Documents show state’s disaster request met FEMA’s threshold Feds denied aid for August storms, ruling it ‘not warranted’ By Ben Szalinski

Capitol News Illinois bszalinski@capitolnewsillinois.com

SPRINGFIELD — Gov. JB Pritzker’s president ia l disaster request t hat was denied by the Federal Emergency Management Agency met the threshold for statewide disaster assistance, according to state documents. However, some counties, including Cook, did not meet FEMA’s standards by themselves, though federal rules allow states to add smaller damage totals from other counties to disaster requests. A spokesperson for FEMA did not ex plain why Illinois’ request was denied and did not say if the agency conducted additional in-person damage assessments. “Just like all declaration requests, FEMA follows the Stafford Act and its regulations to support the determination process on whether federal assistance is warranted to supplement state, local, tribal or territorial efforts and capabilities provided by the state of Illinois,” the agency said in a statement. “The law and regulations require FEMA to review each request closely and consider the unique circumstances of disaster-caused damages as well as state and local capacity.” Pritzker submitted a request to FEMA last month seeking resources to help the

eight counties recover from flooding, tornadoes and severe wind damage. The governor’s request covered Champaign, Cook, Ford, Fulton, McLean, Tazewell, Vermilion and Will counties. He’s appealing FEMA’s denial. The state itself spent $2.2 million on “personnel, expertise and equipment,” $100,000 to activate the State Emergency Operations Center, and $1.5 million in community development block grant funds for disaster response. There were 4,519 residential structures damaged throughout the state, including 46 that were completely destroyed. Most of the destroyed homes were in Cook County, which also accounted for half of the state’s damaged homes. All the damage to homes added up to $19.5 million. Many residents also suffered flood damage that was not covered by insurance. The state’s numbers show 48% of Cook County residents suffered uninsured losses.

FEMA’s standards

According to the documents, Illinois’ total damage exceeded FEMA’s thresholds. Per capita, damage in the affected counties was $5.95, while FEMA requires $1.94 for Illinois to qualify for aid. The damage totaled $27.6 million, while FEMA’s standard for the state is $24.9 million. FEMA conducted public assistance damage assessments virtually and the

state asked FEMA to conduct in-person damage assessments to verify the numbers. Damage in Cook County was only 63% of the $18.6 million total required in the county for public assistance from FEMA, but the state argued in its application that an in-person assessment by FEMA would raise the total to that threshold. Only half of the eight counties in the request met their local thresholds for damage: Fulton, McLean, Vermilion and Will. “FEMA is required to consider concentrated local impacts of this kind, recognize that severe damage in specific areas can justify a declaration on its own, even where the statewide per capita indicator is not met,” the state said in its original request. “This event meets that standard and supports a (public assistance) declaration under this factor, regardless of the statewide average. Damage from this event is concentrated, not evenly spread.” Pritzker’s request noted Indiana received federal help for the same storms: “The same weather system carried into Northwest Indiana that same day, producing repeated rounds of heavy rain through August 16th, with NWS Indianapolis describing the resulting central Indiana flooding as catastrophic,” Pritzker’s request said. “On August 25th, 2026, FEMA approved a major disaster declaration for Indiana with both Individual Assistance and Public Assistance, FEMA-4933-DR, for severe storms, straight line, winds, tornadoes, and flooding using a single incident period of August 11, 2026, and continuing.” A Politico analysis earlier this year found Democrat-led states saw just 23% of their disaster requests granted in his second term, compared to 89% for Republican states. Under the past six administrations — including Trump’s first term — states led by either party saw similar rates of approval, between 70% and 90%. The analysis also found the administration took twice as long to issue decisions on requests from blue states. “Whoever serves as governor or as president of the United States, their obligation is to serve everybody, even the people that didn’t vote for them, and that’s not the way Donald Trump is operating the federal government,” Pritzker said on Thursday. Macktown By Charles Herbst Contributor

