In visit to Illinois, VP Harris rallies voters around abortion rights

SPRINGFIELD – Vice President Kamala Harris came to Chicago Friday to rally voters who support abortion rights and urge them to turn out in the upcoming midtermSpeakingelections.ataroundtable discussion on reproductive rights at the University of Illinois Chicago, Harris said the recent U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade has put abortion rights at the forefront in races up and down the ballot.

But Democrats are hopeful that the Supreme Court’s decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, the decision that overturned Roe v. Wade, will energize Democratic, independent, and even some Republican voters and draw attention away from issues like rising inflation, crime and high gasoline prices.Illinois Republicans, however, were quick to respond.

“This year, we have received calls from over 4,500 people seeking support,” she said. “People from over 40 states and two countries have received our support accessing abortion care right here in Illinois.”Lightfoot, meanwhile, said she plans to submit a budget proposal to the Chicago City Council in the coming weeks calling for increased funding of reproductive health care services in the city. She also said the city will refuse to cooperate with other states that seek to block their residents from traveling to Illinois for abortion“Frankly, care.itreminds me, of the fugitive slave laws, people seeking freedom in another state,” she said. “Well, not here, not now, not in Chicago.”

Since the Dobbs decision, strict abor tion restrictions have taken effect in many states, including all those that surround Illinois. That has made Illinois a destination for women seeking abortion who live in states where the procedure is now virtually banned or tightly regulated.

“Vice President Harris, Gov. Pritzker, and the abortion industry are offering women one solution: abortion,” the organization said. “Even worse, they have passed laws that serve to increase the profits of the abortion industry at the expense of women and young girls’ health and safety.”

“Who is your governor matters,” she said. “Whether they’re going to protect these rights and support these rights to freedom and liberty, it matters. Who is your attorney general matters. Whether they are going to protect and defend the principles ingrained in the Constitution of the United States, that matters. Who your local prosecutor is matters if you are in a place that has, as many are attempting to do, criminalized health care providers and are attempting to punishHarriswomen.”wasjoined at the event by Gov. JB Pritzker, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, Attorney General Kwame Raoul, U.S. Rep. Danny Davis and a number of other abortion rights supporters. They were scheduled to hold a political rally on the UIC campus later in the day.

In 2019, however, Pritzker signed into law the Reproductive Health Act which, among other things, declares that access to abortion and other reproductive health care services is a “fundamental right” under Illinois law.

“There’s no doubt that our nation is headed down a dangerous spiral, one where a radical few dictate who does and doesn’t deserve rights,” Pritzker said during the event. “But here in Illinois, we will not go backwards.”

“Instead of ducking and deflecting, the Vice President needs to answer questions regarding the Biden Administration’s role in fueling the inflation crisis, and where she stands on Governor Pritzker and Mayor Lightfoot’s failure to keep our communities safe,” the Illinois Republican Party said in a statement released Friday morning.

“I pray for more success of the Taliban,” he added. “I hope this exchange can lead to peace between Afghanistan and America, because an American was released and I am also free now.”

“Mark’s family then had to navigate two administrations, where many people viewed Mark’s safe return as an impedi ment to their plans for Afghanistan,” the statement said.

At a press conference Monday, Noorzai expressed thankfulness at seeing his “mujahedeen brothers” — a reference to the Taliban — in Kabul.

Even before their takeover of Afghanistan in August last year, the Taliban had demanded the U.S. release Noorzai in exchange for Frerichs. But there had been no public sign of Washington proceeding along those lines.

U.S. officials were more circumspect. Though it does not recognize the Taliban government, the U.S. does have interests at stake in Afghanistan and will continue to engage with the Taliban in addressing the hunger and humanitarian crisis grip ping the country, administration officials said Monday. But officials say they remain concerned about whether the Taliban are committed to fighting terrorism and by the exclusion of girls from schools there.

When he was sentenced to life impris onment, the then-top federal prosecutor in Manhattan said Noorzai’s “worldwide narcotics network supported a Taliban regime that made Afghanistan a breeding ground for international terrorism.”

