What’s Local: Weatherman enjoying downtown life By Jim Hagerty Reporter

ROCKFORD – There’s a lot happing downtown Rockford. Just ask WIFR meteorologist Ethan Rosuck. Rosuck, 24, has been a resident of Burnham Lofts for eight months, after six months of commuting from Chicago’s north suburbs. “For me, the distance to work is perfect,” Rosuck said. “The station is out on Meridian Road, and you know there isn’t much out there at all. Because I was commuting for months an hour each way, I was ready to cut that down as much as possible. Burnham Lofts was able to come through with that.” Then there’s the building itself. Named after architect Daniel Burnham, the former Rockford Trust Building has been part of the city’s backdrop for more than 100 years. And while the 11-floor complex’s heyday as an office building was long before Rosuck’s time, its history has certainly not been lost on anyone.

“I also love the building itself--lots of history behind it,” the Ball State University graduate said. “The location is perfect because it’s literally in the central part of downtown, walking distance to many amazing restaurants and bars. It’s a good location for festivals, close to the BMO for many events, shows and IceHogs games. I like being near things, and this provides that perfectly. I love the view from my place, and the rooftop is great. (It’s) perfect to host people for a party, to relax, or grill and sit by the fire pit while enjoying the views.” Those views, he says, are of a city on the rise, a de-industrialized town that’s taking on a new identity following a mass manufacturing exodus of the 1980s. A mixture of industry carries the city today complemented by growing cultural, entertainment and tourism sectors that have given “Made in Rockford” a whole new meaning. “The amount of revitalization that is continuously going on in this city is unlike anything I’ve seen anywhere,” Rosuck

said. “(There are) consistent events going on, new restaurants opening, a great bar scene. All of that is found throughout the Stateline but more noticeably in downtown Rockford. I love the fact that most of the old buildings are preserved and are being used for something else. Getting rid of the ‘blight’ I know is something the City of Rockford is working on as a near top priority. People come to downtown Rockford because the city did something right and it shows.” When he’s not reporting the news and weather, Rosuck can be found playing Rockford’s golf courses, bowling, watching TV and enjoying the city with friends and co-workers. “In addition, I’m very close with my family, so it’s nice being just over an hour drive from them,” he said. “It makes it very easy to visit. I’m still making new friends here but if you have any recommendations of anything or anywhere I must check out while I’m here, definitely let me know.”

‘Christmas Tree Calculator’ predicts best day to buy trees Staff Report

SAN FRANCISCO - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Square, Inc., in partnership with the National Christmas Tree Association, released a Christmas Tree Calculator and data report, based on Square sales from thousands of Christmas tree farmers and sellers across the country. Using price fluctuations throughout the holiday season, the calculator helps consumers strategically select the best day to buy their tree, based on their region, how long they plan to keep it, and desired budget. According to Square sales data, the report shows that Christmas tree prices increased 23% from 2015 to 2018, with the average price rising from $62 to $76. Last season alone, prices saw a 5% increase. Industry experts from the National Christmas Tree Association note that the price increase stems from strong consumer demand for real Christmas trees, particularly from millennials, coupled with a tight tree supply and therefore little reason for retailers and growers to offer deep discounts. explains. Square data shows that the Christmas tree buying season kicks into high gear on Black Friday with an average price of $79, and prices spike on Cyber Monday, reaching $84. For customers seeking a deal, holding out until the week before Christmas could save you up to 29%. Prices for procrastinators hit an all time low on Christmas Eve at $50. In order to determine the best time to buy a tree in your area, check out Square’s Christmas Tree Calculator, which suggests the ideal date to purchase your real Christmas tree based on region, desired budget, and how long you hope to keep it. “Year after year, we see continued growth in the number of Christmas trees sold at tree farms,” O’Connor says. He attributes much of this growth to the popularity of agritainment, otherwise known as farm-based entertainment and activities like hayrides, arts and crafts, light shows, pig racing, corn mazes, and more. “With the increased consumer desire for authentic farm experiences, we’re noticing many of our members tap into that cultural trend by creating a space where families can spend an entire afternoon or evening. It’s a way to create new family traditions while putting a face to growers and truly understanding

where their trees come from.” For a seasonal industry like Christmas trees, agritainment is also opening the doors for business owners to diversify revenue streams. Take Michael May, for example, owner of Lazy Acres Farm in Chunky, Mississippi. During the Christmas season, visitors can ride Lazy Acres’ tractor-drawn sleigh into the fields to cut down their own tree, drive through their Christmas light show, spend time at the animal park, or visit Santa’s Workshop, where elves help families decorate Christmas Cookies, design ornaments, and build their own stuffed animals.

Trump backing o� banning vaping flavors popular with teens BY JONATHAN LEMIRE, MATTHEW PERRONE AND DARLENE SUPERVILLE ASSOCIATED PRESS

