Pritzker to call special session on reproductive rights Move prompted by U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade By Peter Hancock

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. JB Pritzker will call a special session of the General Assembly in the coming weeks to focus on legislation to strengthen women’s access to abortion and other reproductive health services in Illinois. Pritzker made that announcement Friday, just hours after the U.S. Supreme Court released an opinion overturning the landmark 1973 abortion rights case Roe v. Wade. “We knew this day was coming,” Pritzker said at a hastily called news conference in Chicago. “The extremists on the Supreme Court have made an abhorrent decision, one rooted in partisanship, leaving an indelible stain on our nation.” Pritzker had already been scheduled to hold a news conference Friday to highlight legislation he signed recently expanding access to medication that protects against HIV infection. But the Supreme Court’s decision, released shortly after 9 a.m., upended those plans and set off a flurry of reaction, both for and against the ruling. “Today, Illinois Right to Life joins millions of Americans in celebrating the end of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that has denied over 63 million preborn children their most fundamental right: life,” the Illinois Right to Life organization said in a statement. “With today’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health, states have
regained the ability to protect preborn children and their mothers.” Attorney General Kwame Raoul criticized the decision in a statement. “I am extremely disappointed with today’s Supreme Court decision, which jeopardizes the health, the safety and the lives of millions of women in the United States – especially those who already have the least access to health care and other resources,” he said. “This single decision rolls back 50 years of court precedent and with it, decades of progress toward reproductive autonomy.” Illinois is among the states with laws already on the books protecting access to abortion. In 2018, the state adopted a law allowing public funding of abortion through its Medicaid program. And in 2019, lawmakers passed the sweeping Reproductive Health Act which, among other things, enshrines abortion access as a “fundamental right” in Illinois law. Finally, during last year’s veto session, lawmakers passed a bill repealing the state’s Parental Notice of Abortion law, removing the last legal restriction on abortion in Illinois. Friday’s Supreme Court decision will have no effect on those laws. In fact, Justice Brett Kavanaugh, in a concurring opinion, specifically pointed to Illinois and other states as being unaffected by the decision. “Today’s decision therefore does not prevent the numerous States that readily allow abortion from continuing to readily allow abortion,” he wrote. “That includes, if they choose, the (friend of the court) States supporting the plaintiff in this Court: New York, California, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island,

Vermont, Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, New Mexico, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii.” But Illinois’ laws stand in stark contrast to those of some neighboring states that already had so-called “trigger laws” on the books that would either ban or severely restrict access to abortion upon reversal of Roe v. Wade. “Let me make this explicit and clear to women throughout our state, throughout the Midwest and our nation – Illinois will be a safe haven for the exercise of your reproductive rights,” Pritzker said. “In Illinois, Roe v. Wade is still the law and it will remain the law as long as we have a pro-choice legislature and a pro-choice governor.” It wasn’t immediately clear what types of legislation lawmakers would pursue in a special session. One that is likely to come up, though, is House Bill 1464, which prohibits state regulators from revoking or suspending the license of a health care provider solely because they were sanctioned in another state for performing abortions. That measure passed the House this year but requires action in the state Senate. S e n a t e R e p u bl i c a n L e a d e r D a n McConchie, of Hawthorn Woods, suggested in a news release that Democrats may also try to pass legislation to offer public funding for out-of-state residents to receive abortion services in Illinois. “Right now, Illinoisans can already get an abortion in all nine months of pregnancy for any reason and use taxpayer dollars to pay for it. But that’s not enough,” he said. “Now, they want us to help pay for out-of-state residents to travel to Illinois to receive abortions and even allow non-physicians here to perform them.” The Supreme Court’s decision is also certain to cause political fallout in Illinois because it came just four days before the state’s June 28 primary elections, and it is certain to be a top-tier issue going into the Nov. 8 general elections. “For this primary on Tuesday and November’s general election, game on. This is on the ballot,” Sen. Christina Pacione-Zayas, D-Chicago, said at the news conference. Supreme Court’s abortion ruling sets off new court fights By Kevin McGill, Amy Forliti and Geoff Mulvihill Associated Press
