Romsey The historic market town

Romsey is known for being one of the oldest market towns in Hampshire, as well as having one of the best examples of Norman architecture in history: Romsey Abbey.

T

he market town of Romsey is surrounded by some of the most beautiful countryside in England.

Romsey lies on the River Test, the pure chalk stream that’s famous for its abundance of brown trout. The Test Way is a 44-mile trail that allows you to walk along the banks of the river and enjoy its profusion of wildlife.

Nowadays, the Abbey acts as a parish church for the town with a lively calendar of events, activities, concerts and services held throughout the year. The Abbey is also the last resting place of Lord Louis Mountbatten. As you walk south from Romsey you can see Broadlands, the grand Palladian-style mansion that was once the home of Lord Mountbatten and is now open to the public during summer months.

As the river flows by the town it passes Romsey Abbey, one of the best examples of Norman architecture in Europe. Founded in the 10th-century by Edward the Elder, son of Alfred the Great, it was a Benedictine monastery for nuns that had many royal connections.

Opposite the Abbey is King John’s House, the main building of a medieval complex dating back to 1240 – it’s one of England’s oldest surviving dwellings. Henry de Blois, Bishop of Winchester, built most of the Abbey you see today between 1120 and 1130 though traces of an earlier Saxon church can still be seen.

Markets past and present As well as these historical attractions, Romsey is also known for being one of the oldest market towns in Hampshire. King Henry I granted Romsey its first charter. This allowed a market to be held every Sunday and a four-day annual fair each year in May. Today, Hampshire Farmers’ Markets continues this tradition by holding a market in the town on the first Sunday of each month. Romsey’s Alma Road Car Park is transformed on these days as over thirty stallholders take their places to sell an enticing assortment of produce. Visitor numbers can exceed 3500 on a busy day as people flock to buy meat, fish, cheese, bread, cakes, cider and wine.

As well as the popular Sunday Farmers’ Market, the Cornmarket holds regular weekly street markets on Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

And once a year, the Cornmarket also plays host to the Beggars Fair – a lively one-day festival that has been running since 1993. With the aim of showcasing the best of local talent, Romsey comes alive as folk, jazz, blues and world music, dance displays, and children’s entertainment are performed on streets and venues across the town.

It’s a delight to stroll through these streets with their charming shops, restaurants and cafés. The Abbey, King John’s House and the Town Hall are all within five minutes walk of each other. The surrounding charms of the nearby Test River and the New Forest go to make Romsey one of the most attractive towns in Hampshire.

Old Town’s

historic treasures Southampton’s medieval history is still much in evidence today, particularly in the Old Town district of the city.

argate, the prestigious entrance to Old Town, is just as striking now as it was when first built.

Constructed in the late 12th century as the main gateway to the old walled city, it has seen many additions over the centuries with large towers added around 1290 and new archways in 1764 and 1774. Bargate is an imposing stone and flint structure designed to impress visitors and keep intruders out.

However, a recent survey ordered by Southampton City Council has revealed

penetration by rainwater is eroding the stone on the north side. As the extent of the damage is worsening, the council has agreed to spend £250,000 on refurbishing this iconic landmark.

Once work is completed, the council will look for a permanent user of the space above the gate. It could again be used as an art gallery or community space, which was its last use until 2012. Before that, the room had many functions, acting as the city’s Guildhall until the 1770s and becoming a prison

after the establishment of Southampton’s police force in 1836. It was actually used as a police headquarters during the Second World War. According to English Heritage, Old Town’s Bargate, City Walls and Tudor House are amongst some of the best-managed historical places in the UK. The organisation praised Southampton City Council for its positive management of the area.

Defining the town and giving it character, these significant standing monuments survived the heavy damage suffered by Southampton during the Second World War. Built to defend against land and sea attack, much of the original city wall is still in place making it one of the most complete medieval defence walls in the country.

The Tudor House, a timber-framed building constructed in the late 15th century, is now a museum that looks back over 800 years of life in Southampton. Accessible from the Tudor House Garden is King John’s Palace, which dates back a further 300 years and is one of the finest surviving examples of Norman architecture in the country.

The Merchant’s House is a hidden gem tucked away on French Street. Now in the care of English Heritage, it has been lovingly restored to its mid 14th-century appearance.

The Merchant’s House, once the trading centre of the city, is just one of the historical treasures that make Old Town such a joy to explore.

Period buildings and statues throughout Old Town tell the story of Southampton’s nautical history.

The Grade II listed South Western House now comprises of apartments offering stunning views across the water and city. Formerly known as the South Western Hotel, it was used by passengers travelling on the great liners including the Titanic.

What’s happening in Hampshire this winter?

Fareham’s Big Christmas Weekend, 29–30 November On Saturday 29 November from 9am to 5pm, the town will host an Art & Design Fayre.

This event is new to Fareham and will feature the best of regional and local original art and craft.

Hosted by The Breeze 107, Fareham’s annual Switch on the Lights event will start at 11am on Sunday 30 November. There will be a traditional funfair and entertainment from local community performance groups including the Military Wives Choir. The lights will be switched on at 4.30pm and followed by a firework display.