WASHINGTON (AP) – When President Donald Trump boarded Air Force One to fly to a Kentucky campaign rally two weeks ago, a plan was in place for him to give final approval to a plan to ban most flavored e-cigarettes. By the time Trump landed back at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington a few hours later, the plan was o�. And its future is unclear. For nearly two months, momentum had been building inside the White House to try to halt a youth vaping epidemic that experts feared was hurting as many as 5 million teenagers. Both first lady Melania Trump and Ivanka Trump, the president’s daughter and senior adviser, pushed for the ban, which was also being championed internally by White House counselor Kellyanne Conway, who has taken the lead on some public health issues. But as Trump sat surrounded by political advisers on the flights to and from Lexington, he grew reluctant to sign the ban, convinced it could alienate voters who would be financially or otherwise a�ected by a vaping ban, according to two White House and campaign o�cials not authorized to speak publicly about private conversations. A news conference scheduled by Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar to announce the ban was canceled, while more meetings with industry leaders and lobbyists were proposed, according to the o�cials. Trump tweeted last week that he’ll be meeting with vaping industry representatives, medical professionals and others “to come up with an acceptable solution to the Vaping and E-cigarette dilemma.” The White House has yet to announce a date for a meeting. This month, Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale and others showed the president polling data indicating that e-cigarette users could abandon him if he followed through with the ban, the o�cials said. Campaign aides also highlighted an aggressive social media campaign – #IVapeIVote – in which advocates claimed a ban would force the closure of vaping shops, eliminating jobs and sending users of electronic cigarettes back to traditional smokes. Parscale also pointed out the risk that a ban could have on e-cigarette users in key battleground states that Trump narrowly won in 2016. Others in the West Wing, including Conway, have argued that a ban could be a winning issue with suburban voters,

including mothers, who have fled the president in large numbers. Few would predict where Trump, who is known to abruptly change his mind, would end up since he recently has been consumed with other matters, notably televised impeachments hearings. The vaping industry’s largest trade group said Monday the administration was heading “in the right direction for adult smokers and their families.” “Bans don’t work, they never have,” Tony Abboud, executive director of the Vapor Technology Association, said in a statement. Gregory Conley, president of the A mer ic a n Vapi ng A ss o c i at ion, a n advocacy organization, added that the government should put in place “sensible and targeted regulations” before it resorts to prohibition, which opponents of a ban said could lead to the creation of an underground market for e-cigarettes. But Matt Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, said Trump would be guilty of “terrible public policy” and “bad politics” if he backs down. “This is one of the very few issues on which public views are unified,” Myers said in a telephone interview. “There are a small number of vape shop owners who are loud and don’t care. But there are millions more moms and dads who are deeply concerned.” Robin Koval, president and CEO of the Truth Initiative, a nonprofit, anti-tobacco organization, called on Trump to implement the original plan. “The health of America’s youth must come first and is not for sale or political gain,” Koval said in a statement. The first lady opened the White House to a group of young people from the Truth Initiative in October to tell her about their experiences with vaping. Trump’s initial pledge Sept. 11 to ban virtually all flavored e-cigarettes stunned vaping proponents and was immediately embraced by anti-tobacco advocates. In an Oval O�ce appearance with the first lady and Azar, Trump said the government would act within weeks to protect children from fruit, candy, dessert and other sweet vaping flavors, including mint and menthol. The announcement followed a tweet two days earlier by Mrs. Trump expressing concern “about the growing epidemic of e-cigarette use in our children.” “We need to do all we can to protect the public from tobacco-related disease and death, and prevent e-cigarettes from becoming an on-ramp to nicotine addiction for a generation of youth,” she said.

But within days, Trump tweeted that e-cigarettes might be a less-harmful alternative for smokers, a point long made by the industry. Meanwhile, vaping lobbyists, conservative groups and Republican lawmakers from key states warned Trump that a crackdown could cost him with voters. The Vapor Technology Association launched ads and an online campaign promising to punish Trump and other politicians who support vaping restrictions. Conservative groups that have long promoted vaping as an alternative to smoking, including Grover Norquist’s Americans for Tax Reform, joined the criticism. That group and others helped organize protests against banning flavors, including one outside the White House. Trump supporters also showed up at some of his campaign rallies holding signs expressing their opposition to a ban. The industry warned some 15,000 to 19,000 vaping shops across the country - and jobs - could be wiped out if flavors were eliminated. The administration was widely expected earlier this month to announce a scaled-back flavor ban that would exempt menthol, citing research that the flavor was not widely used by children. But no decision came. Trump instead told reporters on Nov. 8 – four days after his political advisers buttonholed him on the Kentucky trip – he was considering new approaches to curbing teen use, including raising the minimum age for purchasing tobacco from 18 to 21. Last week, Wisconsin Republican Sen. Ron Johnson sent Trump a letter warning against “unchecked government action that stifles innovation and restricts adults’ freedom to choose safer alternatives to smoking.” Asked how disappointed the first lady would be if the president did not follow through with a ban, her spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, who also speaks for the president, said Mrs. Trump’s priority is the health and safety of children. “She does not believe e-cigarettes or any nicotine products should be marketed or available to children,” Grisham said. Underage vaping has reached what health o�cials call epidemic levels. In the latest government survey, 1 in 4 high school students reported using e-cigarettes in the previous month. Anticipating a ban on flavors, Juul Labs, the nation’s largest e-cigarette maker, said this month it would stop selling its best-selling, mint-flavored nicotine pods.

