SPRINGFIELD – Senate Minority Leader-elect John Curran will take over a caucus that’s more than doubled in size by the majority-party Democrats.
His goal: “Bring balance to state government.”
“Because we’re going to produce better results with that balance for working families throughout all Illinois commu nities,” Curran said in an interview with Capitol News Illinois on Wednesday, one day after being chosen as the GOP’s next minority leader.
The Republican from southwest suburban Downers Grove has served in the General Assembly since 2017. In January, he’ll take over for Minority Leader Dan McConchie, a Hawthorn Woods Republican who was chosen for the post in November 2020, but whose caucus chose a new route by electing Curran this week.
“There’s no pivot,” Curran said. “We all sit at one table, this is a few people changing seats, just a couple of different roles as we go forward. But, you know, really, this is about us being a unified caucus.”
Curran brings a track record of working with Democrats to his leadership role as the caucus looks to navigate a likely 40-19 Democratic majority.
“Our obstacles are the lack, at times, of the majority party to respect and include the minority party in a meaningful manner in public policy discussions,” Curran said. “I, as an individual legislator, have found ways to have some meaningful participation in that process and getting members of the other side of the aisle to respect my policy objectives and getting them included in the ultimate product. We need to do that as a caucus.”
He was the lone Republican standing with Democrats in Springfield when the governor signed a health care reform backed by the Illinois Legislative Black Caucus in 2021. He was also a lead voice in an effort to drastically curtail allowable emissions of ethylene oxide in Illinois, a cancer-causing gas used in medical supply sterilization that’s been tied to an elevated cancer risk in the Willowbrook
area.
“Members of both sides of the aisle worked collaboratively to solve that public health crisis,” he said. “If you’re not safe in your community, either from a health perspective, or a public safety, personal safety perspective, you know, we’re failing you.”
When Democrats worked to pass a transformative energy policy, the Climate and Equitable Jobs Act, that subsidizes renewable and nuclear generators while aiming to take fossil fuel producers offline in the next two decades, Curran was one of two Republicans casting a “yes” vote.
“Reliable, sustainable energy is one of the imperatives that we have,” he said. “We had to have those nuclear plants on. And that’s where I came down to that issue. We need nuclear energy in the state of Illinois. It is clean. It is reliable. And quite frankly, that is one of the large advantages we have.”
Other advantages, he said, are trans portation infrastructure, clean drinking water, low-cost reliable energy and a highly educated workforce.
“We have some great benefits that attract employers to Illinois,” he said. “We have a lot of promise, but we also have some regulatory matters we have to address to continue to grow and attract more investment and more jobs to Illinois.”
A former assistant Cook County state’s attorney and DuPage County Board vice chairman, he was the lead Senate GOP voice on ethics reforms passed in 2021. While House Republicans quickly called news conferences to call that bill watered down and ineffective, Curran at the time appeared with Democrats and spoke to reporters individually about how he worked with the majority party to strengthen the bill.
He has also been an opponent of the criminal justice reform known as the SAFE-T Act, arguing that while he’s not opposed to ending cash bail, he believes the system that will replace it has several shortcomings.
“This was an extreme piece of legisla tion,” he said. “It was weighted greatly towards the extremes of their base and it jeopardizes public safety. Republican involvement in that process will help balance that out. There’s no reason we can’t be fair and just and at the same time protect public safety.”
Aside from a message of balance, he said he’d be active in Republican fund raising, aiming to diversify donations from just one or two megadonors. In recent election cycles, the two major funders of the state GOP were shipping magnate Richard Uihlein and hedge fund billionaire Ken Griffin, who recently moved his business to Florida.
While Uihlein’s money has frequently been used to elevate the party’s more conservative voices, such as state Sen. Darren Bailey, who lost the election for governor by a wide margin to incumbent Democrat JB Pritzker, Curran said it helped the Senate GOP.
“Mr. Uihlein, we were very fortunate, invested heavily in the Illinois Senate Republican candidates, and these were not extreme candidates. These were candidates modeled to represent the districts they were running in,” he said. “Certainly, we welcome Mr. Uihlein’s investment in our cause, but we certainly, as we look forward, need to diversify our fundraising.”
