78th Greenwich Village Art Fair Sept. 19 + 20 at Rockford Art Museum in downtown Rockford – The 78th Greenwich Village Art Fair (GVAF) returns Saturday, September 19 and Sunday,September 20—rain or shine—on the grounds of Rockford Art Museum (RAM) at Riverfront Museum Park, 711 N. Judge declines to block Illinois’ ‘medical aid in dying’ law ahead of Sept. 12 start Disability rights advocates alleged law is discriminatory, needs more state oversight By Hannah Meisel

CHIC AGO — A federal judge on Thursday declined to block Illinois’ new “medical aid in dying” law from going into effect this weekend, clearing the way for terminally ill adults to legally seek life-ending medication from physicians. The End-of-Life Options for Terminally Ill Patients Act, or EOLA, which Gov. JB Pritzker signed into law in December after a two-year legislative push, is restricted to adults who have less than six months to live, as determined by two separate physicians. In addition to a mandated waiting period, patients must undergo an evaluation finding they are able to self-administer the drugs, have the mental capacity to make the decision and are not being coerced. The law also prohibits doctors from broaching the subject without the patient first bringing it up. Even so, a group of disability rights advocates, patients and a doctor sued to halt the law ahead of its Sept. 12 effective date, claiming EOLA will lead physicians to push their disabled patients toward what opponents refer to as “assisted suicide.” In courtroom arguments last week, a lawyer for plaintiffs alleged the law will result in the “severe impairment” of the relationship a patient with disabilities has with his or her doctors and is tantamount to discrimination. But U.S. District Judge John Tharp rejected those arguments, writing in his order Thursday that lead plaintiff Ebony Payne, a Chicago resident who is paralyzed from the neck down and suffers from severe asthma, had failed to prove she will suffer irreparable harm when the law goes into effect. “Ms. Payne’s intangible injuries rest on her speculation that physicians in Illinois will decide, en masse, to abandon their existing duties to their patients,” the judge wrote. “She has not persuaded the Court that this is anything other than speculation.” Disability rights advocates and religious groups, particularly those affiliated with the Catholic Church, fought against the EOLA in 2024 and 2025. The statute is also referred to as “Deb’s Law,” named
for former social worker Deb Robertson, a Lombard resident living with an aggressive case of neuroendocrine carcinoma. Illinois is not the only state where disability rights advocates have challenged medical aid in dying laws in court; a similar coalition filed a lawsuit to block New York’s law on the same day in June, but a federal judge dismissed the case in July and the law went into effect last month. EOLA, like other states’ medical aid in dying laws, is modeled after Oregon’s 1997 statute, but Illinois is the first Midwestern state to legalize life-ending medication for terminal patients.
Legal arguments
Thomas Geoghegan, an attorney representing Payne and the other plaintiffs in the lawsuit, argued to Tharp on Friday that a physician who prescribes lethal medication to a patient represents the upending of the Hippocratic oath, a millennia-old pledge doctors make to “first do no harm.” But the judge countered Geoghegan’s impassioned courtroom assertion that “this is not medicine” with the language of the law, which defines life-ending medication as “part of general medical care.” Tharp pointed to the examples of three patients cited in the law, “one still living and two who have died, who wished for Illinois to permit” medical aid in dying “so that they could avoid suffering and pain during their final days.” “Under this view, providing end-of-life care promotes the duty to ‘do no harm’ rather than erases it because failing to alleviate pain and suffering would itself be a cause of harm,” the judge wrote. Plaintiffs also claimed EOLA doesn’t have strong enough oversight from the state to ensure that doctors aren’t cutting corners or coercing their patients into choosing lethal medication over palliative care, despite the law’s mandate on discussing the pros and cons of all end-of-life options with their patients. But Tharp didn’t buy that argument either, reasoning that the plaintiffs “cannot show that doctors will act ‘predictably’ in response to the Act because of the broad discretion it gives doctors.” The judge pointed to “an entire section” of the law that spells out physicians’ rights to decline participating in prescribing life-ending drugs — and not face any discipline for their choice.
