Heat wave is the latest of several weather extremes in Illinois

Dangerously high heat follows drought conditions earlier this summer

Illinois is roasting in triple digit temperatures this week, forcing the state and schools to cancel some outdoor activities and modify class schedules.

Every county in Illinois was under an excessive heat warning Thursday morning, with some areas expected to continue to be under advisory until at least Friday evening.

The heat index, a measure that combines air temperature with humidity, reached higher than 128 degrees in Galesburg Wednesday. Chicago’s O’Hare airport recorded an air temperature of 98 degrees, the highest temperature for Aug. 23 since 1947, according to the National Weather Service. The heat index there peaked at 116, just two degrees shy of the record high that came during Chicago’s infamous 1995 heat wave.

“Exposure to extreme heat can cause serious health complications, including heat exhaustion and heatstroke,” IDPH Director Sameer Vohra said in a Tuesday news release. “With dangerously high temperatures and humidity in the forecast, I urge everyone to take precautions and protect themselves and their families from overheating and heat related illnesses.”

Vohra added that very young children, pregnant people, older adults and those with chronic health conditions should be particularly wary.

IDPH issued several guidelines to protect against heatstroke and heat exhaustion, including seeking air-conditioned areas like shopping malls or libraries during the day, wearing lightweight and light-colored fabrics and reducing strenuous and outdoor activities, particularly between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

People experiencing body temperatures above 103 degrees, difficulty breathing, elevated heart rate, skin that is hot to the touch, dizziness, nausea or disorientation should call 911 immediately, IDPH advised.

The state’s emergency management agency also updated its website to point to a list of “cooling centers” around the state compiled by an interagency group, although as of Thursday afternoon the webpage does not list any cooling centers south of Urbana.

The state also canceled several upcoming outdoor events, including the Du Quoin State Fair parade which was scheduled for Friday evening.

“With forecasts projecting a high of 100 degrees and heat indexes between 111 and 117 degrees, we feel canceling the parade is in the best interest of our parade participants,” Illinois Department of Agriculture Director Jerry Costello II said in a Wednesday news release. “This is not to take away from people enjoying the fair safely, but to avoid a clustering of families along the parade route and parade participants in costumes and uniforms from overheating.”

The Department of Agriculture, which manages the fair in Du Quoin, also canceled Thursday’s Illinois Product Farmers Market in Springfield due to the heat.

Other state agencies have also had to adjust to protect workers from the heat, including the Department of Transportation. A department spokesperson said that, in addition to monitoring for pavement buckling, state crews and some contractors have had to adjust their work schedules to avoid the hottest part of the day.

Communities across Illinois are also being forced to alter school schedules to accommodate the heat.

Schools in Champaign-Urbana canceled class Thursday. Champaign’s school district reported “major failures” at two of their largest school campuses. In northern Illinois, Maple Park schools closed, citing “extremely challenging” circumstances for drivers and students on buses.

Beyond academics, schools have also canceled and modified plans for athletic events.

While the Illinois High School Association, which sets rules for high school athletics, does not track changes to athletic events during the regular season, IHSA spokesperson Matt Troha told Capitol News Illinois the heat has had a “significant impact” on IHSA sports.

IHSA requires schools to move practices and games indoors or cancel then if the “wet bulb globe” temperature exceeds 89.9 degrees. Wet bulb globe temperature combines air temperature, sun exposure, humidity and wind.

While the IHSA does not require schools to let them know of changes to athletic schedules, Troha noted that the association was anecdotally aware of many games being moved to later times of day or to different days.

Natural disasters bring federal aid

Before this week’s record heat, much of Illinois experienced severe drought conditions from May through July, with the peak of the drought coming in June.

This led to the federal Department of Agriculture to issue a series of disaster designations. The designations, which are centered on McDonough, McHenry and Mercer counties, are a follow-up to a previous set of disaster designations from earlier this season. The classification allows the USDA to provide emergency loans to farmers recovering from the droughts.

“While we are seeing improvement in drought conditions across the state, we know that crops and livestock have been impacted,” Illinois Department of Agriculture Director Jerry Costello II, said in a news release Wednesday announcing the designations.

Jeff Kirwan, a farmer in Mercer County and board member of the Illinois Farm Bureau, said the droughts have negatively impacted crops in Illinois.