Stephen Mack, Jr., widely regarded as the first permanent white settler in Winnebago County, was born in Vermont in 1798. He was sent to a school on the site of the present Dartmouth College. He left school and joined his Detroit-based father as a licensed fur trapper for the American Fur Company. His territory ran from the Four Lakes Region (now Madison) to Grand Detour. At Grand Detour, Mack married his wife, Hononegah, who was a Potawatomi. Stephen and Hononegah had 11 children, two of which died in childbirth. Hononegah was well regarded for her kindness to those in need and her care for the sick. She was one of the first people in the region to successfully navigate between the White and Native American cultures. Stephen Mack built the first bridge in Illinois across the Rock River, claimed 1000 acres of land along the river, and established a hamlet at the junction of the Rock and Pecatonica Rivers that he named Pecatonic. Mack offered the bridge to the State of Illinois, but they declined to accept it.

Mack was an entrepreneur and a land speculator. With the importance of river transport in the early 19th Century, this was a strategic site, also not far from the mouth of Raccoon Creek and the Sugar River, which also facilitated fur trapping. In 1840, Mack built an impressive house for his family at Pecatonic. At that time, the US census showed the population of Pecatonic at 281 persons living in 50 households. Stephen Mack was a progressive who cared about education as well as the role of women in society. Mack included Hononegah’s name on the deed to his property, which was unheard of in those days. He built a shop next door that was used as a cabinet shop by Sylvester Stevens and had a second-story classroom. Mack wanted his children to be educated, as well as his wife. He paid the teacher’s wages personally. He also offered 20 acres of land at Pecatonic to the Rockford Female Seminary, the institution that went on to become Rockford University. The school did not take him up on the offer. A limestone building, W hitman’s Trading Post, was built in 1846. The building served as the Whitmans home and a

general store, including postal services. It is still standing, and the interior has been restored and furnished with period pieces. Across the Rock River, the Talcotts founded Rockton, which has a long history as well. The Talcotts were friends of the Macks and initially stayed at the Macks’ home when they came to the area. Rockton flourished because the Talcotts built a mill race that bypassed a bend in the river and provided power for the community. Hononegah died in 1847 and Steven Mack passed in 1850, leaving their nine children as orphans. They were scattered in foster homes in Michigan and Wisconsin. Several descendants have returned and settled in the vicinity. The wooden bridge was swept away in a flood in 1851. After Mack died, the remaining settlers gradually left and moved across the river to Rockton. A major reason for the move was that Rockton had power from the mill race, which Pecatonic lacked. Today, the Pecatonic settlement is known as Macktown. The site is owned by the Forest Preser ve District of Winnebago County. The district acquired

the site in 1927, and much of it became a golf course in the 1950s. The Macktown Living History Foundation has actively researched and curated the site. Macktown is also an important archeological site. There is evidence of human habitation on the site dating back 13,000 years. The area was once covered by a sea, and many fossils have been unearthed. The interpretive center and other buildings are open from 2 to 4 on the second Sunday of the month. At other times, a trip to see the site and the building exteriors still makes for a pleasant day trip. Macktown Forest Preserve is located just west of the Village of Rockton on Illinois Route 75 at the junction of Wagon Wheel Road. This is the most scenic part of Winnebago County, and there are several other forest preserves in the area. None of the forest preserves charge an admission fee. Rockton has several inviting places to eat. Macktown is served by the Stateline Mass Transit District dial-a-ride service, which also connects to the Rockford Mass Transit District. AI agents are only as good as the personal information you share. That raises privacy concerns By Wyatte Grantham-Philips Associated Press

Matt Robb wanted to sell his computer keyboard. So he made a listing on Facebook Marketplace — and, as an experiment late last month, he put Meta’s new artificial intelligence agent Muse in the driver’s seat. Muse got to work. But within a day, Robb got an alarming update: A buyer he didn’t know had shown up outside his house late at night. How? Muse had struck a deal on its own and shared Robb’s home address after agreeing to a pickup. It even sent an automated “Yep, I’m here!” message from his account when the buyer arrived — all without Robb’s knowledge. “Not only did it give my address when the guy asked and it accepted the offer, but it literally was almost like teasing the guy (about me being there when I wasn’t),” said Robb, a Toronto-based content creator who also detailed the experience in his now widely-shared social media posts. Many have welcomed AI agents into their online lives, and raved about how personalized assistants like Muse can handle everyday tasks with ease — from snagging a dinner reservation or planning a trip, to organizing email inboxes. But like other AI bots, the agents are only as good as the information they have access to. They perform better the more they know about a user — and perhaps also that person’s friends, family and even colleagues. That raises privacy concerns. Robb and the buyer eventually made amends, and he learned from Meta that the sharing of his address came down to permissions he granted when first giving Muse access to his Marketplace profile. But the episode showed real-world risks that can arise from sharing extensive personal information with the technology. “Using an AI agent is similar to handing someone your keys and a to-do list,” said Veronica Rivera, assistant professor at Georgia Tech’s School of Cybersecurity and Privacy. “How helpful they are, and by extension how risky, depends on which keys you hand over.”