He also noted Payne’s strong opposition of EOLA in a personal capacity and her conviction to never choose it for herself. “Thus, there is no basis on which to speculate that any doctor, let alone one who encounters Ms. Payne or disabled members of the plaintiff organizations, will even be a provider of end-of-life care under the Act,” Tharp wrote. Payne, who attended last week’s arguments wrapped in a blanket in her wheelchair, said in a statement Thursday that she was “disappointed” in Tharp’s ruling, maintaining it “ removes the duty of physicians in Illinois to ‘do no harm’ and sets up a system where a physician can assist in killing a patient without oversight or accountability.” In ruling against their motion for a preliminary injunction Thursday, Tharp gave plaintiffs 30 days to make their arguments for why the case shouldn’t be dismissed altogether.
Separate religious challenges
In a separate challenge to EOLA filed last month by religiously affiliated healthcare systems and doctors, another federal judge in Chicago approved a temporary restraining order agreed to by all parties. The stipulated TRO exempts the plaintiffs from having to discuss lethal medication with patients until the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals decides a case concerning similar themes. In that case, stemming from a 2016 law requiring that, if requested by the patient, providers who don’t perform abortions must refer, transfer to or give patients written information about providers who do. A federal judge in Rockford issued a mixed ruling in the case last year, which the parties swiftly appealed. The appellate panel heard arguments this spring and could issue a ruling any time now. Also last week, the Midwest’s highest-ranking Catholic official, Chicago Cardinal Blase Cupich, filed a separate lawsuit on the same grounds. In court filings Thursday, attorneys for all parties indicated the two cases would likely be consolidated. Madison’s Olbrich Botanical Gardens By Charles Herbst Contributor
Madison’s Olbrich Botanical Gardens is a delightful place to visit any time of year. When the weather is inclement, the attached Bolz Conservatory is a refuge. One of the most stunning sights at Olbrich is to see the Thai Pavilion surrounded by a blanket of snow in bright sunshine. Special events are held throughout the year, including plant sales and exhibits outdoors and in the indoor pavilion. Each year, Olbrich Gardens donates over 1000 pounds of produce from their vegetable gardens to local food pantries. Both Olbrich Botanical Gardens’ 16 acres of outdoor gardens and the pyramid-shaped Bolz Conservatory are located in Madison’s Olbrich Park. There are 1500 species of plants in the outdoor gardens and 850 in the conservatory. Olbrich Gardens and the surrounding Olbrich Park are named after Michael B. Olbrich. Olbrich was born locally in Chemung, Illinois and was a Madison attorney. (Many members of the Olbrich family still live in the Harvard and Chemung vicinity.) Olbrich was concerned that Madison’s east side was industrializing, and that residential areas on that side of the city were lacking open
space. He envisioned a sweeping park and flower gardens on the northeast shore of Lake Monona. In 1921, Olbrich donated the land, which included 3,500 feet of Lake Monona shoreline to the City of Madison for a park and flower garden. Olbrich died in 1929 at the age of 48, and Madison named the park in his honor. Olbrich Gardens opened in 1952. Olbrich Gardens is famous for its Royal Thai Pavilion. It is a gift of the King of Thailand in 2001 to the University of Wisconsin—Madison in recognition of Thai students who attend UW and the Thailand-UW relationship. The gold leaf treatment and Thai royal seal make the pavilion unique. Visiting the Bolz Conservatory, it is easy to find something surprising in a tropical, intense rain forest with multi-level walkways. While there, I saw bananas, cacao and coffee trees in bloom. (Hot chocolate, anyone?) Also in bloom were orchids and calamondin oranges. There were also many spices, including cinnamon. Near the center of the Gardens near the Great Lawn is the Tower Garden, which features several fountains. Historically, the Gardens were home to a hybrid tea rose garden. In 2016, the decision was
made to remove the rose garden because of the need for regular pesticide spraying and the harm that pesticides cause natural pollinators. A goal of the garden is to manage the facility in a more natural, environmentally friendly way. Two Monarch butterflies tagged at Olbrich have been found in Mexico. One of the original gardens is the Sunken Garden, which has a view of Lake Monona. The Great Lawn and the Event Garden provide space for concerts and other programs that the garden sponsors. The Birch Walk and adjacent Starkweather Creek Shade Garden followed by the Woodland Garden provide the setting for a leisurely stroll. A Rain Garden and Gravel Garden provides a different twist. Over time, new gardens and structures have been added, with the most dramatic being the Bolz Conservatory in 1991 and the Thai Garden east of Starkweather Creek in 2002. A dedicated educational space, the Frautschi Family Learning Center, and new greenhouses were built in 2020. Olbrich has over a dozen sculptures throughout the garden. These include lions and elephants in the Thai Garden and other garden-related sculptures.
