
“Oversight of this facility is desperately needed as legal service providers and our constituents have raised concerns about the poor conditions at Broadview,” the delegation said in a statement. “These reports allege unsanitary bathroom facilities; spreading illness; continued overcrowding; detainees sleeping on the floor or in chairs; a lack of access to food, water or hygiene products; restricted communications to family members and attorneys; and an inability to access medication.”
With Friday’s meeting canceled, the delegation sent a letter to Hott, the field office director, with a list of questions about ICE’s Chicago-area operations. They’d sent a similar one to DHS Secretary Kristi Noem on Tuesday. Friday’s letter also included several questions about the Broadview facility, including how detainees get medical services and access attorneys.
The letter also seeks answers about where else ICE is detaining people arrested in the Chicago area. The delegation wrote constituents have reported people being detained in Lombard, hotels near O’Hare and prisons in Indiana.

Gov. JB Pritzker released his own questions through the media for a second straight week, seeking broad information about DHS’ plans for Operation Midway Blitz.
“Illinois taxpayers deserve to know why the federal government is spending their hard-earned money to promulgate a state-sponsored fear campaign against our people instead of supporting public safety efforts,” Pritzker said in a statement.
Customs and Border Protection, another DHS agency that’s part of immigration work in the Chicago area, began piloting boats down the Chicago River. The CBP boats passed through downtown with several armed agents aboard, including CBP Chief Gregory Bovino, the Chicago Tribune reported.

From Kortman Gallery
Rockford artist Michelle Dorr’s art works featuring portraits show not only her love for animals, but also her passion for bold, bright colors. Her exhibition “Michelle’s Groove: In Loving Color” which opens Friday & Saturday, October 3rd & 4th in the Kortman Gallery, offers a visually charged, colorful group of new paintings.
Not only her art is colorful, but she is surrounded by color in her home…her painting goes beyond her canvases to an environment she has created both inside and outside the house in her patio and backyard.
Dorr has been painting pet portraits for over 20 years. Her use of color and atten-
tion to detail, especially the subjects’ eyes, creates fun and lively portraits of pets, farm animals, wildlife, humans and other creatures.
“My inspiration comes from the connection humans have to animals and the important roles they play in our lives,” says Dorr. “The title of my show, “Michelle’s Groove: In Loving Color” comes from a playlist of 346 songs created on Spotify of music that I like and inspires me while I’m painting. I also want to emphasize ‘loving color’ to express not only my passion for animals, but also for bright, bold colors…so I thought it was the perfect name.”
Dorr grew up in a family of artists. Her sister, Sherrie Dorr, is also an accom-
plished artist, as was her father.
“I grew up in a family of artists and crafters and creativity filled my childhood,” said Dorr. “My father was a commercial artist by trade, but his true passion was pastel portraits and landscapes. His studio was at home and I spent many hours watching him create and learning his techniques to bring the subject alive, especially the eyes.”
“Michelle’s portraits seem to capture the spirit of an animal because of her attention to the eyes,” said Doc Slafkosky, Kortman Gallery director. “The old adage that the eyes are the windows to the soul, is certainly characterized in her engaging paintings. The charm of her works is that they create a personal relationship
between the image and the viewer.”
“Michelle’s Groove: In Loving Color,” featuring new works by Michelle Dorr will open with an artist’s receptions on Friday, October 3rd from 5 to 9pm, and Saturday, October 4th, from 4 to 8pm upstairs in the Kortman Gallery, 107 North Main Street in Downtown Rockford. Her openings dates are part of the Fall ArtScene weekend. Her exhibit will run through November 15th.
J.R. Kortman Center for Design and Kortman Gallery are open Tuesday through Friday, 11am to 6pm and Saturdays, 11am to 5pm. The opening event and gallery are free and open to the public. For more information visit www. jrkortman.com or phone 815-968-0123.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — The United Nations reimposed sanctions on Iran early Sunday over its nuclear program, further squeezing the Islamic Republic as its people increasingly find themselves priced out of the food they need to survive and worried about their futures.
The sanctions will again freeze Iranian assets abroad, halt arms deals with Tehran, and penalize any development of Iran’s ballistic missile program, among other measures. It came via a mechanism known as “snapback,” included in Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers, and comes as Iran’s economy already is reeling.
Iran’s rial currency sits at a record low, increasing pressure on food prices and making daily life that much more challenging. That includes meat, rice and other staples of the Iranian dinner table.
Meanwhile, people worry about a new round of fighting between Iran and Israel — as well as potentially the United States — as missile sites struck during the 12-day war in June now appear to be being rebuilt.
Activists fear a rising wave of repression within the Islamic Republic, which already has reportedly executed more people this year than over the past three decades.