“Especially in June, that’s the most stressful time for farmers,” Kirwan said. “We had a good crop, but then it didn’t rain.”

Kirwan later added that overall, he expects the corn and soybean crop to be around average, although some farmers in areas hit hardest by drought may struggle more.

“The emotion that goes with that was extremely unsettling, very stressful,” he said of the recent drought.

In addition to the heat wave and drought, Illinois has also seen several damaging storms and the most tornadoes of any state so far this year.

A series of severe storms and flooding between June 29 and July 2 also drew the attention of the federal government, with President Joe Biden approving federal assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency. This assistance will go to individuals and businesses in Cook County and can include grants for temporary housing and home repairs and low-interest loans to cover property losses.

“Residents and businesses, especially those on the West Side of Chicago who were most brutally hit, are now able to access additional resources necessary to rebuild and revitalize, and I know Cook County will build back stronger than ever,” Gov. JB Pritzker said in an August 15 news release. .

After Maui officials named 388 people unaccounted for in fires, many called to say they’re OK

Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) — Within a day of Maui County releasing 388 names of people unaccounted for following the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century, more than 100 of them or their relatives came forward to say they’re safe, the FBI said Friday.

The agency is reviewing the information they provided and working to remove the names from the list.

“We’re very thankful for the people who have reached out by phone or email,” Steven Merrill, the FBI’s special agent in charge in Honolulu, said in a news conference. “As we get someone off of a list, this has enabled us to devote more resources to those who are still on the list.”

Several people on the list told The Associated Press earlier in the day that they are alive and well, with a few also saying they were confused or frustrated to be on it. At least two others were among the victims of the fire — people who are known to have perished but have not yet been positively identified as deceased in the official tally, which currently stands at 115.

Arturo Gonzalez Hernandez wound up on the list even though he moved away from Lahaina, the historic seaside community demolished in the blaze, three years ago, and he called the FBI on Friday to provide his name and birthdate. An inaccurate list could cause unnecessary stress, he said.

“Some people are still struggling with the impact of so many people dying,” said Gonzalez, who now lives up the coast near Kapalua.

Terrí Thomas was killed when fire overtook her car as she fled from her apartment with her two dogs and two friends, said her cousin, Tammy Cruz, of Columbus, Georgia. The car became stuck in traffic and only one of the friends escaped. He later told Cruz that Thomas was crying hysterically when he last saw her, the car growing hotter by the second.

Thomas’ niece provided a DNA swab to help identify her remains, Cruz said Friday, but the family hasn’t received notification of her death.

“Her dogs were her world to her,” Cruz said. “I knew she wouldn’t have left her dogs.”

The 388 names represented a portion of

a broader list of up to 1,100 people reported missing that the FBI said earlier this week it was working to validate. Maui County said the newly published list included those for whom it had first and last names as well as verified contact information for someone who reported them missing.

Merrill said there were children on the list but he couldn’t provide a number.

Officials asked anyone who knows someone on the list to contact authorities.

Something similar happened after a wildfire in 2018 that killed 85 people and destroyed the town of Paradise, California. Authorities published a list of the missing in the local newspaper, a decision that helped identify scores of people who had made it out alive but were listed as missing. Within a month, it dropped from 1,300 names to only a dozen.

Heidi Mazur, of Lahaina, told AP she was frustrated to be on the unaccounted-for list when she has been active on Facebook and started an online fundraiser after the fire.

“They will find me in a New York minute if I don’t pay my car registration or taxes, but they can’t seem to locate me in a disaster here in Lahaina!” she said via Facebook Mesenger.

MalamaKai Watson, 40, was not in Lahaina during the fires but on the other side of the island. With cellphone and internet service disrupted, she understood when she first appeared on a grassroots Facebook list of the missing. But she was quickly listed as found after she was able to get in touch with her loved ones.

She was baffled to be on the new, more official list. She called the FBI to say she was safe, but didn’t see any changes online Friday.

“Now it’s annoying,” she said. “There are people on there who are definitely missing. The focus needs to be on the people needing to be found still.”

Seth Alberico, a soccer coach from California’s Bay Area, said his name and his daughter Kalia’s had previously circulated on the unofficial, crowdsourced list, but he didn’t realize they were also on the new “verified” list until AP told him.

