Illinois’ high court makes history

While a crocheted serpent took its place on the Capitol rotunda this week and the governor signed a pair of major bills passed in the recent veto session, history was happening on the Illinois Supreme Court.
For the first time in its history, the state’s high court is made up of a majority of women judges.
And it’s by a 5-2 margin.
Justices Elizabeth Rochford and Mary Kay O’Brien were sworn in Monday. The two Democrats were both elected to the high court in November. Justice Joy V. Cunningham, who was appointed to replace retired Justice Anne M. Burke, was sworn in on Dec. 1.
The new justices join Lisa Holder White, who was sworn in as the court’s first Black woman justice on July 7. Cunningham became the second, bringing the number of Black justices on the Supreme Court to three, also a high-water mark for the institution.
Fittingly, the historic court will be led by Chief Justice Mary Jane Theis, who officially assumed that title in October, following Burke and becoming the fourth woman chief in the court’s history.
She’s been on the court since 2010, and ascended to the top spot by the court’s standard process, which gives the gavel to longest-tenured justice who hasn’t yet held it.
She’ll preside over a court on which four of its seven members have been seated for less than six months.
The day after her ceremonial swearing in at the Supreme Court building on Nov. 14, Theis sat down with me for in an interview in the Supreme Court chamber to talk history and the challenges ahead in navigating a young, inexperienced court.
“In my life story, I am not a trailblazer. I am not Mary Ann McMorrow, who was the first woman on our court,” she said. McMorrow was first elected to the court in 1992.
Theis added, however, that while she was a public defender in Cook County early in her law career, she was one of three women in the Cook County criminal bar.
“To say I was the only woman in the room is absolutely true for a very long time in my career, even when I went on the bench,” she said. “There were very, very few women. But there were some. And as we moved along, there were many more behind me.”
Diversity on the bench, Theis said, is both enriching to deliberations and important from a symbolism standpoint.
“It wasn’t that long ago when Charles Freeman was the first African American on this court. He joined the court in 1990,” Theis said. “But he was the only African American up until 2018 and then Scott Neville joined this court.”
Neville remained the only Black justice until he was joined this year by Holder White and Cunningham.
“Suddenly, we’re now going to have three people (on this court) that are people of color,” Theis said. “It says something about our state and something about our court that we’ve evolved to such a place that we can have that diversity.”
For all the historic progress on the court’s diversification, Latino judges continue to be underrepresented on the high court and the appellate courts directly below it. While Illinois is 18 percent Latino, the Illinois Latino Agenda noted in a news release, there’s just one Latino appellate justice and none have ever served on the high court.
Groups like the Puerto Rican Bar Association have also continued to call
on the high court to appoint Latinos to court vacancies at the appellate and Supreme level.
I didn’t directly ask Theis about the lack of Latino representation in state courts, but she did speak to the importance of all Illinoisans being represented.
“In my experience…when there are people with different backgrounds and different life experiences, they bring something to the table, they enrich the discussion, they enrich the opinions that we make,” she said.
While Theis said she’s invigorated by the new court and the experiences and worldviews its new members will bring to the bench, she described the challenges of the court’s turnover as “innumerable.”
“It’s just four new people starting a new job,” she said. “We have to really spend some time talking together, first of all, just about the history and traditions of how the court circulates opinions and real practical things like that. But I’m looking forward to some conversations with the new court as to what they want.”
One place the new justices will bond is the Supreme Court’s dining hall. When in Springfield, the members of the high court stay in living quarters above the court chamber and eat all or most of their meals together with the chief at the head of the table.
“The idea being that you get to know people, and you find out all about them,” Theis said. “And, you know, you talk about the Bears. Or you talk about the weather. Or you talk about whatever you’re going to talk about. And you get to know people and respect people. And then when you go to make decisions, there’s this sense of respect. And when you disagree, it comes from a place of respect.”
There’s also another considerable shift on the court – its 4-3 Democratic majority of recent years has grown to 5-2.
For Theis, that doesn’t mean much.
The only disagreement over party she had with outgoing Republican Justice Michael Burke, she said, was that he’s a White Sox fan and she hails from “the shadows of Wrigley field.”
“There is no partisanship, unless you want to say sports partisanship,” she said.