Curran’s interview came one day after former President Donald Trump announced another bid for the White House in 2024. The former president, who is a subject of multiple criminal investigations, lost Illinois in both of his elections by 900,000 to more than 1 million votes.
But Curran said he didn’t think Trump’s announcement would make his job harder.
“Any national figure should not frame who the Illinois Republican Party is to our citizens that we seek to represent,” he said. “So, we need to be strong enough and we are strong enough to present ourselves in a manner that that leads to meaningful participation in the state.”
That includes reframing the abortion issue, Curran said.
“We have to do a better job on the abortion messaging,” he said. “You know, the reality is, what else can we do here in Illinois? The laws of Illinois are more weighted towards guarantees of the rights to have an abortion than any other state in the nation. There’s no further to go.”

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — When the power is out, as it so often is, the high-rise apart ment overlooking Ukraine’s war-torn capital feels like a deathtrap. No lights, no water, no way to cook food. And the risk of not being able to escape from the 21st floor in time should a Russian missile strike. Even when electricity comes back, it’s never on for long.
“Russian strikes are plunging Ukraine into the Stone Age,” says Anastasia Pyrozhenko. In a recent 24-hour spell, her 26-story high-rise only had power for half an hour. She says the “military living conditions” have driven her and her husband from their apartment.
“Our building is the highest in the area and is a great target for Russian missiles, so we left our apartment for our parents’ place and are preparing for the worst winter of our lives,” said the 25-year-old.
The situation in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, and other major cities has deteriorated drastically following the largest missile attack on the country’s power grid on Tuesday. Ukrainian state-owned grid operator Ukrenergo reported that 40% of Ukrainians were experiencing diffi culties, due to damage to at least 15 major energy hubs across the country.
Warning that electricity outages could last anywhere from several hours to several days, the network said that “resilience and courage are what we need this winter.”
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, too, stressed the need to be ready and resilient in the face of a potential blackout: “Worst case scenario. Actually, I don’t like to talk about that, but I have to be prepared if we (do not) have electricity, blackout, no water, no heating, no services and no communication,” Klitschko told the AP on Friday.
Ukrenergo said in a statement that “thousands of kilometers of key high-voltage lines are not working,” affecting the entire country.
It published a picture of a transformer station that was destroyed by a Russian missile, leaving around 400,000 people without power. According to the report, “there are dozens of such transformers in the power system now. This equipment cannot be replaced quickly.”
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said after last week’s strikes that more than 10 million Ukrainians were left without electricity; by Sunday, he said some areas had seen improvements.
“The restoration of networks and tech
nical supply capabilities, the de-mining of power transmission lines, repairs — everything goes on round the clock,” Zelenskyy said in his nightly address.
Blackouts were scheduled Sunday night in 15 regions and the city of Kyiv, he said. Ukrenergo said there would be scheduled outages in every region on Monday.
A sharp cold snap and the first snow have significantly complicated the situa tion in Kyiv, where temperatures are often below freezing in winter months. The cold forces people to turn on their heaters, which drastically increases the load on the grid and makes power outages longer. In light of the dropping temperatures, the Kyiv authorities announced they were setting up communal heating points.
In the city of 3 million people, 528 emergency points have been identified. Here, residents will be able to keep warm, drink tea, recharge their phones and get any necessary help. The heating points will be equipped with autonomous power sources, as well as special boiler rooms.
Mayor Klitschko, too, spoke of measures taken to prepare for energy outages with the onset of colder tempera tures: “We prepared and we (asked for) electric generators (from) our partners, which they send to us. For this case, we have a reserve of diesel, (of) oil. We have a lot of warm stuff. We have medication.”
Many residents in Kyiv have begun to leave boxes of food, flashlights and power banks in elevators, in case anyone gets stuck in one for a long time. Due to the lack of electricity, public transport is disrupted, many small shops cannot operate, and some medical institutions can only work to a limited capacity.
Dentist Viktor Turakevich said that he was forced to postpone his patients’ appointments “for an indefinite time” because without electricity his central Kyiv clinic cannot function even during the day, and the generator will only arrive in a few weeks.
