Wesampledthecocktailpairing(£40)andthewine flight(£30)whichwasfuntotry,andourwaitresswas veryknowledgeableaboutthewinesparticularly,butin truth,nexttimewe’dgofortheaperitiffollowedbya nicebottleofwine.Onthesubjectofstaff,everyonewe metseemedhappytobetherefromthelovelymanager, Dantothepersonthattookourcoats.Itwasinfectious. TherestaurantwaspackedwhichonaWednesday nightdoesn’thappenmuchinBirminghamrightnow. Autumnisaseasonofpreparationasmuchasitis ofcolourandbeauty,andthejobsyoudonowwillset youupperfectlyforthemonthsahead.Ihavepulled togethersomeofmytoptipsforOctober,amixtureof tidying,plantingandprotecting,thatwillrewardyou handsomelyoncespringarrives.
Collectthosefallenleaves
OneoftheunmistakablesightsofOctoberisthe carpetoffallenleavesacrosslawnsandpaths.Aslovely astheylookatfirst,theycanquicklyturnintoasoggy, slipperynuisanceiftheyareleftwheretheyfall.Onthe lawninparticular,theyblockoutlightandair, encouragingmossandbarepatches.Aweeklyrakeor
leafblowermakeslightworkofthejob,andwhileit mightseemlikeachore,thegoodnewsisthatthe leavesareincrediblyusefuloncecollected.