“I would love to be taken off the list,” he said. “We are both safe.”

He was staying in a condo on Kaanapali Beach not far from the burn area at the time of the Aug. 8 fire. A former player knew he had been on Maui and knew he had a daughter, and she reported them

missing when she couldn’t reach him on Facebook afterward, he said. His daughter hadn’t even been with him, he said.

He said he sent messages on Facebook and Instagram trying to be taken off the list, to no avail.

An additional 1,732 people reported missing had been found safe as of Thursday afternoon, officials said.

Crews have been searching for remains among the ashes of destroyed businesses and multistory residential buildings. The search will take weeks to complete, with many of the last structures posing complicated challenges, Army Col. David Fielder, deputy commander of the joint task force responding to the wildfires, said in a news conference Friday.

Dozens of searchers have also been combing a 4-mile (6.4-kilometer) stretch of water for signs of anyone who might have perished after climbing over a seawall to try to escape the flames and black smoke enveloping downtown.

Also Friday, officials announced the interim administrator for the county’s emergency management agency, a position that’s been empty since Herman Andaya resigned last week after criticism for not activating disaster sirens during the fires.

Darryl Oliveira, former fire chief and civil defense director for the Big Island, is respected across the state for his management expertise in disasters including hurricanes and lava flows.

He said he wants to earn “trust and confidence” as he helps rebuild Maui’s emergency management system.

Earlier in the week, officials pleaded for relatives of people where were still unaccounted for to come forward and give DNA samples to help identify remains, promising that the samples would not be entered into law enforcement databases or used in any other way. At the time, DNA had been collected from only 104 families, a figure officials described as concerningly low.

Maui Prosecuting Attorney Andrew Martin, who is leading the family assistance center, said there has been a slight increase in the donation of samples since then, but “we’re still not where we want to be.”

Among the many reasons people may be hesitant is a “historical and generational mistrust of the government,” Martin said, referring to a sentiment rooted in the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom.

Ukraine War

Shelling kills civilians in Ukraine’s northeast as fears grow of a second Russian takeover

Associated Press

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russian forces struck a cafe in a key front-line area in northeastern Ukraine Saturday, killing two civilians and wounding a third, regional officials said.

The shelling near the city of Kupiansk came as U.K. officials said that Russia may try to retake the area, which was captured by Kyiv in a lightning counteroffensive last September after more than six months of Russian occupation. Fierce fighting there earlier this month prompted mandatory evacuations and fears of a second Russian takeover.

Russian shells on Saturday morning struck the cafe in Podoly, an eastern suburb of Kupiansk, regional Gov. Oleh Syniehubov said in a Telegram post. He added that rescue teams were working at the site.

U.K. military intelligence on Saturday assessed that Russia may “increase the intensity of its offensive efforts” around Kupiansk and nearby Lyman in an attempt to take pressure off its forces near Bakhmut and in the Zaporizhzhia region, where a Ukrainian counteroffensive has reportedly made gradual gains.

Igor Konashenkov, a spokesman for the Russian defense ministry, said in a regular briefing Saturday that Moscow’s forces had “improved their position along the front line” in the Kupiansk area and repelled five Ukrainian assaults over the previous day. He did not give further details regarding any troop movements.

Earlier this month, Ukrainian authorities ordered a mandatory evacuation of nearly 12,000 civilians from 37 towns and villages around Kupiansk, citing a concerted effort by Russian troops to punch through the front line.

After the Russian occupiers left Kupiansk last year, Ukrainian authorities said they found torture chambers and mass graves in the region.

Ukrainian officials have so far reported limited advances in Kyiv’s large-scale counteroffensive launched in early June, including in the southern Zaporizhzhia region and on the outskirts of Bakhmut, the eastern city that became the site of the war’s longest and bloodiest battle before falling to Moscow in May.

A Washington-based think tank said late Friday that Ukrainian forces were pushing forward in Zaporizhzhia after advancing into the village of Robotyne earlier this week. The Institute for the

Study of War in its latest assessment cited pro-Kremlin military bloggers expressing concern over a lack of reinforcements and troop locations in the area, while the Ukrainian General Staff that same day claimed unspecified further successes south and southeast of Robotyne.

