Gun rights group sues Highland Park Challenges ban on assault weapons, high-capacity magazines

SPRINGFIELD – A gun rights group is challenging the city of Highland Park’s ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines like the ones used in a mass shooting there on July 4.

The National Association for Gun Rights, based in Loveland, Colorado, filed the lawsuit Wednesday in federal district court in Chicago at the same time it filed lawsuits challenging a similar ordinance in Naperville as well as state laws in Massachusetts, Connecticut and Hawaii.

The cases were filed in district courts that are part of five different federal appellate circuits. Illinois is part of the 7th Circuit. In a statement Thursday, the group said it is pushing for a national precedent to end all similar bans across the country.

“Our mission has always been to expand pro-gun precedents and defend gun owners,” Hannah Hill, research and policy director for the National Foundation for Gun Rights, the association’s legal defense fund, said in the statement. “The brilliant decision from (U.S. Supreme Court) Justice (Clarence) Thomas this summer has provided us with the ammo to free millions of law-abiding Americans who are being unjustly denied their gun rights.”

In the lawsuits, the gun rights group

rejects the use of the term “assault weapon,” calling it a “charged political term meant to stir the emotions of the public” and instead uses the term “banned firearm.”

The lawsuits allege that the bans violate the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. They cite recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions, including a 2008 decision overturning Washington D.C.’s ban on handguns, a 2010 decision overturning similar handgun bans in Chicago and Oak Park, and a decision from June of this year overturning the state of New York’s law requiring people to show “proper cause” for obtaining a firearm license.

On July 4, Robert Crimo III, 21, allegedly took an assault-style weapon and three large-capacity magazines onto a rooftop in downtown Highland Park and fired into an Independence Day parade, killing seven people and wounding dozens of others. He is being held without bond on multiple counts of first-degree murder.

Prior to that shooting, Highland Park had an ordinance dating back to 2013 banning the sale or rental of assault weapons or “assault ammunition feeding devices,” definitions of which are spelled out in the law. The city of Naperville adopted a substantially similar ordinance in August, specifically in response to the mass shooting in Highland Park and an earlier shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

Highland Park’s ordinance, however, was previously challenged in federal court, and in 2015 a three-judge panel of

the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously upheld the ordinance.

In their opinion, the judges specifically cited the 2010 Supreme Court case from Washington, D.C., in which Justice Antonin Scalia, writing for the majority, said the Second Amendment does not guarantee a right “to keep and carry any weapon whatsoever in any manner whatsoever and for whatever purpose,” and noted that the court cautioned against interpreting the decision too broadly.

“We remain confident that the assault weapon ban that the city of Highland Park adopted in 2013 is lawful and constitutional, and that the affirmation of constitutionality by the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals remains controlling precedent in our jurisdiction,” the city’s attorney, Steven M. Elrod, said in an email statement.

Since the Highland Park shooting, Democratic Gov. JB Pritzker has called for both a state and national ban on assault weapons. A bill pending in the Illinois House by Rep. Maura Hirschauer, D-Batavia, that would impose a statewide ban has 56 cosponsors.

ROCKFORD, IL – The 2022 Mosaic World Film Festival (MWFF) has scheduled its lineup of 78 films for its 15th annual event to be held at the RPL Nordlof Center in Rockford, Illinois from September 16–18.

This year’s selections were curated from hundreds of submissions and 57 countries around the world, including this year’s MWFF Spotlight Feature Award winner “The Justice of Bunny King” directed by Gaysorn Thavat and starring Essie Davis and Thomasin McKenzie.

The 15th annual Mosaic World Film Festival will take place September 16, 17, and 18 at the Nordlof Center, 118 N. Main St., in Rockford. A full schedule of the screenings and films is available at mosaicfilmfest.com.