The 18 decisions released by the court last month back up her claim. None were decided on partisan lines.

Coronavirus-related hospital admissions are climbing again in the United States, with older adults a growing share of U.S. deaths and less than half of nursing home residents up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations.
These alarming signs portend a difficult winter for seniors, which worries 81-yearold nursing home resident Bartley O’Hara, who said he is “vaccinated up to the eyeballs” and tracks coronavirus hospital trends as they “zoom up” for older adults, but remain flat for younger folks.
“The sense of urgency is not universal,” said O’Hara of Washington, D.C. But “if you’re 21, you probably should worry about your granny. We’re all in this together.”
One troubling indicator for seniors: Hospitalizations for people with COVID19 rose by more than 30% in two weeks. Much of the increase is driven by older people and those with existing health problems, said Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The numbers include everyone testing positive, no matter why they are admitted.
When it comes to protecting seniors, “we’re doing a terrible job of that in this country,” said Dr. Eric Topol, head of Scripps Research Translational Institute.
As nursing home leaders redouble efforts to get staff and residents boosted with the new vaccine version, now recommended for those 6 months and older, they face complacency, misinformation and COVID-19 fatigue. They are calling on the White House for help with an “all hands on deck” approach.
Clear messages about what the vaccine can do — and what it can’t — are needed, said Katie Smith Sloan, president of LeadingAge, which represents nonprofit nursing homes.
Breakthrough infections do not mean the vaccine has failed, she said, but that false perception has been hard to fight.
“We need to change our messaging to be accurate about what it does, which is prevent serious illness and hospitalization and death,” Sloan said. “This virus is insidious, and it just keeps popping up everywhere. We just need to be real about that.”
Problems include unwarranted hesitance to prescribe the antiviral pill Paxlovid quickly in the elderly, which prompted five major medical societies to hold a web-based educational session for doctors, “Vax & Pax: How to Keep Your Patients Safe This Winter.”
Easing restrictions, broader immunity in the general population and mixed messages about whether the pandemic is over have softened the sense of threat felt by younger adults. That may be a welcome development for most, but the attitude has seeped into nursing homes in troubling ways.
Getting family consent for vaccinating nursing home residents has become more difficult, nursing home leaders say. Some residents who can give their own consent are declining the shots. Only 23% of nursing home staff are up to date on COVID-19 vaccinations.
Cissy Sanders of Austin, Texas, met multiple obstacles trying to get a booster for her 73-year-old mother, who is in a nursing home. No booster clinic was scheduled. The facility told her they couldn’t find a vaccinator. So she made plans to take her mom to Walgreens later this month.
“I’m concerned about the uptick in hospitalizations and deaths among seniors, and concerned about the lack of urgency at my mother’s nursing home in getting the residents and staff vaccinated” with the latest booster, she said.
Staff and visitors are potential entry points to nursing homes for the virus. The best facilities use a multi-layered approach, protecting residents with masks, screening questions, temperature checks and enhanced infection control.
“What we’ve learned during COVID is that the rate of spread is dependent on the community rate of spread,” said Tina Sandri, CEO of Forest Hills of D.C., a nursing home in the nation’s capital. “I feel safer in my building than anywhere else, including the grocery store.”
Meanwhile, hospitals across the country are seeing an influx of senior patients that Topol calls “pretty alarming.” Nationally, the rate of daily hospital admissions for those 70 and older with confirmed or suspected COVID-19 rose from 8.8 per 100,000 people on Nov. 15, to 12.1 per 100,000 people on Dec. 6, according to statistics from the Department of Health and Human Services. In California and New York, Topol said, hospitalizations for seniors with COVID-19 have already surpassed those during spring and summer omicron waves.
At NYU Langone Health, chief hospital epidemiologist Dr. Michael Phillips said a growing number of seniors are being admitted to his hospital with COVID-19. But the biggest increase he’s seen is in the emergency department, “which is very, very busy” with COVID-19, as well as flu patients.
Dr. Wesley Long, a pathologist at Houston Methodist in Texas, said his hospital has also seen an increase in COVID-19 admissions over the last couple of weeks — and many of the patients are seniors with other health problems. Some are admitted for different illnesses and test positive for COVID-19 in the hospital. The good news? “We haven’t seen an increase in ICU admissions,” he said.
