Jobless rate falls to lowest point since start of pandemic 4.5% remains higher than surrounding states, national average By Peter Hancock

Capitol News Illinois phancock@capitolnewsillinois.com

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois economy added 18,800 jobs during June as the unemployment rate fell to 4.5 percent, the lowest it has been since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. That is down one-tenth of a percentage point from May, and down two full percentage points from June 2021. Preliminary numbers released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the Illinois Department of Employment Security showed the sectors with the biggest gains during June were leisure and hospitality, professional and business services, construction, and educational and health services. Slight declines were reported in the financial industry and the catch-all

category “other services.” “With the statewide unemployment rate at its lowest since the onset of the pandemic, the data released (Thursday) is a further reflection of continued economic recovery and evidence of a strengthening Illinois labor market,” Deputy Governor Andy Manar said in a statement. Prior to the pandemic, Illinois had seen its lowest unemployment rate ever, at 3.5 percent in December 2019. It climbed to 4.9 percent in March 2020, when the World Health Organization declared a pandemic existed, and reached a historic high of 17.4 percent in April 2020 after restaurants, bars, theaters and other “nonessential” businesses were ordered to close in an effort to contain the spread of the virus. The state’s jobless rate has since been on a continuous downward trend as businesses gradually reopened. The trend in Illinois mirrors what has been happening nationally, although the state continues to lag behind the rest of the country in its recovery. The U.S. unemploy-

ment rate stood at 3.6 percent, unchanged from the month before but down from its peak of 14.7 percent in April 2020. Illinois’ unemployment rate also stood higher than all of its surrounding states. Indiana, Missouri, Iowa and Wisconsin all had jobless rates below 3 percent while Kentucky stood at 3.7 percent. In fact, the 4.5 percent rate recorded in Illinois was the fifth highest in the nation. Pennsylvania and Delaware also were at 4.5 percent. The economic recovery also has had its downside. Growing employment and rising wages have brought about increased consumer demand at the same time supply chains needed to satisfy that demand have remained bottlenecked, causing prices to spiral upward at an annual rate of 9.1 percent in June. Rockford artists present floral paintings in Kortman exhibit From J.R. Kortman Center for Design

“Color is a power which directly influences the soul,” says emerging Rockford artist Valentina Fedoseeva quoting Wassily Kandinsky. “Telling universal stories, is how I like to highlight the magical elements in our shared culture,” says Rockford artist Jenny Mathews. These two exuberant artists are teaming up in an expression of the colorful beauty of nature in “Botanic Flourish,” an exhibition of floral paintings opening Friday, July 29th in the Kortman Gallery, Downtown Rockford. “Both Mathews and Fedoseeva have an artistic gift to create works that have universal appeal because of their classic painterly styles,” says Kortman gallery director Doc Slafkosky. “Jenny introduced me to not only the idea for this show, but also to Valentina, a newcomer to the Rockford art community.”

Valentina Fedoseeva was born and raised in Moldavia. Her work is influenced by her travel experiences that heave taken her to such colorful cultures as India and Central America. Nature is her inspiration as most of her works captures imagery such as flowers, botanicals, and landscapes. “I love nature very much! It’s the main source of my inspiration. Shapes, colors, and motifs are collected grain by grain in my subconscious,” said Fedoseeva. “When I enter the studio, something huge, something that cannot be described in words, seems to take possession of me.” Jenny Mathews is a well-known and accomplished Rockford artist. She has exhibited work in a galleries and museums throughout the region including a 2019 solo exhibit in the Kortman Gallery. She is best known for her public art murals that have graced the Rockford urban landscape for years…her latest

in Rockford’s North End above the Norwegian Restaurant at 1402 North Main. “I enjoy creating small paintings and illustrations as much as large public murals,” said Mathews. “My artistic vision is driven by my love for bringing people together and my work aims to be the catalyst of a shared experience.” Kortman Gallery opening reception for “Botanic Flourish,” an exhibition of floral paintings by Valentina Fedoseeva and Jenny Mathews opens Friday, July 29th from 5:30 to 9pm. The gallery is located upstairs at J. R. Kortman Center for Design, 107 North Main Street in Downtown Rockford. The exhibit is free, and open to the public.. “Botanic Flourish” will run though September 30th. For more information call 815-968-0123 or visit jrkortman.com.

Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department filed a lawsuit Monday against some of the largest poultry producers in the U.S. along with a proposed settlement seeking to end what it claims have been longstanding deceptive and abusive practices for workers. The suit, filed in federal court in Maryland, names Cargill, Sanderson Farms and Wayne Farms, along with a data consulting company known as Webber, Meng, Sahl and Co. and its president. In its lawsuit, the Justice Department alleges the companies have been engaged in a multiyear conspiracy to exchange information about the wages and benefits of workers at poultry processing plants to drive down employee competition in the marketplace. The companies did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment. The government contends the data consulting firm helped to share the information about the workers’ compensation with the companies and their executives. By carrying out the scheme, officials allege, the companies were able to compete less intensely for workers and reduce the amount of money and benefits they had to offer their employees, suppressing competition for poultry processing workers across the board, according to court papers. The defendants and unnamed co-conspirators in the lawsuit account for hiring about 90% of all chicken processing jobs in the nation. The suit is the latest example of the Justice Department’s antitrust enforcement targeting companies the government believes engage in anticompetitive behavior to stifle workers or harm consumers. It also comes as the department continues a broader investigation into labor abuses in the poultry industry. “Through a brazen scheme to exchange wage and benefit information, these poultry processors stifled competition and harmed a generation of plant workers who face demanding and sometimes dangerous conditions to earn a living,” said Doha Mekki, the principal deputy assistant attorney general for the Justice Department’s antitrust division. The suit against the companies was filed with a proposed consent decree — a

settlement that would require the companies to pay $84.8 million in restitution for workers who were harmed by the unlawful information sharing network. The settlement would also put in place a federal monitor selected by the Justice Department who would ensure compliance for the next decade. The consent decree also would permit Justice Department lawyers and investigators to inspect the poultry processors’ facilities and interview their employees to ensure they are complying with the terms, according to court documents. T he su it c ome s a s C a r g i l l a nd Continental Grain, of which Wayne Farms is a subsidiary, formed a joint venture to acquire Sanderson Farms, paying $203 per share in cash for a company that last year processed more than 4.8 billion pounds (2.2 billion kilograms) of meat. The companies plan to combine Sanderson Farms with Wayne Farms to form a new, privately held poultry business. Operations will include poultry processing plants and prepared foods plants across Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, and Texas. Wayne Farms has more than 9,000 employees. It makes products under brand names including Wayne Farms fresh and prepared chicken, Platinum Harvest premium fresh chicken, Chef’s Craft gourmet chicken, Naked Truth premium chicken and Ladybird premium chicken. Laurel, Mississippi-based Sanderson Farms has 17,000 employees and 12 plants. It processes 13.6 million chickens

per week. The proposed consent decree would also resolve allegations that Sanderson Farms and Wayne Farms treated chicken farmers unfairly by using a system that reduced their pay for low performance. The farmers sign contracts to raise the chickens, and the processing companies provide the birds and the feed. The farmers’ pay is then determined by how well they perform compared with other chicken growers. The Justice Department alleges that the companies’ use of that compensation method, known as the “tournament system,” resulted in their failure to provide information for farmers to evaluate and manage their financial risk. Generally, chicken producers enter long-term contracts with meat companies that farmers say lock them into deals that fix their compensation at unprofitably low levels. As part of that settlement, Sanderson Farms and Wayne Farms would be prohibited from reducing the base payments to chicken growers as a way to penalize them for under-performance. The consent decree would, though, allow the companies to offer incentives and bonuses to growers. The proposed consent decree with the poultry companies and one with the data company were filed in court on Monday. Under federal law, the proposals would also be published in the Federal Register and there would be a 60-day period for people to send comments to the Justice Department before a court could accept and finalize the agreements.