Most recently, Olbrich Gardens plans to once again expand and renovate. Essentially, the area near the Thai Pavilion east of Starkweather Creek will be developed. The Bolz Conservatory will also be updated. The goal is to construct new facilities without impairing the visitor experience. Once the expansion is completed, the Gardens will feature another bridge over Starkweather Creek and multiple entrances to the gardens in order to better tie the facility to the rest of Olbrich Park and improve access to the nearby Garver Feed Mill. Olbrich Gardens is located at 3330 Atwood Avenue on the northeastern shore of Lake Monona, just east of the isthmus. It is open daily from 10AM through 6PM from April to September, and 10AM until 4PM the rest of the year. Admission to the gardens and parking is free. There is a direct Madison bus (Route C) from both University Hospital and the State Capitol. There is a modest $6.00 admission charge for the Bolz Conservatory. Admission to Bolz Conservatory is free on Wednesday and Saturday mornings. The Gardens are operated by a public-private partnership between the City of Madison Parks Division and the Olbrich Botanical Society. Website: Olbrich.org.

Saudi pipeline hit by drones will be out of service for weeks, further restricting oil flow By Samy Magdy Associated Press
CAIRO (AP) — A crucial Saudi oil pipeline that was struck in an attack will mostly be out of service for weeks as the damage is repaired, two regional officials said Monday, as Yemen’s Houthi rebels seized more islands along Red Sea shipping routes in a new blow to Saudi Arabia’s oil exports. Oil prices gained more than 2% amid growing worries about global petroleum supplies as the new developments strained efforts by Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest exporter, to get its crude to market. The Iran war has forced the kingdom to shift its exports away from the Persian Gulf, since Iranian attacks have stifled shipping through the gulf’s sole exit, the Strait of Hormuz. So the kingdom has relied on the East-West Pipeline, which runs 1,200 kilometers (745 miles) across the breadth of the country, to move its crude production from Gulf ports to ports on the Red Sea. From there it can be put on tankers for export. But authorities were forced to shut down the pipeline after an attack Thursday that Saudi Arabia blamed on drones from Iranian-backed militias in Iraq. Repairing the damage, including at a major pumping facility, could take three to five weeks, the officials, who have been briefed on the matter, told The Associated Press. The line may work partially during the repairs, one of the officials said, but they could not say how much oil might get through. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to brief the media. The pipeline appeared to be moving about 4 million barrels of oil a day, about 4% of total world oil supplies, based on the amount being exported per day from its Red Sea outlet, the port of Yanbu, according to a report earlier this year by Allison Minor, director of the Atlantic Council’s Project for Middle East Integration. The pipeline has a total capacity of up to 7 million barrels per day. The Saudi oil company Aramco, which operates the pipeline, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. The government-run Center for International Communication, which oversees foreign media in the kingdom, said it was looking into an AP inquiry about how long it will take to repair the pipeline.
