The Fool were a Dutch design collective and band in the psychedelic style of art in British popular music in the late 1960s. The group was named in reference to the Fool tarot card. The Fool guitar (replica). After moving to Los Angeles, the Fool created the largest mural in the world at the time (1968) on the exterior of the Aquarius Theatre for a production of the Broadway musical Hair, by invitation of producer Michael Butler. Simon and Marijke went on to paint other theaters where Hair was playing, in San Francisco, Seattle and Chicago. Thereafter, The Fool split up, Simon, Barry and Josje eventually going back to Amsterdam while Marijke remained in Los Angeles to continue her artistic endeavors. Musical career The Fool also released an eponymous album, The Fool in 1968, in the psychedelic folk style, produced by Graham Nash. It was re-released in 2005.

The Aquarius Theater in 1970, two years after it was painted for the opening of “Hair” Uncovering a secret gem from the Aquarius Theatre’s psychedelic past Alison Martino unearthed a relic outside the club where Jim Morrison recorded “Absolutely Live.” Can you imagine driving down Sunset and seeing the spellbinding psychedelic mural above? It once welcomed visitors to the Aquarius Theatre at 6230 Sunset Boulevard. The historic structure was painted for the opening of Hair in 1968. Eric Clapton, Janis Joplin, and Sal Mineo caught performances of the play during its twoand-a-half year run from 1969-1971. The theater had many lives before and after it was the Aquarius. It debuted as the Earl Carroll Theatre in 1938. Opened during the glittering Golden Age of Hollywood, it could hold 1,000 people. The extravagant supper club advertised THE MOST BEAUTIFUL GIRLS IN THE WORLD on a 20-foot high neon sign, and a facial portrait of entertainer Beryl Wallace—who dated the Page 50 ROCK LEGEND NEWS | APRIL 2022

Hawkwind Lineups With Lemmy

Space Rock Sci-Fi Roots

Hawkwind are an English rock band known as one of the earliest space rock groups. Since their formation in November 1969, Hawkwind have gone through many incarnations and have incorporated many different styles into their music, including hard rock, progressive rock and psychedelic rock. They are also regarded as an influential proto-punk band. Their lyrics favour urban and science fiction themes. Many musicians, dancers and writers have worked with the band since their inception. Notable musicians who have performed in Hawkwind include Lemmy, Ginger Baker, Robert Calvert, Nik Turner and Huw Lloyd-Langton. However, the band are most closely associated with their founder, singer, songwriter and guitarist Dave Brock, who is the only remaining original member. CLASSIC LINEUP (1971-75): Dave Brock – guitar, vocals / Nik Turner – saxophone, flute, vocals / Lemmy (Ian Kilmister) – bass guitar, vocals / Dik Mik – keyboards, electronics / Del Dettmar – synthesizers / Simon King – drums / Robert Calvert – vocals After being fired from the band by Brock in 1975 for carrying drugs across the border to Page 54 ROCK LEGEND NEWS | APRIL 2022

Canada, Lemmy wasted no time in getting his own band together. Named after his title of his final contribution to Hawkwind, Motorhead went on to change the sound and shape of hard rock for years to follow. Dave Brock still carries on under the Hawkwind name, though he is the sole original member. In recent years, he has incorporated elements of techno and rave into the mix. Hawkwind has released over a hundred albums between live and studio since their self-titled debut in 1970, and have gone through constant line-up changes, with Dave Brock as the sole remaining original member of the group. The group’s sound has changed a number of times over the years, but they’ve always stuck to a core Space Rock sound the entire time.

In Search of Space (also known as “X In Search of Space”) Second studio album from Hawkwind, released in 1971. It reached No. 18 on the UK Albums Chart.

Melody Maker reviewed the album in the context of contemporary German acts, feeling that “their instrumental playing” did not reach the same heights but that “they yield precedence to noone in their creative use of electronics.” Beat Instrumental assessed the album as “excellent”, saying that the “music

alternates between spaced out imagery and hard rock” as well as commenting that this is the start of the space trip leading to the “Space Opera”. April 2006 it made No. 83 in Classic Rock’s “The 100 Greatest British Rock Albums.”

