Students and staff from RGS Primary and Secondary entertained guests at the annual RGS Carols in the Frame in November. From mini strings, to choral performances, and brave solo performers it was a wonderful community evening.

Guests were also thrilled to see a visit from Santa!

All proceeds raised from this year’s Carols in the Frame supporting the following charities – You Choose, Soldier On, and the Salvation Army. Thank you to all the RGS staff and students, including the Year 11 students who hosted Carols, who assisted in organising the event.

Inside The many facets of leadership As I reflect on the stories shared in this edition of Capricornus Quarterly, I am struck by the many ways leadership is lived, learned, and expressed across our school. In classrooms and House meetings, on sporting fields, in cultural pursuits, through service, and in the quiet moments of personal growth – leadership is woven into the fabric of daily life at The Rockhampton Grammar School.

At RGS, leadership is not confined to a position, badge, or title. Instead, it is a quality developed intentionally in every student. It is demonstrated through character, courage, integrity, and the willingness to contribute to something greater than oneself. This edition showcases that leadership beautifully – through our newly announced School Captains and Vice Captains for 2026, the reflective and inspiring journeys of our Year 6 leaders, the initiatives driven by our co-curricular programmes, and the personal stories of students who have pursued opportunities that stretch their understanding of themselves and the world around them.

Central to this school-wide culture is our Leadership for All programme, a commitment that every student can learn to lead and that leadership is best developed over time, through practice, guidance, and real responsibility. Whether in Primary, where students explore what it means to serve their peers and community, or in Secondary, where formal leadership roles sit alongside informal moments of influence, encouragement, and example – the programme ensures that leadership is accessible to every Grammarian.

We believe that leadership development is not an optional extra. It is essential in preparing young people to navigate an increasingly complex world with resilience, empathy, and purpose. Our students learn that leadership requires listening as much as speaking, serving as much as directing, and striving for excellence while supporting the success of others.

I hope this edition leaves you as inspired as I am by the strength, diversity, and potential of the young leaders in our care. Their stories reflect our School’s motto – Macte Virtute et Litteris – Grow in Character and Scholarship. It is a privilege to watch them do exactly that, each in their own way, every day.

Speech Day: Topping the class Inspired by a supportive learning environment and driven by a love of learning and dedication, Year 12 student Daniel Spiryagin was named the Internal Dux of the School and Ezriela Sidharta announced Dux of Primary, at this year’s RGS Speech Day ceremonies.

Year 12 student Daniel Spiryagin and Year 6 student Ezriela Sidharta were both shocked and honoured to receive their Dux awards at their respective Secondary and Primary Speech Day events.

“I’m particularly looking forward to continuing my passion for robotics by joining university competition teams. Long-term, I hope to pursue a career that allows me to bring my ideas to life, such as founding a startup,’’ Daniel said.

Daniel said he set high academic goals for himself this year, and this award was a validation of his own diligent efforts, but equally a testament to the support he received from his teachers, peers, and parents.

Ezriela Sidharta said it was “crazy” when she found out she was Dux of Primary.

“Above all else, my priority this year was to take every opportunity and enjoy the journey whilst making lasting memories. This award feels like a wonderful recognition of the success of balancing academic excellence with participating in co-curricular and having fun with friends,’’ Daniel said.

Daniel, who said his favourite subject was Specialist Mathematics due to the challenge of complex problems and applying his learnings to robotics, said his academic success was fuelled by a genuine passion for learning and curiosity.

“Ultimately, my curiosity inspired me to take initiative in my studies, while the dedication displayed by my family and peers gave me the discipline needed to push through more tedious work.”

In 2026, Daniel aims to move to Brisbane to study a Bachelor and Master of Engineering at the University of Queensland.

“I always went into the Primary office and saw the names of the previous dux recipients and one day hoped my name would be up there one day.

This is so cool,’’ Ezriela said.

Arriving in RGS in Year 1, Ezriela still remains grateful to all her teachers – Mrs Scarpelli, Mr James Hunt, Mr Libke, Mrs Ruddick, and her Year 6 teacher Mr Rooks.

“Mr Rooks really helped me reach my full capacity in Year 6 and I was so happy to have him for my last year in Primary,’’ Ezriela said.

Ezriela, who said maths was her favourite subject, also thanked Mr Bartley for his assistance in both maths and writing extension lessons – always encouraging the students to keep trying to be the best they could.

This same support came from Ezriela’s family.