There will be 2 receptions in addition to the film screenings. The 1st will be on Friday night, September 16 at 6 p.m. as the fest will hold the Opening Night Event, with complimentary appetizers and drinks. There will even be a cake to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the event! The 2nd reception is the annual Filmmakers Reception to be held on Saturday night, September 17 at 6 p.m.

This event will also have complimentary appetizers and drinks, and many of the regional filmmakers will be in attendance. At that night’s regional filmmaker screening we will have Q and A sessions with the filmmakers in attendance.

Ukraine makes more gains, pushes back to border in places

KHARKIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian troops reclaimed a wide swath of territory from Russia on Monday, pushing all the way back to the northeastern border in some places as part of a lightning advance that forced Moscow to make a hasty retreat from occupied land.

As blue-and-yellow Ukrainian flags fluttered over newly liberated towns, the Ukrainian military said its troops had freed more than 20 settlements in 24 hours. In recent days, Kyiv’s forces have captured territory at least twice the size of greater London, according to the British Defense Ministry.

After months of little discernible movement on the battlefield, the momentum has lifted Ukrainian morale and provoked rare public criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war. While Ukrainian cities began emerging from Russian occupation, a local leader alleged that the Kremlin’s troops had committed atrocities against civilians there similar to those in other places seized by Moscow.

“In some areas of the front, our defenders reached the state border with the Russian Federation,” said Oleh Syniehubov, governor of the northeastern Kharkiv region. Over the weekend, the Russian Defense Ministry said troops would be pulled from two areas in that region to regroup in the eastern region of Donetsk.

There were reports of chaos as Russian troops abruptly pulled out.

“The Russians were here in the morning. Then at noon, they suddenly started shouting wildly and began to run away, charging o� in tanks and armored vehicles,” Dmytro Hrushchenko, a resident of recently liberated Zaliznychne, a small town near the eastern front line, told Sky News of the quick withdrawal.

Video taken by the Ukrainian military showed soldiers raising the Ukrainian flag over battle-damaged buildings.

In one scene, a fighter wiped his boots on a Russian flag on the ground. Other videos showed Ukrainians inspecting the wreckage of Russian military vehicles, including tanks.

E�orts to disarm land mines were underway in the recaptured areas, along with a search for remaining Russian troops, Ukrainian military o�cials said.

It was not yet clear if the Ukrainian blitz could signal a turning point in the war, although some analysts cautioned that

fighting would likely go on for months.

Momentum has switched back and forth before, but rarely with such a big and sudden swing.

The mood was jubilant across the country.

In Kharkiv, authorities hailed that power and water had been restored to about 80% of the region’s population following Russian attacks on infrastructure that knocked out electricity in many places across Ukraine.

“You are heroes!!!” Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov wrote on Telegram, referring to crews who restored utilities in Ukraine’s second-biggest city. “Thanks to everyone who did everything possible on this most di�cult night for Kharkiv to normalize the life of the city as soon as possible.”

The buoyant mood was also captured by a defiant President Volodymyr Zelenskyy late Sunday on social media.

“Do you still think you can intimidate, break us, force us to make concessions?”

Zelenskyy asked. “Cold, hunger, darkness and thirst for us are not as scary and deadly as your ‘friendship’ and brotherhood.’”

In the end, he exclaimed: “We will be with gas, lights, water and food … and WITHOUT you!”

Meanwhile, in Russia, there were some signs of disarray as Russian military bloggers and patriotic commentators chastised the Kremlin for failing to mobilize more forces and take stronger action against Ukraine.

Russia has continuously stopped short of calling its invasion a war, instead describing it as a “special military operation” and relying on on a limited contingent of volunteers instead of a mass mobilization that could spur civil discontent and protest.

Ramzan Kadyrov, the Moscow-backed leader of the Russian region of Chechnya, publicly criticized the Russian Defense Ministry for what he called “mistakes” that made the Ukrainian blitz possible.