Also on Saturday, a new drone attack on Moscow forced an early morning temporary shutdown of all three major airports serving the city, Russian state media reported. Officials blamed Ukraine for what appeared to be the latest of near-daily strikes on the Russian capital and the surrounding region.

Kyiv has since early this year sought to take the 18-month-war into the heart of Russia, also saying recently that it was behind strikes on Russian military assets far behind the front lines.

Russia’s defense ministry and Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin said that a drone was shot down over the Istra district of the Moscow region, some 50 kilometers (30 miles) west of Red Square. Sobyanin said in a Telegram post that there were no immediate reports of any casualties or damage.

According to Russia’s state Tass agency, the Sheremetevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo airports all suspended flights for over an hour early Saturday.

Russian Telegram channels on Saturday posted videos, some of them apparently from home security cameras, of what they claimed was Russian air defense downing the drone. One video shows a car parked outside what appears to be a suburban home, its alarm beginning to blare seconds after two loud blasts sound in the distance.

Russia’s defense ministry that same day blamed Ukraine for the attack. As of Saturday morning, Ukrainian authorities had not said whether Kyiv had any involvement.

Russia and Ukraine traded multiple drone attacks earlier this week, with Kyiv apparently targeting Moscow and the Kremlin’s forces launching another bombardment of Ukrainian grain storage depots in what have recently become signature tactics.

Also this week, Kyiv claimed it had destroyed a key Russian S-400 surfaceto-air missile defense system in occupied Crimea. Ukrainian media also claimed that Ukrainian saboteurs coordinated by Kyiv’s military intelligence services carried out a pair of recent drone attacks that destroyed and damaged bomber

aircraft at air bases deep inside Russia. Later on Saturday, Russia’s defense ministry said in a separate statement that another drone was brought down as it approached the Russian city of Belgorod, some 45 kilometers (27 miles) from the Ukrainian border. It did not mention any casualties or damage.

Belgorod regional Gov. Vyacheslav

Gladkov accused Ukrainian forces of shelling a border village using cluster munitions, wounding six civilians. Gladkov did not provide visual evidence for the use of the controversial and widely banned weapons, which contain dozens of small bomblets that scatter shrapnel over a wide area.

Kyiv last month began receiving cluster bombs from the U.S., but has pledged to use them only to dislodge groups of enemy soldiers. Ukrainian officials

have regularly accused Moscow of firing cluster munitions at residential areas, while Russian regional authorities have reported Ukrainian cross-border attacks in which civilians were hurt.

Ukraine’s air force, meanwhile, reported early on Saturday that two Iranianmade “Shahed” drones fired by Russian troops were shot down during the night over the country’s northeast.

In Ukraine’s front-line Kherson region in the south, local Gov. Oleksandr Prokudin reported that an 83-year-old woman died in a hospital after suffering burn wounds as Russian forces overnight shelled the riverside village of Olhivka. Also on Saturday, the Kherson regional administration reported that Russian shelling damaged a hospital in the province’s namesake capital, blowing out doors and windows but causing no casualties.

Rockford Rocked Interviews

Bulletboys/King Kobra axeman Mick Sweda talks Cheap Trick and more

Mick Sweda is a songwriter, guitarist and singer born in Gowanda, New York on April 18, 1960.

In 1984, he was approached by Carmine Appice to join his new band King Kobra, which had been signed to Capitol Records. Sweda recorded two records with King Kobra (Ready to Strike and Thrill of a Lifetime) and toured extensively, opening for bands such as Iron Maiden, Kiss and Ted Nugent. Sweda left the band in 1987 and started BulletBoys with Lonnie Vencent and Marq Torien. The band signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1988. Upon the release of their eponymous debut, the band toured extensively opening for bands such as Cheap Trick, Bon Jovi, Ozzy Osbourne and others, as well as headlining theaters. BulletBoys recorded two more records for Warner Bros. (Freakshow and Za-Za) and supported both records with tours before Sweda left the band in 1993. Please read on!

Rockford Rocked Interviews: Tell us where you grew up and what made you decide to get involved in music.