Houthis’ grab of islands strengthens hold on a key outlet from the Red Sea
Meanwhile, Yemen’s Iranian-backed Houthi rebels continued to expand their threat to Saudi shipping routes out of the Red Sea by capturing the strategic islands of Greater and Lesser Hanish, government and Houthi officials said Monday. The islands lie 160 kilometers (100 miles) north of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The strait is a choke point that connects the Red Sea to the open ocean and Saudi Arabia’s key Asian markets. The Houthis’ advance also puts them just 20 miles (32 kilometers) from the U.S. military base in the tiny Horn of Africa nation of Djibouti, on the other side of the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. For more than a month, the Houthis have been striking Saudi oil infrastructure and shipping in the Red Sea, stepping up pressure on global oil prices and boosting Iran’s leverage in its war with the United States. The Houthi advances have seemed to come with little resistance from Saudibacked Yemeni government forces. The rebels deployed on the Hanish islands after hundreds of government-allied forces withdrew from the archipelago, according to two government officials and a Houthi official. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to journalists. Last week, the rebels seized the port city of Mokha and the island of Mayun, inside the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Government forces are now attempting to rally and fight back. On Sunday, the military said it launched airstrikes on Houthi positions in Mokha, the coastal town of Dhubab and elsewhere in Taiz province.
Houthi cross-border attacks continue
A rebel spokesman said the Houthis fired dozens of missiles and drones at the King Khalid Air Base in the southern Saudi city of Khamis Mushait, targeting hangars, radar installations and ammunition depots. The statement on Monday by Brig. Gen. Yahya Saree did not specify when the attack took place, but the Houthis often take hours or days to claim responsibility for attacks. Saudi authorities sounded sirens in Khamis Mushait and the nearby city of Abha on Sunday afternoon, warning residents to take shelter from potential
incoming fire. Both areas, near the border with Yemen, were repeatedly attacked by the Houthis in recent weeks. One projectile hit in an area near the border close to the Red Sea, injuring two people and damaging a mosque, Saudi civil defense said. There was no immediate comment from Saudi Arabia on the Houthi claim of striking the base.
Thousands of Yemenis are fleeing the fighting
The fighting in Yemen is pushing the impoverished nation back into fullfledged civil war, after a truce that largely maintained quiet since 2022. Even as they advance along the Red Sea, the Houthis have waged an offensive farther inland, particularly in the longtime battleground province of Taiz. Some 150 civilians have been killed in fighting since Sept. 3, including a pregnant woman killed Saturday in a village in Taiz province, the government’s Human Rights Ministry said. More than 200 civilians have been wounded, it said. Thousands of families have fled their homes in Taiz and nearby provinces in the past day, said Khanzad Shah, acting head of Islamic Relief, a charity that operates in the area. “Many of them don’t have enough food or water as they had to flee with whatever they could carry. In some areas, whole villages have reportedly emptied,” he said. The United Nations has estimated that more than 80,000 people have been displaced in the past two weeks, including over 2,000 people who fled by boat to Djibouti. The fighting threatens to reignite a war that for more than a decade brought disaster to Yemen, killing more than 150,000 people and driving the country to the brink of famine. Since 2014, the Houthis have controlled the north, including the capital, Sanaa, and much of the western heartland of the country where most of the population is located. T he i nte r n at ion a l ly r e c og n i z e d government, backed by an array of disparate militias, controls the south and east, including the key southern port of Aden. For years, Saudi Arabia waged a destructive air campaign against the Houthis, while backing the government and allied militias. But it has appeared reluctant to throw itself fully back into the war, despite the Houthi attacks on oil infrastructure and shipping.

Attorney general reaches settlement to reduce Nicor Gas request by 63% By Maggie Dougherty

CHICAGO — Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul’s office and consumer watchdog groups reached a settlement this week with Nicor Gas to cut $140 million, or 63%, from the gas utility’s rate increase request. The agreement, if approved by regulators, would now add around $2 on average to residential customers’ monthly gas bills — down from the $6 expected under the original $221 million rate request Nicor filed in January. The rate increase proposal drew protests from utility watchdogs, who slammed the company for requesting an “exorbitant” shareholder profit rate. The original request would have reflected a 14.5% increase over current rates for Nicor’s 2.3 million natural gas customers in northern Illinois. At the time, Nicor said the investments were needed to enhance the reliability of its natural gas distribution system, particularly through extreme weather, and to remain in compliance with state and federal regulations. Gas utilities deliver natural gas to consumers at market rates and make money on the delivery of the gas, not on the gas itself. Consumer advocates and the AG’s office challenged the spending in Nicor’s request, alleging that significant portions were unnecessary in the short-term. Under the settlement, Nicor agreed to reduce its shareholder profit rate to 9.48%, down from the 10.35% it sought, and pledged to consider alternatives to traditional pipeline replacement. The company also agreed to withdraw its appeal of its prior-year rate case, which regulators reduced by nearly 50%. “Dismissing the appeal protects Nicor customers from possible future rate increases if Nicor were successful in court,” Raoul’s office said in a statement.