Even more notable, such criticism seeped onto state-controlled Russian TV. “People who convinced President Putin that the operation will be fast and e�ective ... these people really set up all of us,” Boris Nadezhdin, a former parliament member, said on a talk show on NTV television. “We’re now at the point where we have to understand that it’s absolutely impossible to defeat Ukraine using these resources and colonial war methods.”

Pro-Kremlin separatists reported that Ukrainian troops were approaching a key

rail junction in the eastern Ukrainian Donetsk region.

Denis Pushilin, head of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, told Russian television that Ukrainian troops were mounting assaults on the town of Lyman, a rail hub captured by Russia in late May that o�ers access to bridges over the nearby Siversky Donets river.

Pushilin said that pro-Kremlin soldiers “are holding them back, and the situation, despite the fact that it remains di�cult, remains controllable.”

The Donetsk region is one of two that make up Ukraine’s industrial heartland known as the Donbas, which continues to be a key target of Russia’s o�ensive.

Even amid Ukraine’s ebullience, the casualties kept mounting. Ukraine’s presidential o�ce said Monday that at least four civilians were killed and 11 others wounded in a series of Russian attacks in nine regions of the country. The U.N. Human Rights O�ce said last week that 5,767 civilians have been killed so far.

Strikes in Kharkiv continued during daylight Monday when an administrative facility in the center of the city was hit by a missile, setting part of it on fire and killing one person, regional Police Chief Volodymyr Tymoahko said. Teams of firefighters battled flames licking the roof from the top floor as smoke billowed above the area.

In a reminder of the war’s toll, a council member in Izium — one of the areas where Russia said it has withdrawn troops — accused those forces of killing civilians and other committing atrocities.

“Russian troops committed crimes and tried to hide them,” Maksym Strelnikov

said. His claims could not immediately be verified.

The Ukrainian military also claimed to have found evidence of human rights violations by Russian occupiers. It did not elaborate.

Izium was a major base for Russian forces in the Kharkiv region. The first Ukrainian flag was raised over the city on Saturday, according to Strelnikov, and more have popped up across the whole city. Residents, some wrapped in the country’s flag, happily greeted Ukrainian forces, o�ering them food.

Ukraine said the Russians continued shelling Nikopol across the Dnieper River from the Zaporizhzhia power plant, damaging several buildings there and leaving Europe’s largest nuclear facility in a precarious position. The last operational reactor in that plant has been shut down in a bid to prevent a radiation disaster as fighting raged nearby.

The Washington-based Institute for the Study of War said Monday that Kyiv “will likely increasingly dictate the location and nature of the major fighting.”

The British Defense Ministry said the retreat would likely further deteriorate the trust Russian forces have in their commanders and put Moscow’s troops on the back foot.

Some analysts praised Ukraine’s initial move on the southern Kherson area for drawing the attention of enemy troops there, before pouncing on more depleted Russian lines in the northeast.

Even around Kherson, Russia is struggling to bring forces across the Dnieper to stop the Ukrainian o�ensive there, the British military said.

Reboot

With the television landscape filled w it h c ou nt le ss r e b o ot s, r e v iv a l s, prequels, sequels, and spin-offs, the timing is perfect for Hulu’s new eight-episode comedy, Reboot, created by Steve Levitan, co-creator of Modern Family. It premieres September 20.

From its opening scenes, the premise seems clear: writer Hannah (Rachel Bloom, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend) pitches Hulu executives a modern reboot of Step Right Up, a cheesy network sitcom that ended 15 years earlier. She wants the same cast – Reed Sterling (Keegan-Michael Key, Key & Peele), Bree Marie Jenson (Judy Greer, Archer), Clay Barber (Johnny Knoxville, yes, that Johnny Knoxville), and grown-

up child star Zack Jackson (Calum Worthy) – playing the same characters, only she wants it to be a less traditional comedy in which Reed’s character has a deep secret that could rock his sitcom family.