Mick Sweda: I spent my pre-teen/teen years in Randolph, NY which is in the western part of the state near Buffalo. I saw a new kid in town playing a Thinline Telecaster on his porch and approached him to say hello. About one week later I had convinced my friends to get instruments and we had a band. The beginnings of one anyway.

RRI: Were you self taught as a guitar player?

MS: I took a couple of lessons but

wasn’t very cooperative so I was largely self taught. Once I started playing I never really put it down.

RRI: As you enter your late teens you start to play gigs on a regular basis. When do you make the move from New York to L.A.?

MS: My intention was to move my band The Pedestrians to LA where I hoped we could make some noise. As it turned out, just two of us made the trek in 1981.

RRI: What was your first impression of the music scene on L.A.’s Sunset strip when you got there or was there much of a music scene at all in 1981?

MS: I didn’t hang on the Strip much but I was a regular on Melrose Ave. where I lived. At the time, it was rockabilly that was hot with pompadours and upright basses. I didn’t connect with that but there wasn’t much in the way of hard rock that I liked. I stuck with Michael Schenker, Pat Travers, Max Webster and music from my past.

RRI: You would eventually hook up with legendary drummer Carmine Appice and join his outfit called King Kobra. Thoughts?

MS: I wasn’t really a fan of Carmine’s but it was a great opportunity to work with total pros and talented players. I jumped at the the chance and made the most of it. I believe we deserved a better fate but it was a necessary step and it worked out as it was supposed to.

RRI: With KK you guys were playing huge gigs with the likes of Iron Maiden, Kiss, Accept and others, but by 1987 you would join forces with guitarist/singer Marq Torien, Lonnie Vencent and Jimmy D’Anda to form Bulletboys.

MS: It was a great education and a hell of a lot of fun but we just couldn’t break through. Torien and Vencent were in the band at the time but I was over it. I asked them to start a new thing with me but they wanted to see KK through. Eventually, they quit and we started writing.

RRI: Now, Mark Torien was an accomplished guitar player and for a minute he landed the guitar spot for Ozzy when Randy Rhodes passed. Was there ever a time when you guys thought that maybe it would be a good idea having Marq play guitar in the band as well? You certainly covered a lot of ground by yourself!

MS: It’s always interesting to hear that because many don’t seem to keep in mind that he never got that gig and, as much as people mention it, that he didn’t make it in Ratt, etc. There are good reasons for that, as I was to learn. I brought up the idea that he play guitar in the band and Jimmy and Lonnie both tried desperately to dissuade me. Finally, they said “Ok, you’ll see.” He played one song with us in rehearsal but it was a colossal mess and immediately evident that it would never work. Lesson learned.

RRI: The Bullet Boys seemed to be touring non-stop during this time. Are there any bands that come to mind that were exceptionally fun to hang with while on tour?

MS: I tend to be very private and a bit of a lone wolf so I didn’t really engage much beyond the requisite civilities but I enjoyed being on the Cinderella/Winger tour because, in spite of our proclivities, they kept us on board the whole time. On the other hand, there were a few groups who seemed to be taking the rock in a very different direction from what I appreciated.

RRI: in 1993 Bulletboys would release ZA-ZA but would disband two years later only to reform in 1998. By this time former Guns N’ Roses drummer Steven Adler and future Guns N’ Roses guitarist DJ Ashba would be added to the fold. What was Steven Adler like to work with?

MS: I ended up playing in various incarnations a couple times over the years, but they were far and few between. But I don’t know those chaps however I’ve heard they’re very nice.

RRI: There would be other Bulletboys and KK reunions throughout the years but tell me what your favorite era was with either band.

MS: It was the Cinderella tour because we got to bond and grow as a musical entity and we took up the challenge of creating a new, fresh set every night,

even though it was very much a routine. As I’ve said, we hadn’t played many gigs prior to recording our first album so the opportunity to experiment and refine our set was great for us.

RRI: I’m going to say a word or phrase and you answer accordingly. Ready?

RRI: The Hot Summers band.

MS: A true representation of my recent musical ideas and my love child with Shane Tassart.

RRI: Black Gibson Les Pauls vs Gibson Firebird guitars.

MS: I just played Bones, my `77 Les Paul Pro today but I’ll take my Firebird to my next gig.

RRI: Former King Kobra and W.A.S.P. bass player Johnny Rod.

