THE ROCKHURST COMMUNITY …for others At The Rock, we’re proud of all of our student-athletes and co-curricular participants.

In particular, as of the 2021-2022 school year, our AquaHawks are the winningest boys’ Swim & Dive Program in the state of Missouri.

With 11 consecutive state titles spanning 2005-2014, the team has been led since 1999 by faculty member, coach, and mentor Paul Winkeler.

On the heels of our recent 13th State Championship in the fall of 2021, the Red Bridge YMCA – home of the AquaHawks since 2003 – announced it would be closing in mid-December. The program was suddenly left without a home.

Mobilized to find that new home for swim & dive amidst a lacking rental landscape, an ad hoc committee of the Board of Trustees formed to research potential solutions.

Several weeks into these efforts, a member of the ad hoc committee, Trustee Amy Holewinski brought important information to the school’s attention allowing the school to further its exploration of purchasing the facility.

Motivated by the option to purchase and especially by the support and leadership of Tom McDonnell ’62 – who, along with his wife, Jean, provided a $250,000 gift from their foundation to help secure the contract – the potential to secure a long-term consistent swim home became a true possibility with an offer to purchase the Red Bridge YMCA in mid-January 2022. The offer was accepted and Rockhurst took ownership of the facility, located at 11300 Holmes Road in Kansas City, Missouri, on February 17, 2022.

Within days, The Goppert Foundation made a $1 million gift to Rockhurst for the facility, renaming it The Goppert Rock Plex. The Ann & Gary Dickinson Family Foundation also provided a lead gift of $500,000 to the project.

Continued due diligence reveals that the facility requires nearly $350,000 in immediate capital improvements, fixtures, and equipment, and will also require additional expenditures to support ongoing operations. Rockhurst has been in conversation with other local high school swim programs in need of pool time for their student athletes and these rentals may help offset some of our operational costs.

Though not intended as a community center, the vision is that the facilities will support other swim teams as well as expanded academic and service-learning programming as outlined within.

The opportunity now at-hand is to create an aquatic sports and wellness center to serve our entire Rockhurst Community as well as other swim teams as we show others the way to God, walk with the excluded, and journey with youth along their education and formation pathway.

THE GOPPERT ROCK PLEX The Goppert Rock Plex, located at 11300 Holmes Road in Kansas City, will be ready for use by the August start of the 2022-2023 Swim & Dive season. The Rockhurst facilities team spent the summer working on immediate upgrades and renovations, as well as an assessment of mid- and long-term renovations necessary to restore and continue ongoing active use of The Goppert Rock Plex by multiple constituencies. In addition to the $850,000 purchase price, immediate physical improvements and operating costs were estimated at $596,000.

In addition to capital and equipment costs, there will also be ongoing operational costs of the facility. In the first six years of ownership, we estimate total capital and operating costs, exclusive of any added personnel costs, at approximately $2.6 million, as outlined on the next page of this packet.

Acquisition of The Goppert Rock Plex will revitalize use of the swimming pool and adjacent weight and equipment facilities by Rockhurst student-athletes as well as all students, faculty, and staff. Though we will avail the space to other local Catholic, private, and public high schools as their practice facility through rental agreements, we do not intend to operate the facility as a community center.

Potential Additional Uses of The Goppert Rock Plex Academics:

• STEAM-supportive curriculum and projects Use of a pool would allow our STEAM courses to build structures that could be used at the pool. Cardboard boat races, motorized boats, and underwater robotics are just several of the STEAM opportunities. We currently have all of these as a part of our curriculum and have the resources to build; we just needed the pool to compete.

• Lifetime Sports courses • Physical Education units Students could learn to swim during PE; water polo could be added to the PE curriculum

• Scouting programs could use the facilities for swimming merit badges • Scuba and/or lifeguard training and certification courses coule be offered

Student Camps could include fitness, health, strength, swim, and/or dive camps (as a starter list)

Faculty & Staff could use the facility for fitness, strength training, yoga, etc.

Operations and programming in the space will enable academic, service learning, and wellness programming for the Rockhurst community and school partners. We also envision limited use by community clubs or organizations that offer aquatics-related training, certification, and/or safety courses (see above).

Based on what is envisioned in the space, our investment – and yours – will provide invaluable returns in student achievement, student-athlete success, strengthened educational partnerships, enhanced community wellness, and facility revitalization.

Further, as with all athletics and school operations, donors are welcome to provide annual gifts in support of ongoing operations through the Eyrie Fund and are welcome to designate their giving generally or more specifically (i.e., a gift to support The Goppert Rock Plex or a gift to support the Swim & Dive Program). These gifts are budget-supporting (not budget-augmenting), and receive alternate means of donor stewardship throughout the year as they are received.