“My mum always reminds me to keep working hard and she’s happy as long as I’ve done my best. That’s my advice for other students – always try your best and don’t ever say you can’t do anything,’’ Ezriela said.

The next chapter awaits RGS Year 12 graduates have received their ATAR results and are now making plans for the next phase of life’s journey. For some, that means continued studies at university, while for others it’s joining the workforce or taking a gap year embarking on different journey. The Capricornus Quarterly met with some of the Year 12 cohort to discover more about their next steps.

RGS once again showed why it ranks among the strongest-performing schools with 100% of this year’s 155 graduates gaining a Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).

This certificate is their passport to further education, training and employment.

Additionally, 80% of all general subject results were either an A or a B, and no student achieved below a C in any general subject result.

The School’s ATAR results were again strong with 4.3% receiving an ATAR above 99. 9.7% receiving a 98+ ATAR result and 37.63% receiving a 90+ ATAR. Overall, 91.40% achieved an ATAR of 70+.

RGS Headmaster Dr Phillip Moulds said the School was proud of the Year 12 cohort for their ATAR results and the commitment they demonstrated throughout their Senior years.

“While ATARs are an important measure for some pathways, they are not the destination for every student. I am also very proud of the achievements of our VET students and more importantly of the type of people the young women and men of the class of 2025 have become” Dr Moulds said.

“Our graduates are pursuing a wide range of futures - from university study to apprenticeships and traineeships, entering the workforce, or travelling and gaining valuable life experience.”

Year 12 graduate Anabel Morrison received a 99.35 ATAR. She hopes to study medicine at James Cook University in Townsville.

“Talking to family and friends who work in the industry, and doing work experience, it’s been cool to see what it’s like,’’ Anabel said.

taking a gap year, I decided that a gap year would be the most beneficial option for my personal growth,’’ Isabella said.

Anabel said Grammar was like her second family.

“I plan to move to the English countryside to live with my family, where I hope to gain greater independence and life experience. I intend to work in hospitality, which will allow me to develop valuable skills while also supporting my plans to travel and immerse myself in different cultures. I’m excited to see where the year takes me.”

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here which makes it bittersweet. It’s a great community which was a big support in Year 12,’’ Anabel said.

RGS Most Outstanding Vocational Education student for 2025 was Charlie Donoghue.

Charlie completed a Certificate III in Agriculture, Certificate II in Engineering, Certificate II in Automotive, Certificate I in Construction, and Certificate I in Active Volunteering.

“I really enjoyed the practical side of things with the different certificate courses,’’ Charlie said.

In 2026, Charlie is planning a gap year, working on his family property in the Bauhinia Downs district.

It’s part of his six-year plan.

“After working at home I’m looking at a fouryear heavy diesel apprenticeship and I’ve been offered some work on a grain farming property in Western Australia. I’m hoping to do that after completing an apprenticeship,’’ Charlie said.

Fellow Year 12 graduate Isabella Lloyd has always had a strong desire to travel and is heading to the United Kingdom for a gap year.

“After considerable reflection and weighing up the choice between starting university or

Isabella said she was not placing a strict time frame on her gap year, remaining open to opportunities as they arise.

“I am deferring my place in the double degree of Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Communications at QUT. I’m confident this gap year will allow me to return to university with greater clarity and continued motivation for the study ahead,’’ she said.

The School’s 2025 External Dux recipient will be announced at the Foundation Day and Induction of School Officers Ceremony in Duggan Hall in Term 1.

Award winning Citizen Science RGS Head of Library Dr Helen Weston is discovering a new world of learning in the RGS Library. Dr Weston, the winner of this year’s 30th Queensland Library Achiever of the Year Award, has led pioneering work in establishing “Citizen Science Corners” in school libraries Dr Weston, the Convenor of Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) Schools, said she implemented Citizen Science Corners in school libraries because she wanted to introduce a STEM programme that wasn’t a traditional Maker Space which is often a program hosted in school libraries.

“This year RGS students have taken part in the iNaturalist project where students submitted photos of flora and fauna they have seen and became curious about. A scientist or expert in the field then identifies their critter or plant,’’ Dr Weston said.

The RGS Year 1 cohort participated in The Great Reef Census where they worked to identify coral images taken with AI empowered imaging.

“This is the first time I have worked with students so young, but they took on the role with great pride and focus and identified 179 images between the four classes. The Year 1s worked on their science literacy and ICT skills as well,’’ Dr Weston said.