Biden said in a statement released by the White House, “Bringing the nego tiations that led to Mark’s freedom to a successful resolution required difficult decisions, which I did not take lightly.”

A sister of Frerichs, who is from Lombard, Illinois, thanked U.S. govern ment officials who helped secure her brother’s release.

The exchange is one of the most signif icant prisoner swaps to take place under the Biden administration, coming five months after a separate deal with Russia that resulted in the release of Marine veteran Trevor Reed. Frerichs’ family and other advocates had feared that the U.S. military departure from Afghanistan, and the rise of the Taliban to power, would make it harder to bring him home and would deflect attention away from his imprisonment.

Discussions gained new momentum in June when President Joe Biden granted Noorzai relief from his life sentence, setting the stage for what one admin istration official described as a “very narrow window of opportunity this month” to carry out the deal.

Mark Frerichs, a Navy veteran who had spent more than a decade in Afghanistan as a civilian contractor, was abducted in January 2020 and is believed to have been held since then by the Talibanlinked Haqqani network. He was traded for Bashir Noorzai, a Taliban associate convicted of heroin trafficking in 2008 who had spent 17 years behind bars before his release Monday.

he would survive and come home safely to us,” said a statement from the sister, Charlene Cakora.

Eric Lebson, a former U.S. government national security official who had been advising Frerichs’ family, said in a state ment that “everything about this case has been an uphill fight.” He criticized the Trump administration for having given away “our leverage to get Mark home quickly by signing a peace accord with

WASHINGTON (AP) — An American contractor held hostage in Afghanistan for more than two years has been released in exchange for a convicted Taliban drug lord jailed in the United States, the White House said Monday, announcing a rare success in U.S.-Taliban talks since the militant group took power a little more than a year ago

The collapse of the Western-backed Afghan government and takeover by the Taliban in August 2021, raised additional concern that any progress in negotiations could be undone or that Frerichs could be forgotten. But his name surfaced last month when Biden, who had earlier called for Frerichs’ release, was said by his advisers to have pressed officials to consider any risk posed to Frerichs by the drone strike in Afghanistan that killed al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahri.

The Taliban-appointed foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, hailed the exchange Monday as the the start of a “new era” in U.S.-Taliban relations and the opening of a “new door for talks.”

Frerichs, 60, had been working on civil engineering projects at the time of his Jan. 31, 2020, abduction in Kabul. He was last seen in a video posted last spring by The New Yorker i n which he appeared in traditional Afghan clothing and pleaded for his release. He was accompanied Monday by the administration’s special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, but his ultimate destination was not immediately clear.

“I am so happy to hear that my brother is safe and on his way home to us. Our family has prayed for this each day of the more than 31 months he has been a hostage. We never gave up hope that

U.S. officials across two presidential administrations had tried unsuccessfully to bring Frerichs home. His case has received less public attention than those of other Americans held abroad, including WNBA star Brittney Griner and corporate security executive Paul Whelan, who are both held in Russia and whose relatives met with Biden on Friday

A senior administration official who briefed reporters on condition of anonymity under ground rules set by the administration said that the U.S. govern ment had now determined that Noorzai’s release would “not materially change any risk to Americans or fundamentally alter the contours of the drug trade there.” Officials also took into account that Noorzai had spent 17 years in prison.

At the time of his 2005 arrest, Noorzai would hardly have seemed an ideal recip ient for presidential clemency. He’d been designated on a list reserved for some of the world’s most prolific drug traffickers, and was prosecuted in federal court in New York on charges that accused him of owning opium fields in Kandahar province and relying on a network of distributors who sold the heroin.

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — A Russian missile struck close to a nuclear power plant Monday in southern Ukraine without damaging the three reactors but hit other industrial equipment in what Ukrainian authorities denounced as an act of “nuclear terrorism.”

“If the situation develops this way, our response will be more serious,” Putin“Justsaid.recently, the Russian armed forces have delivered a couple of impactful strikes,” he said, referring to attacks last week. “Let’s consider those as warning strikes.”Aswell as infrastructure, Russian forces are pounding other sites. Following recent battlefield setbacks, Russian President Vladimir Putin threat ened last week to step up attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure. Throughout the war, Russia has targeted Ukraine’s electricity generation and transmission equipment, causing blackouts and endan gering the safety systems of the country’s nuclear power plants.