Union jobs, capital spending
Raoul’s office also signed a secondary deal with Nicor to secure organized labor protections. It commits Nicor to maintaining 2026 union staffing levels through the end of 2027 and continuing capital investment levels, as commercially reasonable. “Our settlement ensures Nicor can continue to retain good jobs in Illinois while protecting consumers from drastic rate increases,” Raoul said in a statement announcing the deal.
Andy Nacke, president of IBEW Local 19, cheered the labor protections in the news release, saying the deal reflected “the importance of labor continuing to have a seat at the table.” But consumer and environmental advocates that were party to the main agreement were not part of the supplemental labor deal. For Abe Scarr, director of Illinois Public Interest Research Group, or PIRG, the labor agreement is “bad policy and a misstep” by the attorney general’s office. “We shouldn’t be basing ut ilit y policy based on the number of jobs it’s creating. It’s not a jobs program, it’s a public service,” Scarr said, adding, “We shouldn’t be doing bad projects that are harmful, like overinvesting in fossil fuel infrastructure, just to maintain a job.” Scarr also said it was a mistake to commit Nicor to high levels of infrastructure spending, when both the AG’s office and consumer advocates have for years accused the utility of wasteful infrastructure spending. Scarr and Rob Kelter, a senior attorney at the Environmental Law & Policy Center, said the policy could make it easier for the company to argue for a future rate increase to justify inflated spending levels, rather than incentivizing it to look for ways to save. “When you cement into the deal that they’re going to spend every penny in their budget that they’ve committed to spend on the capital side, that means that you’re not sending the signal to the utility that you need to be prudent,” Kelter told Capitol News Illinois. Drew Hill, a spokesperson for the AG’s office, told Capitol News Illinois in an email the settlement was about prioritizing spending. “We believe that more of Nicor’s revenues should be spent on workers’ wages rather than shareholder profits, and the supplemental agreement ensures that,” Hill said.
Compromise for customer control
Advocates did largely cheer a provision in the settlement that lowers the monthly fixed gas delivery charge from $21.30 to $15.00, beginning Nov. 16. That charge is paid by all Nicor customers, regardless of how much natural gas they use. Customers also separately pay the supply price of gas and a variable delivery charge based on the amount used. The lower fixed charge will mean that most Nicor customers see lower
bills during the summer. It also gives customers more control over their own gas bills, as a greater portion of their bill will now be determined by how much energy is used. Pumpkin season brings plenty of choices By Grant McCarty Contributor
P umpk in season has a rr ived in Northern Illinois. Over the next several weeks, pumpkin patches, orchards, and farm stands will be filled with pumpkins, gourds, and squash in every shape, size, and color. Despite some stretches of hot weather this summer, many growers are reporting a strong harvest. You should be able to find some great selection now to Halloween. One of the questions I get is what exactly is a pumpkin. In general, pumpkins are simply certain types of winter squash, most often recognized by their orange color and used for carving, decorating, or cooking. There is not a botanical distinction. Gourds are typically grown for ornamental purposes, while many
winter squash varieties are for cooking and storage. If you visit farms for your pumpkins, you will find a wide range of colors as that’s now the trend in pumpkin varieties. While traditional pumpkins remain popular, you’ll also find white pumpkins, blue-gray pumpkins such as ‘Jarrahdale,’ and heirloom varieties like ‘Long Island Cheese’ and ‘Rouge Vif d’Estampes.’ My favorite one right now is ‘Popcorn’ which is a white pumpkin covered in warts that look like popcorn. Many of these unique pumpkins can be used for both display and cooking. When selecting a pumpkin, it helps to decide how you plan to use it. If you’re carving a jack-o’-lantern, look for a pumpkin with a flat bottom, sturdy stem, and relatively smooth surface. For