“Many students found real engagement with science in this form and considered opportunities for science in their future careers as a result.”

“Scientific research conducted worldwide relies on the help of the average citizen to assist with data collection,’’ Dr Weston said.

Dr Weston said the RGS Library team already has their “thinking hats” on to choose some exciting and important projects to introduce to RGS in 2026.

“There is a synergy between school libraries and Citizen Science. Like libraries, Citizen Science is committed to making information available in all shapes and forms, it engages students by connecting them through information sharing and knowledge creation.

Citizen Science in school libraries evolved following a meeting with scientist Dr Bridie Schultz and introduction to the Citizen Science movement.

The Citizen Science Corner concept, created in 2023, has since grown and developed.

A notable meeting: Research comes to life

Harley Needham never imagined he would one day meet his Day of Notables character.

When leading Australian businessman Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest AO discovered Harley Needham selected him as his RGS Year 6 Day of Notables character for 2025, he had to meet the young man.

Arriving at RGS in Year 6, Harley was soon to discover he would be a part of a public speaking competition at the School called the Day of Notables - an event that celebrates its 30th year in 2026.

Each year, the RGS Year 6 students create a short list of “notable” characters before finalising their character and testing their public speaking skills when they present their character, both to their class and later on the cohort’s Day of Notables presentation in front of School House.

“I wanted to choose someone who had grown up on a cattle property, like I have, and also because Mr Forrest is building a wind farm on part of our property,’’ Harley said.

Harley’s family is a host family of Squadron Energy’s Clarke Creek Wind Farm, which opened in October 2025.

Little did Harley know, but his Term 3 ‘Day of Notables’ assignment would inspire a chance meeting with Andrew Forrest when he arrived to mark the wind farm’s opening.

“He was very easy to talk to, kind, and friendly.

He was also very generous – he gifted my brother Jensen and I a pair of handmade RM Williams boots,’’ Harley said.

Harley’s mum Kylie told the Squadron Energy team about the Day of Notables event, Harley’s first ever attempt at public speaking at RGS and the meeting was arranged.

“He asked me why I chose him, and he said he was super proud that such a fine young man like myself had done so. He hoped it wasn’t boring – but it really wasn’t! He also told me to work hard at school but to remember to always have fun!”

Harley said it was “really great” meeting Andrew Forrest in person.

Harley said one of the interesting facts he discovered during his research on Andrew Forrest was that he worked hard to eventually buy his family’s cattle property back, and that he has pledged to give away half of his wealth by signing The Giving Pledge.

The Giving Pledge is a promise by the world’s wealthiest philanthropists to give the majority of their wealth to charitable causes in their lifetime or wills.

Michael Hoy (RGS 2001) is pictured with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, following his appointment as Australia’s High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam in December 2024.

Since relocating with his family in early 2025, Michael has embraced a busy and rewarding first year, working closely with the team at the Australian High Commission and exploring the rich culture and landscapes of Brunei.

The RGS Alumni welcomed the RGS graduating Class of 2025 into the School’s long legacy of alumni.

The Year 12 students farewelled their RGS school days at the Valedictory Dinner, held in Duggan Hall, on Friday 21 November. The evening, surrounded by family and friends, was a tribute to the students dedication, resilience, and achievements during their school days. The School wishes the graduating students all the best for the next chapter of their life and welcomes them to the RGS alumni family.

Generations Breakfast: Wednesday 11 February – Held on Foundation Day to celebrate generations of RGS families.

Distinguished RGS Alumni Awards: Saturday 22 August – Nominations are now open for the Distinguished Alumni Awards, closing 3 February 2026. The dinner is held in the Memorial Assembly Hall.

Reunion Weekend: Saturday 2 May – We will welcome back to RGS the ‘6s’ for their milestone reunions, and Class of 2001 for their 25-year celebration (after COVID postponed their 20 year reunion plans). We can’t wait to see you!

Nigel Burnett (RGS 1995)

My story In 1981 Nigel’s parents drew an undeveloped farm in the Emerald Irrigation Area ballot and pioneered and developed it into an irrigation farm from which they grew their first crop of cotton in 1984. It was a decision that shaped Nigel’s future – both at the grassroots of the cotton industry and at the board level with Cotton Australia.

As you reflect on your four-year tenure as Cotton Australia Board Chair, what did you gain from that experience?