Diplomat says he should have seen Ukraine-Biden connection By Colleen Long and Eric Tucker Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) – The former special envoy to Ukraine testified Tuesday he should have realized – as many of his colleagues did – that President Donald Trump was holding up military aid to pressure the country to investigate political rival Joe Biden. Testifying in the House impeachment inquiry, Kurt Volker said he believes now, thanks to hindsight and the testimony of other witnesses, that Trump was using the aid to compel Ukraine to investigate Biden and his son Hunter, who was on the board of a Ukrainian gas company, Burisma. But Volker insisted he did not know of the effort at the time, despite his deep involvement with Ukrainian officials on a statement – never released – that would have committed the country to investigating Burisma and the 2016 U.S. election. Nor did he make the connection after Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s personal lawyer, mentioned allegations against Joe Biden during a July 19 breakfast, Volker said. “In retrospect I should have seen that connection differently, and had I done so, I would have raised my own objections,” he said Tuesday. Volker was testifying alongside former White House national security official Tim Morrison in the second hearing of the day in the House’s impeachment inquiry, the fourth in history against a U.S. president. Both witnesses were requested by Republicans. Democrats say there may be grounds for impeachment in Trump’s push for Ukraine’s new leader to investigate his Democratic rival and the 2016 U.S. election as he withheld critical U.S. military assistance. Trump denies any such quid pro quo, and he dismissed the hearings Tuesday as a “kangaroo court.” Morrison, who stepped down from the National Security Council shortly before he appeared before House investigators behind closed doors last month, has said he was not concerned that anything illegal was discussed on Trump’s July 25 call, something Republicans have repeatedly highlighted. “As I stated during my deposition, I feared at the time of the call on July 25th how its disclosure would play in Washington’s political climate,” he said Tuesday. “My fears have been realized.” He told lawmakers Tuesday that the transcript of the call was incorrectly placed in a highly secure location. “It was a mistake,” he said, merely “an

administrative error.” Volker was the first person to testify behind closed doors in the inquiry that started in September, resigning his position shortly before he did so. Since then, a parade of witnesses have testified publicly and privately about what they recalled about the July 25 phone call between Trump and Ukraine’s new leader, Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Many of those statements cast doubt on Volker’s account that he didn’t know Burisma was tied to Biden, and that he wasn’t aware of a possible quid pro quo. Volker was not on the call. On Tuesday, Volker said he opposed any hold on security assistance. “I did not understand that others believed that any investigation of the Ukrainian company, Burisma, which had a history of accusations of corruption, was tantamount to investigating Vice President Biden,” he said. “I drew a distinction between the two.” Even though, he said, he understood that Hunter Biden had been a board member. Morrison has confirmed to investigators that he witnessed a key September c onve r s at ion i n Wa r s aw b e t we en Gordon Sondland, the U.S. ambassador to the European Union, and a Ukrainian official. Sondland told the official that U.S. aid might be freed if the country’s top prosecutor “would go to the mike and announce that he was opening the Burisma investigation,” Morrison said in previous closed-door testimony. Volker shifted his account of a pivotal July 10 interaction at the White House. In his closed-door interview last month, he said there was no discussion of Giuliani’s activities in Ukraine or investigations sought by the president. But on Tuesday, he said the meeting was essentially over when Sondland made a “general” comment about investigations. “I think all of us thought it was inappropriate; the conversation did not continue and the meeting concluded,” Volker said. A series of text messages Volker provided to lawmakers showed conversations between him, Sondland and other leaders where they discuss the need for Ukraine to launch investigations, including into Burisma. Volker said meeting with Giuliani was just part of the dialogue, and he had one in-person meeting with him, in which Giuliani “raised, and I rejected, the conspiracy theory that Vice President Biden would have been influenced in his duties as Vice President by money paid to his son.”

He said he has known Biden for more than two decades and believes him to be an honorable man. “The allegations against Vice President Biden are self-serving and non-credible,” Volker said. Volker said he wasn’t part of an irregular foreign policy channel led Giuliani, as others have testified. He also said Trump never christened him, Ambassador Gordon Sondland and Energy Secretary the “three amigos” in charge of Ukraine policy. “My role was not some irregular chan-

nel, but the official channel,” Volker said. Volker also said a senior aide to Zelenskiy approached him last summer to ask to be connected to Giuliani. He said he made clear to the Zelenskiy aide, Andrey Yermak, that Giuliani was a private citizen and not a representative of the U.S. government. Volker himself requested a meeting in July with Giuliani. He said Giuliani mentioned the accusations about the Bidens, as well as a discredited theory that Ukraine interfered in the 2016 U.S. election.

The Veronica Blumhorst Case, Part 5: A key phone call and bunk leads Editor’s note: The following is the fifth installment in a series about the disappearance of 21-year-old Veronica Blumhorst, who vanished Sept. 20, 1990, after finishing her shift at a Mendota, Illinois, grocery store. Her car was found in her garage less than a mile from the store. It is believed she had only $10 on her when she vanished.

MENDOTA - For all but one employee of Dempsey’s Super Valu, Sept. 19, 1990, was just another day. For Veronica Blumhorst, it marked the last time she’d ever punch in at the small-town grocery store. Blumhorst, 21, arrived at work just before 5 p.m. and began her shift like she always did. However, Sept. 19 was Veronica’s first day back after being out with mononucleosis and, according to co-workers, she hadn’t fully recovered. Sharon Vandiver, who worked with her that night, repeatedly mentioned how sick she appeared. “Sharon said several times that (Veronica) was really sick and did not think she would be in on Sept. 20,” Menodta Police officer Lonnie Kent said in a report. “(Veronica) took one of her pills at 12:00.” According to Vandiver, Veronica’s older sister visited her around 9:30 p.m., presumably to discuss a doctor’s appointment scheduled for the next day. That was about the time Veronica’s boyfriend says Veronica called and told him about that appointment. Police also followed up on a report that co-worker Jason Stephenitch was overheard at 11 p.m., telling Veronica he’d be back at 1 a.m. to pick her up. Stephenitch denied that report. “Jason stated that he did talk to her but does not remember saying anything like that,” Mendota Police Investigator John Pakenham’s report said. “Jason sated

that he would like to take a polygraph.” When their shifts ended around 1 a.m., Veronica rented a movie before she and Vandiver exited the store. “They walked to their autos, which were parked on the west side of the Super Valu parking lot,” Pakenham said. “Sharon stated that Veronica left the parking lot first after they warmed their autos up to get fog off the windshields. Veronica drove north out of the parking lot onto Meriden Street and went east. That’s the last time Veronica was seen.” Todd Blumhorst told The Times before his death in 2013 that the nature of his sister’s Sept. 20 doctor’s appointment is steeped in speculation. Some, including their mother, Betty, say it pertained to lingering mono. Others, because her boyfriend told police about a possible pregnancy, believe it was something else altogether. Although whether Veronica was in a delicate way may never be confirmed, the conversation she had with her boyfriend Sept. 19 could be a key to unlock important evidence. Does the time of her sister’s visit coincide with the phone call? Did her boyfriend “lose his mind” as he speculated, when he learned he may have fathered a child?

