DonnaCarroll’s career began in student affairs — a young professional with an appetite for responsibility
Several moves and promotions later, including appointments as an academic dean and a chief advancement officer, Dr Carroll returned to her home city of New York to work at Fordham University In 1994, she became the 10th president of Dominican University in Illinois, the institution’s first lay leader and one of the youngest presidents in the country
Dr Carroll describes her current position as President of the Association of Catholic Colleges and Universities (ACCU) as an “unexpected blessing ” After 28 years as a president, including a year as interim president of North Central College, Dr Carroll has the opportunity to help advance Catholic higher education at a national level and mentor a new generation of lay presidents
Donna Carroll’s leadership legacy is punctuated by multiple accomplishments, strategic and financial, including the successful name change of Rosary College to Dominican University However, it is her outspoken advocacy for the rights of undocumented and marginalized students that has defined her career and brought her national recognition Dr Carroll received the Strangers No Longer Award from the Archdiocese of Chicago, the Moral Courage Award from Faith in Public Life, and the Dominican Veritas Award, among others In 2022, ACCU honored her with the Rev Theodore M Hesburgh, CSC Award for outstanding contributions to Catholic higher education
Throughout her career, Dr Carroll has balanced institutional responsibilities with active civic, association, and educational leadership She has served on the boards of Interfaith America, Chicago Catholic Schools, Fordham and Scranton Universities, The HistoryMakers, Abraham Lincoln Library, to name just a few, as well many regional and national higher education association boards She is currently a trustee of Dominican Veritas Ministries, the sponsoring board for Dominican elementary and secondary education
Dr Carroll received her bachelor’s degree in English from Wellesley College and her master and doctoral degrees in higher education administration and counseling from the University of Cincinnati She has received honorary degrees from Edgewood College, Fordham University, and Albertus Magnus College
The Academic Procession
Theunusual and colorful attire worn by the graduates, faculty and officers of the University on the occasion of the Commencement Exercises has historic roots in the distant medieval past Dressed as they are in cap and gown, the graduates and their professors form a part of a long tradition, which dates back to the universities of Paris and Bologna, Oxford and Cambridge, in the days of their Catholic glory
The precise origins of the several parts of the academic garb are not easy to discover . However, since the medieval students enjoyed the status of clerics during their university years, one may assume that their attire found its inspiration in the clerical dress of medieval times The gown seems to be an adaptation of the robe worn by friar or priest; the hood resembles the monk’s or friar’s cowl; and the mortarboard cap of today, the end product of a curious evolution, recalls the skull cap of days when tonsured heads needed protection against drafts in medieval classrooms
Academic attire began to appear quite generally on United States campuses in the late 1890s Since that time, its use has become universal for solemn academic functions, and its pattern highly uniform
The Gown. The gowns are three in number and styling That of the associate and bachelor is a yoked, closed-front garment with long, pointed sleeves; that of the master has sleeves long and closed, but slit just above the elbow to allow the forearms to protrude; the gown of the doctor has full, bell-shaped sleeves Only the doctor’s gown is trimmed with velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on each sleeve
Though black velvet is proper trimming for all doctoral gowns, the color of the panels and sleeve bars may vary according to the faculty which granted the wearer’s degree .
The Hood. The hood at first seems to have been worn over the head and was attached to the gown When the skull cap was introduced, the hood was retained and worn separately much as it is today Each degree (master and doctor) has its special hood, which varies in length and, in the case of the doctor, also in pattern .
The color or colors in the lining of the hood are those of the college or university which granted the wearer’s degree For example, Rockhurst University is known by the blue chevron on the field of white The colored velvet binding or edging of the hood, in different widths for master and doctor, indicates the faculty granting the degree
The Cap. The mortarboard has become the universally accepted style in United States colleges and universities Many European institutions still retain distinctive forms of academic headdress
The doctor, following graduation, has the right to wear a gold tassel on the mortarboard; black, however, is precisely proper and perhaps more common Black is the common color for master’s, bachelor’s and associate degrees
The Tam. The tam is a velvet garment that comes in either four-, six- or eight-sided designs Tams are complemented by either a detachable strand tassel, fixed gold metallic or fixed bullion tassel Traditionally, tams are worn by faculty with doctoral degrees to show differentiation between themselves and students
The order of the procession also is dictated by tradition At Rockhurst, faculty process by rank (professor, associate professor, assistant professor, instructor) in order of seniority, followed by University administrators