UKRAINE

Young Ukrainians use techno parties to rebuild villages BY JUSTIN SPIKE ASSOCIATED PRESS

YAHIDNE, Ukraine (AP) — In a village in northern Ukraine that was devastated by Russian occupation only months ago, a techno party is in full swing. In a bombed-out building, more than 200 young people have found a novel way to help rebuild their country. The daytime “clean-up rave” in Ya h idne w as org a n i ze d by young Ukrainians who have been using dance parties as a way to contribute to recovery eorts in the country’s north, which has suered major damage from Russian bombardment. Shovels in hand, the volunteers tackle the remnants of a village cultural center that was destroyed in March by a Russian rocket strike, tossing piles of debris onto a tractor’s loader. A DJ, his turntables mounted on a stack of ammunition boxes, spins techno and house dance music as the volunteers work. Some even take a

break from their labor to dance. “Volunteering is my lifestyle now,” said Tania Burianova, an organizer with the Repair Together initiative. “I like electronic music and I used to party. But now it’s wartime and we want to help, and we’re doing it with music.” Ukraine’s vibrant club scene was brought to an abrupt halt with the Russian invasion on Feb. 24. Now, with a nighttime curfew in eect in Kyiv, the capital, and the threat of more Russian rocket attacks ever present, adherents of Ukraine’s party culture have sought to combine the fun and freedom of a music festival with rebuilding the country they love. Burianova said the clean-up raves bring together those who had lost their nightclub community during the war, helping them regain a sense of normalcy and fun while contributing to the recovery of damaged towns. “We miss (parties) and we want to come back to normal life, but our normal life

now is volunteering,” Burianova, 26, told The Associated Press. The damaged cultural center sits on the edge of Yahidne, where nearly all of the just over 300 people in the village were confined to a basement for weeks by Russian forces during the occupation of the northern Chernihiv province. Local resident Nina, 68, said she spent those awful weeks in the basement before the Russian troops withdrew, and that 11 people died there as a result of the poor conditions. She was grateful to see young people coming together to help the village recover. “They already repaired our windows, doors and entrances,” Nina said of the volunteers. “We couldn’t do it ourselves with our salaries or pensions. I’m thankful that they helped us.” Most of the volunteers were in their 20s and 30s and came from Kyiv, about two hours’ drive away. But others have come from the western city of Lviv and

also nearby Chernihiv, while some foreign volunteers arrived from Portugal, the United States, Germany and elsewhere. The clean-up at the cultural center was the group’s eighth project so far, and they have already helped repair 15 damaged homes in the village. They plan to expand and hold a building camp event in the nearby town of Lukashivka, where they will construct 12 houses for people whose homes have been destroyed, Burianova said. After finishing a set, DJ Oleksandr Buchinskiy said all of the volunteers were connected by a sense of optimism and responsibility. “These are all young people that still have a passion for life, but they feel pain and are very sad and angry because of the war,” Buchinskiy said. “But they feel a need to take part in this historical moment, and help people, and make Ukraine a better place with a smile on their faces.”

Voices from the Grave

Legends and lies By Kathi Kresol Contributor

Legends are by their very nature mysteries that can’t be proven either true or false. They spring from thin air, mostly fictional renditions of some story that one person heard from another person. Most times, everyone who hears it adds their own embellishments to the tale until it scarcely resembles the original story. Sometimes these legends are based on actual facts that can be proven and other times, they are completely fabricated. One thing that fascinates folks who study legends and lore of a region is how quickly they spread. And how slow they are to fade even when facts disprove their validity. There is a local legend that is a perfect example of one of these types of stories. It involves a grave located in Rockton Cemetery in Rockton, Illinois. The cemetery itself was officially established in 1857 but contains graves going back to 1847. Find a grave contains quite a bit of information about a lot of the

people buried here. This author is always extremely grateful to those who spend their time researching and documenting the burials in these small cemeteries. They have saved a lot of stories that would have been lost a long time ago if not for their dedication to local history. It is the fact that there has been so much documentation at this cemetery that makes the legend even more mysterious. The legend has been circulating for at least 20 years and it is based on a baby’s grave that is contained within a small fenced area. The story shared for two decades is that a young woman who lived in Rockton in the 1854-55 time period was deemed a witch by the townsfolk. The young lady became pregnant though she had no boyfriend or husband at the time. The baby died at about 10 months old under very mysterious circumstances. According to some versions of the story, the young mother sacrificed her own baby as an offering to the devil.