Sightings

No missing persons case is without an occasional lead that goes nowhere. In facts, they’re ample, sometimes too many to count. Veronica Blumhorst’s disappearance was no exception. Soon after she vanished and missing posters were distributed throughout northern Illinois and beyond, people who claimed they’s seen her began to emerge. In October 1990, a Rockford woman reported seeing a woman matching Veronica’s description at a nearby park. Immediately canvassing the area, Rockford officers did not locate anyone.

Dec. 3, 1990, a truck driver stranded in Madison, Wisconsin, said he had been speaking to a blonde woman at a truck stop. The woman was driving a red, two-door Ford Escort and told him she was from Wisconsin Rapids. After seeing Veronica’s missing poster at another truck stop two days later, the man told police she was the woman he spoke to in Madison. She was wearing blue jeans and a long coat. She was approximately 5-6 or shorter, the trucker told police. “(He) stated that if it wasn’t Veronica, she has a twin,” Pakenham said. Veronica’s car was a blue 1989 Chevy Corsica, found parked in her garage the morning of Sept. 20. In April 1991, police received a tip from a woman in Chicago, a bartender at Clark Street tavern, who said a woman matching Veronica’s description had been coming in for the past week. The woman, about 5-feet, 100 pounds, wore a leather jacket and would arrive 1 a.m., and stay for an hour or two. “(The bartender) said that in speaking to this female, she believes that the female is trying to look ‘tough,’ but does not seem

to be that kind of girl,” Pakenham said. According to the bartender, who saw Veronica’s picture on a milk carton, the blonde produced an Illinois ID bearing the name Joy. She could not remember the woman’s last name, only that that she went by Jan. Asking another patron for help gleaning information from the woman, the bartender said the woman stated that she attended public high school in Oak Lawn. The bartender, who grew up in Oak Lawn, mentioned the name of the only public high school. The stranger’s answer further puzzled the barmaid. “The female said that was not the high school she went to,” Pakenham wrote in his report. Police later spoke to the woman and concluded she was not Veronica. Another possible Chicago sighting also did not check out, nor did a report out of Montgomery, Alabama. Tom Hanks didn’t want to be Mr. Rogers. Then he met Marielle By Jake Coyle

NEW YORK (AP) – Tom Hanks has never played a superhero. But when the actor recently donned a very simple cardigan sweater, and the slacks to go with it, he felt like one. “I felt like Batman. It felt like I was wearing the cape and the cowl of the Dark Knight detective,” Hanks says. “There’s only one person you can be when you put those things on, and that’s Fred Rogers.” Since it was first announced, Hanks’ casting as the beloved children’s television host in “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” has had the feeling of kismet. Here was an actor nearly synonymous with affability, with “niceness,” playing one of the friendliest faces to ever flicker across a TV screen. Hanks might as well have been answering a Bat Signal in the sky. But as inevitable as Hanks playing Mr. Rogers may have seemed, it never would have happened without Marielle Heller, the filmmaker of the literary forger drama “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” and the ‘70s coming of age tale “The Diary of a Teenage Girl.” The film’s script, by Noah Harpster and Micah Fitzerman-Blue, had been floating around for years before Heller got attached. Hanks had already passed on it, more than once. “I didn’t pass on you,” Hanks said in an