Companies have varied privacy policies for AI agents

Since its September launch, downloads of Meta’s Muse app have skyrocketed. And competition is only growing. OpenAI recently rolled out its own lineup of “always on” AI helpers, called dots, which can be integrated into ChatGPT and workplace platforms like Slack and Microsoft Teams. Older generative AI chatbots, like the standard version of ChatGPT, respond to specific prompts. At the user’s request, they

can write essays, generate new images or music, or even write lines of code. Meta’s Muse and OpenAI’s dots go a step further to perform day-to-day tasks on a person’s behalf. AI agents are powered by the same large language models as chatbots, but they run in a loop. That allows an agent to take proactive steps, even when the user isn’t looking. “One of the things that makes these AI agents really appealing is that they are unprecedentedly useful,” said Rivera, who is also a Microsoft-funded Computing Research Association Trustworthy AI Research Fellow. But the convenience comes with the price of sharing more details about your life. Once AI agents obtain users’ information, it’s very difficult to fully withdraw access, said Ebrahim Bagheri, a professor at the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Information. “If you provide access to your credit card to an agent, the agent now immediately has access to all of the historical transactions … they will immediately — within less than seconds — ingest all of that data,” Bagheri said. And while users can later withdraw access, Bagheri said there’s “no taking back” data the agent has already seen, and how developers store historical data can be murky. Both Meta and OpenAI outline privacy policies for their new AI agents, which operate on their own dedicated cloud computers. You can turn off memory sharing between dots and ChatGPT, but information the agent previously received isn’t automatically deleted. OpenAI gives users an option to request access to, delete or correct personal information, although rights can vary depending on where you live. Meta’s Muse gives users options to delete message history and other information, too. For day-to-day use, the agent prompts users for access permissions — and Meta has said Muse learns about a user and who they interact with “based on public information and from what you’ve chosen to share.” But the company says that all stays secure for each user. But the tech giant also notes that Muse can still “make mistakes or take unexpected actions.”

Risks of mishaps rise with AI agents’ level of access

In Robb’s case, he learned the disclosure of his address came down to “always allow” permissions he granted when he first let Muse on his Facebook Marketplace profile, where he had shared his pickup address

as part of a broader template for the agent to respond to prospective buyers. But he warned others could similarly misunderstand the extent of that access — and said he initially thought the AI agent would check with him before sharing that information or accepting offers, regardless. His AI agent didn’t follow the rest of his instructions without error, either. For another item Robb was selling, Muse seemingly suggested he would accept a price $100 below the previously-set minimum. When reached by The Associated Press, Meta acknowledged the agent’s pricing error without offering further comment. Robb later largely disconnected Muse from his apps. In an interview earlier this month, he said it could’ve been a far worse situation, especially “if some stranger turned up to someone more vulnerable’s house.” Still, Robb said he expects these agents to be fine-tuned and he would consider re-enabling Muse in the future. He’s since been testing another AI agent — Grok Bot from Elon Musk’s X. Other tech companies have become wary of the influx of AI agents. Earlier this month, Apple said it would introduce new controls for its Mac operating system in response to AI agents’ broader access of apps like mail, messages and even browsing history without users’ “full knowledge and understanding.” “As AI agents become increasingly capable and autonomous, the risks associated with this level of access will grow substantially,” Apple wrote in an Oct. 2 update. Apple didn’t specify any developers or agents by name, but the update arrived after Inc. Magazine columnist Jason Aten reported that Muse watched notifications on his Mac — including Messages — without him giving the agent that specific access. Meta spokesperson Andy Stone has maintained such integration is “entirely opt-in,” writing on social media last month that users would have to enable both the Apple security feature “Full Disk Access” and a Messages connector through Muse. Aten said he didn’t grant the agent those permissions. Even those who do not join the AI agent boom aren’t necessarily shielded. Consumers who don’t download an AI agent might still interact with others who do. And beyond potential confusion when AI sends messages on behalf of a user, experts warn of ripple effects when it comes to privacy. “When your agent reads your inbox or your texts, it’s also reading what your friends and family sent you, even if they never explicitly agreed to that,” Rivera said.