MS: I’m praying for you, brother!

RRI: Shitty mobile home camper tour buses.

MS: Freezing in the Rocky Mountains with the flu, chills and sub-zero air blasting through every seam in that God forsaken thing.

RRI: Any memories of playing Alpine Valley (East Troy Wisconsin July 10th 1985) - ultimately that would be the final resting place for SRV in 1989).

MS: I can’t remember if we were there just before or just after that happened in 1989 but I was very sad.

RRI: Rick Nielsen and Cheap Trick.

MS: I went to a bar to see a cover band and they opened with “Hello There” and “Big Eyes” and I was stunned. I didn’t know they were Cheap Trick songs and I’d never heard such great songs from a cover band. I went home and listened to late night FM radio and they played the Cheap Trick In Color album and I heard those two songs. I was spellbound and from that moment on all I wanted to do was go to Chicago and see Cheap Trick. I fantasized about it night and day. We finally played with them and I was still an adoring fan. Later, Rick came to a show and we played “Hello There” in his honor. He came backstage and said “I always knew that was a crappy song and you guys proved it!” I love that man!

RRI: Foundation and or charities that are near and dear to your heart.

MS: Shriners, Children’s Cancer Center, Wounded Warriors, Animal Shelters.

RRI: What’s next for Mick Sweda?

MS: I’m working on post-rock instrumental songs that are cinematic and ambient in nature. There are also plans to start on the second Hot Summers release but we still like our first one so give it a listen!!

RRI: Thank you and cheers!

Bob Barker, dapper ‘Price Is Right’ and ‘Truth or Consequences’ host and animal advocate, dies at 99

Bob Barker, the enduring, dapper game show host who became a household name over a half century of hosting “Truth or Consequences” and “The Price Is Right,” has died. He was 99.

Barker — also a longtime animal rights activist — died Saturday morning at his home in Los Angeles, publicist Roger Neal said.

“I am so proud of the trailblazing work Barker and I did together to expose the cruelty to animals in the entertainment industry and including working to improve the plight of abused and exploited animals in the United States and internationally,” said Nancy Burnet, his longtime friend and co-executor of his estate, in a statement.

Barker retired in June 2007, telling his studio audience: “I thank you, thank you, thank you for inviting me into your home for more than 50 years.”

Barker was working in radio in 1956 when producer Ralph Edwards invited him to audition as the new host of “Truth or Consequences,” a game show in which audience members had to do wacky stunts — the “consequence” — if they failed to answer a question — the “truth,” which was always the silly punchline to a riddle no one was ever meant to furnish. (Q: What did one eye say to another? A: Just between us, something smells.)

In a 1996 interview with The Associated Press, Barker recalled receiving the news that he had been hired: “I know exactly where I was, I know exactly how I felt: I hung up the phone and said to my wife, ‘Dorothy Jo, I got it!’”

Barker stayed with “Truth or Consequences” for 18 years — including several years in a syndicated version.

Meanwhile, he began hosting a resurrected version of “The Price Is Right” on CBS in 1972. (The original host in the 1950s and ‘60s was Bill Cullen.) It would become TV’s longest-running game show and the last on a broadcast network of what in TV’s early days had numbered dozens.

“I have grown old in your service,” the silver-haired, perennially tanned Barker joked on a prime-time television retrospective in the mid-’90s.

CBS said in a statement that daytime television has lost one of its “most iconic stars.

“We lost a beloved member of the CBS family today with the passing of Bob Barker,” the network said, noting that he had “made countless people’s dreams come true and everyone feel like a winner when they were called to ‘come on down.’”

In all, he taped more than 5,000 shows in his career. He said he was retiring because “I’m just reaching the age where the constant effort to be there and do the show physically is a lot for me. ... Better (to leave) a year too soon than a year too late.” Comedian Drew Carey was chosen to replace him.

Barker was back with Carey for one show broadcast in April 2009. He was there to promote the publication of his memoir, “Priceless Memories,” in which he summed up his joy from hosting the show as the opportunity “to watch people reveal themselves and to watch the excitement and humor unfold.”

“There hasn’t been a day on set that I didn’t think of Bob Barker and thank him. I will carry his memory in my heart forever,” Carey wrote in a post on X, the site formerly known as Twitter.