Lemmy worked as a roadie for Jimi Hendrix and

The Nice before joining the space rock band Hawkwind in 1971, singing lead vocals on their hit “Silver Machine.” In 1975, he was fired from Hawkwind after an arrest for drug possession. That same year, he founded Motörhead. The band’s success peaked around 1980 and 1981, including the hit single “Ace of Spades” and the chart-topping live album, “No Sleep ‘til Hammersmith.” Page 56 ROCK LEGEND NEWS | APRIL 2022

Jimi Hendrix With Lemmy Kilmister ( back left ) As His Roadie, With Thomas McNuff “I was sleeping on [Jimi Hendrix’s roadie] Neville Chester’s floor — he was sharing a flat with Noel Redding,” revealed Lemmy to Rolling Stone, adding: “So whenever they needed an extra pair of hands I was right there. I didn’t get the job for any talent or anything.” One benefit though was seeing the master at work: “But I did see Jimi play a lot. Twice a night for about three months. I’d seen him play backstage too. He had this old Epiphone guitar — it was a 12-string, strung as a six string — and he used to stand up on a chair backstage and play it. Why he stood up on the chair, I don’t know.” Seeing Hendrix do his thing must’ve provided quite a lot of inspiration for the young rocker: “When he performed, he was magic. You would watch him and space and time would stop.” But it wouldn’t last forever and Lemmy remembered feeling a little pity for the corner Hendrix had painted himself into. More from Rolling Stone > David Anthony Brock (born 20 August 1941) is an English singer-songwriter and musician. He plays electric guitar, keyboards, bass and oscillators. Dave is a founder, sole constant member and musical focus of the English space rock group Hawkwind. Brock was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the annual Progressive Music Awards in 2013.

Pioneers of space rock, Hawkwind took psychedelia, blues and garage and turned it into a style of music that has resonated down the decades, influencing countless bands. Not bad for a bunch of guys who were so haphazard when they played their first gig in 1969 – gatecrashing a local talent night in the Notting Hill area of London – that they didn’t even have a name. Since then Hawkwind have had more than 50 members, with only founder and guiding light Dave Brock remaining a constant. Among those who’ve passed through the Hawk portals include Lemmy, Robert Calvert, Ginger Baker and Michael Moorcock. And let’s not forget exotic dancer Stacia, or the Liquid Len light show. In 1980, Baker joined Hawkwind after initially playing as a session musician on the album Levitation. He left in 1981, after a tour. Live material and studio demos from that period feature on a further two Hawkwind albums, released later in the 1980s. https://www.loudersound.com/features/hawkwind-aguide-to-their-best-albums

Ace of Spades is the fourth studio album by British rock band Motörhead, released on 8 November 1980 via Bronze Records. It is the band’s most commercially successful album, peaking at number four on the UK Albums Chart and reaching gold status in the UK by March 1981. It was preceded by the release of the title track as a single on 27 October, which peaked in the UK Singles Chart at No. 15 in early November.

Moorcock & The Deep Fix. He produced the 1980 album Ace of Spades by Motörhead, followed by their chart-topping live album, No Sleep ‘til Hammersmith.

It was the band’s debut release in the United States, with Mercury Records handling distribution in North America. In 2020, the album was ranked at 408 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list.

“He used to own a mobile studio – Hawkwind hired it out to do Space Ritual and he came with it... Vic was a great man and a great producer, really brilliant... Those were good times; we were winning, we were younger, and we believed it.”

After starting his career as sound engineer with Pye mobile studios for The Animals on their song, “We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” Maile worked with some of the biggest names in the music industry, such as Fleetwood Mac, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, The Pirates, Hawkwind, Motörhead, The Godfathers, The Kinks, The Small Faces, The Inmates, Dr. Feelgood, The Screaming Blue Messiahs, The Lords of the New Church, Girlschool and Michael

Maile, who had worked with the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and the Who, had crossed paths with Lemmy when he was a member of Hawkwind. The bassist recalls in his 2002 memoir White Line Fever:

As Steffan Chirazi observes in the liner notes to the 1996 reissue of Ace of Spades: “Vic Maille at the production helm used an expert ear to translate the monstrous live sound and feel of the band to vinyl.”