The Russian Justice Ministry desig nated Pugacheva’s husband, singer and TV presenter Maxim Galkin, as a foreign agent Saturday for allegedly conducting political activities on behalf of Ukraine and receiving Ukrainian funding. Galkin previously criticized the war.

Other recent Russian strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure targeted power plants in the north and a dam in the south. The reactors were operating normally and no staff members were injured, the agency said. But the proximity of the strike renewed fears the nearly 7-monthlong war in Ukraine might produce a radiation disaster.

Ukraine’s Defense Ministry released a black-and-white video showing two large fireballs erupting one after the other in the dark, followed by incandescent showers of sparks. A time stamp on the video read 19 minutes after midnight.

— The Supreme Court in the Russiancontrolled region of Luhansk convicted a former interpreter for the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe and another person whose duties were not specified of high treason Monday. Both were sentenced to 13 years in prison.

On Instagram, where Pugacheva has 3.5 million followers, the singer said she also wanted to be added to the foreign agents register, in solidarity with her husband. She called her husband a “true and incorruptible patriot” who wants “the end of the deaths of our boys for illusory goals that make our country a pariah and weigh heavily on the lives of itsThecitizens.”73-year-old singer has been hugely popular since Soviet times. Her statement was a notable slap from a prominent figure at Russian authorities, who have sought to stifle dissent.

The missile made impact within 300 meters (328 yards) of the reactors at the South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant, blasting a crater 2 meters (6 1/2 feet) deep and 4 meters (13 feet) across, according to Ukrainian nuclear operator Energoatom.

The ministry and Energoatom called the strike “nuclear terrorism.” The Russian Defense Ministry made no immediate comment. The United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency, did not immedi ately respond to a request for comment.

The mayor of the Russian-occupied eastern city of Donetsk said shelling killed 13 civilians there.

“What they seem to be doing each time is to try to cut off the power to the reactor,” she said. “It’s a very clumsy way to do it, because how accurate are these missiles?”

The industrial complex that includes the Pivdennoukrainsk nuclear plant sits along the Southern Bug River about 300 kilometers (190 miles) south of the capi tal, Kyiv. The attack caused the temporary shutdown of a nearby hydropower plant, shattered more than 100 windows at the complex and severed three power trans mission lines, Ukrainian authorities said.

Russian forces have occupied the Zaporizhzhia plant, Europe’s largest nuclear power station, since the early days of the invasion. Shelling cut off its transmission lines, forcing operators

But he rarely got that chance in the second quarter when the Bears fell further and further behind. The Green Bay Packers outscored Chicago 21-0 in that second period and went on to beat the Bears 27-10 on Sunday night.

The Bears wouldn’t threaten again.

Fields tried to make it across the goal line while getting swarmed by Green Bay’s Preston Smith and Jarran Reed. Officials ruled Fields was stopped just shy of the goal line, and the call stood after a replay review.

Perhaps the only good play the offense ran during that entire stretch — a 31-yard completion to former Packers receiver Equanimeous St. Brown — got wiped out because Fields was about 3 yards beyond the line of scrimmage when they threw theFieldspass.had the Bears’ lone touchdown but went just 7 of 11 for 70 yards passing with an interception. Darnell Mooney was limited to one catch for minus-4 yards.

On the biggest play of the game, the Bears again didn’t give the ball to Montgomery, though they could hardly be blamed for relying on the bruising Fields to try to score himself from less than yard away.

Montgomery’s effort not enough in Bears’ loss to Packers

By Steve Megargee Associated Press

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — David Montgomery made things happen for the Chicago Bears just about every time he touched the ball.

After that drive, the Bears wouldn’t get another first down until about eight minutes remained in the third quarter. By that time, they trailed 24-7.

The Bears entered the night ahead of the Packers in the division standings for the first time since 2018 but squandered an opportunity to put the three-time defending NFC North champions in an earlyTheyhole.instead lost to the Packers for a seventh consecutive time.