interview alongside Heller. “I just passed on a thing.” It would probably please Mr. Rogers that the first big-screen fiction film about him was based, from the start, on a newfound friendship. Hanks and Heller met at a backyard birthday party for Hanks’ son Colin. Hanks had just read a New York Times article about female filmmakers and mentioned it to Heller after learning she was a director. “And she said, ‘I’m in it,’” recalls Hanks. “And I said, ‘Well, of course you are and I have to remove my shoe from my mouth.” Hanks, newly resolved to work more with female directors, promised to watch “Diary of a Teenage Girl.” “I thought, ‘Sure, Tom Hanks. I’m sure you’ll run right out and watch my movie,’” says Heller. “And you did!” Within days, Hanks called to set up a meeting, and that led to “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood.” Sony Pictures releases it in theaters this weekend. Based loosely on an Esquire Magazine article by Tom Junod, the film’s protagonist is a New York journalist named Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys) assigned to profile Rogers. Heller and Hanks view Rogers as the movie’s antagonist – the agent of change in Lloyd’s life, whose sincerity and caring disarm the cynical reporter. Hanks and Heller. The production had the blessing of Joanne Rogers, Fred’s widow, and much of it was shot on location in Pittsburgh. Hanks wore Rogers’ old ties. He swam the same laps in a local pool. They collectively tried to live the kindness preached by Rogers, an ordained Presby terian min ister. The mov ie impresses the point that Rogers wasn’t a saint; he had to work at being good. “At one point early on, Tom said to me, ‘I get the feeling none of us are going to be the same after making this movie,’” Heller says. That meant trying to slow down not just the tempo of the scenes but the entire workings of a movie set. Heller’s son, 2-years-old when they started, was often on set, and occasionally in the director’s chair. Heller shortened the day-to-day schedule so that everyone, including herself, could be home by their children’s bedtime on most nights. “For me, as a mom of a little kid, that’s the difference between being able to keep making movies or not being able to keep making movies,” says Heller. “How do we think about our humanity while making movies? Would Fred Rogers have wanted us to make a movie about him where we all abandoned our kids in order to make the movie? I don’t think so.” Both were relatively new disciples to Rogers. As a kid, the 40-year-old Marin County-raised Heller dismissed him as too schmaltzy. But now a parent, she found herself gravitating toward Mr. Rogers as a guide to explaining the world to her son. Hanks, 63, hadn’t raised his four now-grown children watching “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood,” so the dozens of hours he spent watching it to prepare for the role was eye-opening. “I almost feel silly talking about it,” says Hanks. “This movie has actually made me think a lot about myself as a man and a father. When I saw Mari, I said, ‘Hey, thanks putting me in this movie, because you kind of changed my life, boss.’” For Hanks, the greatest lesson from playing Rogers has to do with listening. As an actor and a celebrity, it’s part of his job to be entertaining, to be glib. And he is extraordinarily good at it. Few people in person live up to their reputation more than Hanks does, who began the interview delighted at the idea of drinking from “a box of water.” Quietude doesn’t exactly come naturally, nor would most around Hanks want it to. “There is a thing that I do: W-A-I-T. It stands for ‘Why Am I Talking?’” explains Hanks. “I wrote that down in a notebook

that I keep to remind myself that listening, for me anyway, is a disciplinary art. I have to force myself to listen because I love the sound of my own voice and because I’m a movie star I’ve been infantilized by everybody I come across who says I’m just wonderful. ‘Look at you! You can stand up so good and you can eat with a fork! What a special, special, special movie star you are!’” Slowing down took effort for Hanks, and for Rhys. At one point, they met to rehearse a lengthy scene at Rhys’ New York apartment. “I said, ‘Are you as exhausted by this as I am?’” says Hanks. “He said, ‘Tom, I’m confounded by how much silence we have to have in this movie.’” The movie called on Hanks to learn how to earnestly – not out of habit – ask questions like “How are you?” Heller would tell Hanks to thank Lloyd, “but this time mean it.” In her three richly textured films, Heller has shown an uncommon talent for coaxing three-dimensional performances out of her actors, including Melissa McCarthy and Bel Powley, that radiate humanity and humor while omitting sentimentality. “I’m sort of like the authenticity police,” says Heller. “I’m there to make sure what we’re capturing is true. So much of my job is to be the one on set going, ‘Did I feel that? Did it feel true?’” In Hanks’ Mr. Rogers, Heller wasn’t interested in an impression. A wig and some eyebrows were OK, but that was it. And, of course, the cardigan. The first time Hanks stepped onto set at WQED’s Fred Rogers Studio in character, sweater-to-sneakers, Heller says, “the room gasped.” “It was like coming in as Elvis into Graceland,” says Hanks, a little sheepishly. “I had no sense of self. I really felt like I was having an out-of-body experience of watching this other guy be Fred Rogers.” Having recently explained death to her now 5-year-old son, Heller was concerned he’d be confused. She didn’t have to worry. “He said, ‘Mom, I know that’s Tom Hanks,’” says Heller, laughing. Hanks smiles. “Hip kid, man.” On their way out of the interview, Heller leans against Hanks and says how much she enjoys talking about the film with him. He’s preoccupied with Heller’s batting average as a director. “Mari ‘three-for-three Heller,” he says, liking the sound of it. He turns to her. “You know,” Hanks says, “none of these movies should have worked.” They walk out arm in arm.

‘Trolls Live!’ ready for Rockford shows By Jim Hagerty Reporter

ROCKFORD - Fans of Poppy, Branch and all of their friends will have an opportunity to be up close and personal with them as “Trolls LIVE!” takes over the BMO Harris Bank Center Nov. 23-24. Rockford is the second stop in the show’s 32-city tour that runs through May 17. The live production is in partnership with the “Trolls” film franchise, including “Trolls World Tour,” which is due out in 2020. “Fans will get to see a lot of their favorite characters,” said Laura Wheeler

of VStar Entertainment Group. “If they have a favorite, it will likely be on stage.” The journey begins when the trolls’ Hug Time is unexpectedly put at risk. US stock indexes edge mostly lower as retailers sink By Alex Veiga

Major stock indexes ended a wobbly day of trading on Wall Street mostly lower Tuesday, as losses in energy companies and department store operators edged out gains elsewhere in the market. A solid showing for technology sector stocks helped lift the Nasdaq composite to another all-time high, while the S&P 500 index finished less than 0.1% below the record close it reached on Monday. Energy sector stocks took the heaviest losses as the price of U.S. crude oil dropped 3.2%. Disappointing earnings from Kohl’s sent other retailer stocks into a skid. A slide in Home Depot’s stock weighed on the Dow Jones Industrial Average, which ended lower a day after inching to a record high. “It’s almost a carbon copy of yesterday,” Jeff Zipper, managing director at U.S. Bank Private Wealth Management. “The S&P basically flat, the Nasdaq obviously up. Right now, the markets, as we go toward year end, their path of least resistance is up.”