C Jukebox Tab signed by Lemmy The A side is certainly well known, but I’m pretty sure ‘Too Late, Too Late’ never made it to an album. Guessing it’s been scraped off the barrel bottom to resell the fans on a ‘Best of’ cd with pretty much material they already own, but as a traditional vinyl B side….here you go. Now the real point of this Motorhead post is to give you a look at the jukebox tab Lemmy filled out a few weeks back. Here’s the thing, Lemmy will do anything for Howard Thompson. HT pretty much has carte blanche with him. In short, when no one was interested in signing Motorhead, and I do mean no one, Howard saw the obvious while running A&R at Bronze, gave them a singles deal and the rest is indeed, history. So tagging along with him to a Motorhead show is a no brainer. Into Lemmy’s inner dressing room we go, complete with all the trimmings. Meaning lots of Jack and coke, and potato chips. And Lemmy of course, gracious as can be. Hanging out with the man from Motorhead is a major thrill, period. For me, the added value of sitting talking with one of The Rockin’ Vickers is basically priceless. Reference

Gilbey’s Gin Roundhouse

Opening in 1847, the Roundhouse was justly celebrated as a marvelous feat of civil engineering. But it served as a repair and maintenance shed for less than two decades before the rapid evolution of railway technology rendered it obsolete. A new purpose had to be found for the round house. In 1869, a man named Gilbey (of Gilbey’s Gin) took on its lease and began to use the venue as a warehouse for his liquor. The gin manufacturer remained for more than 90 years, during which time it continued to attract attention and numerous visits from students and admirers of architecture. It wasn’t until 1964 that it started its life as a cultural venue. Led by playwright Arnold Wesker, the Trade Unions and the Centre 42 movement, it became a cutting-edge arts venue, opening with a performance by a little known band called Pink Floyd. It continued hosting music performances through the 70s and 80s, becoming renowned for presenting radical theatre and new music. Work by Page 84 ROCK LEGEND NEWS | APRIL 2022

UFO with guitarist Larry Wallis was only reflected in this bootleg, recorded by someone from the visitors of a famous London club. Wallis had played in the Shagrat band with Steve Peregrin Took at that time and in the later incarnation of Bloodwyn Pig. In an absolutely remarkable way, UFO drift even further towards head-on rock and roll: they hit Back In The USA and Johnny B Goode with a dash, not forgetting a couple of old blues; Wallis is not very interested in inventive guitar solos, but he cuts his dry rhythm from the heart, which he will demonstrate first with Pink Fairies, and soon with Motorhead - initially they included precisely his guitar. It is very interesting how it would have gone further if Larry had not told Phil Mogg everything he thought about him one day on a drunken case. Well, yes, such marginal elements have no place in a decent group. Next up with UFO will be Bernie Marsden, and then the good and neat Michael Schenker will come in.

Ronnie’s first album was one of his favorites. Taken during rehearsal at the Ritz Ballroom, Cleveland. https://www.facebook.com/motorhead1975

“Rompin’ Ronnie”, “Mr. Dynamo”, or simply “The Hawk”, he was one of the key players in the 1960s rock scene in Toronto. In the early 1970s, Hawkins noticed guitarist Pat Travers performing in Ontario nightclubs and was so impressed with the young musician that he invited him to join his band. Travers later had a very successful recording career and became one of the most influential guitarists

of the 1970s hard rock genre. In 1975, Dylan cast Hawkins to play the role of “Bob Dylan” in the movie, Renaldo and Clara. Hawkins is also notable for his role as a talent scout and mentor of musicians he recruited for his band the Hawks. Roy Buchanan was an early Hawks guitarist on the song “Who Do You Love”. The most successful example of this were the musicians who left him to form The Band. Other musicians Hawkins had recruited went on to form Robbie Lane and the Disciples,[4] Janis Joplin’s Full Tilt Boogie Band,[5] Crowbar, Bearfoot, and Skylark. For his contributions to the development of the music industry in Canada, as a rock and roll musician, and for his support of charitable causes. For more than 50 years, musician Ronnie Hawkins has demonstrated a strong devotion to Canada’s music industry. Often referred to as the “father of Canadian rock n’ roll”, he was a key player in the 1960s rock scene, with his band The Hawks serving as a launching pad for a host of Canadian musicians. Hawkins was born on January 10, 1935, in Huntsville, Arkansas, two days after the birth of Elvis Presley.

Of Motörhead’s classic lineup, which consisted of Lemmy and Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor, he was the last surviving member at the time of his death.