“The o-line did a great job creating some space and I kind of just hit what I saw,” Montgomery said.

“We had that first drive was excellent, scoring that touchdown, and then we had three drives right there where we got

The Bears still threatened to make a game of it as they finally started getting the ball more to Montgomery, who ran for 89 yards on 10 carries. Montgomery has a history of success at Lambeau Field, as he ran for 103 yards and had a touchdown catch in a 41-25 loss at Green Bay in 2020.

Chicago trailed 24-10 in the fourth quarter when the Bears had an appar ent 6-yard touchdown run by Fields overturned because replays determined he was down before stretching his arm across the goal line.

“I saw a touchdown,” Montgomery said of the fourth-down stop. “I was right next to the ball. But I wouldn’t expect anything less. We’re not in Soldier Field, home-field advantage, so next time we’ve just got to be sure that we put it in. No question marks.”

Sports

“I don’t know what he ate today, but he was running the ball crazy,” Bears quarterback Justin Fields said.

The Bears took a 7-3 lead midway through the first quarter as Fields’ 3-yard touchdown keeper capped a seven-play, 71-yard drive.

“David Montgomery is a premier back in this league,” Packers coach Matt LaFleur said. “His ability to break tackles and just how hard he runs, it’s pretty impressive to watch.

The Rock River Times. September 21, 20226

Everything got excruciatingly difficult for the next hour or so.

Montgomery had four carries for 38 yards in that series. He had just one run for minus-5 yards the rest of the first half as sacks and penalties forced the Bears into long-yardage situations and kept them from running the ball.

Montgomery had just one carry in that decisive second quarter but still finished with 122 yards on 15 carries.

“It’s frustrating,” Montgomery said. Montgomery, Fields and the rest of the Bears’ offense made things look easy on their first possession of the night.

Responding to an energy crisis

During the energy crisis of the 1970s and ‘80s widely available booklets and pamphlets provided information on energy conservation. A recent article

The best step you can take in ID-ing an apple is to look for documentation for when you planted it. If you are just starting an orchard, have documentation for future homeowners/relatives. My grandparents established their backyard orchard in the 1980s and kept a map for their 70 trees. It was updated regularly as they removed trees.

Little consideration is given to the notion of what happens to a society if an assumed endless supply of low cost energy is no longer available. With the cuto of cheap natural gas, oil, grain and fertilizer from Russia, countries of the EU are faced with the economic

The energy crisis will also impact food supplies. To ensure a measure of food security fruits, vegetables and meats can be preserved for winter consumption. Planning what foods can be grown in fall to supplement winter food supplies can help families live comfortably during meager times.

If I didn’t have this map though, I at least know that these trees were planted in the mid to late 1980s. This means that with some research I could eliminate some apple varieties that were not as popular or unavailable based on the age of the tree.

ID-ing your apples

Our stress on energy conservation as an important fi rst step in the transition to cleaner energy sources comes from the recognition that our current level of consumption is not sustainable. Too great a range of environmental damages is caused by existing levels of consumption to be exclusively addressed by a transition to cleaner energy sources.

Fairly recently candidates for the presidency from both parties had negatively labeled a substantial portion of the U.S. population as useless eaters or as takers living o the work of producers. The question is how they will be treated in the world faced with declining energy supplies and intensified impacts of climate change.

During the earlier energy crisis Illinois developed Home Energy Savings, a booklet which informed citizens how to cut their energy consumption. A similar booklet should be made available now for citizens to assist in dealing with the current energy crisis. Bob provided copies of the booklet to students in his energy conservation classes. They did energy audits on their homes and churches to determine opportunities to increase insulation and used watt meters to determine electrical consumption of appliances and identify how to use them more eciently. They thought of ways to reduce the number of miles they drove each day. The eort was directed at determining how they could change their behavior while still living comfortable lives.

that were even planted in the last 5 years, all without proper identification. Further, varieties have similar genetic, parental lines and appearances which makes it dicult to narrow down. One year, I tried my hand at ID-ing an apple that came into our Illinois Extension oce. I narrowed it down to 10-14 dierent varieties. It’s just that complicated.