Sina, the father of a 12-year-old boy who spoke on condition that only his first name be used for fear of repercussions, said the country has never faced such a challenging time, even during the deprivations of the 1980s Iran-Iraq war and the decades of sanctions that came later.
“For as long as I can remember, we’ve been struggling with economic hardship, and every year it’s worse than the last,” Sina told The Associated Press. “For my generation, it’s always either too late or too early — our dreams are slipping away.”
Snapback was designed to be vetoproof at the U.N. Security Council, meaning China and Russia could not stop it alone, as they have other proposed actions against Tehran in the past. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov called them a “trap” for Iran on Saturday.
France, Germany and the United Kingdom triggered snapback over Iran
30 days ago for its further restricting monitoring of its nuclear program and the deadlock over its negotiations with the U.S.
Iran further withdrew from the International Atomic Energy Agency monitoring after Israel’s war with the country in June, which also saw the U.S. strike nuclear sites in the Islamic Republic. Meanwhile, the country still maintains a stockpile of uranium enriched up to 60% purity — a short, technical step away from weapons-grade levels of 90% — that is largely enough to make several atomic bombs, should Tehran choose to rush toward weaponization.
Iran has long insisted its nuclear program is peaceful, though the West and IAEA say Tehran had an organized weapons program up until 2003.
The three European nations on Sunday said they “continuously made every effort to avoid triggering snapback.” But Iran “has not authorized IAEA inspectors to regain access to Iran’s nuclear sites, nor has it produced and transmitted to the IAEA a report accounting for its stockpile of high-enriched uranium.”
Tehran has further argued that the three European nations shouldn’t be allowed to implement snapback, pointing in part to America’s unilateral withdrawal from the accord in 2018, during the first term of President Donald Trump’s administration.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio praised the three European nations for “an act of decisive global leadership” for imposing the sanctions on Iran and said “diplomacy is still an option.”
“For that to happen, Iran must accept direct talks,” Rubio said.
However, it remains unclear how Tehran will respond Sunday.
“The Trump administration appears to think it has a stronger hand post-strikes, and it can wait for Iran to come back to the table,” said Kelsey Davenport, a nuclear expert at the Washington-based Arms Control Association. “Given the knowledge Iran has, given the materials that remain in Iran, that’s a very dangerous assumption.”
Risks also remain for Iran as well, she added: “In the short term, kicking out the IAEA increases the risk of miscalculation. The U.S. or Israel could use the lack of inspections as a pretext for further strikes.”
The aftermath of the June war drove up food prices in Iran, putting already expensive meat out of reach for poorer families.
Iran’s government put overall annual inflation at 34.5% in June, and its Statistical Center reported that the cost of essential food items rose over 50% over the same period. But even that doesn’t reflect what people see at shops. Pinto beans tripled in price in a year, while butter nearly doubled. Rice, a staple, rose more than 80% on average, hitting 100% for premium varieties. Whole chicken is up 26%, while beer and lamb are up 9%.
“Every day I see new higher prices for cheese, milk and butter,” said Sima Taghavi, a mother of two, at a Tehran grocery. “I cannot omit them like fruits and meat from my grocery list because my kids are too young to be deprived.”
The pressure over food and fears about the war resuming have seen more patients heading to psychologists since June, local media in Iran have reported.
“The psychological pressure from the 12-day war on the one hand, and runaway inflation and price hikes on the other, has left society exhausted and unmotivated,” Dr. Sima Ferdowsi, a clinical psychologist and professor at Shahid Beheshti University, told the Hamshahri newspaper in an interview published in July.
Iran has faced multiple nationwide protests in recent years, fueled by anger over the economy, demands for women’s rights and calls for the country’s theocracy to change.
In response to those protests and the June war, Iran has been putting prisoners to death at a pace unseen since 1988, when it executed thousands at the end of the Iran-Iraq war. The Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights and the Washington-based Abdorrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights in Iran put the number of people executed in 2025 at over 1,000, noting the number could be higher as Iran does not report on each execution.
Vahdat reported from Tehran, Iran. Associated Press writer Nasser Karimi in Tehran contributed to this report.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia unleashed a barrage of drones and missiles on Ukraine overnight into Sunday, killing at least four people, with Kyiv suffering the heaviest assault. It was the first major bombardment since an air attack on Ukraine’s capital left at least 21 people dead last month.
Separately, U.S. Vice President JD Vance said the U.S. was considering selling Ukraine Tomahawk cruise missiles.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Administration, confirmed Sunday’s casualties via Telegram and said that 10 others were wounded in the attack, which targeted civilian areas across the city. A 12-year-old girl was among the dead. Thick black smoke could be seen rising from a blast near the city center.
“The Russians have restarted the child death counter,” Tkachenko wrote on Telegram.