Each actor has a personal reason for signing on to the show despite having trust issues with one another – especially with Reed, since most of the characters believe Step Right Up was canceled because he left it for an ill-fated movie career, and Clay, whose drug and alcohol abuse all but killed his career. Hannah’s lifelong obsession with the original series comes with its own issues that play out over the course of the season.

The real fun comes from the close-tohome parody of showbusiness, like the never-ending list of movie titles (all puns)

that Zack has made over his brief career, or the behind-the-scenes machinations as Hannah and her team – including Paul Reiser (Mad About You) as Step Right Up’s original creator Gordon, with whom Hannah is forced to work – butt heads over what’s funny.

Given how Levitan previously admitted incorporating incidents from his and his Modern Family writers’ lives into scripts for that show, you have to wonder how many of Reboot’s behind-the-scenes moments may also have been inspired by actual events. Perhaps that’s why the writers’ room scenes tend to be especially funny.

The writers’ room for Reboot’s showwithin-the-show is equally divided between Hannah’s young, edgy writers

and Gordon’s old-school joke writers, which nicely reflects the clash of old and new, past and present, that underscores much of Reboot.

The fact that this Hulu series pokes fun at Hulu itself – from the inexperienced exec (Krista Marie Yu) who previously worked at a tech company, to Hulu’s HR policies, to a revolving door of senior executives – makes it resonate more than had it been set at a fictitious streaming service.

Sitcoms are nothing without arguments, misunderstandings, and stubbornness, and while Reboot is a comedy with plenty of those things, it is not a sitcom. It’s funny, yes, but unlike far too many sitcom characters – including Zack’s Step Right Up character Cody – these characters seem to grow and change a bit with each episode.

Fields throws 2 TDs, Bears top 49ers 19-10 in Eberflus debut

CHICAGO (AP) — Justin Fields rolled to his left with two defenders closing in on him. As his quarterback scrambled one way, Dante Pettis broke toward the opposite side.

Fields saw his receiver wide open. He lofted a pass across the field, and Pettis took it the rest of the way for a 51-yard touchdown that kicked the Bears into gear.

Fields threw for two second-half scores, Eddie Jackson set up a TD with an interception and Chicago gave Matt Eberflus a win in his head coaching debut, beating the San Francisco 49ers 19-10 on a rain-soaked Sunday.

It was a sweet start for a new regime.

The Bears decided to make major changes after last season, when they went 6-11 and missed the playoffs for the ninth time in 11 years.

General manager Ryan Poles and Eberflus took over for the fired Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy. And their first game was a win over a team that played in the NFC championship game last season.

Go figure.

“I’m not surprised. I’m not surprised,” Eberflus said. “I thought the guys executed. I thought that they hung in there.

That’s what you’ve got to do in the NFL. It’s never going to be perfect, it’s always going to be hard. Always. Most times it comes down to the end, just like that.

That’s the way the NFL is.”

Fields shook off a rough first half. The long touchdown to Pettis, a former 49er, with the Bears trailing 10-0 was, he said, “the play that changed the momentum of our game.”

Fields connected with Equanimeous St. Brown for an 18-yarder early in the fourth to put Chicago on top 13-10. Jackson then picked off Trey Lance near midfield for his first interception since 2019 and returned the ball to the 21. That led to a 6-yard touchdown run by Khalil Herbert, making it 19-10.

Fields, the No. 11 overall pick in 2019, was 8 of 17 for 121 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. The former Ohio State star is trying to convince Eberflus and new general manager Ryan Poles he can solidify a position that has long been a weakness for Chicago.

“Coach always says it’s mental and physical stamina,” Fields said. “Who can play the longest, the hardest and just play every play. We won this game with mental and physical stamina.”

San Francisco running back Elijah Mitchell left the game in the first half with

a knee injury and did not return. Niners star tight end George Kittle missed the game because of a groin issue.

Heav y rain flooded the area and drenched t he new Bermuda grass installed this week instead of the traditional Kentucky bluegrass used in a stadium often criticized for its choppy surface. As the final seconds ticked away, Bears players took head-first dives into the drenched end zone.

