Chicago Cubs to host 2027 MLB All-Star Game at Wrigley Field, pending a lockout

State and city pitching in to upgrade security ahead of the big game

CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs will host their fourth Major League Baseball All-Star Game in 2027.

The announcement, made Friday by MLB and Cubs officials, was attended by a cadre of elected officials, including Chicago’s mayor and several Chicago alderpeople, Gov. JB Pritzker, several state lawmakers and MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred.

The 2027 game would give Wrigley Field the record for most games hosted by an active ballpark. Wrigley Field previously hosted the All-Star Game in 1947, 1962 and 1990.

Illinois Senate President Don Harmon, a “congenital Sox fan who grew up watching the Cubs on television,” said the news is “terrific.”

“I think any opportunity we have to showcase the city of Chicago and the state of Illinois to a national or international audience — whether its NASCAR or the President’s Cup or the 2027 All-Star Game — is good for all of us,” Harmon, of Oak Park, said.

Wrigley Field, which opened in 1914, underwent a $1 billion renovation project throughout the 2010’s in connection to its efforts to someday host another All-Star Game, according to Cubs executive Crane Kenney.

Further upgrades to the security infrastructure around Wrigley are likely coming, with the current plan including $12 million from the state and up to $10 million from the city to install new bollards designed to stop vehicles and move some of the infrastructure in front of Wrigley Field.

“I’m very proud to have worked with the General Assembly to provide security enhancements to bolster public safety around the park,” Pritzker said. “I’m also a proud Cubs fan, so that made it especially easy.”

Cubs chairman and part-owner Tom Ricketts said the state and city have been involved in renovations for longer. Wrigley, nicknamed the Friendly Confines, is located on the city’s North Side, bounded by Clark and Addison streets and Waveland and Sheffield avenues.

“People don’t know this, but Addison is actually a state road,” Ricketts said. “We needed cooperation from the city to move some sidewalks and to help with security efforts. I just really appreciate

the governor and the mayor stepping up to make this happen.”

Ricketts emphasized the All-Star Game and other associated events will bring people to the city.

“We’ll have events at Navy Pier, we’ll do the Home Run Derby on the night before, we’ll have other games, and they also bring the Major League Baseball draft,” Ricketts said. “So it’ll be an incredible week for Chicago.”

That’s if the game happens at all. There is increasing tension between MLB players and owners as they approach the end of the current collective bargaining agreement in December 2026.

Once that contract ends, it could result in a lockout and potentially the first canceled regular-season games since a player strike in the mid-90s, not counting games that were canceled during the pandemic. If the season is impacted severely enough, the All-Star Game may be canceled altogether.

The game is scheduled for July 13, 2027.

The vast majority of US adults are stressed about grocery costs, an AP-NORC poll finds

NEW YORK (AP) — The vast majority of U.S. adults are at least somewhat stressed about the cost of groceries, a new poll finds, as prices continue to rise and concerns about the impact of President Donald Trump’s tariffs remain widespread.

About half of all Americans say the cost of groceries is a “major” source of stress in their life right now, while 33% say it’s a “minor” source of stress, according to the poll from The Associated PressNORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Only 14% say it’s not a source of stress, underscoring the pervasive anxiety most Americans continue to feel about the cost of everyday essentials.

Other financial stressors — like the cost of housing or the amount of money in their bank accounts — are also broadly felt, but they weigh more heavily on younger Americans, who are less likely than older adults to have significant savings or own property.

The survey also found that about 4 in 10 Americans under age 45 say they’ve used what are known as “buy now, pay later” services when spending on entertainment or restaurant meals or when paying for essentials like groceries or medical care.

Adam Bush, 19, based in Portland, New York, is one of those younger Americans who has used pay-later services for things like groceries or entertainment. Bush works as a welder, fabricating parts for trucks for Toyota, and makes under $50,000 per year.

“I just keep watching the prices go up, so I’m looking for the cheapest possible stuff,” he said. “Hot pockets and TV dinners.”

Everyone is stressed about groceries Groceries are one of the most far-reaching financial stressors, affecting the young and old alike, the poll finds. While Americans over age 60 are less likely than younger people to feel major financial anxiety about housing, their savings, child care, or credit card debt, they are just as worried about the cost of groceries.

Esther Bland, 78, who lives in Buckley, Washington, said groceries are a “minor” source of stress — but only because her local food banks fill the gap. Bland relies on her Social Security and disability

payments each month to cover her rent and other expenses — such as veterinary care for her dogs — in retirement, after decades working in an office processing product orders.

“I have no savings,” she said. “I’m not sure what’s going on politically when it comes to the food banks, but if I lost that, groceries would absolutely be a major source of stress.”

Bland’s monthly income mainly goes toward her electric, water and cable bills, she said, as well as care of her dogs and other household needs.

“Soap, paper towels, toilet paper. I buy gas at Costco, but we haven’t seen $3 a gallon here in a long time,” she said. “I stay home a lot. I only put about 50 miles on my car a week.”

According to the poll, 64% of the lowest-income Americans — those who have a household income of less than $30,000 a year — say the cost of groceries is a “major” stressor. That’s compared with about 4 in 10 Americans who have a household income of $100,000 or more.

But even within that higher-income group, only about 2 in 10 say grocery costs aren’t a worry at all.

Women and Hispanic adults are especially economically anxious

Housing is another substantial source of worry for U.S. adults — along with their savings, their income and the cost of health care. About half of U.S. adults say housing is a “major” source of stress, according to the poll, while about 4 in 10 say that about the amount of money they get paid, the amount of money they have saved and the cost of health care.

