State has recently completed major renovations at some state parks
By Ben Szalinski Capitol News Illinois

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois state parks saw more visitors in 2024 than any point in the past 15 years, according to new data from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.
Illinois’ 290 state parks and 56 historic sites recorded more than 41 million visitors last year, which was the most in 15 years, following several significant capital projects to upgrade and improve many of the parks.
Interest in state parks has been growing since the pandemic, IDNR Director Natalie Phelps Finnie said in an interview.
“During COVID, people were stir crazy, shut in, and they once again realized how important nature is to all of us,” Phelps Finnie said.
An aggressive advertising campaign by the state has also helped, she said. The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity launched the state’s “Middle of Everything” marketing campaign in 2022, which promotes tourism at the state’s top recreation and cultural
attractions in TV commercials, billboards and online advertising.
Starved Rock State Park in LaSalle County topped the list in 2024 with 2.4 million visitors coming to explore the canyons and waterfalls nestled in gorges along the Illinois River in north-central Illinois.
The second-most visited park last year was Illinois Beach State Park, near Zion, with 2 million visitors. IDNR completed a major $73 million project last year to preserve the park from erosion.
“It’s always been a high number of visitors, but certainly the uptick we’ve seen since the beach was restored and since the resort is being invested in once again and remodeled,” Phelps Finnie said.
Beach State Park holds Illinois’ only undeveloped stretch of Lake Michigan shoreline, but it’s subject to the ferocious waves of the lake. The conditions have sometimes eroded up to 100 feet of shoreline a year in parts of the park.
To preserve the park’s shoreline, IDNR’s project included building 22 breakwater structures in the lake to decrease the power of the waves hitting the shore. Several of the structures are entirely submerged while others that poke out the surface of the lake are designed to provide nesting for migratory birds.
The project also included extending the public beach further into Lake Michigan. Erosion had diminished the beach to come within feet of the parking lot and hotel at the park.
The state also announced earlier this year it will put $60 million toward deferred maintenance projects. More than half of that will go to Starved Rock for trail improvements, facility renovations and building a new wastewater system.
The department is also working on adding electric vehicle chargers at state parks and renovating the Old State Capitol in Springfield.
This summer, IDNR plans to restore and upgrade the Crenshaw House in Gallatin County to include a visitor center at a location on the reverse underground railroad, where slaves were held. According to IDNR, John Crenshaw used slaves at his southern Illinois home where he manufactured salt. Crenshaw is also believed to have kidnapped freed or escaped slaves to sell them back to slavery in the South.
“We’re excited that the investment is being made and these parks are getting the attention they deserve,” Phelps Finnie said.
Lincoln’s New Salem Historic Site in Peterburg, where the 16th president lived in his 20s, was the state’s most visited historic site last year with 360,000 visitors. The site is in line for funding to repair aging buildings.
IDNR announced in March it will invest $8 million to repair up to 23 replica log buildings at the site that depict how the village looked when Lincoln lived there in the 1830s.
“You have things fall into disrepair and then it dominoes,” Phelps Finnie said.
“It builds. So what was once maybe $100 million or so is now a little over $1 billion worth of deferred maintenance” across IDNR’s properties.

Mideast Wars
By Sam Mednick Associated Press
TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — The Gaza Strip will likely fall into famine if Israel doesn’t lift its blockade and stop its military campaign, food security experts said in a stark warning on Monday.
Nearly half a million Palestinians are facing possible starvation, living in “catastrophic” levels of hunger, and 1 million others can barely get enough food, according to findings by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, a leading international authority on the severity of hunger crises.
The group said “there is a high risk” of outright famine if circumstances don’t change.
Israel has banned all food, shelter, medicine and any other goods from entering the Palestinian territory for the past 10 weeks, even as it carries out waves of airstrikes and ground operations. Gaza’s population of around 2.3 million people relies almost entirely on outside aid to survive, because Israel’s 19-month-old military campaign has wiped away most capacity to produce food inside the territory.
Food supplies are emptying out dramatically. Communal kitchens handing out cooked meals are virtually the only remaining source of food for most people in Gaza now, but they too are rapidly shutting down for lack of stocks.
Thousands of Palestinians crowd daily outside the public kitchens, pushing and jostling with their pots to receive lentils or pasta.
“We end up waiting in line for four, five hours, in the sun. It is exhausting,” said Riham Sheikh el-Eid, waiting at a kitchen in the southern city of Khan Younis on Sunday. “At the end, we walk away with nothing. It is not enough for everybody.”
