Frompostgirltodesignerandevery departmentinbetween,PoppyEldergot undertheskinofherfamily’smetalcasting andjewellerybusinesswhereshedevelopedaunique understandingandappreciationoftheindustry.Now, withallherknowledgeandexperience,Poppyis creatingmeaningful,timelesspiecesfromherstudio inSuttonColdfield.
IntheFifties,Poppy’sgrandparentsopeneda metalcastingbusinessintheJewelleryQuarter whichbecameoneofEurope’slargestindependent jewellerymanufacturers.Poppywasinvolvedfrom anearlyageworkingintheschoolholidaysforabit ofpocketmoneyandwhendecisionsaboutuniversity werebeingmade,shechosetofollowherfamilyinto jewellerymakinginstead.Inadditiontothefactory, thefamilyhadashopintheJewelleryQuarterwhere Poppyworkedsothatshecouldlearntheretailside ofthebusiness.Whatwasmeanttobea12-month stintintheshopturnedintoadecade.
Poppy’smumanduncleareintheprocessof retiringandexploredsellingthebusinessbefore settlingonanemployeeownershipschemeinorder toprotecttheirloyalworkforce.Whiletheyhad plentyofinterestfrompeoplelookingtobuythe business,Poppy’smumandunclewereworriedthey werelookingtomakeaquickbuckasset-stripping thefactorywhichobviouslytheywerekeentoavoid. Poppysays:“TheMDhadbeentherefordonkeys yearsandlotsofpeoplehadworkedtherefor decades,soitwouldhavebeenheartbreaking.There wouldhavebeenahundredjobslostpotentially, whichiswhytheystartedtheemployeeownership scheme.”
WiththewealthofexperienceunderPoppy’sbelt, goingitalonewasn’tdaunting,andshequickly foundherownuniquestylepreferringtocreate timelesspiecesratherthanfollowingfickletrends. There’salotofemotioninvolvedinthedesign process.Sheexplains:“Nobody’sbuyingfine jewelleryforthesakeofit.Itmightbeawedding,an anniversaryoraspecialbirthday.Therearegenerally alotofemotions.”Thisismostevidentwith engagementringswhenPoppydoesalotofhand holdingthroughthedesignprocess.Somepeople cometoseePoppywithverysetideasthatmight needmanaging.
Sheexplains:“It’sabigdecisionandtherearealot ofhatstowear.Somepeoplewantwhitegoldbut don’trealisethattheshinywhitefinishmightwear offintimeandneedworkfurtherdowntheline. Platinumdoesn’trequirethat.Also,thecostofgold fluctuatesbecausewhenthere’sinstabilityinthe worldpeopleinvestingold.It’scurrentlymore expensivethanplatinumandmorehigh maintenance,soplatinumisabetteroption.” Sometimespeoplewantthestonetobeasbigas possible,otherswantittobeasperfectaspossible. There’sgenerallyabudget,soPoppysaysthere’sa finebalancetostrike.Shesays:“There’salsothe