cooking, choose a smaller pie pumpkin that feels heavy for its size. Regardless of the type, avoid pumpkins with soft spots, cuts, bruises, or broken stems. When my family goes to a pumpkin patch, I always check the stem first. A pumpkin with a healthy, intact stem will typically store longer and hold up better throughout the season. If you grew pumpkins this year, you may be wondering when they are ready as I certainly am with my planting. Mature pumpkins should have developed their full color and a hard rind that resists scratching with a fingernail. Harvest before a hard freeze and leave several inches of stem attached whenever possible. Once pumpkins make it home, a little care goes a long way. Display them in a
cool, shaded location and keep them off wet soil or mulch. Unfortunately, squirrels seem to appreciate fall decorations almost as much as we do. I have regularly had squirrels visit my pumpkin displays. While there is no perfect solution, placing pumpkins near the house and away from wooded cover can sometimes reduce wildlife damage. Whether you’re decorating a front porch, carving with family, or baking a pie, I encourage you to look beyond the traditional jack-o’-lantern pumpkin this fall. Some of the most interesting pumpkins in the patch are also some of the best for the table, and there has never been a better time to explore the colors, shapes, and flavors available from local growers. In our long careers as advocates of environmental reforms we along with others had some success in protecting unique natural areas in the Rock River watershed. We had been active in prairie restoration as well. Other successful environmental efforts included the annual renewable energy fair and the creation of the Rock River Trail initiative. There were federal and state policy actions and private initiatives supporting environmental reforms. The nation appeared on its way to initiate additional environmental reforms working toward a more sustainable society. Instead environmental reforms came under attack with programs, staff and environmental regulations being eliminated as well as formerly protected government lands available to private interests.
In response environmental groups have turned to the courts to protect the environment. Some interests have expressed alarm over the rising threat to the health of the planet and all its life forms. In an article in Science News by Tom Siegfried in April 4th of 2023 he reminded us that civilizations have not lasted forever as the Aztecs, Maya or the Roman Empires and others have experienced. Wars, disease, natural disasters, changes in weather and famine can destroy a dominant power. As a reminder of our potential vulnerability Siegfried provides a list of 10 movies illustrating what he considers credible existential threats. Siegfried’s intent in writing the article was not to cause despair but to motivate people to investigate the dangers we are facing and stimulate appropriate action and inform public policy. Given the massive political power existing in the hands of a small number of people could make things worse for society and
the environment in the rush to pursue their goals. A common concern being expressed by a number of people is how difficult it is to discern what is truth in the media including AI produced information. The speed of change occurring within society is making it more challenging to assess how these changes will impact every day life for the average citizen. Not all news remains difficult to discern. The wildfires, smoke, draughts, heatwaves, floods, the loss of glacial ice, the loss of species diversity, storms, and hurricanes are all in the news with very limited government actions taken in response to them. All the extreme weather conditions are costly in regard to damaging buildings, crops and infrastructure and disrupting essential services, injuring and killing people and animals. Thus far we have fortunately not experienced any storm damage to our home.
Farmers who have rented our fields have met with success as crop production has met their goals. When we bought our farm in 1975 a local banker active in the farm real estate market commented how favorable and stable the climate had been since the 1940s in contrast to earlier years during the dust storms and floods. The recent heat wave has led me to get up at sunrise to mow for a few hours in the early morning before the temperature becomes too hot. We have along with others are loosing old oak trees in our woodland and young trees and are looking for alternative tree species suitable for the changing climate conditions. Future projections indicate that climate change will persist long into the future and we need to be up to meeting the challenge. We can expect more climate challenges as El Nino is becoming increasingly powerful.