“We cannot accept patients even with acute toothache, people have to suffer and wait a long time, but the light comes on only for a few hours a day,” Turakevich said. “Generator prices have skyrocketed, but even with money, they are not easy to come by.”
Most hospitals in Kyiv have already received generators and there are no power outages there yet. The Oleksandrivska hospital, the largest and oldest one in the center of Kyiv, reported that it had not canceled elective surgeries because the hospital had received electric generators from France. Generators have also been supplied to educational insti
tutions and social services.
“Such facilities are a priority for us, and most of them are equipped with autonomous energy sources,” Ukrenergo head Volodymyr Kudrytskyi said on Friday. However, many schools in Kyiv have endured significant disruption to the learning process, with a lack of electricity meaning internet outages that make remote learning near impossible.
Yaroslav, age 8, stopped attending his school in the Vynohradar district of Kyiv after a rocket attack blew out all the windows of the school and damaged a shelter there.
“Most of the children studied remotely, but now it is no longer possible to do this,” said Yaroslav’s mother, Olena, who asked for her last name to be withheld for safety reasons, in a phone interview. “We are trying to protect children from the horrors of war, but the cold and the lack of power greatly hinder this.”
Analysts say that Russian rocket attacks on the energy industry do not affect the successful advance of the Ukrainian army in the south and the situation on the battlefield in general.
“The Russians cannot win on the battlefield, and therefore they use cold and darkness as a weapon against the civilian population, trying to sow panic, depression and demoralize Ukrainians,” Volodymyr Fesenko, an analyst at the Penta Center think tank in Kyiv, told the AP.
Russian President Vladimir Putin “is suffering military defeats and is in dire need of a military pause, which is why he is forcing Zelenskyy into negotiations in such a wild way,” he said.
The analyst believes the Kremlin is also trying to put pressure on Western support for Ukraine, as the EU and the U.S. will be forced to expand aid packages to a freezing Kyiv amid growing domestic troubles.
“Putin is trying to make the price of supporting Ukraine too high — this applies both to money and to a possible new flow of refugees to Europe from a freezing country,” Fesenko said.
Pyrozhenko, having left her high-rise, moved in with her mother in a small apartment in Kyiv, now home to five people. The family has a wooden house in a village near Kyiv and has already prepared firewood in case of a forced evacuation.
“We understand that winter can be long, cold and dark, but we are ready to endure,” Pyrozhenko said. “We are ready to live without light, but not with the Russians.”
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Railroad engineers accepted their deal with the railroads that will deliver 24% raises but conductors rejected theirs, threatening the health of the economy just before the holidays and casting more doubt on whether the industry will be able to resolve the labor dispute before next month’s deadline without the help of Congress.
Even the threat of a work stoppage could tangle the nation’s supply chain as railroads will freeze shipments of chemicals and other goods that could create hazards if disrupted midway to their destination.
A split vote Monday from the two biggest railroad unions follows the rejection by three other unions of their deals with the railroads that the Biden administration helped broker before the original strike deadline in September. Seven smaller unions have approved the five-year deal that, on top of the 24% raise, includes $5,000 in bonuses.
But many union members have voted to reject the contracts because, they say, they fail to address demanding schedules and quality of life issues for employees.
All 12 must approve the contracts to prevent a strike that could cripple supply chains and hamper a stressed U.S. econ omy still emerging from the pandemic.
The Retail Industry Leaders Association said a rail strike “would cause enormous disruption to the flow of goods nation wide” although retail stores are well stocked for the crucial holiday shopping season.
“Fortunately, this year’s holiday gifts have already landed on store shelves. But an interruption to rail transporta tion does pose a significant challenge to getting items like perishable food products and e-commerce shipments delivered on time, and it will undoubtedly add to the inflationary pressures already hitting the U.S. economy,” said Jess Dankert with the group that represents more than 200 major retailers.
The unions that rejected their deals agreed to return to the bargaining table to try to hash out a new agreement before a new strike deadline early next month. But those talks have deadlocked because the railroads refuse to consider adding paid sick time to what was already offered.