Barker well understood the attraction of “The Price Is Right,” in which audience members — invited to “Come on down!” to the stage — competed for prizes by trying to guess their retail value.

“Everyone can identify with prices, even the president of the United States. Viewers at home become involved because they all have an opinion on the bids,” Barker once said. His own appeal was clear: Barker played it straight — warm, gracious and witty — refusing to mock the game show format or his contestants.

“I want the contestants to feel as though they’re guests in my home,” he said in 1996. “Perhaps my feeling of respect for them comes across to viewers, and that may be one of the reasons why I’ve lasted.”

As a TV personality, Barker retained a touch of the old school — for instance, no wireless microphone for him. Like the mic itself, the mic cord served him well as a prop, insouciantly flicked and finessed. His career longevity, he said, was the result of being content. “I had the opportunity to do this type of show and I discovered I enjoyed it ... People who do something that they thoroughly enjoy and they started doing it when they’re very young, I don’t think they want to stop.”

Barker also spent 20 years as host of the Miss USA Pageant and the Miss Universe Pageant. A longtime animal rights activist who daily urged his viewers to “have your pets spayed or neutered” and successfully lobbied to ban fur coats as prizes on “The Price Is Right,” he quit the Miss USA Pageant in 1987 in protest over the presentation of fur coats to the winners.

Among his activities on behalf of animals was a $250,000 donation to Save the Chimps, the Fort Pierce, Floridabased organization said in an emailed statement Saturday.

“Bob Barker’s kind spirit lives on at Save the Chimps, where we walk every day on the road named for him after his game-changing contribution,” said Save the Chimps’ CEO Ana Paula Tavares. At the time of the donation, Barker said that he hoped chimpanzees tortured “physically and mentally” for years when being used for research experiments would find “the first peace, contentment and love they have ever known at Save the Chimps.”

In 1997, Barker declined to be a presenter at the Daytime Emmy awards ceremony because he said it snubbed game shows by not airing awards in the category. He called game shows “the pillars of daytime TV.”

He had a memorable cameo appearance on the big screen in 1996, sparring with Adam Sandler in the movie “Happy Gilmore.” “I did `The Price Is Right’ for 35 years, and they’re asking me how it was to beat up Adam Sandler,” Barker later joked.

Sandler paid tribute to Barker on

Instagram Saturday with a series of images of them together. “The man. The myth. The best. Such a sweet funny guy to hang out with.” Sandler captioned the post. “Loved talking to him. Loved laughing with him. Loved him kicking the crap out of me.”

In 1994, the widowed Barker was sued for sexual harassment by Dian Parkinson, a “Price is Right” model for 18 years. Barker admitted engaging in “hanky panky” with Parkinson from 1989-91 but said she initiated the relationship. Parkinson dropped the lawsuit in 1995, saying it was hurting her health.

Barker became embroiled in a dispute with another former “Price Is Right” model, Holly Hallstrom, who claimed she was fired in 1995 because the show’s producers believed she was fat. Barker denied the allegations.

Born in Darrington, Washington, in 1923, Barker spent part of his childhood on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota, where his widowed mother had taken a teaching job. The family later moved to Springfield, Mo., where he attended high school. He served in the Navy in World War II.

He married Dorothy Jo Gideon, his high school sweetheart; she died in 1981 after 37 years of marriage. They had no children.

Barker was given a lifetime achievement award at the 26th annual Daytime Emmy Awards in 1999. He closed his acceptance remarks with the signoff: “Have your pets spayed or neutered.”

Heat waves: eects and coping

By the time this article is published we will have lived through an intense heat wave which is expected to be more frequent in future years. In fall, 1995, students in an energy class in Toronto wanted to know what accounted for the 739 deaths in Chicago during the five days starting on July 12 of that year. The highest temperature reached during the five days was 106° F. It was the second highest recorded temperature since the 1934 record of 110° F.

Most of the deaths were elderly poor residents who were without air conditioning or unable to aord to turn it on. The victims also did not open their windows or sleep outside due to their fear of crime. The high level of humidity was in marked contrast to earlier heat waves.

