Registration now open for Natural Land Institute’s Wander at the Wetland event: Natural Land Institute (NLI) will hold their annual outdoor winter event, “Wander at the Wetland: Full Moon Snowshoe & Hike” on Thursday, February 22, 2024 at Nygren Wetland Preserve (3190 W. Rockton Rd., Rockton, IL). This free family friendly event is an open house style affair that will start at 4:30 p.m. and end at 8:00 p.m. All ages will enjoy the winter landscape of the prairies and wetlands while walking, snowshoeing or skiing along a trail lined with hundreds of luminaries. The trail is under a mile and folks can warm up at the start of the trail with a bonfire and about halfway around it at the wetland bonfire. Guides will be available to lead groups or attendees can hike the trail on their own. Luminaries are sponsored by NorthPointe Health and Wellness Campus. Snowshoes are available to rent at the event for a $10 donation to NLI and are sponsored by Rocktown Adventures. Attendees may bring their own snowshoes or skis. Refreshments such as hot cocoa, cookies and snacks will be available at the red barn where the check-in and resting tables are located. This is an all outdoor event so everyone is encouraged to dress for the weather and wear boots. Challengers to Trump’s ballot access hope for quick decision BY PETER HANCOCK

SPRINGFIELD – A national voting rights organization is asking a Cook County judge to overturn a ruling from the Illinois State Board of Elections and block former President Donald Trump from being listed on the March 19 Republican primary ballot. Lawyers for the group Free Speech for People filed an appeal of the election board’s decision immediately after it was announced Wednesday. They are also

asking the court to decide the matter in just a few days, before local election o�cials begin sending out vote-by-mail ballots on Thursday, Feb. 8. “We think the matter is urgent, both because of the overseas ballots being sent out on Feb. 8, at the earliest, and because of the nature of what is at stake here,” the group’s president, John Bonifaz, said in an interview Friday. “There should not be a candidate who was so clearly disqualified under our Constitution appearing on the ballot for president in Illinois or any other

state.” The legal challenge ran into a minor roadblock Friday when lawyers for the Trump campaign filed a motion to assign the case to a di�erent judge. The case had been assigned to Judge Mary Trew, but in response to the campaign’s motion, the court quickly reassigned it to a di�erent judge, Tracie Porter. The Trump campaign gave no reason for its request. Illinois law allows each party in a civil action to make one request for substitution of a judge without cause. “This is a transparent attempt to delay resolution of this matter,” Caryn Lederer, lead counsel for the objectors, said in an interview Friday. Free Speech for People was founded in 2010 in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, which held corporations and other outside groups could spend unlimited funds on electioneering. The group describes itself as a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that works for free and fair elections. Following Jan. 6, 2021, when thousands of protesters stormed the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to prevent Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 election, Free Speech for People began launching legal campaigns in hopes of preventing public o�cials who supported the rioters from running for reelection in 2022. In June 2021, the group sent letters to chief election o�cials in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. They contended that if Trump were ever to run for president again, he would be barred by Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, which prohibits former public o�cials who take part in an insurrection or rebellion against the United States from holding public o�ce again. The group also launched unsuccessful attempts to prevent members of Congress who expressed support for the Jan. 6 rioters from running for reelection in 2022. Those included Republican Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene, of Georgia, as well as Paul Gosar and Andy Biggs, of Arizona. In Illinois, the group is supporting five individuals who signed on to the objection that was rejected by the State Board of Elections and which is now being reviewed by the Cook County Circuit Court. The elections board rejected the challenge on the grounds that it did not have statutory authority to decide questions of constitutional law. It also said there was no evidence that Trump knowingly made a false statement when he attested on his candidate filing forms that he was qualified for the o�ce of president.