The lack of a famine declaration doesn’t mean people aren’t already starving, and a declaration shouldn’t be a precondition for ending the suffering, said Chris Newton, an analyst for the International Crisis Group focusing on starvation as a weapon of war.
“The Israeli government is starving Gaza as part of its attempt to destroy Hamas and transform the strip,” he said.
Israel demands a new aid system
The office of Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, did not respond to a request for comment. The army has said that enough assistance entered Gaza during a two-month ceasefire that Israel shattered in mid-March when it relaunched its military campaign.
Israel says the blockade aims to pressure Hamas to release the hostages it still holds. It says it won’t let aid back in until a new system giving it control over distribution is in place, accusing Hamas of siphoning off supplies. The United States says it is working up a new mechanism that will start deliveries soon, but it has given no timeframe.
The United Nations has so far refused to participate. It denies substantial diversion of aid is taking place and says the new system is unnecessary, will not meet the massive needs of Palestinians and will allow aid to be used as a weapon for political and military goals.
Monday’s report said that any slight gains made during the ceasefire have been reversed. Nearly the entire population of Gaza now faces high levels of hunger, it said, driven by conflict, the collapse of infrastructure, destruction of agriculture, and blockades of aid.
Mahmoud Alsaqqa, food security and livelihoods coordinator for Oxfam, called on governments to press Israel to allow “unimpeded humanitarian access.”
“Silence in the face of this manmade starvation is complicity,” he said.
Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas after the group’s Oct. 7, 2023, surprise attack on Israel, in which militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 251 hostage, most of whom have been released in ceasefire agreements or other deals.
Israel’s offensive has killed over 52,000 Palestinians, more than half of them women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, whose count does not distinguish between civilians or combatants.
The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification, first set up in 2004 during the famine in Somalia, groups more than a dozen U.N. agencies, aid groups, governments and other bodies.
It has only declared famine a few times
— in Somalia in 2011, and South Sudan in 2017 and 2020, and last year in parts of Sudan’s western Darfur region. Tens of thousands are believed to have died in Somalia and South Sudan.
It rates an area as in famine when at least two of three things occur: 20% of households have an extreme lack of food, or are essentially starving; at least 30% of children six months to five years suffer from acute malnutrition or wasting, meaning they’re too thin for their height; and at least two people or four children under five per every 10,000 are dying daily due to starvation or the interaction of malnutrition and disease.
The assessment on Monday found that the first threshold was met in Gaza, saying 477,000 people — or 22% of the population — are classified as in “catastrophic” hunger, the highest level, for the period from May 11 to the end of September.
It said more than 1 million people are at “emergency” levels of hunger, the second highest level, meaning they have “very high gaps” in food and high acute malnutrition.
The other thresholds were not met. The data was gathered in April and up to May 6. Food security experts say it takes time for people to start dying from starvation.
The report said if the blockade and military campaign continues, “the vast majority” in Gaza will not have access to food or water, civil unrest will worsen,
health services will “fully collapse,” disease will spread, and levels of malnutrition and death will cross the thresholds into famine.
It had also warned of “imminent” famine in northern Gaza in March 2024, but the following month, Israel allowed an influx of aid under U.S. pressure after an Israeli strike killed seven aid workers.
Aid groups now say the situation is the most dire of the entire war. The U.N. humanitarian office, known as OCHA, said Friday that the number of children seeking treatment at clinics for malnutrition has doubled since February, even as supplies to treat them are quickly running out.
Aid groups have shut down food distribution for lack of stocks. Many foods have disappeared from the markets and what’s left has spiraled in price and is unaffordable to most. Farmland is mostly destroyed or inaccessible. Water distribution is grinding to a halt, largely because of lack of fuel.
Beth Bechdol, deputy director of the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization, said more than 75% of Gaza’s farmland had been damaged or destroyed, and two-thirds of the wells used for irrigation were no longer operating.
The destruction, she said, is “driving these large numbers of people closer towards the famine numbers that we think are possible.”

Tomatoes are one of the most beloved garden crops for Northern Illinois homeowners, but growing them successfully requires planning, timing, and proper care. From choosing the right type of plant to knowing when to get them in the ground, following a few simple guidelines can lead to a successful season. With transplants at the home and garden centers and the 10 day weather outlook very positive, let’s talk about growing this plant.