It appears increasingly likely that Congress will have to step in to settle
the dispute. Lawmakers have the power to impose contract terms if both sides can’t reach an agreement. Hundreds of business groups have urged Congress and President Joe Biden to be ready to intervene if needed.
Workers frustrated with the demand ing schedules and deep job cuts in the industry pushed to reject these contracts because they don’t resolve workers’ key quality-of-life concerns. The deals for the engineers and conductors did include a promise to try to improve the scheduling of regular days off and negotiate the details of those schedules further at each railroad. The unions that represent engi neers and conductors also received three unpaid days off a year to tend to medical needs as long they were scheduled at least 30 days in advance.
The railroads also lost out on their bid to cut crew sizes down to one person as part of the negotiations. But the conduc tors in the Transportation Division of the International Association of Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers union still narrowly rejected the deal with roughly 51% voting against it. A smaller division of the SMART-TD union that represents about 1,300 yardmasters did approve the deal.
“The ball is now in the railroads’ court. Let’s see what they do. They can settle this at the bargaining table,” SMART-TD President Jeremy Ferguson said. “But, the railroad executives who constantly complain about government interference and regularly bad-mouth regulators and Congress now want Congress to do the bargaining for them.”
The railroads maintain that the deals with the unions should closely follow the recommendations made this summer by a special panel of arbitrators Biden appointed. That’s part of the reason why they don’t want to offer paid sick time. Plus, the railroads say the unions have agreed over the years to forgo paid sick time in favor of higher pay and strong short-term disability benefits.
The unions say it is long overdue for the railroads to offer paid sick time to workers, and the pandemic highlighted the need for it.
The group that negotiates on behalf of the railroads said Monday that the unions that rejected their deals shouldn’t expect to receive more than the Presidential Emergency Board of arbitra tors recommended. The National Carriers Conference Committee said businesses
could start to be affected by the threat of a strike even before the deadline because railroads will start curtailing shipments of dangerous chemicals and perishable cargo days ahead of the deadline.
“A national rail strike would severely impact the economy and the public. Now, the continued, near-term threat of one will require that freight railroads and passenger carriers soon begin to take responsible steps to safely secure the network in advance of any deadline,” the railroads said.
It’s unclear what Congress might do given the deep political divisions in Washington D.C. and a single lawmaker could hold up a resolution. But the head of the Association of American Railroads trade group, Ian Jefferies, said “if the
remaining unions do not accept an agree ment, Congress should be prepared to act and avoid a disastrous $2 billion a day hit to our economy.”
Republicans may try to impose a deal that includes only what the Presidential Emergency Board recommended while Democrats who still narrowly hold control of both the House and Senate during this lame-duck period might be willing to force the railroads to make additional concessions.
The unions that voted Monday repre sent more than half of the roughly 115,000 rail workers involved in the contract dispute with Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern, BNSF, Kansas City Southern, CSX and other railroads.
Dems claim electoral mandate for broad criminal justice reform, GOP claims they’re ‘frozen out’
BY JERRY NOWICKI CAPITOL NEWS ILLINOIS JNOWICKI@CAPITOLNEWSILLINOIS.COMSPRINGFIELD – Changes may yet come to the SAFE-T Act criminal justice reform before its Jan. 1 eective date, but some of its major proponents in the General Assembly said the results of the Nov. 8 general election have signified that the ship has sailed drastic amendments to it.
“I will say, when it came to the idea of gutting it, that was a bipartisan thing that was real, and I will acknowledge that,” Sen. Robert Peters, D-Chicago, said at a news conference Tuesday. “But what I will say is that, after Tuesday, the main thing is to make sure it’s technical and we can implement it the right way.”
Long a talking point of Republicans in a contentious election cycle, the SAFE-T Act is a wide-ranging reform that passed in January 2021. One of its final provisions to take eect is a measure that will end cash bail, known as the Pretrial Fairness Act, beginning Jan. 1.
Peters said Wednesday there’s no appetite among advocates to push that
date back further.
The PFA eliminates cash as a determinant for pretrial release, replacing it with a system that gives judges authority to detain individuals accused of certain crimes while they await trial.