Much of the information to cut home energy consumption is available now on the internet; necessary supplies are

BY GRANT MCCARTY CONTRIBUTOR

According to energy experts, the world in which we live is the result of the tremendous consumption of available fossil fuels. Fuels to power the industrial machinery along with human labor produce volumes of goods and services that were unavailable to earlier generations. The energy of fossil fuels was and continues to be the major factor accounting for the current production. These increases led to a belief that human creativity will continue to create endless progress. Technological progress is leading to an automated society in which very few people will need to continue to work.

The Rock River Times. September 21, 20228 ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

When nuclear energy was first promoted for electrical production, customers were promised that it would be too cheap to meter. That promise was never fulfi lled. The current promise is that the transition to cleaner energy sources will provide an energy system which is clean, reliable, less costly and widely available. Whether that goal is fulfi lled will be revealed over time. Reaching the goal is more likely be to occur if an aggressive energy conservation eort is pursued at the same time. The least costly and least damaging source of energy is that which is neither produced nor used.

Grant is the Local Food and Smalls Farms Educator of the University of Illinois Extension.

We can anticipate that energy and food supplies are likely to be limited and costly through fall and winter. Some experts predict that shortages will continue for years to come based on projections that the peak in energy supplies has been reached. While Federal and state governments have policies to address some of these concerns their emphasis is on increasing the supply of clean energy sources. Far less emphasis has been placed on the long term benefits of conserving energy as opposed to rushing to increase its supply.

We are also faced with high energy and food prices along with delays and shortages of parts and new equipment. In addition to those stresses are the adverse impacts of heat waves, droughts, wildfi res, heavy rains and storms.

Apples will ripen at dierent times during the season. Some are considered early (end of August into September) and others may be late (October). By knowing when the apple is ripe (seeds are dark brown-black), this can be another strategy to determine your apple variety. Combine the knowledge of your ripe apples with those ripe apples from local orchards could help you narrow down your variety.

Color can be the easiest or the most dicult. We know what a ‘Granny Smith’ looks and tastes like. Other apples like ‘Jonathan’, ‘Jonagold’, and others tend to have very similar color. These apples with a mixture of red-yellow-cream tones remain the most dicult to properly ID. An apple can also be stout in appearance, have lenticels (like freckles), and/or have a shine to it that can lead to identification.

If you are very determined for ID-ing your apple, UC Davis can conduct DNA testing on your apple. Note that it can be between $200-300 per variety.

BY DRS. ROBERT & SONIA VOGL ILLINOIS RENEWABLE ENERGY ASSOCIATION CONTRIBUTORS

by John Michael Greer, Before Winter Comes, calls attention to some of the ideas developed to assist individuals and communities in coping with the earlier energy crisis. We particularly liked his suggestion that a program should be developed to teach a wide range of people how to do basic home conservation projects along with adjustments in their lifestyles which will save energy, reduce pollution and cut energy expenses.

stress and discomfort of an energy crisis. European nations already strained with reduced energy supplies and rising prices are left to wonder how dicult life will be through the coming winter. Some government ocials are warning that their citizens will have to endure five to 10 years of hardships caused by energy and food shortages.

available in hardware stores.

During this time of the year, Illinois Extension receives numerous emails and phone calls from homeowners and others asking for assistance to identify the apple varieties they have growing in their area. Sometimes these calls come from new homeowners who have inherited old and established trees. Others have pruned a fruit tree back into shape and now it is producing consistently for them. Whatever the case may be, the guidance for ID-ing is pretty clear: it is very dicult to identify the variety of the apple.

There are 1000s and 1000s of apple varieties and in our area we see apple trees that can be over 50 years old and some

The IRS is offering a rare, second chance this year to avoid the late filing penalty, which can be up to 25 percent of the amount due. It doesn’t waive interest or the penalties for filing late. Still, if you act now, the penalties you’ll avoid can be substantial. This also applies to partnerships, corporations, nonprofit organizations, and LLCs. (A few exceptions do apply.) If you already filed and were penalized for being late, you may qualify for a refund.
