FROM THE DESK OF A. BEYEL Greetings from RCC, Well, here we are August 2021, and we are all still scratching our heads concerning this virus and everything else going on in the world. The hopes of putting this in the rear-view mirror keeps being replaced by the fact that we will be living with this for years to come. Our approach at Rockledge Country Club is to continue to practice safe sanitization protocol and follow our local city leaders. We would like to ask you to be diligent personally, if you are feeling unwell, please wait to join us in the clubhouse until you are symptom free.

Moving on to what’s going on at the club, WOW is the game of golf making a comeback! It is so exciting to see the growth for the industry in a whole. The uptick on membership, weddings and outside play is bringing hope that we can continue this path. The fact that we are a Florida course means we play 12 months a year, with the exemption of a little rain here and there, but the course loves to soak it up.

FROM THE DESK OF A. BEYEL With the forcible impact the economy is placing on us you will notice some price increases soon. These increases are across the board and will be considerably less than we were expecting if not for the added activity within our club.

As most of you are aware Rockledge Country Club celebrated our 100th year anniversary in 2018. It is with great excitement that we announce that have been accepted into the Florida Historic Golf Trail.

We are waiting for a formal press release from the State of Florida and are awaiting our place on their website. This is a great honor and will bring more awareness to our course.

September will be here before you know it. Our Labor Day tournament always incorporates sponsoring the Folds of Honor foundation. This organization helps provide scholarships to spouses and children of America’s fallen and disabled service members. Keep an eye out for literature on how you can get involved.

Pickleball seems to keep growing organically. This game is addicting, it is a pleasure to watch people outside feeling the freedom to enjoy themselves. If you are interested in learning to play, get with Jeff Turner and he can either share the basics or introduce you to an instructor.

With great sadness I must address a current loss the club has experienced. As most of you know I am a little shy and try to hold my thoughts out of respect or privacy for a situation. Jan Stewart passed suddenly in July and if I may speak for us, I think there is not one person who knew her that will not feel the void. Please do not get me wrong if I have not spoke of others as anyone we have lost will be missed. The kindness this woman showed, the desire to watch the club flourish, the advice she shared, and the hard work she put into the beauty of the grounds all out of her love of the club will not be forgotten. May her family know how much we appreciated her and hope to continue her vision.

In closing I want to again thank the incredible staff of RCC for all their hard work and dedication.

Turf Care

As we move through these dog days of summer, we want to stay vigilant and prepared for storms. Fortunately, all has been quiet on this front recently, and I would love for it to remain that way. Covid is once again in the forefront of everyone’s mind and we are monitoring the ever-changing recommendations concerning this scourge.

Regardless, we still get to golf and that’s a good thing! The course is very lush right now due to all the recent rainfall. We are battling to keep it mowed on a timely basis. Sometimes it gets difficult when turf conditions are too wet. So far, we have been able to avoid that.

The greens have some rough patches in them and we are still trying to figure out what is going on. We get some improvement then a regression. Most of the green areas are very good and have smoothed out very nicely. We are continuing to research solutions to those few areas that are misbehaving.

A fairway and tee aerification is still planned before summers end.

Also, another greens aerification will be done in late September.

Golf Shop

Good Day Fellow Players, I would like to thank everybody for the well wishes and inquiries about my condition as I’ve returned to work. I am recovering well from the back surgery a month ago and continue to make progress towards playing again. Thank you all!

Speaking of backs, this would be an appropriate time to pass along some golfer wisdom on the simple things you can do to prevent injury before, during and after you play.

1.Check your golf bag. Clear out any unnecessary items to lighten the load. Golf balls are very heavy, you don’t need 3 dozen balls! This will make it easier to move your bag from place to place.

2.STRETCH before and after play.

3.Practice swings before teeing off. You don’t have to hit 100 balls on the range to warm up, even a few practice swings will get the blood flowing and help prevent injury.

4.Squat with your legs when picking up balls and clubs or putting a tee in the ground. It may look funny but will save your back.

5.Walking is an integral part of the game. If you walk to play use a bag with 2 straps, it will balance the weight properly on your spine. If you use a wheeled cart be careful of bending at the waist as you push or pull it and always use both hands on the cart.

I hope this helps you as a player to play more often and avoid those nagging back days that follow us as golfers.