Russia fired a total of 595 exploding drones and decoys and 48 missiles, Ukraine’s air force said Sunday. Of those, air defenses shot down or jammed 566 drones and 45 missiles.
Besides Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the bombardment targeted the regions of Zaporizhzhia, Khmelnytskyi, Sumy, Mykolaiv, Chernihiv, and Odesa. Zelenskyy wrote on X that at least 40 people were wounded across the country. Later, Ukraine’s Interior Ministry stated the number of the wounded rose to 70, with more than 100 civilian objects damaged.
Zaporizhzhia’s regional head, Ivan Fedorov, said that three children were among the 27 wounded in the region, adding that more than two dozen buildings were damaged in the capital, which that bears the same name.
“This vile attack came virtually (at) the close of U.N. General Assembly week, and this is exactly how Russia declares its true position. Moscow wants to keep fighting and killing, and it deserves the toughest pressure from the world,” Zelenskyy wrote.
Speaking to Fox News in an interview taped Friday, Vance said the U.S. admin-
istration was reviewing a request by the Ukrainian president for Tomahawk cruise missiles. Tomahawks have a range of around 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers), which would put Moscow within the range of Ukraine’s forces.
“It’s something that the president is going to make the final determination on. I know that we’re reviewing that request. We’re also reviewing a number of other requests,” Vance said.
The strikes that began overnight and continued after dawn on Sunday also targeted residential buildings, civilian infrastructure, a medical facility and a kindergarten, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, who also said that damage was reported at more than 20 locations across the capital.
At Kyiv’s central train station, passengers arrived to the crackle of anti-aircraft gunfire and the low buzz of attack drones. Mostly women, they waited quietly in a platform underpass until the air raid alert ended. Parents checked the news on their phones while children played online games.
“The sky has turned black again,” said one woman at the station, who gave only her first name, Erika. “It’s happening a lot.”
Ilona Kovalenko, a 38-year-old resident of a five-story building struck in Kyiv’s Solomianskyi district, told The Associated Press that she woke up because of the explosion, which shattered windows.
“A neighbor kept knocking on our door. She was completely covered in blood and shouting, ‘help, save my daughter,’” said Kovalenko, who fled the building with her grandmother after the strike.
Oleksandra, the neighbor’s daughter, was the 12-year-old killed in the attack.
“Sadly, she died on the spot,” Kovalenko said. “We are in shock, to be honest.”
Another multistory residential building was heavily damaged by the attack. Emergency services personnel used power saws to clear the debris. Piles of glass littered nearby sidewalks as building residents, some looking shaken, sat on benches.
“There are no warehouses or plants here. We were sure that nothing would happen, but it hit us here,” Volodymyr, a retired Kyiv resident who only gave his
first name, told the AP at the site of a missile strike.
The Kremlin has repeatedly claimed that Russia’s military only strikes military targets.
Russian officials didn’t immediately comment on the latest attacks.
For some Kyiv residents, this wasn’t the first time they had come under Russian attack. Mark Sergeev, a pastor who had already fled Russia-occupied Melitopol, found himself under attack again in Kyiv. He was sleeping on the second floor with his wife when the blast struck, with his children on the floor above.
“There was a blast, and a wardrobe fell on me and I was covered with glass. My wife was shouting: ‘Mark, where are the kids?’ I felt like this was like a death sentence,” Sergeev said. He called out to his older son Toper, who responded that he was alive, before pulling his younger child from the debris.
The pastor, who previously testified before U.S. Congress about Christian persecution in Russian-occupied territories, said that the attack brought back painful memories. “I am a pastor from Melitopol. We had a large Protestant church and a house that I built with my own hands, and the Russian FSB took it away and nationalized it,” he said, describing how Russian forces had forced his family to lie on the ground at gunpoint in 2022.
“And so, we lost our second home again,” Sergeev said.
The assault also triggered military responses in neighboring Poland, where fighter jets were deployed early Sunday as Russia struck targets in western Ukraine, according to the Polish armed forces. Polish military officials characterized these defensive measures as “preventive.” International concerns have mounted recently that the fighting could spread beyond Ukraine’s borders as European countries rebuked Russia for what they said were provocations. The incidents have included Russian drones landing on Polish soil and Russian fighter aircraft entering Estonian airspace.
Russia denied that its planes entered Estonian airspace and said that none of its drones targeted Poland.
The latest bombardment follows Zelenskyy’s announcement Saturday of what he called a “mega deal” for weapons purchases from the United States. The $90 billion package includes both the major arms agreement and a separate “drone deal” for Ukrainian-made drones that the U.S. will purchase directly.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry said that its air defenses shot down 41 Ukrainian drones overnight into Sunday.