‘Partial win for customers’: ICC approves $82 million rate hike for Nicor By Maggie Dougherty

Capitol News Illinois mdougherty@capitolnewsillinois.com

CHICAGO — The Illinois Commerce Commission approved an $82 million rate hike on Thursday. The amount was negotiated between Nicor Gas and the attorney general’s office as part of a settlement that reduced the company’s original request by nearly two-thirds. The rate increase is expected to add around $2 a month to residential customers’ bills beginning in November. “A settlement is a compromise, so we’re not thrilled about every element, but we are pleased the Commission approved it,” Illinois PIRG Director Abe Scarr said in a statement. “We are excited that the settlement sets a lower, $15, monthly fixed charge. Lower fixed charges reward energy efficiency and conservation and give customers more control over their bill.” The prior fixed fee was $21 per month, regardless of the volume of gas used. The lower monthly charge gives consumers more control over their bills and protects low-income customers who often use less gas than high-income customers, according to Environmental Law and Policy Center senior attorney Rob Kelter. “The larger users cause there to be more investment in the system,” Kelter said. “It’s fair to ask them to pay more.” Kelter said he’d like to see that charge go down to $12 a month or lower. He thinks Nicor is moving in the right direction and has shown a willingness to do better. But consumer advocates say the decision is only a “partial win for customers,” in that it still raises rates, building on other past rate hikes from the utility, and allows a higher profit rate than they hoped to see. The settlement allows for a 9.48% return on equity for shareholders, which is between the 8.95% that Illinois PIRG and Legal Action Chicago had sought and the 10.35% rate that Nicor originally requested. Utility watchdog groups had characterized that request as “outrageous” and “exorbitant.” Nicor serves a large swath of northern Illinois, excluding the city of Chicago.

Labor agreement

The settlement negotiated by Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul’s office included a side deal on union labor that drew criticism from consumer advocates and was lambasted by the Chicago

Tribune’s editorial board as a “nonsensical jobs deal.” That deal committed Nicor to maintaining this year’s union staffing levels through the end of 2027 and continuing its capital investment levels. But like at all public utilities, spending on infrastructure is how Nicor makes its profit. Consumer advocates fear that the agreement could give Nicor fuel for a future rate case, in that it could say the commission already blessed the spending by signing off on the labor side deal. The consumer and environmental advocates who were party to the primary settlement declined to be party to the secondary labor deal. While the commission accepted the agreement as “consistent” with its rate-making decisions, it also emphasized its own authority to scrutinize future rate cases without being held to conditions agreed to between Nicor and the attorney general’s office. “The commission is not bound by any of the terms of this settlement in any future matter, and the commission retains the authority to make rate-making determinations regarding the prudence, justness, and reasonableness of any future expenditures and resulting rates,” Commission Chairman Doug Scott said of the labor agreement. That is, if the company were to spend at a higher-than-justified level to meet the terms of its agreement with Raoul’s office, whether that spending can be passed on to ratepayers will still be subject to the commission’s scrutiny. Scott added that it is outside the scope of the commission’s role to dictate who should perform any work for the utility. “The commission’s role with respect to workforce commitments and who performs work is limited to determining whether any expense is reasonable,” Scott said.