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The fall of Roe v. Wade shifted the battleground over abortion to courthouses around the country Monday, as one side sought quickly to put statewide bans into effect and the other tried to stop or at least delay such measures. The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision Friday to end constitutional protection for abortion opened the gates for a wave of litigation from all sides. Many of the court cases will focus on “trigger laws,” adopted in 13 states in anticipation of the ruling and designed to take effect swiftly. Lawsuits could also target old anti-abortion laws that were left on the books and went unenforced under Roe. Newer abortion restrictions that were put on hold pending the Supreme Court ruling have also started to come back into play. “We’ll be back in court tomorrow and the next day and the next day,” Nancy Northup, president and CEO of the Center for Reproductive Rights, which argued the case that resulted in the high court ruling, said Friday. In Louisiana on Monday, a judge in New Orleans, a liberal city in a conservative state, temporarily blocked enforcement of the state’s trigger-law ban on abortion, after abortion rights activists argued that it is unclear. The ruling is in effect pending a July 8 hearing. At least one of the state’s three abortion clinics said it would resume performing procedures on Tuesday. “We’re going to do what we can,” said Kathaleen Pittman, administrator of Hope Medical Group for Women, in Shreveport. “It could all come to a screeching halt.” Also Monday, abortion rights advocates asked a Florida judge to block a new law there that bans the procedure after 15 weeks with some exceptions and is set to take effect this week. The American Civil Liberties Union of Arizona and an abortion-rights group filed an emergency motion Saturday seeking to block a 2021 law they worry can be used to halt all abortions. Planned Parenthood in Utah has challenged a trigger law there that contains narrow exceptions.
Brigitte Amiri, deputy director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s Reproductive Freedom Project, said the organization is looking at “all options” to protect access to abortion. As of Saturday, abortion services had stopped in at least 11 states — either because of state laws or confusion over them. In some cases, the lawsuits may only buy time. Even if courts block some restrictions from taking hold, lawmakers in many conservative states could move quickly to address any flaws cited. That’s likely to be the case in Louisiana. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit filed in state court don’t deny that the state can now ban abortion. Instead, they contend Louisiana now has multiple, conflicting trigger mechanisms in the law. They also argue that state law is unclear on whether it bans an abortion prior to a fertilized egg implanting in the uterus. And while the law provides an exception for “medically futile” pregnancies in cases of fetuses with lethal abnormalities, the plaintiffs noted the law gives no definition of the term. Around the country, challenges to other trigger laws could be made on the grounds that the conditions to impose the bans have not been met, or that it was improper for a past legislature to bind the current one. Laura Herner, a professor at Mitchell Hamline School of Law in St. Paul, Minnesota, said other challenges might call into question whether state laws sufficiently and clearly allow for exceptions to protect the life or health of a pregnant woman. Now that the high court has ruled that the U.S. Constitution does not guarantee the right to an abortion, abortion rights supporters will make the case that their state constitutions protect such a right. A judge heard arguments on that issue Monday in Florida, where attorneys sought an emergency injunction to stop a new law from going into effect Friday. The ban beyond 15 weeks has exceptions to save the pregnant woman’s life or prevent physical harm or in cases where the fetus has a fatal abnormality. The ACLU of Florida has argued it violates the Florida Constitution. In a separate lawsuit filed by a Jewish congregation in Florida, arguments over
religious liberty and the separation of church and state will come into play. Still other cases could be filed as states try to sort out whether abortion bans in place before Roe was decided — sometimes referred to as “zombie laws” — apply now that there is no federal protection for abortion. For instance, Wisconsin passed a law in 1849 banning abortions except to save the life of the mother. Attorney General Josh Kaul, a Democrat, said he does not believe it is enforceable. Abortion opponents have called on lawmakers to impose a new ban. In the meantime, Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin sa id it immediately suspended all abortions, though the district attorneys in Madison and Milwaukee have suggested that they would not enforce the ban. In Michigan, Planned Parenthood challenged a 1931 abortion ban ahead of last week’s Supreme Court ruling. In May, a judge said the ban could not be enforced because it violates the state’s constitution. Abortion rights supporters are now trying to get a proposed state constitutional amendment on the ballot in November to protect abortion and birth control. Idaho, Oklahoma and Texas have adopted laws that allow people to seek bounties against those who help others get abortions. It is an open question as to whether that means people can be pursued across state lines, and legal challenges over those issues are likely to come up in cases of both surgical abortions and those using medicine mailed to patients. The California Legislature, controlled by Democrats, passed a bill Thursday to shield abortion providers and volunteers in the state from civil judgments imposed by other states. In liberal Massachusetts, Gov. Charlie Baker, a Republican, signed an executive order Friday that prohibits state agencies from assisting other states’ investigations into anyone who receives a legal abortion in Massachusetts. The challenge filed in Arizona, where most providers stopped offering abortions, said the legal questions are urgent. Even if abortions resume in weeks or months, the plaintiffs said, “patients may be at greater risk of medical complications or may lose access to abortion altogether as a result of the delay.”