The S&P 500 index slipped 1.85 points, or less than 0.1%, to 3,120.18. The Dow fell 102.20 points, or 0.4%, to 27,934.02. The Nasdaq climbed 20.72 points, or 0.2%, to 8,570.66. Smaller company stocks fared better than the rest of the market, driving up the Russell 2000 index up 5.95 points, or 0.4%, at 1,598.29. Major stock indexes in Europe closed mostly higher. Bond prices rose, sending bond yields lower. The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 1.79% from 1.80% late Monday. U.S. stocks have been steadily rising for weeks as a mix of solid economic data and corporate earnings inject confidence into the market and diminished fears that a recession was imminent. Technology, by far the best-performing sector this year, has done especially well as investors have grown more hopeful that the U.S. and China will make progress in ending their trade war. Traders hope the world’s two biggest economies can deliver on plans for a “phase one” deal before new and more

damaging tariffs take effect next month. Tech stocks were among the big gainers Tuesday, led by chipmakers. Advanced Micro Devices climbed 3.5% and Broadcom rose 2.1%. Health care stocks accounted for the biggest swath of gains. Pfizer rose 1.2% and Amgen gained 1.7%. Those gains were kept in check by losses elsewhere in the market. Oil producers declined as crude oil prices took another stumble. Marathon Petroleum slid 3.4% and Occidental Petroleum lost 3%. Energy, which trails all other S&P 500 sectors with a gain of only 1% for the year, dropped 1.5% Tuesday. Disappointing quarterly report cards from Home Depot and Kohl’s weighed on retail stocks. Home Depot dropped 5.4% after the home improvement company reported weak sales growth for the most recent quarter and cut its forecast for the year. Rival Lowe’s, which will report earnings on Wednesday, fell 1.4%. Kohl’s plunged 19.5% after the depart-

ment store operator slashed its profit forecast for the year following weak third-quarter earnings. The weak outlook prompted traders to dump other department store stocks. Macy’s sank 10.9% and Nordstrom lost 6.3%. Both report their own results on Thursday. Not all big retailers had a bad day. Shares in the TJX Cos., rose 1.8% after the parent of T.J. Maxx and Marshalls reported encouraging third-quarter earnings and raised its profit forecast for the year. Benchmark crude oil fell $1.84 to settle at $55.21 a barrel. Brent crude oil, the international standard, dropped $1.53 to close at $60.91 a barrel. Wholesale gasoline fell 2 cents to $1.60 per gallon. Heating oil declined 4 cents to $1.86 per gallon. Natural gas fell 6 cents to $2.51 per 1,000 cubic feet. Gold rose $2.40 to $1,473.30 per ounce, silver rose 11 cents to $17.10 per ounce and copper rose 3 cents to $2.65 per pound. The dollar fell to 108.53 Japanese yen from 108.65 yen on Monday. The euro strengthened to $1.1078 from $1.1076.

Ecological restoration – prairies and prairie chickens BY DRS. ROBERT & SONIA VOGL CONTRIBUTORS

Many advocates of preserving and restoring natural areas have a keen interest in preserving and restoring prairies in northern Illinois. Our earliest e�orts at restoring prairies involved planting a small area in the Deer Grove Forest Preserve near Palatine when the late prairie advocate, Ray Schulenberg, gave us plants he had grown in the greenhouse at the Morton Arboretum in the 1960s. Doug Wade and Tim Keller promoted such projects in Ogle County which resulted in the eventual purchase of a small prairie remnant which came to be called the Wade Prairie. In 2010 the Ogle Count y Prairie Preservation Society purchased a former Christmas tree farm on which nine high quality prairie plots had been protected by the previous owners and employees. We have been slowly removing the overgrown Christmas trees and replanting the cleared areas with prairie seeds gathered from the site.

Restoring habitats such as prairies also involves documenting the plants present as well as the animal populations on the site. As is common knowledge habitat preservation being critical to wildlife preservation. Recently, PPSOC had a butterfly study done to document species and their relative abundance. Tim Keller, an original prairie advocate in this area, has a long held interest in attempting to restore prairie chickens to the prairies in this region. In pursuit of that interest Peggy Farrell, an outreach specialist and environmental educator from the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point, was asked to make a presentation on prairie chicken projects in central Wisconsin. In her introduction she mentioned she is not a biologist but incorporates information in her presentations from biologists involved in managing prairie chickens on sites in Wisconsin. Around 1900 prairie chickens were found in abundance on grasslands in Wisconsin and market hunters decimated them for sales to fancy restaurants in

Chicago and other major urban areas. The bird populations collapsed from the hunting pressure and the last legal hunt in Wisconsin was held in 1935. In the 1950s Conservation Club members and the Department of Natural Resources in Wisconsin decided to protect remnant prairie chicken populations near Wisconsin Rapids, Stevens Point and Wausau. Consideration is being given to how the four major isolated sites can be connected either through easements or purchase agreements in order to enrich the diversity of the genetics in all the isolated sites. The Buena Vista site was where Fred and Fran Hamerstrom did much of their work with the birds. Fred was awarded the first doctorate from the new degree program established at the University of Wisconsin chaired by Aldo Leopold. Doug Wade, who promoted prairies in Ogle County, was awarded a Master’s degree in wildlife management around the same time and remained in contact with the Hamerstroms. He and Bob Vogl visited the Hamerstroms at their home in

which a few hawks and owls flew freely within the house. Conventional wisdom indicates very large land holdings are essential to re-establish prairie chicken populations; none of the holdings in Ogle County appear large enough at this time to support a free roaming population. However, interest remains high in the area and some enthusiasts are determined to explore how they could return prairie chickens to populate the prairies in our area. Early e�orts to preserve natural areas like prairies has expanded to include the wildlife species such as bison and prairie chickens as a means to protect endangered species. The purse is more than a fashion statement in Kortman holiday group exhibition From J.R. Kortman