Pattern of rate cases

Consumer advocates say Nicor has already indicated that it believes more investment is needed in its system, so they expect the company to file another rate case in January. Nicor did not respond to questions about future rate case plans. Scarr of Illinois PIRG described the rate hikes as part of a pattern of ‘excessive spending.’ “This is Nicor’s sixth rate hike in a decade,” Scarr said. “These rapid and significant rate hikes are driven by wasteful spending on unnecessary fossil fuel

infrastructure, which threatens to lock northern Illinois into paying for polluting infrastructure for generations to come.” But environmental law center attorney Kelter said it’s also a symptom of a regulatory body that’s doing its job. “The Illinois Commerce Commission has shown that it is going to scrutinize every penny that utilities ask for in rate cases, and when you have a really strong commission that doesn’t rubber stamp rate hikes, you’re going to have utilities coming in more often for rate cases,”

Kelter said. “And so, while nobody likes to see utilities coming in for rate cases, that’s the product of having such a strong commission that’s protecting consumers in Illinois.” Capitol News Illinois is a nonprofit, nonpartisan news service that distributes state government coverage to hundreds of news outlets statewide. Selecting apple cultivars for your backyard By Grant McCarty Contributor

Growing apples in your backyard lets you grow unique varieties—cultivars you love that aren’t always available at grocery stores. While Illinois Extension typically recommends waiting until spring to plant apple trees, fall is the ideal time to taste different cultivars and select and order your trees. Nearly 16,350 known apple cultivars exist in the United States, many of which look very similar. However, most varieties available for backyard planting are familiar names like ‘Granny Smith’, ‘Red Delicious’, and ‘McIntosh’. Some cultivars are products of decades of work at university breeding programs, such as ‘Honeycrisp’ and ‘Sweet Sixteen’ from the

University of Minnesota. The University of Illinois, in partnership with Purdue and Rutgers and known as PRI, helped develop cultivars including ‘Winecrisp’, ‘Crimson Crisp’, and ‘Pixie Crunch’. Other varieties come from abroad, like ‘Fuji’ from Japan and ‘Gala’ from New Zealand. A category called “club apples”—including ‘Evercrisp’ and ‘Ludacrisp’—are exclusive to commercial orchardists, meaning you can buy the fruit but not the trees. Most cultivars will thrive in your backyard if grown on cold-hardy rootstocks appropriate for our region. Reputable nurseries will select the right rootstock for you once you provide your growing zone. Dessert apples, the type most people eat fresh or cook with, fall into three broad categories: fresh eating, cooking, or

multi-use. Some overlap exists between these groups. Multi-use apples include ‘Cortland’, ‘Jonathan’, ‘Granny Smith’, ‘Blondee’, ‘Gala’, ‘Ambrosia’, ‘Golden Delicious’, ‘Liberty’, ‘Jonagold’, ‘Enterprise’, ‘Ida Red’, ‘Jonamac’, ‘Early Fuji’, ‘Braeburn’, and ‘Pink Lady’. Fresh eating apples include ‘Empire’, ‘Jonagold’, ‘Snowsweet’, ‘Fuji’, ‘Suncrisp’, ‘P i x i e C r u n c h’, ‘R e d D e l i c i o u s’, ‘Gingergold’, ‘Sansa’, ‘Lucy Rose’ (red flesh), ‘Honeycrisp’, and ‘Crimson Crisp’. Cooking, baking, and sauce apples include ‘McIntosh’, ‘Northern Spy’, ‘Rome Beauty’, ‘Winesap’, ‘Mutsu (Crispin)’, ‘Cameo’, and ‘Goldrush’. Among these 34 highlighted apples, you’ll find different flavors, colors, sizes,

levels of disease resistance, storage qualities, and other characteristics. Many more cultivars are available beyond this list. I am often asked what my favorite apples are and I always say the PRI apples, particularly ‘Crimson Crisp’ and ‘Pixie Crunch’. Both have excellent flavor, color, and good eating quality. ‘Goldrush’ is another PRI apple with good cider quality. Finally, a word of caution on ‘Honeycrisp’. It is an overall challenging cultivar to grow that can take 7-8 years to yield, prone to post-harvest disorders, and finnicky when it comes to it’s growth. You have better options. Grant is the Local Food and Smalls Farms Educator of the University of Illinois Extension.