One of the biggest mistakes gardeners make is planting tomatoes too early. While it’s tempting to take advantage of the first warm days of spring, Northern
Illinois is prone to late frosts—often well into May. Tomatoes are extremely sensitive to cold, and frost can kill young plants overnight. The safest time to plant is after the last average frost date, typically around May 15. To be extra cautious, wait until nighttime temperatures consistently stay above 50°F. So while you may feel that you are behind in planting tomatoes, in fact, you are right on time with planting them starting this week. One of the main decisions you need to make is choosing between hybrid and heirloom (open-pollinated) tomatoes. Hybrids are bred for traits like disease resistance, uniform fruit, and high yield. Heirloom varieties, passed down through
generations, are known for their rich, complex flavors and unique shapes and colors. Furthermore, hybrids tend to be better for food preservation while heirlooms have more water in them and are better for fresh eating. I commonly grow both hybrids and heirlooms in my garden. Choose tomato transplants that are dark green, sturdy, and about 6–10 inches tall. Avoid plants with yellowing leaves, leggy stems, or flowers already forming. If you’re growing from seed, be sure to harden off seedlings—gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions over 7–10 days—before transplanting. Proper spacing is crucial. Most tomatoes need 24–36 inches between plants
and 3–5 feet between rows to allow for good air circulation. This reduces disease risk and makes harvesting easier. Crowding can lead to problems like leaf blight and poor fruit development. For heirlooms, look towards a 36 inch planting to give these big plants space to spread out. Your tomatoes will also need support. Use cages, stakes, or trellising systems to keep plants off the ground. This encourages airflow, prevents rot, creates better quality tomatoes, and makes picking easier. Cages are a better choice for smaller, hybrid tomatoes though the cages can still be flimsy. Grant is the Local Food and Smalls Farms Educator of the University of Illinois Extension.

Our last article pointed out the low cost of cooling data processing equipment in cold climates like Iceland and Greenland and the interest on the part of the Trump administration in acquiring Greenland. The appeal low cost cooling could be part of the reason why billionaires from the computer world contributed more money to the Trump campaign than did the oil companies.
Not all the world’s data centers will be located in cold climates and need to cool the computers will require massive amounts of energy in addition to the electricity needed to run the computers continuously 24 hours per day and seven days per week. Meeting the rising energy demand has stimulated interest in returning to nuclear power. Some of the nuclear revival has been directed at refurbishing and returning retired nuclear plants back into service.
The development and implementation of smaller nuclear power plants are expected to play an important role in providing electricity for the data centers. An advocate of the smaller nuclear power plants believes they can be put into service in almost any location. Small nuclear reactors such as molten salt reactors being developed are described as affordable, safe, and clean energy sources and ready to provide electricity for growing need for more electricity for IA, electric vehicles and the use of heat pumps. A long time critic of nuclear power believes the nuclear revival does not eliminate the risks associated nuclear power and instead intensifies them. Oil, natural gas and mineral interests will benefit from the opening up of Federally owned lands to their developments. They are already benefitting from the use of artificial intelligence in their operations. Oil and gas firms are increasing their efficiency by using AI to locate the most promising sites for new
wells and reducing the waste associated with drillings that fail to secure more oil or gas.
Another gain in efficiency comes from no longer sending personnel out in a jeep to locate well pumps that are not working. The monitoring can now be done by satellite monitors surveying an active oil or gas producing field and sending the information to a distant computer center. The operator of the monitoring center can then send personnel directly to the failed pump and replace it.
The gains in efficiency from using AI actually increase the amount of oil or gas captured from a well while lowering the cost of capturing the additional energy. As a greater percent of the oil or gas is captured the profit from the well is increased but the life of the well itself is shortened. As more oil or gas is used, the quicker the wells useful life is depleted.
By ignoring climate change, depletion, pollution of water and air, the loss of recreational opportunities and biodi-
versity, environmental deterioration is imposed on society and future generations. It is not a sustainable process as eventually the wells dry up and future generations bear the costs. New technologies are always presented as major improvements in society but often leave other social and environmental problems in their wake
Some of the problems associated with new technologies often require government regulations to control them. An earlier existence of the government agency to assess the likely impacts of proposed innovations was intended to assess the potential benefits and risks of new technologies before they were widely implemented. The Office of Technological Assessment was eliminated years ago as interfering with the marketplace. Given all the problems stemming from earlier technological innovations the need for a more thorough assessment of today’s innovations before they are widely implemented seems appropriate.