The new combination booster shot, which targets both omicron and the original coronavirus, provides protection against one of the main omicron variants pushing up cases lately: BQ.1.1, which is especially adept at escaping immunity.
“But our booster rates among seniors are pathetically low,” Topol said, with only about a third getting the shot.
Long said health care providers at Houston Methodist promote the booster “every chance we get.” But they don’t administer it to people hospitalized with COVID-19, who are generally told to wait three months after being infected to get it.
Phillips also urges people to get their boosters, especially if they are at risk of serious illness or planning to spend time with someone who is. He said they see many more hospitalizations among people who are unvaccinated.
Deaths, like hospitalizations, are now rising.
The ultimate worry is that more seniors will die. Last spring and summer, death rates declined overall as more people gained protection from vaccination and prior infection. But the share of COVID19–related deaths for the oldest old — adults 85 and older, who make up 2% of the population — grew to 40%.
Over the course of the pandemic, 1 in 5 COVID-19 deaths was among those who were in a long-term care facility.
Dr. Walid Michelen, chief medical officer for seven nonprofit nursing homes operated by the Archdiocese of New York, said Americans need to continue taking the pandemic seriously.
“It’s not going away. It’s here to stay,” he said. “We’re going to get a new variant, and who knows how aggressive that variant is going to be? That keeps me up at night.”

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy pressed Western leaders on Monday to provide more advanced weapons to help his country in its war with Russia, and he repeated his calls for Russian forces to withdraw from occupied areas of Ukraine, suggesting Christmas as a retreat date.
During a video conference, Zelenskky told host Germany and other leaders of the Group of Seven industrial powers: “It would be right to begin the withdrawal of Russian troops from the internationally recognized territory of Ukraine this Christmas. If Russia withdraws its troops from Ukraine, then a reliable cessation of hostilities will be ensured.”
He added: “The answer from Moscow will show what they really want there: either a further confrontation with the world, or finally an end to aggression.”
The Kremlin has rejected all previous appeals to reverse its land grabs in Ukraine. It didn’t immediately respond to this latest one.
The two countries haven’t engaged in any recent peace talks and there is no end in sight for the war, which is in its 10th month and has killed and wounded tens of thousands of people and left dozens of Ukrainian cities and towns in ruins .
Russia has illegally annexed parts of eastern and southern Ukraine, including the Crimean Peninsula in 2014, though it doesn’t fully control all of them. Zelenskyy has said his goal is to reclaim all occupied territory, while Russian President Vladimir Putin insists on solidifying his forces’ control over the areas.
In his address to the G-7, Zelenskyy echoed his prime minister’s Sunday
appeal for long-range missiles, modern tanks, artillery and missile batteries and other high-tech air defense systems to counter Russian attacks that have knocked out electricity and water supplies for millions of Ukrainians. He acknowledged that, “Unfortunately, Russia still has an advantage in artillery and missiles.
Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal told French broadcaster LCI that in addition to making Ukrainians suer, Russia wants to swamp Europe with a new wave of Ukrainian refugees by continuing to strike power stations and other infrastructure. Zelenskyy said protecting Ukraine’s energy facilities from Russian missiles and Iranian drones “will be the protection of the whole of Europe, since with these strikes Russia is provoking a humanitarian and migration catastrophe not only for Ukraine, but also for the entire EU.”
Poland’s president, Andrzej Duda, said his nation already has seen an increased demand to shelter refugees.
“The number of refugees in Poland has risen (recently) to some 3 million. That will probably also mean an increase in their numbers in Germany,” Duda said following talks with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Berlin.
Millions of Ukrainians fled after Russia invaded on Feb. 24. Thousands of people have died and dozens of cities and towns across Ukraine have been reduced to rubble. On Monday, Russia shelling again mostly focused on eastern and southern regions that Putin illegally annexed.
To defend against further strikes, Shmyhal reiterated Ukrainian calls for Patriot surface-to-air missiles — a highly sophisticated system. During the LCI interview, he also asked for more
German and French air-defense systems, resupplies of artillery shells and modern battle tanks.