SLOVIANSK, Ukraine (AP) — Scores of civilians were feared killed or wounded in a Russian missile strike Monday on a crowded shopping mall in Ukraine’s central city of Kremenchuk, Ukrainian officials said. U k r a i n i a n P r e sident Volo d y my r Zelenskyy said in a Telegram post that the number of victims was “unimaginable,” citing reports that more than 1,000 civilians were inside at the time of the attack. Images from the scene showed giant plumes of black smoke from the shopping center engulfed in flames, as emergency crews rushed in and onlookers watched in distress. At least 11 people were dead and more than 40 wounded, according to the regional governor, Dmytro Lunin, who said that rescuers were continuning to comb the smoldering debris for more victims. Zelenskyy said the target presented “no threat to the Russian army” and had “no strategic value.” He accused Russia of sabotaging “people’s attempts to live a normal life, which make the occupiers so angry.” The Ukrainian military said the shopping center was hit by missiles fired by Russian Tu-22M3 long-range bombers from the skies over Russia’s western Kursk region. The secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, Oleksiy Danilov, said that one missile hit the shopping center and another struck a sports arena in Kremenchuk. The Russian strike carried echoes of attacks earlier in the war that caused large numbers of civilian casualties — such as one in March on a Mariupol theater where many civilians had holed up, killing an estimated 600, and another in April on a train station in eastern Kramatorsk that left at least 59 people dead. “Russia continues to take out its impotence on ordinary civilians. It is useless to hope for decency and humanity on its part,” Zelenskyy said. Mayor Vitaliy Maletskiy wrote on Facebook that the attack “hit a very crowded area, which is 100% certain not to have any links to the armed forces.” The attack came as Russia was mounting an all-out assault on the last Ukrainian stronghold in eastern Ukraine’s Luhansk province, “pouring fire” on the city of Lysychansk from the
ground and air, according to the local governor. Russian forces appeared to step up an offensive centering on trying to wrest the eastern Donbas region from Ukraine after forcing government troops out of the neighboring city of Sievierodonetsk in recent days. Western leaders, meanwhile, pledged steadfast and continued support for Kyiv. NATO will agree to deliver further military support to Ukraine — including secure communication and anti-drone systems — when its leaders convene in Spain for a summit, according to the military alliance’s secretary-general, Jens Stoltenberg. To the west of Lysychansk on Monday, the mayor of the city of Sloviansk — potentially the next major battleground — said Russian forces fired cluster munitions on the city after dawn, including one that hit a residential neighborhood. Authorities said the number of dead and wounded had yet to be confirmed. The Associated Press saw one fatality: A man’s body lay hunched over a car door frame, his blood pooling onto the ground from chest and head wounds. The blast blew out most windows in the surrounding apartment blocks and the cars parked below, littering the ground with broken glass. “Everything is now destroyed. We are the only people left living in this part of the building. There is no power,” said local resident Valentina Vitkovska, in tears as she spoke about the blast. “I can’t even call to tell others what had happened to us.” Overall, Zelenskyy’s office said at least six civilians were killed and 31 others wounded as part of intense Russian shelling against various Ukrainian cities over the past 24 hours — including Kyiv and major cities in the country’s south and east, but not counting the attack in Kremenchuk and the shelling of the eastern city of Kharkiv where at least three people were killed and another 15 were wounded. It said Russian forces fired rockets that killed two people and wounded five overnight in and near Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, and continued to target the key southern port of Odesa. A missile attack destroyed residential buildings and wounded six people, including a child, it said. In Lysychansk, at least five high-rise buildings in the city and the last road bridge were damaged over the past day, the regional governor said. A crucial
highway linking the city to government-held territory to the south was rendered impassable by shelling. The city had a prewar population of around 100,000, approximately one-tenth of whom remain. Analysts say that Lysychansk’s location high on the banks of the Siverskiy Donets River gives a major advantage to the city’s Ukrainian defenders. “It’s a very hard nut to crack. The Russians could spend many months and much effort storming Lysychansk,” said military analyst Oleh Zhdanov. In other developments, in Germany’s Bavarian Alps, leaders of the Group of Seven countries pledged to continue supporting Ukraine “for as long as it takes.” In a joint statement on Monday after they held a session by video link with
Zelenskyy, the leaders underlined their “unwavering commitment to support the government and people of Ukraine in their courageous defense of their country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.” The U.S., meanwhile, appeared ready to respond to Zelenskyy’s call for more air defense systems after Russian troops hit Kyiv with long-range missiles on Sunday. Washington was expected to announce the purchase of an advanced surface-toair missile system for Ukraine. Britian’s defense ministry said Russia is likely to rely increasingly on reserve forces in the coming weeks of the war. Analysts have said a call-up of reservists by Russia could vastly alter the balance in the war but could also come with political consequences for President Vladimir Putin’s government.