As the growing season starts to end in October with a forthcoming first frost and you are planning fall garden transitions, consider starting your first compost pile. With dead vegetable plants and leaves from your trees, you’ll soon have the perfect combination of materials needed to create this valuable soil amendment for next year’s backyard garden.
Understanding why compost matters helps backyard growers appreciate this natural soil conditioner. Compost nourishes beneficial microorganisms that drive nutrient cycling in your garden beds. By increasing soil organic matter, it transforms your growing medium into a more productive foundation for vege-
tables and flowers. Compacted backyard soils often improve dramatically with regular compost applications over time. However, recognize compost’s limitations as a fertilizer. With typical N-P-K values around 0.25-0.25-0.25, it shouldn’t necessarily replace your seasonal fertilizers. Your tomatoes and peppers still need higher-concentration feeds like 10-10-10 during active growth, while compost works quietly improving soil structure and biology.
Getting the recipe right ensures successful composting. Start with proper ratios of 2 parts “green” nitrogen-rich materials to 1 part “brown” carbon sources. Green ingredients include vegetable plant debris, kitchen scraps, and grass clippings from nontreated lawns. Avoid
heavily diseased plant material, though properly managed compost should reach temperatures that eliminate most pathogens. Kitchen contributions should include only vegetable and fruit scraps while avoiding dairy, fats, and oils that resist decomposition and attract pests. Brown materials come from fallen leaves, small twigs, and woody debris. Chop or shred these carbon sources to break down effectively and create even layers. October’s leaf raking will provide abundant brown material to balance your green vegetable waste.
Choosing your composting method depends on your backyard setup and commitment level. Simple pile systems work well in designated garden areas, allowing gradual additions as materials
accumulate. Enclosed bins offer ventilation, easy turning, and tidy appearance while positioning near water sources simplifies moisture management. Threebin systems suit ambitious gardeners handling large volumes or incorporating manures, allowing continuous production with staggered completion times.
Starting your compost system now sets the stage for rich, dark humus that will transform your soil by next planting season. As you rake those autumn leaves and clear spent garden plants, remember that today’s yard waste becomes tomorrow’s garden gold.

The Trump administration has moved quickly to undue the efforts to address climate change and implement the political agenda laid out in the Project 2025 document. Government agencies are undoing federal regulations and are challenging the EPA scientific finding supporting federal regulations of heat trapping greenhouse gases.
As federal energy policy moves away from renewable energy and government regulations and toward fossil fuels and nuclear energy, the Sun Day Campaign reports on the increase in renewable energy installations occurring before federal support is curtailed. In the first seven months of this year solar electric generation has been the fastest growing major source of U.S. electricity. Wind and solar provide nearly 20% of total U. S. electrical generation. They provide a
larger share than that provide by coal and nuclear. The amount of electricity provided by a mix of solar, wind, hydropower. biomass and geothermal provides nearly 27% of total electrical generation.
The current administration distain toward renewable energy was expressed on the global level. In a recent speech to the UN general assembly President Trump called climate change the “greatest con job ever perpetuated on the world”. He criticized the EU for reducing its carbon footprint claiming it has taken its toll on their economy. He warned that countries that invested heavily in renewable energy will have their economies suffer.
Trump criticized the UK decision to end new drilling for oil in the North Sea as a tremendous amount of oil remains to be found there. In response to his comments Carbon Brief cited a number of reports that his claims were at odds with the existing scientific consensus.
Prior to Trump’s speech the Independent
had an article by Emily Beament addressing the approaching UK selection of long duration battery storage projects for government funding. The projects range from battery technologies, compressed air storage, and pumped hydro storage. They will store excess electricity from renewable energy facilities for later consumption when renewable production is not available. The projects are described as a means of ending the country’s costly reliance on volatile natural gas prices.
In the U.S. utility scale battery storage systems are of interest to Wall Street according to Energy Central. Storage systems capture low cost excessive electrons and store them for a profit when the price of electricity increases. Such strategies are already exist in Vermont, Texas and California using some of the low cost excess production from renewable energy sources.
Canary Media carried a recent article by Kari Lydersen addressing potential in
Illinois of providing state incentives for battery systems which could turn investments in solar systems serving homes and businesses into virtual power plants. The systems reduce the likelihood of power outages and the need for additional costly production from peaker plants.
The proposed legislation in Illinois known as HB 4120 would offer a rebate for customers buying a battery. The customer would have to agree to allow their utility to draw power from their battery system for several hours a day during summer months when electrical demand surges. The legislation would also provide incentives for the construction of large scale storage facilities within the state.
As we mentioned in earlier articles it is also possible for owners of some electric vehicles to use the battery power to provide electricity to use in their homes when grid power is lost or prices spike.