Organizers in France expect more than 45 nations and 20 international institutions to take part in a Paris conference starting Tuesday to raise and coordinate aid for Ukraine’s water, power, food, health and transportation needs during the tough winter months.
Providing Patriot missiles to Ukraine would mark a major advance in the kinds of defense systems the West is sending to help the country repel Russian aerial attacks. So far, no country has oered them, and such a step would likely mark an escalation in the fight against Russia.
A U.S. ocial told reporters that the Pentagon has no current plans to send Patriot missiles to Ukraine, but that discussions continue. The key issue is that the complex, high-tech system requires significant maintenance and training, said the ocial, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss ongoing operations in Ukraine.
Air defenses were also a topic of a phone call Zelenskyy held Sunday with U.S. President Joe Biden. Zelenskyy, his oce said, told Biden “about 50% of the Ukrainian energy infrastructure was destroyed.”
Biden “highlighted how the U.S. is prioritizing efforts to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense through our security assistance, including the Dec. 9 announcement of $275 million in additional ammunition and equipment that included systems to counter the Russian use of unmanned aerial vehicles,” the White House said.
Russian drone attacks near the Black Sea port of Odesa over the weekend destroyed several energy facilities and left all customers except hospitals, maternity homes, boiler plants and pumping stations without power.
The president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, Mirjana Spoljaric, completed a visit to Ukraine, including Odesa, on Monday. She said she “saw how families have been torn apart and how power cuts and freezing temperatures have increased the suering for too many during this dicult winter.”
The European Union’s foreign ministers gathered Monday in Brussels to discuss fresh sanctions to further punish Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.
Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney sharply condemned “deliberate targeting by Russia of civilians in terms of inflicting
suering on a broad population.” He described Russia’s actions as “a crime, in terms of both aggression and a crime against humanity.”
Slovakia said that in cooperation with Germany, it has opened a center to repair Ukrainian howitzers and air defense systems of Western origin. The center is located inside a military base in the town of Michalovce, some 35 kilometers (22 miles) west of the border with Ukraine, the EU member nation’s Defense Ministry said.
In Ukraine, the eastern Donbas region, which is made up of Donetsk and Luhansk provinces, again has become a focus of intense fighting, particularly around the city of Bakhmut.
Ukrainian ocials said Monday the country’s forces hit a hotel in the Luhansk region that served as a headquarters of the Wagner Group, a private Russian military contractor and mercenary group that has played a prominent role in eastern Ukraine.
The region’s Ukrainian governor, Serhiy Haidai, said hundreds of Russians were killed in the strike on Kadiivka on Sunday. Moscow-backed local ocials in Luhansk confi rmed that a Ukrainian strike destroyed a hotel building in Kadiivka but claimed it was unused.
The Ukrainian mayor of the southeastern town of Melitopol, Ivan Fedorov, reported that Ukraine also attacked a hotel that reportedly housed analysts from Russia’s top security agency, the FSB. Moscow did not comment on that claim, and none of the reports could be independently confi rmed.
Elsewhere on the battlefield, the Ukrainian prosecutor general’s oce said two civilians were killed and 10 were wounded in Russia’s shelling of the town of Hirnyk in the Donetsk region.
Kherson Gov. Yaroslav Yanushevych said a Russian strike on the southern city of the same name, which Ukraine reclaimed a month ago, killed two civilians and left five wounded Monday. He said the Russian shelling hit residential buildings and damaged power lines. Yanushevych urged city residents to move to shelters.

NEW YORK (AP) — After scandal and boycott plunged the Hollywood Foreign Press Association into disarray and knocked its annual award show o television for a year, the Golden Globes geared up Monday for its return by showering nominations on the black comedy “The Banshees of Inisherin” and the multiverse mash-up “Everything Everywhere all at Once.”
In an attempt to restore early-morning fanfare to the awards-season tradition, nominations were read from the Beverly Hilton and aired live on NBC’s “Today” show. Hollywood, which spurned the HFPA after 2021 reports detailed the body’s lack of diversity and rampant ethical indiscretions, once again woke up to news of nominees — though this time the response was much more muted. Martin McDonagh’s feuding friends tale “The Banshees of Inisherin” led
with eight nominations, including nods for actors Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Kerry Condon and Barry Keoghan. Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert’s existential action comedy “Everything Everywhere all at Once” came in second with six nominations, including nods for Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis.