The law’s standards regarding when a judge can order pretrial detention have been among the most hotly contested provisions in the run-up to the November elections.
As written, the law creates a presumption in favor of pretrial release for lower-level oenders, including most charged with misdemeanors and low-level, non-violent felonies such as possession of small amounts of drugs. Ocers would be instructed to release those individuals with a citation and a notice to appear in court within 21 days, but they would still have the authority to arrest the individual and take them into custody if they deem them to be a threat to the public safety.
Advocates say that presumption is necessary to avoid overworking the courts, giving them more time to focus on pretrial detention cases involving dangerous or potentially dangerous individuals. The law also gives the accused individual the right to an attorney begin-
ning with their first appearance in court.
Detainable oenses include non-probationable forcible felonies such as murder, aggravated arson and residential burglary; domestic violence oenses where the abuse victim is a family or household member, or if the defendant was subject to the terms of an order of protection; gun oenses; and several specified sex oenses.
Persons deemed to be “planning or attempting to intentionally evade prosecution” may also be detained pretrial under what is called the “willful fl ight” standard if they’ve been charged with a crime greater than a Class 4 felony – such as property crimes, aggravated DUI and driving on a revoked license.
An amendment backed by Sen. Scott Bennett, a Democrat from Champaign, would widen judicial authority to detain a defendant charged with any crime if the court believes they are a serious risk of skipping trial, pose a danger to the community, or are likely to threaten a potential witness or juror.
It would also remove language regarding the “presumption in favor of pretrial release.”
Domestic violence victim advocates that helped draft the proposal have argued that those sections of Bennett’s amendment would gut the original law’s intent by keeping the court system clogged with low-level non-violent oenders.
Peters on Wednesday did not directly criticize Bennett’s proposal, contained in Senate Bill 4228, as “gutting” the PFA, but he said he disagreed with it.
What changes will be made, however, is unclear as negotiations continue.
“I mean, the idea is that we will have conversations and negotiate,” Peters said. “I think one of the issues that happened for quite some time is that more people focused on trying to repeal the SAFE-T Act or gut the SAFE-T Act. And they didn’t engage in an authentic and fair manner when it comes to what’s going to happen with this bill. But like I said, we have our door open to have a conversation.”
Repealing the SAFE-T Act is something that new House Minority Leader-elect Tony McCombie said was still the preferred route of her caucus in a news conference Wednesday.
Senate Minority Leader-elect John
Curran, meanwhile, said in an interview with Capitol News Illinois that his caucus has generally been “frozen out” of negotiations on the SAFE-T Act’s cash bail provisions.
“So the Democrats decided to go it alone on this issue two years ago,” Curran, of Downers Grove, said of the initial bill’s passage in January 2021. “And they placated the extremes of their base. And what they got was an extreme product that has caused nothing but divisiveness in this state over the last two years on the issues of balancing civil liberties and public safety.”
Curran, in a previous interview with Capitol News Illinois, said he wasn’t opposed to ending cash bail, but he saw several shortcomings in the system that will replace it, including the detention standards and contradictory language in dierent parts of the bill.
He’d prefer a model adopted in New Jersey – something Peters and others have rejected – that would give judges wider discretion to detain and allow cash bail in certain circumstances.
Thus far, however, Curran said the ongoing discussions in the Senate have included three state’s attorneys and members of two law enforcement groups, but not Senate Republicans.
“There’s no reason we can’t be fair, and at the same time, protect public safety,” Curran said. “That’s where this needs to ultimately land. If they’re not going to get there on their own, and clearly they’re not, they’re at some point going to have to involve us.”
While Peters wouldn’t comment on a combined lawsuit from about 60 state’s attorneys against the SAFE-T Act, Curran said he expected it to eventually come before the Illinois Supreme Court.
“But we as the legislature have an opportunity to actually be responsible on this issue and solve that here, so this litigation becomes unnecessary,” Curran said.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — The man suspected of killing five people and injuring others at a gay bar in Colorado Springs is facing murder and hate crime charges, according to online court records obtained Monday.
Anderson Lee Aldrich, 22, faces five murder charges and five charges of committing a bias-motivated crime causing bodily injury, the records show.