Rebuilding local economies in response to scarcity By Dr. Robert Vogl, Ph.D.

Illinois Renewable Energy Association Contributor

When I got my first new street bicycle around 12 years old, I was soon taking it apart which upset my mother as she felt I would wreck it. What she did not understand was that it was a natural curiosity and a way for me to learn how to take care of it. A local bike shop was nearby and the owner was very helpful in providing advice on how to keep the bike in top running order. At 17 I bought a used car with a friend and we began tinkering with it. We decided to take out the carburetor and clean it and when we put back it in the car would not start. So with took the carburetor off and carried a small part along with it that we did not know where it belonged. A nearby gas station owner pointed out its importance and showed us to put it in its proper place and the car ran well. I learned a little bit about taking care of a car but learned much more about the high cost of owning and operating a car and I sold the car to my friend. In the computer world a young teenager

began repairing malfunctioning computers for friends and turned into a business. When his father lost his job as an engineer his young son hired his father. In recent years more of my friends and former mechanics complain about the fact that the newer car models have a wide range of warning lights on the dashboard but they have no idea how to respond. Some refer to the owner’s manual for advice however the most common comment was to take it to a dealer. It is increasingly difficult for small shop owners to stay up to date on the use of electronics in cars which forces people to drive to more distant specialized shops for service. If gas and diesel prices continue to stay costly and the automotive electronics force more local mechanics to close their shops alternative services will have to emerge to meet our transportation needs. The problem facing vehicle owners is the increasing complexity of their cars coming from the increased use of advanced electronics necessitate going to large shops which can diagnose and resolve the elec-

tronic faults in their vehicles and secure the appropriate replacement chips. In article number 328 The Evolution of Inverting Scarcities, by Tom Morgan turns his focus on finding economic solutions which differ from the two most commonly mentioned prospects of sudden economic collapse or a slow economic collapse as resource scarcity intensifies. Morgan suggests there are local and regional actions which communities could implement to adjust to living in a time of increasing scarcity. The book Beyond Growth by Barry Cooper provides some actions that individuals and communities could implement to adjust to a resource scarcity. One action which would help to rebuild a sustainable community would to make it possible for citizens could have the option of buying a vehicle they or a local shop owner could repair. He cited the existence of a Canadian company that makes a range of electronics free tractors which cost less and are reliable. Another economic adjustment which could be made to reduce the cost of caring

for the elderly in society. Instead of government funded residential facilities he points out it could be less costly to increase the support available for people to remain in their homes as they age. A third suggestion involves the shortening of the distance between the farm and the table to reduce food costs. The savings would come from reducing the packaging, transport, refrigeration, storage, marketing and profits in the existing food market. As citizens are faced with rising economic costs these suggestions and others might prove helpful in reducing the economic and social stress. Given the prospect of economic collapse or intensified global conflict over declining energy supplies and essential materials the implementation of moving back towards more local and regional responses could prove essential. There are existing groups in communities focused on alleviated the economic stresses we are facing. These groups could use more community support. One such local group that is trying to more for the area is SustainRockford.org.

Shrewd moves helped the Brewers become annual contenders. Here’s how they got to the World Series By Steve Megargee Associated Press

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Now that the World Series-bound Milwaukee Brewers finally have translated their extraordinary regular-season success into the postseason, the same question that comes up every time they clinch a playoff berth is getting repeated again. How do they keep doing it? The Brewers play in Major League Baseball’s smallest market. They have a payroll in the bottom half of the majors. They typically trade away their big-name players a year before they reach free agency. Yet they posted the best record in the majors for a second straight year, earned their eighth playoff berth in nine seasons and won a fourth straight NL Central title. It’s a stunning run for a franchise that had a 25-year playoff drought from 1983-2007. The one knock against the Brewers was their lack of postseason success. Nobody can make that criticism anymore, now that they’re in the Fall Classic for the first time since 1982 — and second time ever — after sweeping the two-time defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers out of the playoffs. Conventional wisdom suggested this run of success would end for the Brewers after the departures of president of baseball operations David Stearns and manager Craig Counsell. Stearns stepped down after the 2022 season and left for the New York Mets a year later. Counsell left for the NL Central rival Chicago Cubs after Milwaukee’s 2023 playoff loss. Instead, the Brewers promoted from within and got even better with Matt Arnold as president of baseball operations and Pat Murphy as manager. Arnold, who also made it to the World Series while working in Tampa Bay’s front office in 2008, had served as Stearns’ right-hand man before taking over for him. He has utilized Milwaukee’s outstanding farm system by signing outfielders Jackson Chourio and Luis Lara, and shortstop Cooper Pratt to long-term deals before they had ever reached the major leagues. All three have played major roles this season. Perhaps his best move was deciding on Murphy to take over as manager after Counsell’s departure. Murphy, who had been Counsell’s bench coach since 2016, was selected as NL manager of the year each of the last two seasons.