The Globes spread nominations around to a number of Oscar favorites (Steven Spielberg’s “The Fabelmans,” Todd Fields’ “Tár”) while also elevating big-budget spectacles like “Top Gun: Maverick” and “Avatar: The Way of Water.” Each, along with Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis,” landed nominations for best fi lm, drama.
The nominees for best fi lm, comedy or musical, were: “The Banshees of Inisherin,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” “Babylon” and “Triangle of Sadness.”
The HFPA has historically been derided
— sometimes even by their own hosts — for less diverse nominees and o-thewall picks. The fi lm nominees Monday included eight people of color among the 30 acting individual acting nominees. No woman was nominated for best director, with nods instead going to Spielberg, Cameron, McDonagh, Luhrmann and Kwan and Scheinert, the fi lmmaking duo known as “the Daniels.” None of the films up for best picture in either category was directed by women.
Among the nominees for best actor in a drama is Brendan Fraser. Fraser has said he won’t attend the Globes after he said he was groped in 2003 by Philip Berk, a former HFPA member and former president of the organization.
On the TV side, the ABC public school comedy “Abbott Elementary” led with five nominations, including best series, musical or comedy, and nods for its stars Quinta Brunson, Janelle James and Tyler James Williams. “The Crown,” “Dahmer — Monster: The Jerey Dahmer Story,” “Only Murders in the Building,” “Pam & Tommy” and “White Lotus” all came away with four nominations.
The show, which will be telecast Jan. 10 and hosted by stand-up comedian Jerrod Carmichael, is trying to mount a comeback. A Los Angeles Times investigation in early 2021 found that the HFPA then had no Black members, a revelation compounded by other allegations of ethical improprieties. Many stars and studios said they would boycott the show. Tom Cruise returned his three Globes.
Whether Cruise, overlooked in the lead actor category, chooses to attend this year will be much discussed ahead of the ceremony. His “Top Gun: Maverick,” the year’s biggest box-oce smash, is nominated for two awards: best fi lm, drama, and best song. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer was among the first to cheer the fi lm’s nominations with a statement of thanks on Monday.
“Top Gun: Maverick” wasn’t the only blockbuster welcomed by the Globes. James Cameron’s upcoming “Avatar: The Way of Water” scored nods for both best fi lm, drama, and best director for Cameron. “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” snagged two nominations, for Angela Bassett’s supporting performance and Rihanna’s “Lift Me Up.”
Arguably no fi lm got a bigger boost than Damien Chazelle’s silent-fi lm-era epic “Babylon.” The fi lm doesn’t open in theaters until later this month, but came away with five nominations, including nods for Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt and
Diego Calva.
Other nominees across categories included Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Ana de Armas (“Blonde”), Jeremy Pope (“The Inspection”), Ana Taylor-Joy (“The Menu”), Emma Thompson (“Good Luck to You, Leo Grande”), Dolly De Leon (“Triangle of Sadness”) and Eddie Redmayne (“The Good Nurse”).
While enthusiastic statements and social-media reactions often ensue, few nominees publicly celebrated in the fi rst hours after nominations. Social accounts for many of the fi lms, though, did promote their Globe nods.
NBC last year canceled the telecast for this past January. Instead, the Golden Globes were quietly held in a Beverly Hilton ballroom without any stars in attendance. Winners were announced on Twitter.
Over the last year and a half, the HFPA has enacted reforms and revamped its membership to now number 96 people, including six Black voting members.
NBC has praised the HFPA for its ongoing reforms but also reworked its contract: The network will broadcast the 2023 show in a one-year deal, making January’s show a possible make-or-break moment. NBC also shifted the telecast to a Tuesday, from the Globes’ previous Sunday night perch, and will also stream the ceremony on Peacock.
Known for its boozy, celebrity-stued broadcast, the Globes long ranked as one of the most-watched non-sporting live programs of the year. But ratings, like for most award shows, have recently slid for the Globes. The 2021 show, held amid the pandemic, was watched by 6.9 million, down from 18 million the year prior.