COMING UP DRY

The Bears also got called for an unusual penalty near the end of the first half, when their holder got flagged for bringing out a towel to dry a small area of the field ahead of a field goal try. Rookie Trenton Gill used a towel to dry the spot where the kick would be attempted. Kicker Cairo Santos also stepped on the towel and used it to dry a different area.

PENALTIES, MISSED CHANCES

The 49ers were hurt by 12 penalties for 99 yards and were just 1 for 3 in the red zone. Combine that with the opportunities they missed, and it wasn’t hard to figure out why they lost.

“You see that in the stat sheet and you know what happened out there,” coach Kyle Shanahan said.

Lance, drafted eight spots ahead of Fields, completed 13 of 28 passes for 164 yards and an interception.

“Man, I made too many mistakes,” he said.

Deebo Samuel ran for a 6-yard score in the second quarter after losing a fumble deep in Chicago territory in the early going. But he caught just two passes for 14 yards.

Nick Bosa added a sack.

“We know what we need to fix,” Samuel said. “We were real good in the locker room as far as people knowing what we need to do to win the game.”

Growing great garlic

As garlic curing ends mid-August to wrap up your 2022 season, we wait 6 more weeks to then turn around and plant garlic for the 2023 season. This quick movement between seasons is expected when growing garlic in Northern Illinois. Garlic is one of the main vegetables (or you might call an herb) that we get questions about throughout the spring and summer. Yet the problem with garlic is that we forget that we need to plant it in the fall where it overwinters and is harvested the end of June. If you do not plant at the right time, you will find that your garlic will not grow well for you.

Garlic should be planted in Northern

Illinois in October. Even if you plant in September and mulch, you may have green growth from the garlic beyond the mulch layer and need to add more mulch.

Any exposure of the green tips to winter may damage your garlic.

One clove will yield one head of garlic.

Basically, this garlic clove is cloning itself to create that garlic bulb. There is a direct correlation between the size of the clove and how the rest of the bulb will develop.

If you plant a small clove, expect small cloves in the bulb you harvest in June 2023. You want a hardneck type as these perform well in Northern Illinois. You might try softneck varieties but know that they still tend to perform poorly even with layers of mulch. Much of that

will depend on our winter.

Hardneck varieties that are recommended are ‘Spanish Roja’, ‘Carpathian’, and ‘Georgian Crystal’. Growers I know also like ‘German Porcelain’, ‘Chrysalis Purple’, and ‘Red Chesnok’.

To get garlic for planting, visit a farmers market in your area and talk to the vendor. If you purchase a head of garlic from them, these cloves can be planted in your garden this fall. Garlic can be ordered online from reputable businesses though shipping can be expensive. However, since you are cloning the garlic clove into a garlic bulb, you can save back bulbs from next summer’s harvest to plant in fall 2022.

As you think about where you want

to plant it, keep in mind that garlic has a long growing season. This space will not be available for crops until June/July of next year.

Garlic should be planted twice the height of the clove with spacing 6-8 inches between. You need to mulch. A good mulch layer of 6-8 inches is needed to provide insulation for the garlic as it develops. You may find that you need to keep laying this down in winter months.

Straw tends to be the best as it allows for protection and air flow. It is not uncommon to have to reapply a mulch in December.

Climate change and renewable energy

Recently we awoke in the early morning to the realization that our grid service was not functioning and we were reliant on electricity stored in the battery pack fed by our solar system. Just as we recognized the problem we looked out and saw a ComEd service man beginning to leave.

He spotted me coming out of the house and informed me we had lost grid power as a squirrel had shorted out the grid and its remains were lying beneath the transformer.

We did not even call ComEd about the disruption in service as the information was relayed back to their computer network indicating where power was lost.

Others have reported similar experiences with their grid service. The new feature is one of the ways in which utilities are upgrading their service.