A law enforcement official said the suspect used an AR-15-style semiauto matic weapon in Saturday night’s attack, but a handgun and additional ammu nition magazines also were recovered. The official could not discuss details of the investigation publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.
Information on a lawyer who could speak on Aldrich’s behalf wasn’t imme diately available Monday.
Club Q on its Facebook page thanked the “quick reactions of heroic customers that subdued the gunman and ended this hate attack.”
Already questions were being raised about why authorities didn’t seek to take Aldrich’s guns away from him in 2021, when he was arrested after his mother reported he threatened her with a homemade bomb and other weapons.
Though authorities at the time said no explosives were found, gun control advocates are asking why police didn’t try to trigger Colorado’s “red flag” law, which would have allowed authorities to seize the weapons his mother says he had. There’s also no public record prosecutors ever moved forward with felony kidnapping and menacing charges against Aldrich.
Mayor John Suthers said on NBC’s “Today” that the district attorney would file motions in court Monday to allow law enforcement to talk more about any criminal history “that this individual might have had.”
Of the 25 injured at Club Q, at least seven were in critical condition, authorities said. Some were hurt trying to flee, and it was unclear if all of them were shot, a police spokesperson said. Suthers told The Associated Press there was “reason to hope” all of those hospitalized would recover.
The shooting rekindled memories of the 2016 massacre at the Pulse gay night club in Orlando, Florida, that killed 49 people. Colorado has experienced several
mass killings, including at Columbine High School in 1999, a movie theater in suburban Denver in 2012 and at a Boulder supermarket last year.
It was the sixth mass killing this month and came in a year when the nation was shaken by the deaths of 21 in a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas.
Authorities were called to Club Q at 11:57 p.m. Saturday with a report of a shooting, and the first officer arrived at midnight.
Joshua Thurman said he was in the club with about two dozen other people and was dancing when the shots began. He initially thought it was part of the music, until he heard another shot and said he saw the flash of a gun muzzle.
Thurman, 34, said he ran with another person to a dressing room where someone already was hiding. They locked the door, turned off the lights and got on the floor but could hear the violence unfolding, including the gunman being subdued, he added.
“I could have lost my life — over what? What was the purpose?” he said as tears ran down his cheeks. “We were just enjoying ourselves. We weren’t out harming anyone. We were in our space, our community, our home, enjoying ourselves like everybody else does.”
Detectives were examining whether anyone had helped the suspect before the attack, Police Chief Adrian Vasquez said. He said patrons who intervened during the attack were “heroic” and prevented more deaths.
Club Q is a gay and lesbian nightclub that features a drag show on Saturdays, according to its website. Club Q’s Facebook page said planned entertainment included a “punk and alternative show” preceding a birthday dance party, with a Sunday all-ages drag brunch.
Drag events have become a focus of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and protests recent ly as opponents, including politicians, have proposed banning children from them, falsely claiming they’re used to “groom” children.
A hate-crime charge against Aldrich requires proving he was motivated by the victims’ actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity.
President Joe Biden said that while the motive for the shootings was not yet clear, “we know that the LGBTQI+ community has been subjected to horrific hate violence in recent years.”
“Places that are supposed to be safe spaces of acceptance and celebration should never be turned into places of
terror and violence,” he said. “We cannot and must not tolerate hate.”
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis, who became the first openly gay man to be elected a U.S. governor in 2018, called the shooting “sickening.”
“My heart breaks for the family and friends of those lost, injured and trau matized,” Polis said.
A makeshift memorial sprang up Sunday near the club, with flowers, a stuffed animal, candles and a sign saying “Love over hate” next to a rainbow-col ored heart.
Seth Stang was buying flowers for the memorial when he was told that two of the dead were his friends. The 34-year-old transgender man said it was like having “a bucket of hot water getting dumped on you. ... I’m just tired of running out of places where we can exist safely.”
Ryan Johnson, who lives near the club and was there last month, said it was one of only two nightspots for the LGBTQ community in Colorado Springs. “It’s kind of the go-to for Pride,” the 26-year-old said of the club.
