Collecting seeds is easy community service Natural Land Institute will hold the annual Fall Prairie Harvest Day on Saturday, September 9 from 9 a.m.–12:00 p.m., at Nygren Wetland Preserve (3190 W. Rockton Rd., Rockton, IL 61072). This free family friendly event is perfect for any age and all kinds of groups, families and individuals. Volunteers will have fun learning how to identify the plants in their dormant stage and seed guides will show them how to properly collect the seeds. Participants will also enjoy discovering other interesting plants and animals while there, such as grasshoppers, butterflies, birds, thirteen-lined ground squirrels, and other amazing wildlife. Come dressed for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. Snacks and beverages provided. Attendees can come and go anytime throughout the event timeline and should dress for the weather and wear sturdy shoes. Gloves are recommended. (Photo Courtesy Natural Land Institute) About Nygren Wetland Preserve: The Carl & Myrna Nygren Wetland Preserve is a 721-acre wildlife sanctuary owned by the Natural Land Institute. There are prairies, wetlands, bottomland forest, oxbow lakes and ponds in the preserve. Raccoon Creek runs through the preserve with the Rock and Pecatonica Rivers forming the southeast corner of it. The Dianne Nora Nature Trail is a free 2.5 mile hiking trail around the wetland and is part of the Prairie State Hike app (99¢ in the Apple or Android Store).