FASTWAY

Fast Eddie Clarke, Pete Way & Damage Control Fastway were a British heavy metal band formed in 1982 by former Motörhead guitarist “Fast” Eddie Clarke and UFO bassist Pete Way.

Hearing that UFO bassist Pete Way was keen to leave that band, the two met and decided their new band’s name would be an amalgamation of their own two names, resulting in Fastway. They advertised in the music press for a drummer and a vocalist. Meanwhile, a rehearsal was organised for which The Clash drummer, Topper Headon, filled in on drums. Headon was doing this as a favour so that Fast Eddie Clarke and Pete Way could rehearse. The ads began showing positive results, cassettes from potential band members arrived; one of these was from a young singer named Dave King. Clarke was impressed with his voice and financed a trip to London for King and, after an audition together, King became the Fastway vocalist. Ex-Humble Pie member, Jerry Shirley, became the drummer. The band sent out demo tapes and were approached by CBS Records for a recording deal. Way announced his departure just as they were about to sign the deal, but CBS had faith in Fastway and decided to sign them despite this setback.

Hawkwind leader Dave Brock, who played alongside Lemmy in his band — and unwittingly helped give birth to Motörhead when he fired Lemmy in 1975. Despite that bumpy parting, the two developed a deep friendship over the years.

The Judas Priest vocalist described the gift as “nuts” but also “magical” as he recalled its arrival following his participation in a memorial event.

Perhaps the most notable result of Lemmy’s tenure with Hawkwind was his switch to the bass. Lemmy used his experience as a guitarist to develop a distinctive riff-based approach.

Lemmy of Motorhead DAMAGE CONTROL was formed in 2006 by bassist, songwriter Pete Way (UFO, Fastway, Ozzy, Waysted,), guitarist, songwriter and producer Robin George (Robert Plant Band, Phil Lynott/Thin Lizzy and Glenn Hughes), Spike (Quireboys) on Vocals and drummer Chris Slade (AC/DC, Uriah Heep, Paul Rodgers and Jimmy Page in The Firm, Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour and Gary Moore) on drums.

Fastway were a British heavy metal band formed in 1982 by former Motörhead guitarist “Fast” Eddie Clarke and UFO bassist Pete Way. The band went through many line-up and member changes and founding member and bassist Pete Way left the band after receiving an opportunity to play with Ozzy Osbourne. In 1983, both guitarist “Fast” Eddie Clarke and bassist Pete Way had become disgruntled with their own bands and decided to work together in a new outfit. They recruited Humble Pie drummer Jerry Shirley, and the then-unknown vocalist Dave King. They took their name from a combination of the founding members’ names. However, Way discovered that he could not break his recording contract with Chrysalis Records and then received an offer to play for Ozzy Osbourne, Way left the band and did not record any songs. The band then brought in session bassist Mickey Feat, the band then recorded their debut album, Fastway (1983) (Feat was uncredited on the album). After critical and commercial suc-

cess, the band toured to promote the album (with one-time Fixx bassist Alfie Agius as their session bass player). The band then recruited Richard McCracken, formerly of Taste, as “permanent” bassist, and released another success in the form of All Fired Up the following year. After the hardships of touring, Shirley and McCracken subsequently left. Clarke died on 10 January 2018, after a battle with pneumonia at the age of 67.[5] No official statement about the disbandment or the future of Fastway has been made following his death. Two years and seven months later Way died on 14 August 2020.

Uriah Heep Salisbury

is the second studio album by British rock band Uriah Heep, released in January 1971 by Vertigo Records. It was produced by Gerry Bron. Unlike their first album, songwriting credits for fully half of the record were attributed to Ken Hensley alone, as opposed to the debut’s collaborative partnership of frontman David Byron and guitarist Mick Box. Soon after the release, drummer Keith Baker left the band,[3] replaced by Ian Clark (from another Vertigo band, Cressida). With Clark, the band embarked on their first US tour, supporting Three Dog Night and Steppenwolf. The front cover of the album depicted a British Chieftain tank, which connects to the title, as Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, England, is a military training area. The original LP release was a gatefold sleeve, with a black-and-white image of the underside of a Chieftain tank on the inside with the turret facing the rear, over which were printed Hensley’s comments on each track. Later reissues would be in a single sleeve.