“I found my time on the Cotton Australia (CA) Board particularly rewarding. CA is a highly motivated organisation that works tirelessly to advocate on behalf of cotton farmers and industry. Through my time on the Board I forged a strong network at an industry, political, and international supply chain level collaborating with global brands and retailers in the sustainability space. As Chair, I was able to better understand and articulate the Australian cotton industry’s significant sustainability credentials, building on the reputation of one of the world’s highest yielding, highest quality and most sustainable cotton industries. My Board and Chair experience with CA also enabled me to build my skill set in terms of governance, advocacy and leadership, helping me to make a positive and meaningful contribution to the future of the industry.”

What were some of the key achievements and challenges during that time?

“Over the past 10 years globally we have seen many organisations start to focus on sustainability, in particular ensuring organisational alignment with environmental and social governance frameworks. Brands and retailers are requiring assurance and evidence that they are sourcing raw materials from supply chains that are operating ethically and sustainably. Key markets in places like Europe are passing environmental and social sustainability legislation that will exclude participation in these markets if you can’t demonstrate and prove that your cotton is produced sustainably. About three years ago CA launched a Strategic Roadmap process to address the key strategic issues of

traceability, data, certification, human rights and the marketing/promotion of Australian cotton advancements in these key areas. It was very rewarding to chair that process and see it through to a stage of resourcing and actioning key recommendations. This will set up Australian cotton growers to continue to operate at the highest level and be the preferred fibre of choice for our customers.”

What motivated you to go from being a “grassroots” cotton grower to industry advocate?

“I heard a saying early on in my farming career that “if you’re not at the table then you are probably on the menu.” Although I had a laugh at it at the time it really does speak to how important being part of the conversation is to provide context, lived experience and ground truthing of an issue is to finding the best outcome for your community. My advocacy pathway was relatively quick through to the CA Board due mainly to getting involved with local and regional advocacy groups, building a strong knowledge base on issues and being prepared to stand up and have a voice.

One of the most important responsibilities in leadership is to encourage participation, build confidence and courage in young leaders and tap them on the shoulder when we see opportunities to progress their leadership journey. I was fortunate to have mentors and industry leaders who tapped me on the shoulder and gave me the confidence to have a go.”

How did your journey in the cotton industry begin?

“I was fortunate to grow up in a cotton growing family and after returning from University in 2000, studying Rural Science at UNE, I leased some country from my mother, and Beth and I planted and grew our first cotton crop in 2004.

Growing up on the farm and farming cotton for the last 21 years has allowed me to witness

and be part of significant change in the cotton industry. During my teenage years, while I was studying at RGS, the Australian cotton industry faced a serious challenge in that it was losing the fight against its main insect pest heliothis.

Fortunately through significant investment in research and practice change, the industry has transformed into the most sustainable cotton industry in the world. To grow a bale of cotton today compared to 1997 we use 97% less pesticides, 56% less water and 35% less land.”

What’s next for you after stepping down from the board?

“After 12 years on the CA Board I am looking forward to spending more time with my family and within our own ag business at Emerald and Springsure. I am particularly excited about navigating and growing our farming enterprise as the economic and social landscape in which we operate rapidly evolves. I am also still keen to stay involved within ag advocacy continuing to contribute whether it is in a mentoring capacity or being involved within our local organisations.”

Any words for the next generations of cotton growers?

“Much of the industry’s success over the past 30 years has been built off a growth mindset and commitment to practice change by growers in order to survive and thrive. This has drawn some of the best young minds to the industry and aided and enabled an important generational transition. The cotton industry invests heavily in leadership and development, particularly its flagship programme Australian Future Cotton Leaders, of which I was a participant in its inaugural programme in 2008.

It is such an exciting and rewarding industry to be part of with abundant opportunities and pathways to advance your personal development and career whilst being part of something bigger, producing the worlds best natural fibre – Australian Cotton.”

“I am from Emerald and have grown up on a cotton farm with my Mum, Dad and little brother. I am a fourth generation boarder at RGS and have been attending the School since Year 10. The past two years have been a really positive chapter of my life; the experience has filled me with absolute pride and gratitude to attend this wonderful school. The exceptional range of opportunities, support along with the positive School culture and connection has really widened my capacity as a student and allowed me to create long lasting friendships.

“My family comes from a small mining town called Middlemount, but we are currently living in Gracemere where my father Mathew runs his handyman business along with my mother Jackie. I have an older brother Max, who graduated from RGS in 2024, and a younger brother Jay, who started at RGS in 2025 in Year 5.