The nighttime temperature conditions remained high as the concentration of buildings and concrete radiate more of that heat into the urban setting after the sunsets. Other factors contributed to the loss of life as the city was not well prepared for the emergency. During earlier heat waves people were known to sleep outdoors, in parks and along the

Lake Michigan shoreline.

Unequal death rates between groups included poor and elderly black citizens dying at a high rate with fewer deaths for white and Hispanic residents.

With the most recent heat wave news sources warned of the dangers and alerted citizens to take appropriate actions to protect themselves from the heat. Outdoor events were cancelled. As body temperatures increase, the heart beats faster to circulate the blood to cool the body and can lead to cardiac arrest. If a hotter future awaits us we may have more days of reduced activity as we already do in response to cold weather.

While air conditioning enables us to be comfortable, it dumps the hot air from a building or vehicle to the outside adding to the high temperature. If grid service is disrupted for any reason, air conditioning is lost.

Stan Cox in a 2016 article on air conditioning traces the history of it. Its use increased in the boom years following World War II.

Eventually it transformed the architecture of cities and suburbs. High rise glass oce buildings were built necessitating cooling to make them usable in the heat of summer. Houses and apartment building

designs also changed. Features formerly used to cool buildings were abandoned. Porches, large eaves, high ceilings, cross ventilation, windows that opened and whole house fans were eliminated.

Instead of investing in warm weather features, the size of homes increased and energy demand for residential air conditioning doubled.

While air conditioning has become a necessity it is not a solution as it leaves the underlying conditions of climate change and the design of cities unchanged.

Cox calls for a major redesign of hot areas in urban settings involving a reduction in parking and driving spaces and replacing them with vegetation. Large buildings could be renovated with ventilation shafts to reduce air conditioning along with installing windows that can be opened to increase cross ventilation.

He cites a study from the Lawrence Berkeley Lab report calling for a crash program that would include installing three shade trees per building and making all roofs and pavements reflective which would reduce national cooling demand by 20%.

Recorded temperatures reveal heat dierences between the air and dierent surface conditions. With an air tempera-

ture of 95°F, a lawn can be 105° and pavement 140°, resulting in the urban heat island eect.

In his recent article in 2023: The Hubris of Plutocrats: They Can’t Escape the Heat That’s Coming, Cox is critical of the wealthy who are securing homes in areas to escape the extreme consequences of climate change and social disruptions while not supporting more vigorous eorts to respond to global warming. By buying second homes in cooler areas to serve as places to escape from heat waves they increase home prices which displace housing opportunities for lower income residents.

Some of the people have found living accommodations in former missile silos, floating and sea floor settlements and remote places such as New Zealand and Alaska. Many of them have secured their wealth from the digital economy rather than from industries providing essentials such as food, water, shelter and utility services.

Cox closes on the thought that there is no refuge from material facts, stressing that we need to live within nature’s resource restraints and ecological boundaries. He calls for an economy redirected toward meeting all people’s basic needs and away from material overabundance.

WEEK OF AUGUST 27 TO SEPTEMBER 2, 2023

THE LUCKIEST SIGNS THIS WEEK: PISCES, ARIES AND TAURUS

ARIES

At work, you’ll be given new responsibilities that don’t entirely match your skillset. Fortunately, this situation will move you up. You’ll also get approval to start a new project.

TAURUS

You’ll be inspired to go back to school to get a degree. The new knowledge you gain will help you create a bright future. A romantic getaway could strengthen your relationship.

GEMINI

Work is starting to become routine. You need a change! Make a plan and prepare to reach new professional heights. Boldness is the secret to success with long-term projects.

CANCER

It’s easier to get along with people when you’re not emotionally involved. One of your children could give you a hard time with discipline, for example. You’ll be able to resolve a conflict by being diplomatic.

LEO

Don’t neglect the small details. At work, you’ll organize an event that will bring many people together. However, it may be difficult to establish open communication. Patience will be the solution to any difficulties you encounter.

VIRGO

Your leadership skills are needed at work or elsewhere. You’ll have to overcome a fear or lack of confidence. Afterward, you’ll be regarded as a heroic figure. At the very least, your achievement will be talked about for a long time.

LIBRA

A family member could slow you down. This could cause you to rush to get to your appointments on time. Perhaps it’s time to move out of your home, which has become too big since your children have left the nest.