Opening Friday, July 29 / 5:30-9pm 107 North Main • Downtown • 815-968-0123 • jrkortman.com

Shortly after the baby died, folks started seeing strange lights and shadows moving through that portion of the cemetery. Others claimed to hear wailing and feeling an intense cold near the grave. The fence was allegedly placed to keep the evil that surrounded the grave cordoned off in an attempt to contain the spirits of the young witch or her demon child from wandering. The legend states that the young woman was forced to flee her home on the edge of town in the middle of winter and succumbed to the elements. She was not buried in the cemetery because of her alliance with the devil and her spirit can be seen on the edges of the cemetery trying to get in to be united with her child. Modern day visitors have written accounts of their visits to the small cemetery and told stories of feeling intense sadness and also anger. They have picked flowers from inside the fenced area and then the flowers wilted and dried right before their eyes. Some have also picked the beautiful flowers as a memento only to notice on the return ride home that those same flowers became infested with insects crawling all over the petals. There are some who visit here who leave presents for the baby. The grave is covered with stuffed animals, cars, and other child appropriate gifts. But other things are left within the fenced area, too. Macabre skeletons, creepy postcards, and cans of alcoholic beverages line the grave. The Haunted Rockford Crew has been visiting this grave for a while now and has researched the claims and the actual history of the baby and his family. The crew has had their own experiences and were surprised to learn the real truth of the haunting of this grave. The child buried here was not born out of wedlock. His name was Charles Wright and his parents were James and Elizabeth. They were married in Winnebago County in 1849 and settled in Rockton Township where James worked as a blacksmith. By the time Charles was born in February 1855, the couple already had a son George and a daughter named Mary. Charles died in December 1855 at the age of 10 months old. According to the Find a Grave website, Charlie’s grave was being dug up by the wild animals in the area and the fence was placed there in 1857 to keep them out. Child mortality was high in the 1850’s and parents feared the loss of their children just as much then as they do now. Records indicate that the Wright family must have planned to stay in the Rockton area because James bought five additional plots in the cemetery. They must have thought they would be around to visit the grave and to protect it. The records of who was buried in three

of the additional graves have been lost. The other two contain the graves of Mr. Paul Dalee who died in 1868 and his wife Mary whose death date is unknown. They are thought to have been family members of James and Elizabeth. Neither James or Elizabeth are buried next to their child. They moved from this area and by 1870 were living in California with George, Mary and two twin boys who were born after Charlie. James and Elizabeth may have been buried a long way from their little baby boy. But the couple does not rest in peace. The Haunted Rockford crew psychics were able to communicate with Charlie’s parents and find out the truth. James and Elizabeth are tormented by the legend that has been told and retold about their family. Elizabeth was never accused of witchcraft and the fact that the family was in the area for at least 5 years after Charlie’s death shows that the legend as it is told is untrue. The feelings of utter sadness and anger do come from spirits but not for the reasons stated in the legend. They spring from the anguish of a young mother and father who have watched as people visited their baby’s grave. They appreciate the kindness of those who bring appropriate gifts for their beloved little boy. But it is those who bring the inappropriate gifts and talk of Elizabeth being a witch who would sacrifice her own child to the devil that frustrate and enrage James and Elizabeth. It traps them there and causes them to haunt the cemetery. They feel like those kinds of people desecrate their child’s grave and their family’s memory. The Haunted Rockford Crew made a promise to Elizabeth and James to tell the true story behind the haunting in the Rockton Cemetery. Legends like this one die hard and we know that this one story is not going to stop folks from believing a tale that has been made up and embellished upon for decades. But we will keep visiting little Charlie and hope that eventually we can set the record straight and bring this family the peace it deserves. Kathi Kresol has been researching Rockford’s history for almost two decades. She shares her stories she researches in books, presentations, and at her events. You can read more of Kathi’s stories and find out about her upcoming events at hauntedrockford.com.