Brambles: Choosing the right varieties BY GRANT MCCARTY CONTRIBUTOR

Last week, I discussed growing brambles which are primarily blackberries and raspberries. This perennial small fruit produces canes which emerge in the first year, called primocanes, before they overwinter into the next year where they are now called floricanes, producing the fruit you desire. In selecting your varieties, there can be important characteristics to look at as you look through catalogs or online. Bramble varieties can include thorny or thornless. As you can imagine, a thorny variety will have thorns on it compared to a thornless. One of the challenges you may encounter is that the variety that grows

well for us in the region could be a thorny variety. For example, ‘Prime Ark 45’ and ‘Prime Ark Horizon’ blackberries are recommended varieties and have thorns. The other growth characteristic is erect, semi-erect, or trailing. This is based on the canes and how they grow. Erect canes would not need any trellising and are upright. A semi-erect canes would need trellising but not as much as the plant would have an erect trait. A trailing type needs trellising. In the blackberry varieties of ‘Prime Ark 45’ and ‘Prime Ark Horizon’, both of these are erect. The final decision you will make is whether you want to grow floricane or primocane fruiting. A floricane fruiting variety is a traditional bramble with buds

that develop in the fall on primocanes that then overwinter the next year, flowering, and producing the fruit. This usually means a harvest in early or mid-summer. While floricane fruiting raspberries would grow fine in Northern Illinois, we would not recommend floricane fruiting blackberries. Primocane fruiting will produce canes in the spring, flower in mid-summer, and produce fruit in the late summer into fall. In the winter, you prune out the primocanes and start the cycle over. In this scenario, you do not need to overwinter. Some growers will attempt to overwinter these primocane fruiting types, getting a double crop basically; however, it may be challenging for Northern Illinois. So then, ‘Prime Ark

45’ and ‘Prime Ark Horizon’ are primocane fruiting types with erect canes and thorns. Beyond the blackberries, there can be di�erent colors of raspberries. A yellow raspberry is basically a red one without pigment. Black raspberries tend to be a more compact variety but can not always be as winter hardy. Recommended varieties of black include ‘Bristol’, ‘Jewel’, and ‘Allen’. For yellow, ‘Goldie’, ‘Amber’, ‘Fall Gold’, ‘Anne’ and ‘Honeyqueen’ are recommended. Next week, I’ll continue the discussion on planting, management, and recommended varieties of traditional red and black berries. On our farm there is a relatively small oak forest. We know some of the trees had been periodically harvested before we bought it; we burned branches from the harvests in a wood stove to provide supplemental house heat. We started to manage the woodland for ecological purposes, burning it periodically to eliminate encroaching brush and garlic mustard and to encourage the return of native spring flowers characteristic of an Illinois woodland. Over the years we lost a few bigger trees during storms at a slow rate which did not cause any major concern. We plant young trees each spring as part of the Rock River Trail Initiative started by Frank Scheir, the late owner of the Rock River Times, now coordinated by Greg Farnham. Steve Rypkema manages the tree distribution program which supplies trees to participating organizations interested in restoring the woodlands along the Rock River Watershed in Illinois

and Wisconsin. While we continue to obtain and plant native oak saplings we noticed an increase in the number of old oak trees dying in our woodlands. Others with oak woodlands are also observing an increase in mature oak tree deaths on their properties. The loss of oaks is occurring in many areas of the country and we have yet to learn of any single factor accounting for their loss. Certainly drought conditions and heat waves in summer contribute to the oak decline. Another factor to consider is climate change but we have yet to see a definitive answer to why oak trees are in decline. Earlier losses of American Elms were attributed to Dutch Elm disease on trees imported from Europe. Eventually some elm trees developed resistance to the diseases. The more recent loss of ash trees was attributed to emerald ash borers which were thought to have arrived from China in wood pellets used in shipping. An aggressive dead tree removal program was put in place to limit its spread in urban settings. Societ y has long recognized the

ecological benefits of intact ecosystems such as oak forests but we need to save and enlarge areas of native woodlands. There are historic examples of societies collapsing after they depleted their native forests. A recent study indicated that the Maya Civilization may have collapsed after they had consumed their forest resources. Following the loss of their forests, rainfall decreased and droughts occurred which undermined their food supplies contributing to the societal collapse. A 2021 research report in Nature indicated that a significant portion of the Amazon rain forest was no longer functioning as a carbon sink and had become a carbon emitter. Felling trees in the rainforest and turning the land into agricultural uses was identified as a major factor underming its role as a carbon sink. While destroying the rainforest continues there are calls to end clearing the forest and implementing replanting e�orts. During the depression of the 1930s young men were hired to restore woodlands across the U.S. In this part of Illinois many woodlands were planted by the

Civilian Conservation Corps. A similar large scale program could be implemented once the cause of the oak decline is more clearly understood. While few people rely on wood energy to heat their homes, many other uses of wood are economically important. Undervalued benefits of intact native forests include protecting the biodiversity of plants and animals, absorbing rain, reducing floods, storing water and generally impacting the water cycle. Forests have a role in distributing wind and water around the planet. Protecting and expanding forests of native species could help stabilize the water cycle and continue to serve as carbon sinks. Protecting existing woodlands and expanding their range remains an important conservation e�ort. We have been planting young oaks over the years and they appear to be thriving. We also noticed many new young oaks growing in areas where mature trees had died. We hope some of these young trees could develop resistance to the factors contributing to oak decline.