“He’s t remendous, I t hink, and well-rounded in a way where he has a great way about going about his business with the push-pull,” Arnold said. “He’s good at pushing when you need it and pulling back when you need it as well. He does a fantastic job.” Here’s a chronological look at other major moves the Brewers have made over the last several years to produce a roster capable of winning their first World Series title.

Trading for Christian Yelich

Stearns’ greatest trade was acquiring Christian Yelich from the Miami Marlins in January 2018 for Lewis Brinson, Isan Díaz, Monte Harrison and Jordan Yamamoto. Yelich won the MVP in 2018, finished second in the voting in 2019 and signed a nine-year, $215 million contract in March 2020. He was named the first captain in Brewers history last month. Brinson, Díaz and Harrison all hit below .200 in their major league careers. Yamamoto pitched in the majors from 2019-21 and posted a 6.05 ERA.

Drafting Garrett Mitchell

The Brewers selected Garrett Mitchell out of UCLA with the 20th overall pick in the 2020 draft. Mitchell, who has Type 1 diabetes, dealt with a multitude of injuries for much of his career but played 145 regular-season games this year and hit two homers in the NLCS.

Drafting Jacob Misiorowski

Jacob Misiorowski had committed to LSU when the Brewers selected the hard-throwing right-hander out of Crowder College in Neosho, Missouri, in the second round of the 2022 draft. Misiorowski could have teamed up with 2025 Cy Young Award winner Paul Skenes on a Tigers team that won the 2023 College World Series. He instead joined the Brewers and developed into this year’s Cy Young Award favorite. Misiorowski isn’t the only former Crowder College pitcher on Milwaukee’s roster. Aaron Ashby, who has thrown 12 1/3 scoreless innings in the playoffs, also pitched for Crowder before the Brewers drafted him in the fourth round in 2018.

Trading away Josh Hader

The Brewers led the NL Central when they dealt star closer Josh Hader to San Diego at the 2022 trade deadline in

exchange for pitchers Taylor Rogers, Robert Gasser and Dinelson Lamet as well as outfielder Esteury Ruiz. This seemed at the time like the biggest misstep of Stearns’ tenure, as the Brewers faded afterward and missed the playoffs. But after Tommy John surgery in 2024 slowed his development, Gasser developed into a major weapon late this season. The left-hander has allowed one run in nine innings in the playoffs. This deal also indirectly led to the next move on the list, which proved much more fruitful.

Trading for William Contreras

William Contreras was coming off an All-Star season when Atlanta dealt him to Milwaukee as part of a December 2022 three-team trade in which the Braves also acquired Sean Murphy from the Athletics. All the Brewers had to give up was Ruiz, who went to the Athletics. Contreras has made two All-Star teams with Milwaukee and finished fifth in the 2024 MVP voting. He’s hitting .367 with a 1.157 OPS in this postseason. Also in this deal, the Brewers acquired Joel Payamps, who played a key bullpen role for a couple of years. Ruiz, who is now with Miami, has hit .234 with 111 steals in 306 career major league games.

Trading for Trevor Megill

After the Minnesota Twins designated Trevor Megill for assignment in April 2023, the Brewers acquired the reliever for Taylor Floyd, who hasn’t appeared in a major league game. Megill has recorded 81 saves over the last three seasons and was an All-Star in 2025. He has pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings with four saves this postseason.