Return of the Peaches By Paula Hendrickson Contributor
Thanks to the International Women’s Baseball Center, this weekend Rockford celebrates the 30th anniversary of the film A League of Our Own – about on the Rockford Peaches – and previews the upcoming series, A League of Their Own, which was inspired by the film. While the series doesn’t premiere on Prime Video until August 12, a sneak preview is among the weekend’s events. Rockford City Market kicks things off Friday, July 1 with a special Peaches theme and an appearance by actress Megan Cavanagh, who played Marla “What a Hitter” Hooch in the movie. Cavanagh will pop in at all the weekend’s events. Friday evening has something for every budget, from a $100-per-plate fundraising party at The Standard (5:00-8:00pm)
to a free Friday Night Flix screening of the 1992 film starting at 7:00pm at Davis Park. The action moves to the Peaches’ home field on Saturday, July 2, at Beyer Stadium – 15th Avenue and Seminary Street – with a meet-and-greet starting at 10:00am. A “celebrity” softball game at begins at 11:30. Both are free and open to the public. Sat u rday e ven i ng t he Coronado Performing Arts Center hosts a free screening of the TV series’ first episode at 8:00pm, but the fun starts at 6:00 with a street fair in front of the theater. Here’s where I admit that I’ve already seen all eight episodes of the series. When my editors at Emmy assigned me to write a feature on the show – seri-
ously, how could they not? – Prime Video sent screeners of the entire first season. When I spoke with co-creator/executive producer and star Abbi Jacobson, one of the first things I said was, “Hi from Rockford.” Her reaction: “Woah! That’s so cool!” I had a similar response from every person I interviewed for the article. It’s nice to know outsiders appreciate Rockford and its history as much as, if not more than, most locals do. Although the show sent teams of researchers and producers here a couple times, Jacobson has yet to make the pilgrimage, but intends to visit at some point. She missed the first trip because she was shooting the Comedy Central series Broad City. “And when people went again, we were in baseball training,” Jacobson said, adding, “We did a little
training before the pilot, in 2020, right before the pandemic. Then we did more extensive training before we started shooting last year.” Their team did in impressive job researching not just baseball, the time period, or social issues of the time, but Rockford itself. It’s more than a setting in the show, it’s almost another character. There are lots of Rockford-related Easter eggs scattered throughout the series that locals will enjoy. Bear in mind, A League of Their Own is not a documentary, so some liberties were taken. But all things considered, I felt the series represented Rockford well. On Wednesday, July 6th from 1pm to 8pm the Council of Rockford Gardeners will host its rain or shine free Annual Garden Walk. After a 2-year hiatus, due to the pandemic restrictions, we are proud to present a safe, spectacular day visiting some of the Rockford area’s finest gardens. Once again, in our 30-plus year tradition we exhibit six gardens that truly represent the deep history of gardening in our community. You can start your stroll at any of our featured gardens, like the Drnek garden on East State Street. This older home features an oasis along a busy street. A standout along the side of the home is a magnificent display of snowball hydrangeas. A newly developed dry creek bed leads you to the family’s backyard retreat. You can sit on the patio watching visiting wildlife drawn to the many plantings and pond. The border areas of this stately property are appreciated by the many neighbors on foot and by folks in cars passing by. Just a few steps to the north you enter into the Panek garden. This quaint little
storybook garden reminds one of a French country cottage garden. The front of the property is planted with cool colors that evoke tranquility, while strolling to the backyard you’ll see pops of cheery color. Vegetables and herbs are interspersed around the focal point of a hand-built pergola. Spring irises from a beloved mother allows her memory to live on throughout this romantic garden. Next our stroll moves along to the Webber garden. This garden was originally scheduled to be on the Garden Walk a few years ago. Unfortunately the loss of a 100+ year old oak tree, just a few weeks before the event, ended their participation. Much hard work and redesign of plantings has resulted in the inclusion of their garden this year. The large shortened trunk of the once-mighty oak still remains as a natural pedestal displaying potted annuals. Sitting on the deck overlooking the koi pond you can view the many shade perennials gracing the property. Strolling further we approach the Ketcher garden. As you enter through the arbor of climbing hydrangeas one will experience the butterfly garden, then