Blinken returns to Mideast in push for hostage deal and postwar plan for Gaza, but obstacles loom By Matthew Lee, Wafaa Shurafa and Samy Magdy Associated Press

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Saudi Arabia’s crown prince Monday at the start of his fifth visit to the Middle East since the outbreak of the war in Gaza, hoping to press ahead with a potential cease-fire deal and postwar planning while tamping down regional tensions. But on all three fronts he faces major challenges: Hamas and Israel are publicly at odds over key elements of a potential truce. Israel has dismissed U.S. calls for a path to a Palestinian state, and Iran’s militant allies in the region have shown little sign of being deterred by U.S. strikes. In Gaza, meanwhile, Hamas has begun to re-emerge in some of the most devastated areas after Israeli forces pulled back, an indication that Israel’s central goal of crushing the group remains elusive. Video footage from the same areas shows vast destruction, with nearly every building damaged or destroyed. Blinken met w ith Crow n Prince Mohammed bin Salman shortly after arriving in the Saudi capital, Riyadh. Saudi officials have said the kingdom is still interested in normalizing relations with Israel in a potentially historic deal, but only if there is a credible plan to create a Palestinian state. But any such grand bargain appears a long way off as the war still rages in Gaza, where 113 bodies were brought to hospitals in the last 24 hours alone, according to the Health Ministry in the Hamas-ruled territory. It says another 205 people were wounded. T he fata l it ies br ing t he overa l l Palestinian death toll from nearly four months of war to 27,478. The ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its count but says most of the dead were women and children. The war in Gaza has leveled vast swaths of the tiny enclave, displaced 85% of its population and pushed a quarter of residents to starvation. A video circulating online Monday showed masked gunmen leading a line of shirtless detainees past bombed-out buildings in northern Gaza, forcing them to shout out that they are thieves. The Associated Press was not able to independently confirm the incident, but it is consistent with AP reporting.

It was the latest sign that Hamas, which has ruled Gaza since seizing power from rival Palestinian forces in 2007, is reasserting control in parts of the north. Residents say Hamas-led security forces, which numbered in the tens of thousands before the war, have begun to reappear in some areas where they focus on distributing civil salaries and cracking down on looters. The Israeli military says it has launched targeted operations in northern Gaza over the last week to prevent Hamas from rebuilding its capabilities. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to continue the war until Israel crushes Hamas’ military and governing abilities and wins the return of the 100-plus hostages still held by the militant group after the Oct. 7 cross-border raid that ignited the war. Hamas and other militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, in the attack and abducted around 250. More than 100 captives, mostly women and children, were released during a weeklong cease-fire in November in exchange for the release of 240 Palestinians imprisoned by Israel. Meeting with troops on Monday, Netanyahu said Israel had defeated 18 of Hamas’ 24 battalions, without providing evidence. “We are on the way to absolute

victory, and I want to tell you that we are committed to it and we will not give it up.” The United States, Qatar and Egypt have drawn up a proposal for a cease-fire of several weeks and the phased release of the remainder of the hostages. But Hamas, which has yet to publicly respond to the proposal, has said it won’t release any more captives until Israel ends its offensive. The militants are expected to demand the release of thousands of Palestinian prisoners in return — demands Netanyahu has publicly ruled out. The war has ignited tensions across the region, with a flurry of strikes and counterstrikes raising the risk of a wider conflict. Isr a e l a n d L e b a n o n’s p o w e r f u l Hezbollah militant group trade fire across the border on a daily basis, and in recent weeks apparent Israeli strikes have killed senior Hezbollah commanders. A drone attack launched by Iran-backed militants killed three U.S. soldiers near the Jordan-Syria border last week, prompting a wave of retaliatory U.S. strikes. The United States and Britain have also carried out strikes on the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen in response to their attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea.