The HFPA sold the Globes earlier this year to Todd Boehly’s Eldridge Industries, which is turning it from a nonprofit to a for-profit venture. The fi rm also owns Dick Clark Productions, which produces the Globes, and the award show’s longtime home, the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.
For Hollywood studios, the Globes can be a useful marketing tool that helps drive audiences to contenders ahead of the Academy Awards, which will be held March 12. In the past year, no other awards body has emerged as a Globes replacement. With modest ticket sales thus far for many of the fall’s most acclaimed dramas, some in the industry will surely hope to see the Globes restored to their former luster.

DOHA, Qatar (AP) — It’s a rare moment in the Middle East when the public’s voice roars louder than those of the governments. But Morocco’s surprise string of wins at the World Cup in Qatar have stirred a joy and pride among Arab fans that have, at least for a moment, eclipsed the region’s many political divisions.
Perhaps most striking is the love fest between Palestinians and the Moroccan team, despite the Moroccan government’s normalization of ties with Israel as part of the 2020 Abraham Accords.
The Moroccan team waved a Palestinian flag after its victory over Spain last week, thrilling Palestinians. Throughout the tournament, the Palestinian fl ag has been unfurled all over, carried by Arab fans and some non-Arabs — so much so that the running joke is that Palestine is the 33rd team at the World Cup.
Palestinians see it as a sign Arab public support still runs strong for their cause even as they feel Arab governments have abandoned them, with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Sudan also normalizing ties with Israel.
“I didn’t expect this. It’s spreading the word and showing that Palestine is not just a political issue, it’s a human issue,” said Ahmed Sabri, a young Palestinian in Doha after watching Morocco’s win over Portugal on Saturday. He had the Palestinian flag draped over his back.
His Egyptian friend, Yasmeen Hossam,
wrapped in a Moroccan flag, said, “This is the fi rst World Cup in the Middle East and the fi rst one FOR the Middle East.”
Morocco is the fi rst Arab and African team to make it this far in a World Cup, playing a semifinal Wednesday against France. Part of the Arab embrace of the team has come simply from having something to celebrate in a region where many countries are mired in economic crises, armed confl icts and political repression.
For some, it’s gratifying to see their culture displayed in a positive way on a massive international stage — whether it’s the Moroccan team doing a quick Muslim prayer during huddles or Morocco winger Soufiane Boufal dancing with his veiled mother on the pitch after the quarterfinal victory over Portugal.
“We are all clinging to this Moroccan team as some sort of source of hope and happiness in a time where I think we all could really use some good news,” said Danny Hajjar, a Lebanese-American music writer.
The excitement with each victory has crossed boundaries and political divisions.
Algerians joined in, even though their government cut ties with Morocco last year. The two countries have a long-running confl ict over Western Sahara, which Morocco annexed in 1975 and where Algeria long supported Sahrawis in the Polisario Front seeking independence. Algeria was angered by the U.S. recognition of Moroccan sovereignty in the
territory in exchange for normalization with Israel.
At Morocco and Algeria’s often tense border, fans lined up on both sides and cheered to each other across no-man’s land, videos on social media showed. In the French city of Nice, diaspora Algerians and Tunisians joined Moroccans in cafes and in each others’ homes for the matches, setting o fi reworks in celebration on the famed Mediterranean boardwalk Promenade des Anglais.
In contrast, Algerian state TV has not even reported on Morocco’s wins, leaving them out of daily World Cup reports.
For Palestinians, the games have been a breath of fresh air. The peace process with Israel has long mouldered in a jar on the shelf; a far-right government in Israel is poised to take oce; tensions have risen in recent months with several deadly Palestinian attacks in Israel, near daily Israeli raids in the West Bank and increasing harassment by Jewish settlers.
At the same time, many Palestinians feel they have been forgotten by Arab governments; besides the Abraham Accords, countries like Egypt and Jordan have largely gone silent on the Palestinians’ future while increasing cooperation with Israel.
World Cup host Qatar has been a vocal supporter of Palestinians and a major economic lifeline for the Gaza Strip, governed by the Hamas militant group and under Egyptian and Israeli closure for years.
Ahmed Abu Suleiman, a soccer coach from the Shati refugee camp in Gaza City, said he feels proud seeing the Palestinian flag so much among fans in Doha.