We are all well aware that the climate around the planet has changed as heat waves, floods, droughts and fires are occurring globally. Beyond the visible impacts of climate change, reports are

regularly updated to document those changes. Of key interest is the notion of tipping points. When a temperature threshold is exceeded, an unstoppable change in climate occurs even if global heating no longer continues.

Of concern is that civilization has developed at temperatures below this level and breaching those levels will force society to decarbonize to accommodate the new climate conditions.

Initiating corrective actions has been delayed by other interests claiming that climate changes do not come about because of rising carbon emissions from burning fossil fuels but rather from natural changes in the earth’s climate.

The United States, considered the major source of historic levels of carbon releases, just passed the Inflation Reduction Act providing incentives to accelerate the transition to cleaner energy sources.

Beyond addressing climate change some energy experts advance the idea that global energy supplies have peaked and civilization will be forced to live with diminished and costly energy supplies.

The solution to both climate change

and peak energy supplies are based on the idea of a rapid transition to cleaner energy supplies. A new study led by Mark Jacobson of Stanford University declares that 145 nations could quickly “switch to 100% renewable energy” using existing technologies. They set a goal of having 80% of their renewable energy operating by 2030.

A new study released by the National Renewable Energy Lab claims that the U.S. could decarbonize its grid in 13 years while saving $1.2 trillion through “avoided health and climate costs.” Four scenarios are developed with cooperation of the U.S. Department of Energy.

A few years ago our relatives in Germany pointed out a small community that installed a renewable energy system to power their community while selling excess electricity back to the grid. These early e�orts have spread to over 7000 other communities as citizens became determined to accelerate their own transition to renewable energy sources.

Soaring gas and electricity prices have accelerated interest in developing renewable energy at the local level.

The e�ort is focused on decentralizing the energy system and producing and consuming energy from local sources such as wind and solar, installing heat pumps, storing energy and utilizing e�cient energy management systems.

Some communities have been operating such projects for years, inspiring others to emulate them.

The Sunnova Network has an interesting proposal in California for which they hope to secure legislative approval.

The plan to offer renewable energy microgrid community projects. The firm already o�ers customers energy services consisting of rooftop solar, residential battery storage and software to manage a home’s entire energy service. The firm has applied to develop a solar and storage micro-utility in California. It would allow residents, communities and businesses to share excess clean energy to power and temporarily disconnect from utility grid services as needed.

While it will not be owned and operated by local citizens it o�ers another version of increasing decentralization of energy supplies.

‘Clairvoyant’ 2012 climate report warned of extreme weather

Record high temperatures in urban Europe as heat waves bake the planet more often. Devastating floods, some in poorer unprepared areas. Increasing destruction from hurricanes. Drought and famine in poorer parts of Africa as dry spells worsen across the globe. Wild weather worldwide getting stronger and more frequent, resulting “in unprecedented extremes.”

Sound like the last few summers?

It is. But it was also the warning and forecast for the future issued by top United Nations climate scientists more than 10 years ago.

In a report that changed the way the world thinks about the harms of global warming, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s special report on extreme events, disasters and climate change warned in 2012: “A changing climate leads to changes in the frequency, intensity, spatial extent, duration, and timing of extreme weather and climate events, and can result in unprecedented extreme weather and climate events.”

It said there would be more heat waves, worsening droughts, increasing downpours causing floods and stronger and wetter tropical cyclones and simply nastier disasters for people.

“The report was clairvoyant,” said report co-author Michael Oppenheimer, a Princeton University climate scientist.

“The report was exactly what a climate report should do: Warn us about the future in time for us to adapt before the worst stu� happens. And the world proceeded to do what it usually does. Some people and governments listened, others didn’t. I think the sad lesson is the damage has to occur very close to home or else nobody pays attention now.”