hear the splashing of the dual waterfalls entering into a pond filled with water lilies and various aquatic plants. Winding down a decomposed granite path, you will find many ornamental grasses, ferns, woodland plants and more than one hundred varieties of hostas. Each plant or grouping of plants has been marked with its common name. As our stroll continues to the Owen garden, we reach a brick walkway that leads to an elevated front door wrapped by large beds of various ground covers as a background for coral bells and several white pines. A flagstone walk leads to the backyard that presents an array of different pine trees and a European beech tree. The backyard is home to a paved stone patio with lots of seating and a fire pit as well as a raised porch. You’ll notice this space features a host of flowers, hanging baskets, a birdbath and feeders to attract many birds and butterflies. The Garden Walk stroll concludes across town to the east at the Hoelting garden. This property originally was new construction allowing for a blank slate to design. Today, 36 years later the entire garden has changed and evolved over
the years through trial and error. The garden features perennials in primarily purples and pinks, all hardy and easy to maintain with long bloom times. Robotics Expo
Robotics and Automation Expo showcases new machines By Charles Herbst Contributor
On Thursday, June 16, about a half dozen manufacturers showed the Rockford area the latest in industrial machinery and automation. The fair was sponsored by the Illinois Small Business Development Center at Rockford Chamber and was hosted by A-American Machine and Assembly, located on Elmwood Avenue near Sportscore I. Impressive strides have been made in electronic components, batteries, programming, and wireless technology. It was an interesting chance to see how far we have (or haven’t) come since the days of Mid-Twentieth Century science fiction. T he f i r st mac h i ne we s aw w a s “Geoffrey,” a Danish-made, battery powered, remote-controlled wagon that could carry about 500 pounds. With a MiR250 platform topped by a Robex top, Geoffrey had 8 sensors that kept the machine from crashing into someone or some other obstruction. This machine could effortlessly carry payloads across a warehouse without complaint for up to 13 hours before its batteries needed recharging. Working with a picker, this machine was designed to make filling orders a snap. It could also be used to make a remote delivery. Unlike a manually operated dolly or a fork truck, Geoffrey could be remotely programmed to complete a very specific task. The machine can be positioned to within one inch of the intended target. Next, we were introduced to “Rosie,” who delivered a basket full of canned soda. This robot is called a KettyBot and designed and manufactured by Pringle Robotics, located in Peoria. The robot specializes in greeting and escorting,
and can engage by voice interaction in a bevy of different languages. The robot can also display customized advertising. Rosie did not have arms, but instead relied on shelves more akin to a kangaroo’s pouch to deliver items. Like Geoffrey, Rosie has sensors to keep her from crashing into people or other objects. She is able to navigate a defined path through a room to offer beverages, hors d’oeuvres, or other supplies at a party or in a more stationery environment like an office. Rosie has worked as a restaurant hostess in Peoria and has also been used by OSF St. Francis Hospital. At the restaurant, Rosie helped the human waitstaff generate generous tips. At the expo, Rosie had a little trouble navigating the break between carpeting and a hard surface floor and, which she may be able to take a drink order, we might not trust her with a cocktail filled to the rim. Still, the robot can do an impressive number of ordinary transporting and order-taking tasks. She can be loaded up in the kitchen with food and a waiter (or even a customer) can easily unload her at the table. “Tilda” is a Puductor 2 cleaning robot, also made by Pringle Robotics, that can disinfect a room. She can do rugs and hard surface floors, but, of course, does not do windows. Her ability to remove pathogens from the air makes this a cost-effective way to keep customers and employees healthy. She is used by several companies in the gaming industry, including at the Blue Chip Casino in Michigan City, Indiana. Finally, we caught up to a row of 3D printers that were churning out holders for attaching cellphones to camera