About 3 in 10 say credit card debt is a “major” source of stress, while about 2 in 10 say that about the cost of child care and student debt.

But some groups are feeling much more anxiety about their finances than others. Women, for instance, are more likely than men to report high levels of stress about their income, savings, the cost of groceries and the cost of health care. Hispanic adults are also particularly concerned about housing costs and both credit card and student debt. About two-thirds of Hispanic adults say the cost of housing is a “major” source of stress, compared with about half of Black adults and about 4 in 10 white adults.

Some people are making changes to

their lifestyle as a result of high costs. Shandal LeSure, 43, who works as a receptionist for a rehabilitation hospital in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and makes between $85,000 and $100,000 a year, said she’s started shopping for groceries at less expensive stores.

“It’s an adjustment,” she said. “Sometimes the quality isn’t as good.”

Many US adults have used ‘buy now, pay later’ services

As they stretch limited budgets, about 3 in 10 U.S. adults overall say they’ve used “buy now, pay later” services such as Afterpay or Klarna to purchase groceries, entertainment, restaurant meals or meal delivery, or medical or dental care, according to the poll.

Bland, the Washington state retiree, said she’s paid for pet surgery with a pay-later plan.

Younger Americans are much likelier than older people to have used pay-later plans for entertainment, groceries or restaurant meals, but there’s no age gap on medical care. Black and Hispanic people are also especially likely to adopt the plans.

An increasing share of “buy now, pay later” customers are having trouble repaying their loans, according to recent disclosures from the lenders. The loans are marketed as a safer alternative to traditional credit cards, but there are risks, including a lack of federal oversight. Some consumer watchdogs also say the plans lead consumers to overextend themselves financially.

LeSure said she’s used pay-later services for things like new clothes, while she balances debt payments for a car loan, student loans and medical bills. She’s also turned to them to cover hotel costs after being evicted.

“That’s been able to help me stretch my dollar,” she said.

Sanders reported from Washington.

The AP-NORC poll of 1,437 adults was conducted July 10-14, using a sample drawn from NORC’s probability-based AmeriSpeak Panel, which is designed to be representative of the U.S. population. The margin of sampling error for adults overall is plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

Solar will prevail

There have been three major efforts to shift to solar energy since the end of World War II. Enormous amounts of oil was expended during the war. Providing a solar alternative was seen as keeping oil prices under control and extending oil supplies. A solar plan was developed during the Truman Administration and passed onto the Eisenhower Administration. It was not implement and instead the peaceful use of the atom was promoted. The focus on the atom led to the building of nuclear power plants in which uranium was used as fuel. During the Carter administration another effort was underway to encourage solar energy. The effort was undercut by the Reagan Administration. But once again the solar industry reemerged and persisted for many years. Now solar energy is again under attack with the arrival of Trump administration.

This time the attack of solar energy in all its forms is extensive and includes the environmental reforms used to justify the need to reduce the consumption of fossil

fuels, control climate change, curtail pollution, provide funds for research documenting and reporting on environmental deterioration and controlling education.

As the U.S. moves away from renewable energy and efficiency it calls for the dramatic increase in the construction and operation of AI facilities which are expected to dramatically increase the demand for electricity. The end of the week listings of July 25 of the Sun Day Report indicates that as the U.S. moves away from solar and wind energy the global economy is finding solar and wind the least costly energy sources.

Our support of solar energy continues long after when we returned from graduate school at the University of Michigan. I was encouraged to develop and teach an energy efficiency class in which I included solar energy. The class included a trip to Soldiers Grove Wisconsin where the business district was moved off the floodplain of the Kickapoo River and onto some higher ground on the edge of the community.

The new business district included an unprecedented ordinance requiring

all new buildings in in it were required to secure at least 50% of its heat from the sun. The project included heavy insulation, earth berming, south facing roof slopes, energy efficient windows, heat storage along with blowers and hydronic systems to distribute the heat when needed.

The project was a success and illustrated how to live well while consuming very little energy and producing far less pollution from burning fossil fuels.

It continues in use today. However limited upkeep and lax regulation has limited the energy efficiency of some of the buildings. Still the buildings remain an excellent example of the effectiveness of solar energy.

We like the overall project as it addresses two environmental problems prevalent today including the excessive consumption of energy and the flooding of communities built on flood plains. The numerous floods occurring in the U.S. and the world result from building on flood plains, not enforcing ordinances and regulations and not upgrading maps and regulations as new levels of floods occur and encompass more buildings.

A new solar village was build in South Florida and was opened in January of 2018 on the 18,000 acre Babcock Ranch outside of Fort Meyers. Everything in it is built to withstand a Category 3 hurricane in which wind speeds of 145 miles per hour. The land on which it was built was elevated 25 feet above sea level to prevent ocean storm surge flooding. It is the country’s first solar city and its wires are located underground. Its electrical system continued to function when a category 4 hurricane hit nearby in 2022.

While other countries continue to increase their reliance on solar and wind energy, as their costs continue to fall, our country intensifies our consumption of fossil fuels and nuclear power while ignoring the risks associated with their use.

All energy sources we use involve releasing pollutants to the environment. As individuals we know using less energy solves multiple problems by cutting energy consumption, reducing pollution, saving money and providing energy security Solar may not solve all our energy and environmental problems but its benefits are substantial.