ROCKFORD ROCKED INTERVIEWS

Mark Schuster on blending Indie acoustic Rock and Progressive Metal BY TODD HOUSTON CONTRIBUTOR

Mark Schuster has been lighting up the fretboard for over three decades now. He started out in the ‘80s slinging guitar for local Rockford rock/metal acts such as Circus, Hard-Bitten and others. He has since turned his attention to writing Prog rock opuses and tasty indie acoustic rock. You can find Mark’s compositions on digital music distribution highways such as CdBaby, Spotify and pretty much anywhere else in-between. This man’s music needs to be heard. Period. Today we catch up with Mark to find out what’s been cookin’ since the days when MTV played music videos and stone washed jeans took over the racks at Bergner’s and Pranges. Read on: RRI: Hey Mark, thanks for dropping by! Let’s go back to when you first got the music bug? what was it that gravitate towards the guitar as opposed to the Trombone or perhaps the Clarinet? MS: Well, as appealing as the Trombone and Clarinet were (are), the guitar just seemed to be the way to go. It was a tough decision, though. (laughs) RRI: Do you remember music being played around the house growing up? Were your parents musical? MS: Not really. Neither of my parents were musical or played instruments. Most of the time the only thing I heard was “Turn that sh*t down!” RRI: Who were you listening to first starting out? MS: All the usual suspects for a hard rock dude. In the ‘70s/’80s it was Van Halen, Scorpions, Judas Priest, Cheap Trick, AC/DC, etc. I also listened to music like Bowie and the Stones. I really liked Jazz guitarist Pat Metheny as well. RRI: Do you remember the first song you learned on guitar? MS: It was either “Cat Scratch Fever” or “Smoke on the Water” I really can’t remember. I took lessons at Guzzardo Music in Belvidere and I think those two songs were mandatory for any kid learning guitar in the ‘70s and ‘80s you know? RRI: I was blown away when I first heard you sing. Being a one-man project it’s probably a necessary skill. MS: Well, singing is something new for me, relative to how long I’ve been a musician. Yeah, I started singing out of necessity. I spent years in the early 2000s trying to write and record all instrumental guitar stu, but it never really gelled. In 2010 I decided to give vocals a try, in addition to everything else, and released a Metal album. The

songs were decent, but the vocals were lacking. I still had a lot to learn, both in terms of the actual mechanics of singing and mixing vocals so I dropped the idea and decided to enlist the help of some friends that were singers. That decision led to a lot of great music, but they all had their own thing going locally where they were and I needed something a little more sustainable for the long haul. About six years ago I decided to give singing a try again. I approached it much more seriously this time around and happily things turned out much better. I think the timing was just right. A lot of it for me was just allowing myself to let go and have fun. As of today I’ve released four albums (“Propaganda Force-Feed”, “Mark Schuster”, “Love Machine” and “I’ll Fade Away”) with vocals in the past five or six years, and have two more I’m releasing this summer. RRI: Let’s talk about when you first started writing your own songs. MS: The first song I ever tried to write was back in high school. I had two tape recorders. You know, the kind you’d buy at Radio Shack or K-mart. I would record one part, then bounce it over to the other, and so on. High tech! I’ve never forgot how cool that felt! Without a doubt, the writing part of every project I do is most enjoyable. It’s the creative part before any expectations or logistical stu start seeping in. RRI: Is there any stu that you listen back on today and think “man, that was a cool ri” or is it more like “I can’t believe I thought that was good”? MS: Yes, all the time! I’m constantly wondering what I was thinking when I recorded some things. RRI: When did you start shopping your music on the intranet and did you ever have any type of real label interest? MS: My first independently released album was called “Monster Me” in 2005. It was all instrumental. Poorly recorded (8-track), but a lot of fun to do. Good song ideas, just not executed very well. Like many albums since, it was a building block and learning experience that lent some expertise to the next project. The Internet was transforming about that time and allowing independents like me to release music without the help of a label. I’ve never had a big label approach me. To be honest, I don’t know what I’d do if one did. Being a one-man band that doesn’t tour sort of excludes me from that whole world. Most labels are looking for younger, touring bands with a decent following although, that’s changing these