“Regimes change, but the people remain unchanged. They are thinking about the Palestinian issue, about the Palestinian wound,” he said.
Thousands of people packed a Gaza City sporting hall with a large screen donated by Qatar to watch the Morocco-Portugal match. Many held posters showing the Palestinian and Morocco flags and the slogan, “One People, One Country.”
“It’s an indescribable feeling. I swear it’s as if it’s Palestinians that were playing,” said one fan, Ibrahim al-Lilli. “All of us are Morocco.”
Scenes of jubilation also took place across the West Bank after the win. In east Jerusalem, two men stood atop the Old City’s Damascus gate holding a red Moroccan fl ag while hundreds below cheered and chanted, “God, Morocco, Jerusalem is Arab.”
The Moroccan victory also reverberated in Israel, home to hundreds of thousands of Jews of Moroccan descent. Many Israelis, including ones attending in Doha, were rooting for the team.
Avi Nachmani, a spokesman for the Israel-based World Federation of Moroccan Jewry, said many Israelis of Moroccan origin maintain a strong connection to their roots. “This flourishing of the team really adds to the anity,” he said.
He said scenes of players celebrating with their mothers reminded him of the way Moroccan Jews honor their parents.
“They don’t forget where they came from,” he said.
But some were dismayed by shows of the Palestinian flag. In Israel and east Jerusalem, police move quickly to tear down any display of the flag, though it is not specifically banned.
Rudy Rochman, an Israeli of Moroccan descent, said he felt a connection to the Moroccan team. But he called the unfurling of the Palestinian flag “intentionally oensive to Israel.”
On social media, some said Arab enthusiasm for Morocco erases the large ethnic Berber population that is equally if not more a part of the country’s identity. Other voices said Morocco’s hold on Western Sahara and discrimination felt by many Sahrawis were lost in the cheers.
Lebanon may be the most complicated, as sectarian divisions seep into soccer loyalties. While Lebanese are overwhelmingly Brazil or Germany fans, many have adopted Morocco and rejoiced in the streets after the win over Portugal.
The semifi nal with France is more divisive. Much of the Arab world sees a chance for a former colony to give its one-time colonizer its comeuppance. But some in Lebanon feel cultural anity with France, particularly Christians.
After the Portugal game, scues broke out in Beirut after a group of Morocco fans from a Muslim-majority neighborhood rode through a Christian area on motorcycles, some hoisting Palestinian flags and chanting “God is the greatest.” They were accosted by a group of men from the area who saw the convoy as a sectarian provocation.
Given the history of divisions and the 15-year civil war, the music writer Hajjar said he wouldn’t be surprised if there was more street friction around the semifinal. But, he said, he was “hoping that we can all just enjoy the match for what it will be.”
Fruit tree pruning is now possible in Northern Illinois. Once we reach mid-December and the trees have been in dormancy for some weeks, it’s now possible to prune your fruit trees. Apples, cherries, pears, plums, and peaches can be pruned from now until March 1st. I know many growers that wait until the end of January to begin but if you have a small orchard, you could go ahead and begin pruning. If you are new to pruning, whether you’ve planted new trees in 2022 or inherited fruit trees, there are some basic approaches to consider.
A fruit tree planted since 2021 may not need to be pruned for 3-4 years. This goes against some of the guides you see that encourage pruning early on and yet pruning is removing future fruit. Delaying pruning for 3-4 years will not necessarily lead to long-term tree problems and you will get fruit sooner. What you should do these first 3-4 years is to work on training and getting the tree into the shape it needs to be. This is done via spreaders, weights, and other methods. Apples and pear trees should have a Christmas tree shape or central leader. Peaches, plums, and cherries do best with an open-center/ vase shape.
Focus on bringing in light. Any branches or shape that is leading to substantial shade is going to reduce your fruit load long-term. This may mean removing branches that are crossing or a dominant branch that shades many other branches. Vertical branches tend to dominant unpruned fruit trees. These branches cast shade and do not often have fruit on them.
You should only attempt to remove 30-40% of the branches each season. If you remove more than this, the tree may not successfully seal up the cuts you have made before it moves out of dormancy in spring. For young trees, 30-40% is not much while a large tree may mean
A recent release from the Sun Day Campaign highlights positive data regarding renewable energy from the U. S Energy Information Agency. Installed solar capacity increased by 25.7%, wind by 18.6% and hydropower by 8%.