The Purse: it’s a functional object, fashion statement, a private space, and even a status symbol. And Friday, November 22nd, the purse is a work of art when more 30 Rockford artists present their visual interpretation of the purse in a holiday group exhibition titled “The Purse: art, design, fashion, function” in the Kortman Gallery. The exhibit will feature works in a variety of media from ceramics, fabric, watercolor, and painting, to sculpture, printmaking, digital imagery, and functional objects. “We thought it would be interesting to merge fashion and art in this gallery commissioned show,” said Doc Slafkosky, gallery director. “The purse has not only a practical aspect, but also a long history

of being an expression of design and prestige from folk art to haute couture. It’s exciting to see how this diverse group of artists takes this idea and interprets it in their specific medium.” Seeing this exhibition is sure to be a fun, entertaining, and thought provoking experience says co-owner Jerry Kortman. ”Artists have taken the purse theme and made it their own,” said Kortman. ”From artist Becky Pelley’s nod to Magritte, to Kyle Wolfe’s whimsical and colorful digital imagery to R. Scott Long’s hand-made leather functional purse, there will something for everyone.” Ceramic artist Lynn Fischer-Carlson says she is intrigued by the purse and how it has become both a fashion statement and a status symbol for women… and men. “My ceramic sculptural purses

are titled “Vanitas” in reference to a visual art genre which often characterizes still life works with contrasting symbols of wealth and the futility of excess and greed.” “A woman’s purse has always been considered a private, personal space. You would never let anyone look into you purse without permission,” said Margret Hynes who created a purse that is ironically made of see-through mesh material. ROCKFORD - Kris Versteeg’s second stint with the Rockford IceHogs came to an end last weekend after the club and two-time Stanley Cup champion mutually agreed to terminate his contract. Versteeg signed a one-year AHL deal with the IceHogs in April, aiming to continue his career in North America while helping Blackhawks prospects get acclimated to the pro game. The latter was going according to plan, as the veteran’s presence in the locker room was a strong one for the guys just starting their careers. Then came a lower body injury, one that gave Versteeg a few weeks to evaluate his long-term plans. He could still skate, shoot and undoubtedly create offense before the injury and would have likely gotten back into shape. But there was a missing ingredient the 33-year-old said is key to playing in the American Hockey League. “I came back and I was feeling good,” Versteeg said. “But I couldn’t match the intensity that these kids were bringing every day. To me, not being able to do that is a disservice to them.” Versteeg said it didn’t sit well with him to be in the lineup without that intensity when it meant up-and-coming players trying to get to the NHL were scratched. “If I’m in there and I am not pulling my weight or doing what I need to do, then it’s not fair to them,” he said. “I knew this was my last year. I looked at the schedule and its compact games coming up. And with the physicality in this league, I don’t know that I would physically hold up for the rest of the season.” As he did to spark his return to Rockford last spring, Versteeg approached IceHogs General Manager last week about calling it a career. Bernard, unlike the first call, wasn’t as quick to accommodate. Instead, he asked Versteeg to take a couple days. “We spoke again Saturday morning and he had come to his final decision,” Bernard said. “Since 2007, when Kris first became a member of the Blackhawks organization, he has represented us with class and professionalism. He will always be a member of our organization’s family and we wish him and his family all the best going forward.” Versteeg skated in six games with Rockford this season and leaves with 50 points (18g, 32a) and 176 penalty minutes in 62 career games. The IceHogs split their weekend series with Grand Rapids, dropping a road game Friday 5-2 before rebounding with a 5-2 win Saturday at the BMO Harris Bank Center. Rockford has won six of its last eight games and is 8-4-0-0 since snapping a season-opening three-game skid. Rockford’s eight wins since Oct. 18 are the fourth-most in the AHL behind only Milwaukee (9), Springfield (9) and Tucson (9). The ‘Hogs have won six of their last seven home games after defeating the Griffins on Saturday. The Hogs’ six total wins at home are tied for the most in the Western Conference and second-most in the entire AHL behind only Hartford (8). In addition, the Hogs are unbeaten at home this season when scoring at least three goals (0-3-0-0 with fewer than 3). Kevin Lankinen notched his fourth consecutive win with a career-high 42 saves Saturday against Grand Rapids. Lankinen has allowed two or fewer goals in four straight games and limited opponents to no more than three goals in each of his last eight starts. He boasts a 2.22 GAA and .925 save percentage over those eight games. Philip Holm netted his third goal of the season Friday at Grand Rapids. He currently leads the club in scoring with 10 points this season, is tied for sixth among league defensemen in goals and ranks tied for 12th in total points. Brandon Hagel posted his first career multi-point game with a goal and an assist Saturday. The winger registered 102 points with Red Deer in the Western Hockey League last season.