Trading for Jake Bauers

The Brewers acquired Jake Bauers from the New York Yankees for minor leaguers Jace Avina and Brian Sanchez in November 2023. Bauers returned to Milwaukee on a minor league deal in 2025 and is playing this season on a $2.7 million contract. Bauers broke through this year to post an .874 OPS in the regular season before getting named the NLCS MVP. Avina and Sanchez haven’t yet reached the major leagues.

Trading away Corbin Burnes

Corbin Burnes had one year remaining until free agency when the Brewers sent

the 2021 Cy Young Award winner to the Baltimore Orioles in February 2024 for infielder Joey Ortiz and pitcher DL Hall. Ortiz hit .270 with a .730 OPS in 134 games this season while alternating between third base and shortstop. Hall has pitched 5 1/3 innings of shutout relief in the postseason.

Trading for Andrew Vaughn

Andrew Vaughn had slumped so badly that he’d been sent to the minors before the Brewers acquired him from the White Sox in a June 2025 trade that sent pitcher Aaron Civale to Chicago. Vaughn has posted an .849 OPS in 168 games with the Brewers over the last two seasons.

Adding Kyle Harrison, Shane Drohan and David Hamilton

The Brewers traded third baseman Caleb Durbin and infielders Andruw Monasterio and Anthony Seigler to the Boston Red Sox in February after Durbin had finished third in the NL rookie of the year balloting last season. The Brewers acquired pitchers Kyle Harrison and Shane Drohan, and infielder David Hamilton in the deal. Harrison arguably was Milwaukee’s second-best starting pitcher before slumping late to finish 11-5 with a 4.20 ERA. Drohan was 7-5 with a 4.19 ERA. Hamilton stole 30 bases during the regular season and went 4 for 7 with a homer and three steals in the NLCS.

Week of October 18 to 24, 2026

Horoscope ARIES

A spike in popularity puts you in the spot light. By trusting your instincts, you can chan nel your creativity and bring an exceptional achievement to life. Those around you de pend on you; your presence inspires, unites and soothes.

TAURUS

Despite your wellplanned scheduling, cer tain situations demand more patience than anticipated. Instead of becoming frustrated, turn these pauses into opportunities for ob servation, reflection or inner recalibration.

GEMINI

The cold weather sparks your longing for sunshine. The thought of an escape to warmer climes will motivate you to work harder. By staying focused and organized, you’ll soon secure an enticing offer to turn this dream escape into reality.

CANCER

Your artistic talent is taking on a new dimen sion and making a career in art a real possi bility. Concrete changes unlock fresh oppor tunities. On the romantic front, a joint project strengthens your bond.

LEO

A vibrant social life strengthens your friend ships and lifts your spirits. The idea of relo cating grows more compelling: a new com munity, a new space and a warmer setting to welcome loved ones and enjoy a refreshed environment.

VIRGO

A project drags on and demands more of your time and effort than anticipated, but you persist. By seeing it through, you’ll expe rience genuine pride in finally completing something you’ve been putting off.

LIBRA

An update to your wardrobe will help you align with your new responsibilities and pro fessional goals. It’ll also give you a self esteem boost. This renewed confidence will be apparent in your interactions and support your success.

SCORPIO

You’ll be consumed by an irresistible urge to sort, organize and declutter. By removing extraneous items, you’ll declutter your living space and, in turn, clear your mind. This ma jor purge signals a brighter new phase.

SAGITTARIUS

Disrupted transportation, delayed messages and misunderstandings hamper communi cation. Rather than pushing through, take the time to slow down, reconsider your path and be flexible. Patience will help you avoid preventable errors.

CAPRICORN

Overtime hours are building up, leaving you less time for loved ones. However, the com ing bonus will enable you to pay off a debt or stabilize your budget. It’s now up to you to reinvest your time in your family.

AQUARIUS

A new job or an ambitious project may ap pear unclear at first. By seeking advice from key people, asking questions and allowing time to do its work, you’ll find your footing and achieve a smoother rhythm.

PISCES

After a strenuous period, your body and mind crave rest. Take a solo trip or a joyful break with good company. This shift in envi ronment will revive your energy, creativity and inner peace.