days. I know of at least a few people that started out doing their own thing and now have pretty successful music careers. RRI: In a previous conversation you mentioned that your writing involved “Indie acoustic Rock” and “Prog Rock”. By listening to some of your tracks it sounds like you have become very good at blending the two. Thoughts? MS: I think every musician, somewhere in their career, hopes they’re doing something unique. It’s not easy, especially for younger musicians today. When I first started seriously writing and recording music back in the early 2000s, I still had what I call an “‘80s mentality” about music. I was stuck in the 1980s and everything I wrote sounded like the ‘80s. It was limiting in many ways - both from a fanbase perspective and creatively. So, I slowly retooled over the years and experimented with dierent genres. I went so far as to release an Instrumental Jazz EP, “Mr. Cool” in 2016. I’ve had people tell me, like you, they can hear dierent influences/genres in my music. I’m always happy to hear that. It’s nothing I’m doing consciously, so maybe I’m just trusting my gut more when I write. There’s been no shortage of hard work, trial and error and soul searching over the years! RRI: Give me your thoughts on the following things. RRI: Neon colored guitars. MS: I guess it could be fun in the right situation... Personally, I’m old school. Black please. RRI: Favorite food? MS: Pizza! RRI: You are condemned to a deserted

island for 10 years and you can only bring one album to listen to. What is it? MS: Wow, that’s tough. Maybe Sting, “Nothing Like The Sun”? Very listenable.. RRI: The Cherry Lounge (former live music venue) MS: Lots of fun nights and great memories! Some with that kick ass band Midnight Angel! RRI: Art Casteneda and Brian Roach (former band mates). MS: Great musicians! I still think about Art every now and then. I often wonder what he’d be doing today if he was still alive. I’m sure it would be something absolutely amazing! RRI: What’s next for Mark Schuster? MS: I’m releasing two albums this summer. The first is something totally new for me. I decided to write some Indie/ Acoustic Rock music. At first it was just experimenting, but after a few months I had enough decent songs for an album, so decided to release it this summer. It’s called “I’m Right here”. It’s being distributed to all the major music websites this month. The other is also a little dierent for me. In the past few years, I’ve become a fan of Progressive Metal. I really enjoy bands like Dream Theater and Devin Townsend. So, again - did some experimenting and before I knew it, I had twelve new songs. I’m hoping to release this one later this summer. It’s called “Siamiamatu”. The majority of tracks are progressively influenced but there are also some straight forward rockers on there too.

Tomato Disorders BY GRANT MCCARTY CONTRIBUTOR

I harvested my first tomato from my ‘Cherokee Purple’ plant last week. Planted on May 12, this was a bit earlier than I expected as I’m accustomed to mid-August for my large tomato harvest to begin. While tomatoes diseases have been present in our region, abiotic tomato disorders have been more common. Though this sounds complicated, these are plant issues that are caused by the environment instead of a disease. Let’s look at some of the most common abiotic disorders we see on tomatoes. One of the main ones is Blossom End Rot. In this disorder, tomatoes will have dark brown/black sunken areas at the

bottom of the fruit. While this is a sign of a calcium deficiency, it’s more likely caused by water issues with too little water and watering infrequently. It usually will work itself out. We recommend choosing sites with good drainage, mulching for maintaining soil moisture, and avoid aggressive cultivation that may damage the roots. Leaf roll is a reaction of the plant to conserve water by reducing the surface area. It can also show up with excessive soil moisture during hot temperatures. You’ll see this more common on lower leaves of your plant. While this symptom looks severe, it doesn’t aect plant growth or yield too much. To address this, maintain consistent watering, do

not prune leaves during hot periods, and try to not over-fertilize with nitrogen. Fruit cracking can occur near the shoulders of the fruit near the stem in patterns that can be concentric or radial. These are caused by excessive water uptake during fruit development when interior tissues are expanding faster than the skin. Hot temperatures can make your tomatoes more prone to cracking. To attempt to fi x this, provide consistent and even watering for your tomatoes. Catfacing is a common symptom on heirloom-open pollinated tomatoes. It causes misshapen, ‘brain shaped’ like tomatoes. In essence, really ugly but tasteful tomatoes. Not much is known about this condition. There is some

thought that cold temperatures or even insect damage during flowering may lead to this. Catfacing is a condition that you may need to come to accept when growing heirloom tomatoes and suggestions for addressing it mostly are focused on lessening excessive nitrogen fertilization. As you can see from this list of abiotic disorders, many of them are connected to water. By addressing how and when water reaches the roots of your tomatoes, this will hopefully lead to many of these disorders being addressed during your growing season. ENERGY & ENVIRONMENT