Electrical generation by renewable sources increased by 15.4% during the year. Biomass, geothermal, hydropower. solar and wind provided nearly 23% of the nation’s electrical generation during the fi rst three quarters of 2022. Over the past five years the mix of renewable energy sources has moved from fourth place to second place while coal fell to third place and nuclear fourth place, A slowdown in generation by wind and hydropower could occur in the last quarter of the year leaving renewable sources somewhat short of EIA’s prediction of supplying 22% of U.S. electrical supply in 2022.
With anticipated funds from the Inflation Reduction Act there should be an accelerated transition to renewable energy sources. Installations should increase in Illinois as funding of renewable energy and e ciency from the passage of CEJA continues.
Vaclav Smil, a retired professor from the Faculty of Environment at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, has written over 40 books, most of which address energy, population and resource issues. For him a major question facing humans is how can we live sustainably on the earth.
His message is not well received by advocates of a rapid energy transition to cleaner energy sources. He wants climate activists to be more realistic in their vision for a more sustainable energy future and align their expectations to be consistent with science. Steve Hanley wrote a series of articles on Smil in Cleantechnica.com. Smil is skeptical that there can be a rapid transition to clean energy. He points out “that coal, oil and natural gas still supply 90% of the world’s primary energy.” Even with the growth in renewable energy technologies, the global proportion of energy from fossil fuels has increased since 2000.
The greatest challenge in the industrial sector will be replacing fossil carbon currently used in the production of iron, cement, fertilizer and plastic. He and others call for reducing demand for energy through conservation and for pricing energy to reflect its real costs to society, including its release of
greenhouse gases. He calls for the end of unchecked economic growth and reduced consumption of materials and energy. The increasing size of houses and the widespread popularity of inecient SUVs exemplify how energy consumption has increased in recent years.
Smil calls attention to the issue of scale. It is one thing to achieve a transition for a nation of one million people costing a few billion dollars but it is an entirely dierent challenge to transition a nation of one billion people costing trillions of dollars. Additionally, the target of a 45% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 leaves the unrealistic deadline of less than eight years to reach the goal while carbon emissions are still rising. Relying on carbon sequestering to reach the 2030 goal is also doubted since the technology is only in the early stages of development.
Smil points out that a massive increase in renewable energy production will require a national grid which does not currently exist. He also points out that the benefits of a transition away from fossil fuels would impact people living in 2070 requiring sacrifices from today’s population. He doubts the human brain is wired to think beyond the short term. In addition, existing systemic and institutional inertia along with vested interests
a lot of wood is being removed. I work with backyard growers that sometimes need more than 30-40%. If this is your situation, it may take 2-3 years to fully remove all the branches you need to.
Fruit tree pruning is about acceptance. You can prune the right method and remove the correct branches but the tree is not always going to do what you want it to. If you’ve inherited 25-30 foot tall trees, it is probably unrealistic to expect to be pruning trees into shapes that they should be. I’ll discuss more fruit tree pruning next week.
Grant is the Local Food and Smalls Farms Educator of the University of Illinois Extension.
are likely to resist the change.
He describes the overall situation as unprecedented and illustrates it by pointing to the challenge of having Russia, China and the U.S all sign on to the carbon reductions called for by 2030.
Smil acknowledges that people are trying to do the right thing regarding climate but multiple actions are needed on energy, food and materials. The war in Ukraine has people rethinking the role of energy in society, but achieving necessary changes are a bigger challenge than realized. Energy transitions take far more time than envisioned in the existing target dates.
The article includes a response to Smil’s concerns by energy optimist Mark Jacobson which highlights the progress already made and future benefits of energy e ciency, renewable energy, pollution reductions, cost savings and increased employment. His response focuses on the ability to meet stated goals.
These are contrasting expectations for the future. Whichever one proves more accurate will be revealed over time. Overlooked in the pursuit of cleaner energy sources is the potential of energy rationing as a means to secure a sustainable economy. We had successful rationing programs in the 1970s and during WW II; they could be implemented again.