Zelenskyy signals a shakeup of Ukraine’s military leadership is imminent at a critical point in war BY ILLIA NOVIKOV AND SAMYA KULLAB ASSOCIATED PRESS

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he is thinking about dismissing the country’s top military o�cer as part of a broader leadership shakeup, a possibility that has shocked the nation fighting a war to end Russia’s invasion and also worried Ukraine’s Western allies. Zelenskyy confirmed in an interview with Italian broadcaster RAI TV released late Sunday that he was thinking about remov i ng G en. Va ler i i Za lu zh ny i, the popular commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces. He said he was contemplating the move to ensure the country remains led by individuals who are “convinced of victory” against Russia. “A reset, a new beginning is necessary,” Zelenskyy said. The review is “not about a single person but about the direction of the country’s leadership.” “I’m thinking about this replacement, but you can’t say here we replaced a single person,” Zelenskyy said. “When we talk about this, I mean a replacement of a series of state leaders, not just in a single sector like the military. If we want to win, we must all push in the same direction, convinced of victory. We cannot be discouraged, let our arms fall. We must have the right positive energy.” Zelenskyy’s comments were his first acknowledgement of Zaluzhnyi,’s possible firing. The potential ouster of the general already has caused an uproar in Ukraine and delighted the Kremlin as the

war approaches its second anniversary. Zaluzhnyi is widely respected among Ukrainian service members and considered a national hero. He is credited with stalling Russia’s full-scale invasion in the early days of the war and expertly pushing back Moscow’s troops. Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko criticized the possibility of Zaluzhnyi’s fi ring, saying it was due to the general’s leadership that “many Ukrainians truly trust the armed forces.” “Today is a moment when politics might prevail over reason and country’s interests,” Klitschko said on social media. The mayor of Ukraine’s capital city has been a vocal critic of Zelenskyy. The presidency in turn has accused Klitschko’s o�ce of ine�ciencies. It is unclear who might replace Zaluzhnyi and if his successor would command the same level of respect from Ukraine’s troops and foreign defense leaders. His firing could risk degrading morale at a critical time in the war. According to Ukrainian and Western media reports, Zelenskyy asked Zaluzhnyi to resign last week, but the general refused. Zaluzhnyi has not commented publicly on the reports. Tensions between him and the president have been rising since a much anticipated Ukrainian countero�ensive, which was launched in June with the help of an array of Western weapons, failed to produce major territory gains in Russianoccupied areas, disappointing allies. Ukraine now is grappling with ammu-

nition and personnel shortages while Russia is on the o�ensive, mounting relentless attacks. Four people were killed and at least one was injured in a Monday afternoon strike over the city of Kherson in southern Ukraine, the head of the local military administration said. The need for a broad mobilization to beef up the number of Ukrainian troops has reportedly been one of the areas of disagreement between Zelenskyy and Zaluzhnyi. Zelenskyy said at the end of last year that he had turned down the military’s request to marshal up to 500,000 people, demanding more details about how the mobilization would be organized and paid for. A rift between Zaluzhnyi and Zelenskyy first broke into the open in the fall when the general acknowledged in an interview with The Economist that the fighting with Russia had stalemated. The president strongly denied that was the case. For his part, Zaluzhnyi has published two essays laying out his vision for how Ukraine can win the war. In his writings, he said it was critical for Ukraine to have air superiority, to extending its e�ciency in countering enemy artillery, to build up reserves and to increase electronic warfare capabilities. Dutch Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren announced Monday that the Netherlands was preparing six additional F-16 fighter jets to give Ukraine on top of 18 the country previously pledged. Ukraine’s “aerial superiority is essen-

tial for countering Russian aggression,” Ollongren said in a message on X, formerly Twitter. Denmark also has promised to donate 19 F-16s to Ukraine. Lt. Gen. Serhii Nayev, the commander of the Ukrainian military’s joint forces, said Monday that the country was set to receive missiles with a range of 300 to 500 kilometers (186 to 310 miles) along with the F-16s as part of upcoming defense aid packages from its allies, according to Ukrainian news agency RBK-Ukraine.