Car travel to northern Wisconsin BY DRS. ROBERT & SONIA VOGL

ILLINOIS RENEWABLE ENERGY ASSOCIATION CONTRIBUTORS

We no longer travel like we did when we were professors at NIU. Flying to other countries, seeing their unique natural areas and meeting others with similar professional interests was stimulating, informative and enjoyable. In retirement we took on several local environmental/ energy projects, dramatically reducing our air travel. We continue to take annual trips by car to Wisconsin to reconnect with important people in our lives: Sonia’s brother and wife near Ashland, and Whitfords, friends of many years, near Westfield. This past week we travelled to Ashland. We enjoy visiting Sonia’s brother and wife and reacquainting ourselves with the far north as we spent a year studying at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. We lived in a tent for the entire summer at Amnicon Falls State Park. When we arrived in mid-June the winter ice was still on the lake. We were shocked when we went to class with temperatures in the 80s and left class a few hours later when the temperature had dropped 40°F as the wind blew in from Lake Superior. Our studies were in geology and ecology

which included tours of natural areas. This year, viewing waterfalls and spending time on the shores of lake Superior, we remembered having to wait until early September for the lake to warm suciently from the summer’s heat to take a short swim in the bone chilling water. This weekend we saw people swimming for extended periods of time. We assume the water temperature was at least 65°F considering how long people were staying in the water. According to weather records the average temperature in the northern part of the Great Lake has increased by 1.5°F above the average temperature from 1901 to 1962. There are occasional weather related events in the area that garner national news coverage. Lake eect snow storms have increased in frequency and intensity. Formerly we travelled to the area in winter but after a severe lake eect snowstorm we no longer make the winter trip. A few years ago, an extremely heavy rain engulfed the area washing out roads and bridges. It limited local travel for a few years as the local tax base was insufficient for a faster rebuild. Climate change models are predicting an increase in heavy precipitation. More recently the ice

caves of Lake Superior received national news coverage and large numbers of people came to see them before the lake ice thawed and they became unreachable. Since many of the small local resturants close for the winter the unexpected surge in visitors exceeded food service and toilet facilities. This year, we shortened our visit by a day when the temperature soared to 95°F as our hosts have never felt the need for air conditioning as long as they have lived there. The same is true for much of Europe. England recently experienced its hottest temperature of 104°; people are ill prepared for such temperatures. Stan Cox has written about an increase in demand for electricity for air conditioning as global temperatures rise due to climate change. How will society cope if demand exceeds supplies? As we gazed out over Lake Superior we remembered a call to send the waters of the Great Lakes to states in need of water. Since oil and gas are shipped north to meet demand will eorts be made to ship water from the Great Lakes and some of the 200 rivers that empty into them to dry areas? Is such infinite growth on a finite planet financially and environmentally feasible? Since we recognize our car travels

contribute to climate change and the high price of gas sends a market signal to use less of it, we continue to reduce our travel. We remain surprised by the huge volume and high speed of travel on major highways. It seems the trac flows average about 5 to 10 mph over posted speed limits. In a zone with a 70 mph posted speed limit trac flows at 80 mph. Lane switching is common with some drivers weaving in and out of trac at speeds as high as 90 mph. A nother amazing aspect is how many pickup trucks pull mobile homes, cars, bikes, boats and dirt-covered four-wheelers. We only saw three state patrol cars on the round trip of nearly 800 miles. One was parked in the strip between multiple lanes of expressway. Most drivers slowed down when they spotted the car but sped up a short distance later. Two were parked next to vehicles with flat tires. Despite the high speeds, we saw no trac tickets being written. Evidentially a substantial number of Americans have sucient discretionary income to continue their energy consumptive lifestyles while ignoring the climate changing consequences.