tripods. Mike Rogers of the Illinois SBDC was there and offers free classes at NIU-Rockford for area entrepreneurs and others interested in learning how to use a 3D printer. Upon completion of two classes, a student will be certified as proficient in the operation of the machine. This is a transferable skill that can be used both in our local area and worldwide. 3D printing works by “printing” successive slices of an object on top of each other. After thousands of layers have been printed, the (often plastic) material forms the completed object. The machine is driven by a set of computer instructions as to how each layer should be put down. When the part you need immediately is in Singapore, it’s possible for the Singaporeans to simply send you instructions over the Internet, and your part can be manufactured locally by a 3D printer. Similarly, if an obsolete spare part is out of production, it’s possible to fabricate one quickly and easily using the 3D printer. In recent years, the price of a 3D printer has plummeted to around $300 for a very basic model. This is something that a household might consider, particularly if a hobbyist lives there. Although the machine and technology have tremendous potential, many of the details and benefits are relatively unknown. In a recent outreach program to Rockford Public School students, only 2 of 1200 students recognized what the device was. At the expo, we had a lot of time to speak with the vendors that were present. Most of the people there had already experienced other careers and transitioned into robotics. They’ve found their work in robotics to be rewarding and very exciting. Often their jobs include designing more ergonomically functional workplaces. There was little or no desire to use these machines to eliminate the jobs of human workers. In many cases, workers cannot be found to do some of the tasks these machines can do. One former tool and die maker gave the example of sanding fiberglass, a particularly nasty job that most humans would rather not perform, even for premium wages. But a machine can do the job without complaint. There is also a worker shortage. A KettyBot like Rosie can increase the productivity of the existing waitstaff in a restaurant that is constantly shorthanded. The product literature for MiR robots like Geoffrey stresses not only the need to cope with labor shortages, but how these machines can improve worker safety, eliminate human error, and free workers
to do more productive, value-added tasks. Many of the vendors and SBDC staff were somewhat taken aback at the suggestion that someone might ask to use these products and services for offensive and other nefarious purposes. For example, using a 3D printer to fabricate guns, which are sometimes known as “ghost guns.” Well-aware that technology can be used for good or for evil, several of them described their careers and ambitions as wanting to work for good and the betterment of society. It was gratifying to see the future through their lens of optimism. Seeing the machines in action and our conversations made it clear: There are not going to be many job opportunities for unskilled workers. Jobs in restaurants, warehouses, grocery stores or janitorial work are either endangered or gone. A major resource in this community is the Rock Valley College Advanced Technology Center in Belvidere, where courses in mechatronics are offered. Many of these courses are free or offered very inexpensively. If Rockford aspires to be a manufacturing center of excellence, its industrial workforce will need these skills as a prerequisite.
What humans add to the equation
Wondering when a machine becomes a robot, we consulted several dictionaries. The consensus was that a robot is a machine that resembles a human or performs tasks mechanically with humanlike skill. Using that definition, calling any of the machines at the expo “robots” is probably an exaggeration. We compared the “robots” at the expo to the “positronic” robots of author Isaac Asimov, the Jetsons, or even the histrionic Daleks, screaming for the extermination of Doctor Who as well as all of humankind. Unlike the “robots” at the expo, the robots of science fiction, for better or worse, really were humanlike, because they had sentience, intelligence, creativity, and personality. But they were just that—fiction. While the directions may be stunningly complex, real machines still can only do exactly what they are programmed to do. Machines can add faster than we can, and they can perform backbreaking labor tirelessly without injury. But in 2022, a machine cannot complete any task where creativity, compassion, or personality are essential. And that’s what we as humans bring to our planet.