Colorado Springs, a city of about 480,000 located 70 miles (110 kilometers) south of Denver, is home to the U.S. Air Force Academy and the U.S. Olympic Training Center, as well as Focus on the Family, a prominent evangelical Christian ministry that lobbies against LGBTQ rights. The group condemned the
shooting and said it “exposes the evil and wickedness inside the human heart.”
In November 2015, three people were killed and eight wounded at a Planned Parenthood clinic in the city when authorities say a gunman targeted the clinic because it performed abortions.
The shooting came during Transgender Awareness Week and just at the start of Sunday’s Transgender Day of Remembrance, when events around the world are held to mourn and remember transgender people lost to violence.
Since 2006, there have been 523 mass killings and 2,727 deaths as of Nov. 19, according to The Associated Press/USA Today database on mass killings in the U.S.

November: no sun, no moon, no stars, no noon. The children’s poem captures everything about November that says, “No.”
Sometimes, it’s difficult to find beauty in November. The days are cold, gray, and short. The blue sky has turned leaden.
But today was different. The black of night faded into gray, then pale pink. The pink grew to a bright salmon, bathing the entire sky for a few moments. Then, with a flash of orange turning to brilliant gold, the sun rose.
A rare day in November. Our solar panels will produce electricity for the duration of this short day. The panels have produced during the winter since they were installed. During the sunny season, more electricity is produced by our system than we use. As the days become shorter it produces some, but not as much, electricity as during the long days of summer.
When our solar panels produce more electricity than we use, the excess is stored in our battery bank to be drawn on when we need it, as in emergencies. (One summer morning, we awoke with the air conditioner working. Then it suddenly stopped. After a moment of surprise, we realized that the solar powered batteries had provided enough electricity all night even though the grid was down.)
We have a net metering agreement with ComEd which allows us to use grid elec tricity when our system is not producing and the batteries are low. During the long days of summer, the solar panels produce most of our electricity. When the batteries are full, the excess flows into the grid to build our credit. When we use grid electricity, our credit is drawn down.
As the days become shorter, fewer hours of sunlight means that the solar panels will produce less electricity. Not only are there less hours of productivity, the sun hits the panels at a lower, less optimum angle. Since less solar electricity is available, electricity is provided by the grid. Using grid electricity decreases our credit. Eventually, that credit will be depleted and we will rely solely on the grid for our power. Our credit this November is still over a thousand kilowatts.
In winter, not only do the solar panels produce less electricity, snow often covers them, allowing still less sunlight to reach them. A shortcoming of snow is that although it sometimes slides off,
it often sticks to the panel and must be removed using a long handled scraper which means physical work. But during the cheerful, sunny days in January and February, snow partially compensates for fewer hours of sunlight by reflecting that light onto the panels. The reflective quality of snow is being used profitably by installing systems in the Swiss Alps. Their presence, while useful, does detract from the natural beauty of the area.
Snow can be a blessing and a curse. Now it’s snowing; the world is bleak, white and silent.

Tree prices are: Fir: $65; 12 feet and over: $80; White pine and spruce: $50.
Families come with the expectation of hunting something less dangerous than big game, but just as satisfying. Find the perfect tree for your family’s holiday celebrations and leave Sand Ridge with the sense of satisfaction that only a successful hunt can create.
Trees, left by the former Sinnissippi Tree Farm purchased by the PPSOC, trimmed to beautiful shapes, will be sold to pay for restoration and maintenance of the site which contains the highest quality prairie remnants in this part of Illinois.
PPSOC has donated trees to the Oregon Chamber of Commerce for the Courthouse and to the Oregon Park District for years.
Sand Ridge is a great place to visit even without the bonus of the Christmas trees. With hills of waving prairie grasses and forbs (wild flowers), stands of spruce, fir and pine, it provides a quiet beauty and sense of peace to those fortunate enough to stop there. The sound of the breezes in the evergreens and their invigorating scent provide a moment transported to the north woods.
Surrounded by towering white pines which block the sight of cornfields and houses, it is a place set apart – a peaceful sanctuary from the everyday.
Visit, enjoy, and take the feeling with you.