Texas rises to No. 1 in AP poll, Ohio State and Oregon tumble and Michigan returns to the Top 25 By Eric Olson Associated Press
The unprecedented comeback by Texas to knock off Ohio State moved the Longhorns to No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 college football poll Sunday and pushed the Buckeyes out of the top five for the first time in two seasons. Oregon, meanwhile, plummeted 15 spots to No. 21, its lowest ranking in four years, after its 39-31 road loss to an Oklahoma State team that had lost 21 straight against Football Bowl Subdivision opponents. Michigan, which fell out of the Top 25 after needing an extra second and second-chance Hail Mary try to beat Western Michigan a week ago, returned to the poll at No. 19 following its 17-10 win over No. 11 Oklahoma. The Sooners dropped 13 spots to No. 24. Texas’ comeback from 20 points down in the fourth quarter to win 24-23 was the largest fourth-quarter rally ever for a win against an AP No. 1 team, according to Sportradar, and avenged a season-opening loss to the Buckeyes a year ago that knocked the Longhorns out of the No. 1 spot. Texas received 56 first-place votes from the voting panel of writers and broadcasters and holds down the No. 1 spot in the regular season for the first time since Oct. 13, 2024.
No. 2 Georgia and No. 3 Notre Dame held their places, Indiana moved up one spot to No. 4 and Miami was bumped up two to No. 5. Ohio State, LSU, Mississippi, Texas A&M and Alabama rounded out the top 10. Five teams besides Texas received at least one first-place vote. Miami got four, Georgia and Indiana three apiece and Notre Dame and LSU one each. Ohio State had been No. 1 in 17 of the previous 20 polls since winning the 2024 national championship. The Buckeyes held the top spot in every regular-season poll last year, slipping to No. 3 after losing to Indiana in the Big Ten championship game and ending at No. 5. They were back to No. 1 in the preseason poll and stayed there until the loss at Texas dropped them to lowest ranking since they were No. 6 entering the 2024 College Football Playoff. Ohio State is 1-3 in its last four games, though each loss came to a top 10 team. Oregon’s fall is the biggest surprise of the season to date. The Ducks came in with a cast of returning stars and a transfer class that raised the program’s hopes of winning its first national championship. But they struggled to beat Boise State at home in the opener and then allowed 554 yards and generated just 281 in their first loss to an unranked opponent since 2021. Alexander Zverev beats Ben Shelton to win the US Open title and extend a drought by American men By Brian Mahoney Associated Press
NEW YORK (AP) — Alexander Zverev knew what he was up against, playing a U.S. Open final in a stadium full of people desperate to at last see another American champion. He tuned out the screams for Ben Shelton for so long that he didn’t even realize when he won, not hearing the chair umpire’s announcement that the match was over. “In that moment I was in the zone, a lot,” Zverev said. “I didn’t hear noise at all. I was in this kind of tunnel where I just didn’t hear anything.” Zverev used that focus to win a second major championship and prevent a first Grand Slam title by an American man since 2003, beating Shelton 6-3, 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-2 on Sunday. Zverev finally broke through in the majors by winning this year’s French Open and followed up by adding the title in New York that he so painfully let slip away in 2020. The No. 1 seed in a Grand Slam for the first time, he capitalized on Shelton’s shaky start in his first major final, played a nearly flawless tiebreaker on serve and then turned back a comeback attempt in front of a crowd that feverishly cheered Shelton on — including girlfriend Trinity Rodman, who made it from her own soccer match in Washington before the finish. “I know today 99.9% of the people wanted Ben to win, so I’m very sorry first of all,” Zverev said during the trophy presentation. “But second, it was an incredible atmosphere to play in. Even though I know that the crowd was against me, the crowd was always incredibly fair.” Shelton was trying to win the first title by an American man since Andy Roddick won in Flushing Meadows in 2003, as well as become the first Black player to win the men’s crown since Arthur Ashe in 1968. “It’s such a cool moment. Walking out on that court today, there’s nothing like it. I’ve never felt anything like that before,” Shelton said. But Zverev was too good in majors this year and apparently didn’t even know how good he was. After hitting a serve winner, he dropped back behind the baseline as if set to return. Zverev, who later explained he thought the score was 5-1, eventually did figure out he had won, raising his arms in celebration.