No care, all ego: Everyone’s liable but Matt Nagy By Robert Zeglinski Contributor

The greatest trick a figurehead can pull is convincing the world that they’re never to blame. Any time their subordinates fail, it’s never the fault of the person pulling the strings. They failed because they didn’t listen to their mentor or adhere to their standards enough. Leaders of this mold fashion themselves as reputable, reverent geniuses who always write a perfect script. Because they write an ideal outline in advance, complete with every contingency that only they could foresee, they’re irreplaceable. The sum of the parts around them are interchangeable. They’re common, a dime a dozen, so long as their leader is in power and has free reign to act at his heart’s content. A team with once immeasurable preseason expectations, the Bears have managed to do everything but live up to their proposed potential. Their offensive line is a five-man turnstile that finds ingenious ways to kill possessions from series from series. Their receivers drop more passes and denigrate respective opponents after accomplishing nothing than they ever make any notable plays downfield. As is the franchise standard, the quarterback doesn’t belong as a starter. Whether he can be an emergency passer remains to be seen. Their defense, still a top and formidable unit, has regressed, incapable of further carrying a one-note roster. Among the also-rans of the NFL, the Bears are far closer to being one of the worst teams in their conference than a bona fide championship contender. And not ounce of the Bears’ swirling catastrophe is Matt Nagy’s fault. According to Matt Nagy. Nagy’s greatest weapon in his coaching utility belt isn’t his playbook and its obvious limitations. It isn’t platitudes rooted in being one’s most authentic self as if that’s what matters in winning or losing games. It’s obsession. It’s charming people into falling into a flawed line of thinking designed to deflect attention to tertiary concerns and waste energy on the trivial. Like the universal zip line of a superhero in tights and spandex, Nagy never hesitates to use his preeminent weapon. The former Coach of the Year, once the apple of every Chicago football observer’s eye, is a neuroses magnet; like many egotistical football coaches. But it’s Nagy that excels at lulling people into the remnants of his budding psychosis unlike any of his sleep-deprived, self-important peers.

It was curious that Nagy focused on one specific person as the most culpable for his team’s playoff collapse against the Eagles last January. Over the course of eight months, he convinced a city that one “double-doink” was what stood between the Bears and orange and blue confetti raining around them on an elevated silver platform. He brought in approximately 95 kickers over the spring and summer to remedy the Bears’ one prevailing issue. He implemented the radical with an open positional tryout and the unconventional, leaving every competitor to roost in their own devices in deliberate practice silences from the same distance the Bears saw their season end. He made certain that placekicking was the imperative story behind the pursuit of an elusive Lombardi trophy. Not a stellar defense. Not an offense he was poised to evolve and help join a decade of high-flying attacks. Not a roster rife with character and personality and joy and balance. All that was missing was Nagy’s top hat, cane, red-striped shirt, a catchy tune, and promise of a monorail system. Outside of kicker, the Bears were flawless this August. According to Nagy. They didn’t have to improve upon any aspect of their play because he deemed it so. Everyone on the outside was out of their wits for considering the contrary. Because that would acknowledge he as a coach had more work to do after a 12-win opening campaign. He won awards. He turned on flashing lights and disco balls in the Bears’ locker room. He was the smartest person in the room. That person doesn’t have to show more initiative than the bare, expected minimum because they believe their minimum is better than everyone else’s maximum. When they’re asked to push beyond their threshold, their inner circuits go haywire. Does not compute. Stop asking questions. Does not compute. Going above and beyond to fix the Bears’ kicking problems was a natural progression for Nagy’s aura. It was him doing his resolute best to cover for himself and the illusion of his genius. Of every potential outcome of any football play, kicks through a small window in yellow uprights are the most arbitrary. No one has as much of a say in a field goal’s success as the kicker in contrast to every other play where at least two separate people must be working in some delicate harmony. By distancing himself and his coaching from the randomness of kicks, maintaining he had no influence on what transpired, Nagy was able to prop up his

budding legend of The Next Great NFL Coach. Thanks to Nagy, it was forgotten the Bears only scored 15 points in an elimination game. Memory of surrendering a deciding score on their own goal line in the closing minutes was wiped away from all servers. They were infallible in their failure, which in turn washed Nagy’s hands clean of any residual blood. It’s no coincidence that every Bears game since they fell to Philadelphia has been a carbon copy of ineptitude. A rudderless offense with no explosive element in sight. A defense slowly withering, week by week, at the prospect of carrying the weight of an additional 11 men. The coach standing in defiance at the prospect of his plans being questioned game after game. Every problem that petered out the Bears’ first promising season in almost a decade pervades because of none of them were addressed or acknowledged when there was time to fill in the respective gaping potholes. Fresh cement was never mixed because the Bears, based off of Nagy’s supposition, didn’t need to fill in the cracks. Seldom has someone displayed as little as self awareness as to the dire straits of his team’s situation on top of his complicity. But then again, he’s never to blame and never has been. If you don’t understand your history and its mistakes, then you’re doomed to repeat your foibles until the light bulb breaks in your mind. If you change history in accordance to your own personal whims, there’s never anything to learn from.

One of the first life lessons bestowed upon children is the idea of accountability. Taking responsibility for actions and living with the consequences is as much a part of adulthood as paying bills, dating, and weighing an everyday existential crisis. Understanding when it’s time to take responsibility and when it’s time to deflect (never) defines people’s success. It’s the bedrock of happiness. Accepting and acknowledging the inevitable crux of missteps in life is as much a part of living a fulfilling existence as any accomplishment. It’s this humility which allows a person room to grow personally and professionally. The Bears aren’t going to climb out of the 4-6 crevasse of anguish they’ve dug for themselves. There’s too much of a gap in the standings to salvage meaning out of a lost season. They may not have the horses to make a run anyway. But whether they’ll climb out in the near future should also be in question. Doing so would require their leader, Nagy, acknowledging they’re mired in a deep chasm and stepping back. That he had a considerable hand in them falling in in the first place. This genius figurehead would sooner admonish his underlings before he confessed to any missteps in his unassailable thought process. He doesn’t possess the humility to ground himself and be wholly accountable. It’s not his fault. It never has been. Robert is a writer, editor, and producer.
