Stephen Schneck, Ph.D.
Stephen Schneck, Ph D , received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Rockhurst University in Political Science and Philosophy and a Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy from the Department of Government at Notre Dame .
At The Catholic University of America in Washington, D .C ., Schneck served for many years as a professor, department chair and dean . His academic books and articles range in topic from political philosophy to public policy . Previously, Schneck was the founder and Director of the Institute for Policy Research & Catholic Studies at The Catholic University of America, in Washington, D .C . A frequent media source for queries about Catholicism and contemporary public issues, he has offered commentary for most national print, radio, television, and online news sources He writes regularly for the Catholic and religious media While at Catholic University, Schneck received many awards for teaching and research
A national Catholic advocate for social justice, Schneck was appointed in 2022 to the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom . He was unanimously elected to serve as Chair of this bi-partisan commission in 2024 . He also serves on the governing boards for Catholics for the Future, Catholic Climate Covenant, and for Catholic Mobilizing Network . From 2018-2020, Schneck was the Executive Director of Franciscan Action Network, a national organization promoting environmental, economic and social justice for the Franciscan communities of the United States . In 2015, Schneck was appointed to the White House Advisory Council for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships
Born and raised in Iowa, Schneck now lives with his wife in Washington, D C
The Academic Procession
The unusual and colorful attire worn by the graduates, faculty and officers of the University on the occasion of the Commencement Exercises has historic roots in the distant medieval past . Dressed as they are in cap and gown, the graduates and their professors form a part of a long tradition, which dates back to the universities of Paris and Bologna, Oxford and Cambridge, in the days of their Catholic glory
The precise origins of the several parts of the academic garb are not easy to discover . However, since the medieval students enjoyed the status of clerics during their university years, one may assume that their attire found its inspiration in the clerical dress of medieval times . The gown seems to be an adaptation of the robe worn by friar or priest; the hood resembles the monk’s or friar’s cowl; and the mortarboard cap of today, the end product of a curious evolution, recalls the skull cap of days when tonsured heads needed protection against drafts in medieval classrooms .
Academic attire began to appear quite generally on United States campuses in the late 1890s . Since that time, its use has become universal for solemn academic functions, and its pattern highly uniform
The Gown. The gowns are three in number and styling . That of the associate and bachelor is a yoked, closed-front garment with long, pointed sleeves; that of the master has sleeves long and closed, but slit just above the elbow to allow the forearms to protrude; the gown of the doctor has full, bell-shaped sleeves . Only the doctor’s gown is trimmed with velvet panels down the front and three velvet bars on each sleeve
Though black velvet is proper trimming for all doctoral gowns, the color of the panels and sleeve bars may vary according to the faculty which granted the wearer’s degree .
The Hood. The hood at first seems to have been worn over the head and was attached to the
gown . When the skull cap was introduced, the hood was retained and worn separately much as it is today Each degree (master and doctor) has its special hood, which varies in length and, in the case of the doctor, also in pattern .
The color or colors in the lining of the hood are those of the college or university which granted the wearer’s degree . For example, Rockhurst University is known by the blue chevron on the field of white . The colored velvet binding or edging of the hood, in different widths for master and doctor, indicates the faculty granting the degree .
The Cap. The mortarboard has become the universally accepted style in United States colleges and universities . Many European institutions still retain distinctive forms of academic headdress .
The doctor, following graduation, has the right to wear a gold tassel on the mortarboard; black, however, is precisely proper and perhaps more common . Black is the common color for master’s, bachelor’s and associate degrees .
The Tam. The tam is a velvet garment that comes in either four-, six- or eight-sided designs . Tams are complemented by either a detachable strand tassel, fixed gold metallic or fixed bullion tassel . Traditionally, tams are worn by faculty with doctoral degrees to show differentiation between themselves and students .
The order of the procession also is dictated by tradition . At Rockhurst, faculty process by rank (professor, associate professor, assistant professor, instructor) in order of seniority, followed by University administrators

Taylor Garber
Taylor Garber served as the clinical contract coordinator in the Saint Luke’s College of Nursing and Health Sciences and a student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts in English degree . She passed away unexpectedly in July 2024 Taylor was a beloved member of the Rockhurst University community and is remembered for her warm, infectious personality .
Barbara Ludwig
Barbara Ludwig, Ed .D ., director of graduate nursing programs and assistant professor of nursing, passed away in December 2024, following a battle with cancer . She was a cherished colleague and respected teacher who shared her love, enthusiasm and strong work ethic with others pursuing the vocation of nursing
Darrick Martin
Officer Darrick Martin was a longtime member of the Rockhurst Security Department . He passed away in September 2024 . He was considered one of the pillars of the department, bringing a calm demeanor, sense of humor and a deep knowledge of the community to his work He will be remembered for the care with which he approached service to Rockhurst University students, staff, faculty and neighbors .