Zverev improved to 25-2 in major matches this year and won $5.5 million, matching the prize earned by women’s champion Elena Rybakina on Saturday as the largest in Grand Slam history. “You’re one of the very best players in the world, maybe the best player in the world this year,” Shelton told Zverev. He thought this title would come in 2020 and still acknowledges it should have. He won the first two sets against Dominic Thiem and got within two points of victory before becoming the first man to blow a two-set lead and lose in the final since 1949. Whatever ghosts were left from then are long gone now. Zverev also reached the final at Wimbledon, falling to Jannik Sinner, and became the No. 1 seed in New York when the top-ranked Sinner had to withdraw with a knee injury. He made the most of opportunities that came when Carlos Alcaraz had to sit out two majors and Sinner missed another, after they played in three straight Grand Slam finals in 2025. “I think God has seen how hard we worked, how much we suffered, how much pain we went through and I think 2026 is the outcome of all the years that happened before,” Zverev said, addressing his team. Shelton had already eliminated the defending champion when he beat No. 2 seed Alcaraz in a five-set quarterfinal that ended at 3:33 a.m., the latest finish in U.S. Open history. But he fell short on Sunday in his attempt to become the first man to beat the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds en route to the U.S. Open title since 1975. The No. 8 seed fell to 0-6 against Zverev, winning a set Sunday for only the second time. The 23-year-old Shelton figures to get more chances, but Americans who have grown tired of waiting to celebrate a men’s title wanted it now.
Shelton’s early struggles and Zverev’s style limit the crowd early
Fans stood and screamed when Shelton emerged from the tunnel before the match, but he didn’t give them any reason to keep the cheers going once play began. Serving first, he lost the opening
two points and then eventually handed the game to Zverev with a double-fault. Zverev maintained that lead the rest of the set, which ended on another doublefault by Shelton. Zverev’s deliberate playing style helped limit the crowd’s effectiveness. Fans are expected to quiet down as a player is preparing to serve and stay quiet until the ensuing point has completed. Zverev bounces the ball a number of times — sometimes around 10, maybe a dozen, others nearly 20, insisting there is no set pattern or plan — before he begins his toss, so it guarantees lengthy stretches of silence. Fans tried to get around that by occasionally cheering when he missed a first serve — another tennis no-no that the chair umpire scolded them for — but Zverev, who said before the match he enjoyed hostile crowds, did not seem affected. Then, with fans chanting “USA! USA!” Zverev turned back Shelton’s chance to even the match in the tiebreaker.
Shelton returned Zverev’s opening serve long, was beaten by a superb passing shot and then came up on the wrong end of a 16-shot rally as Zverev went up 3-0. Zverev then hit serves of 147 mph and 124 mph that Shelton couldn’t get back in play. Shelton cut it to 5-2 and then got a return in play for the only time, but Zverev won the point and then hit another serve at 139 mph to close it out. Shelton kept fighting, at one point diving in an attempt to get a volley back, resting his head on his hands when he couldn’t and then banging his hand to the court. He picked himself back up and finally broke Zverev for the only time to win the third set. But with Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns and number of their teammates in attendance, Shelton couldn’t pull off a championship comeback like those New York Knicks did in June. He was broken to begin the fourth, the second time in the match he dropped his opening service game, forcing him to play from behind again.

Registration ranges from $25 to $45 and includes a T-shirt, finisher medal and Conservatory admission ticket. Guests can also purchase $5 floating lanterns to personalize and release into Eclipse Lagoon.

The outdoor fair features juried artists, live music, free family art activities, a local vendor marketplace, food trucks, cocktails and more. Established in 1948, it is the longest-running art fair of its kind in the Midwest. All artwork on display is original and created by the exhibiting artists. Admission is $10, $5 for Rockford Art Museum members and free for children ages 12 and under.

RSO Opening Night: The Planets

Violinist Philippe Quint also joins the orchestra for music from Cinema Paradiso, Schindler’s List and more. The concert runs from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. Tickets start at $35 for adults and $20 for students. Youth ages 6 to 18 receive free admission to all RSO Masterworks concerts.