In just the United States alone, the number of weather disasters that cost at least $1 billion in damage — adjusted for inflation — went from an average of 8.4 a year in the decade before the report was issued to 14.3 a year after the report came out, with more than a trillion dollars in U.S. weather damage since in just the billion-dollar extremes, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Unprecedented record heat hit Northern California in September and 104 degrees in England (40 degrees Celsius) earlier this summer.

T he 594-page rep or t’s 20-page summary highlighted five case studies of climate risks from worsening extreme weather that scientists said will be more

of a problem and how governments could deal with them. In each case scientists were able to give a recent example: — Flash floods in “informal settlements.” Look at flooding in poor sections of Durban, South Africa, this year, said report co-author and climate scientist Maarten van Aalst, director of the International Red Cross and Crescent Climate Centre in the Netherlands. Or Eastern Kentucky or the Pakistan this year or Germany and Belgium last year, report authors said.

— Heat waves in urban Europe. “We’ve got that one in spades. That’s been consistent,” said Susan Cutter, a University of South Carolina disaster scientist. “I think every year there have been longer periods of heat in Europe.”

— Increasing property losses from hurricanes in the United States and the Caribbean as storms get wetter and stronger, but not more frequent. Oppenheimer pointed to the last few years when Louisiana has been smacked repeatedly by hurricanes, last year when Hurricane Ida killed people in New York because of heavy rainfall flooding basement apartments and 2017 when record rain from Hurricane Harvey paralyzed Houston and Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico with Hurricane Irma in between.

— Droughts causing famine in Africa.

That’s happening again in the Horn of Africa and last year in Madagascar, van Aalst said.

— Small islands being inundated by a combination of sea level rise, saltwater intrusion and storms. That’s tougher, but co-author Kris Ebi, a University of Washington climate and health scientist, pointed to record strong Tropical cyclone Winston striking Vanuatu and Fiji in 2016.

“Right now people are feeling it,” van Aalst said. “It’s no longer the science telling them. All those warnings came true.”

In fact, reality has likely been worse, with more and stronger extremes than the authors would have predicted when they fi nished writing it in 2011 and published it a year later, said co-authors Ebi and Cutter.

That’s partly because when real life played out, disasters compounded and cascaded with sometimes unforeseen side e�ects, like heat waves and droughts causing hydroelectric power plants to dry up, nuclear power plants unable to get cooling water and even coal power plants not getting fuel deliveries because of dried rivers in Europe, scientists said.

“Imagining something scientifically or saying this exists in a scientific

assessment is a radically di�erent thing compared to living it,” said co-author Katharine Mach, a climate risk scientist at the University of Miami. She said it was similar to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Health o�cials had long warned of viral pandemics but when it came true, the lockdowns, school closures, economic consequences, supply chain problems were sometimes beyond what dry scientific reports could envision.

Before this report, the overwhelming majority of climate studies, official reports and debate talked about longterm consequences, the slow but steady rise in average temperatures and sea level rise. Extreme events were considered too rare to study to get good statistics and science and wasn’t seen as a big issue.

Now much of the focus in science, international negotiations and media coverage is about climate change extremes.

Weather disaster deaths both in the United States and globally are generally trending lower, but scientists say that’s

because of better forecasts, warning, preparedness and response. From 2002 to 2011, before the report, the United States averaged 641 weather deaths a year and now the 10-year average is down to 520 on average but 2021 was the deadliest year in a decade with 797 weather fatalities.

At the same time the 10-year U.S. average for heat deaths crept up a bit, from 118 to 135 a year.

“We are adapting fast enough to reduce the impacts,” Cutter said. “We are not reducing greenhouse gas emissions to actually go after the cause of the warming.”

Stanford University climate scientist Chris Field, who led the report project a decade ago, said the scientists got the warnings right, but “we may have been too conservative” in the language used.

In addition to the dry facts and figures presented he wishes he had used wording that would be “grabbing people by the shoulders and shaking them a little bit more and saying these are real risks.”