Dealing with heat in the summer vegetable garden BY GRANT MCCARTY CONTRIBUTOR
It seems that our summer gardens were just planted and yet these last weeks of growing in severe heat conditions may have you seeing some signs of heat stress. This period when temperatures are above 90F during the day and no rain can result in changes to the growth of your plants. While the day temperatures are a concern, night temperatures are as well. Let’s look at how this heat impacts the main plant goals right now: flowering and pollination. If you are seeing a number of flowers on
tomatoes, peppers, beans, or squash but not any pollination/smaller fruit development just yet, it could be heat related. Flowers can form and die before becoming fruit when air temperatures are between 75 F to 95 F. Evening temperatures above 70 F may also impact this too. Keep your plants well-watered during this period as to not stress them more and hope for better temperatures. Some cool season crops are prone to ‘bolting’. This action is when certain crops will produce a premature seed stalk and makes the crop unusable. Common crops prone to bolting include spinach, carrot,
broccoli, cabbage, and lettuces. Warm temperatures tend to be the main culprit for this condition and there is not much that can be done to salvage the crop as the edible parts will be bitter in flavor. If you find this happens more often, look to plant these crops for the fall instead of the spring. Hot temperatures will modify the type of flowers produced on pumpkins, squash, melons, and cucumbers. Each of these plants produce male and female flowers on the same plant. Female flowers have a small swollen area behind their flower while male flower is a straight stem. High temperatures above 90 F during the day
and 70 F at night will lead to more male flowers develop. I have noticed this in the last week with my zucchini as all are male flowers. To further complicate squash family pollination, bees do not tend to be as active in pollinating once temperatures are over 90 F. The ideal temperature range is between 60 and 90 F. In addition, most male and female flowers will open early in the morning and only for a single day. A return to “normal” weather should put your plants back on track to growing and yielding for you. During the start of the war on terrorism President Bush advised the public to go shopping. Another response at the time was to declare that we were not going to sacrifice the American standard of living. Those messages stand in marked contrast to those heard by citizens during World Wars I and II when they were required to limit their consumption of goods and services. Having grown up during the Great Depression and World War II we experienced a range of governmental policies placing restrictions on consumption in an e�ort to save resources and distribute what was available more equitably. The policies were designed to temporarily change living patterns in the general population. For example, During WW I the White House lawn became home to a flock of sheep fenced in but serving as free roaming lawn mowers who fertilized the lawn with their wastes and reduced the maintenance costs of lawn care. World Wars I and II included rationing foods such as meat, sugar, butter and canned goods. Citizens were encouraged to plant Victory Gardens and grow their
own fresh fruit and vegetables. They were also taught to can food for later consumption. Price ceilings were placed on most goods to prevent price gouging and limit consumption. Ration books on meats and processed foods vital for troop health were distributed to citizens. Gasoline, butter, canned milk and sugar were rationed with gasoline limited to 3 gallons per week. Sugar rationing was set at half the previous levels of consumption. Government policies encouraged families to reduce food wastes by making meals based on food left over from earlier meals. To feel comfortable living with reduced heating levels in their homes and buildings citizens were encourage to dress warmly. Recycling rubber, paper, metal and cooking fat, garden hoses, shoes and bathing caps were implemented. Used oil was reprocessed and returned to use and used tire were recapped for reuse. Cub scouts were taught to fold old newspapers into bags used for wounded troops to spit into while hospitalized. Victory bonds and stamps were sold to adults and students to help fund the purchase of military equipment. Following the end of the WW II the economy was reorganized to encourage
the consumption of goods and services. The waste not, want not mentality of earlier generations lingered on in the older generation, but eventually we became a throwaway society. A combination of advertising and designing goods and services reduced their useful lives, limited their ability to be repaired and accelerated their disposal as wastes has come to dominate our economy. Given the dramatic rise in the cost of goods and services and supply shortages, our consumption is forcing people to limit their consumption based on economic necessity. During tough economic times there is a tendency to limit or ignore environmental concerns unless government polices support them. During the Great Depression the government created the Civilian Conservation Corps focused on environmental projects. Another common practice during early periods of economic stress involved eating local foods in season. As the economy expanded, a diverse range of out of season foods were imported from distant countries driving up greenhouse gases. A recent article by Malik and Lu calls on the world’s a�uent to eat local foods. Transporting food between countries accounts for nearly a fifth of the greenhouse gas emissions from the
food sector. Over a third of food transport emissions result from transporting fruits and vegetables doubling the emissions released by growing them. Eating locally grown foods can cut emissions while supporting the local economy. Government sanctions of Russian gas and oil are a major factor in today’s high energy prices. As high prices continue to rip through the economy they will demonstrate in a painful way how important low cost energy supplies are to the economy and our standard of living. A number of energy analysts believe that another factor contributing to high energy prices is that the world has already consumed the supplies of low cost energy sources and society will change in response to them. Given existing conditions individuals and communities are increasingly focused on providing local food security. Programs and leadership are already working on the issue but they are always in need of more support. Government actions from earlier periods of economic stress have been implemented and but additional support is needed. Environmental and sustainability concerns need to be integral to such actions. Of course, peace would change the situation.