I have attended RGS since Term 4 of Year 8 in 2022.

“I’m from Macau, a small city in China, where my parents and my two younger siblings still live. Growing up as the oldest has played a big part in shaping my sense of responsibility and independence. I have been a boarder at RGS since Term 4 of Year 10.

“The place I call home is Gladstone.

I am one of seven children, with four older siblings and two younger siblings. I started my journey at Grammar at the start of 2025 as a boarder, and since then I have realised what it truly means to be a student at RGS. It means whether you’re in class, on the field, or even just out in public, everything you do while representing the Red and Black you do it with everything you have. You shoot for the moon and even if you miss you’ll be amongst the stars.

As School Captain for 2026, I’m looking forward to emphasising the big community that Grammar already has by strengthening inclusiveness to ensure everyone can have a great year and unite to reach their full potential.

We all thrive off encouragement and optimism that leads us to succeed in all facets of the school. I am hoping to build on this for the 2026 journey.

Both my parents are significant mentors in my life. They have demonstrated leadership characteristics such as respect, integrity, and the importance of a strong work ethic. I have always strived to set ambitious goals and work hard in my endeavours to achieve them.

It feels really rewarding to make my parents proud because I have always admired how hard they have worked to provide me with opportunities in life such as attending this School.

My advice to others is make the most of every opportunity. We never want to look back wondering what we could have achieved. Don’t fear the missteps, they are the stepping stones. Embrace failure, it builds discipline and brings you one step closer to who you want to become.”

I feel so privileged being a student at RGS. Coming from a small town like Middlemount, the opportunities that this School has provided, and will continue to provide, makes me feel privileged every day to attend here.

As School Captain I hope to achieve a greater school spirit and inclusivity and forming new relationships with as many people as I can across all cohorts. I also hope to help in bringing the energy to co-curricular events.

Someone who has helped me grow my leadership aspirations is my mother. She has helped me with all my self-doubts and getting out of my comfort zone, especially when applying for the role of RGS School Captain.

Heading into my final year of school, some advice I have for fellow students at RGS, specifically those going into Year 11, is to stay on top of your work. Procrastination can be fun in the moment but the stress it causes later is simply not worth it.”

Being a student here has meant having the chance to start fresh, discover new opportunities, and learn more about who I want to become. In 2026, as a Vice Captain, I hope to be someone who is approachable, supportive and willing to work hard to bring positive, meaningful change to the School community.

My parents have been the greatest influence on my leadership journey, because they have always encouraged me to push beyond my limits and have shown, through their sacrifices and their strength, what genuine leadership looks like.

As I enter my final year of Secondary School, the advice I would offer other students at RGS is to slow down every now and then and take everything in. The years pass by quickly, and it matters to enjoy the moments while they are happening, so that when you look back, you have memories that truly reflect your time at school.”

For 2026 I want to see everyone try new things, get out of their comfort zones, talk to new people. I want to see every student grow stronger and grow together. Throughout my schooling I’ve been lucky enough to have a strong support system and some of the best supporters I’ve ever had are Mr Calvin Bennett and my parents. Both my parents and Mr Bennett have always backed me and helped me stay on track in life. I truly believe that without these people I wouldn’t have felt inclined to lead but I do believe I wouldn’t be half the person I am today without their support.

In 2026, I want to offer some advice to the younger students. Never let that spark go out. I’m talking about that thing that you have always loved, whether that be sport, art, academics – no matter what it is – always keep that spark going. It will get hard, believe me, but that’s the time where you push yourself. You go kick the ball, make the art piece, play that new number on your instrument, do that practice exam. But most of all, never forget how far you have come. You’ll never be here again and you’ve never been here before, so don’t take it too seriously, have fun and make the most of everything.”

RGS Year 6 students were leading by example throughout the 2025 school year.

Student Leadership: A quality within At RGS, we believe that everyone can lead and that leadership potential is inherent in all students. RGS Primary aims to provide many diverse opportunities for Year 6 students to learn and practice leadership understanding and skills.

RGS Primary staff worked alongside Year 6 students throughout the year learning about what an effective leader is while also providing opportunities to demonstrate leadership.

Cultural Leadership (Art Club Assistance and Music Club Assistance); and Environmental Leadership (Garden Club Assistance and Recycling Club Assistance).

RGS Year 6 teacher Mr Jason Rooks reflected on a positive learning journey, for both students and staff.

Students assisted with the various responsibilities once a week over the course of a term, learning valuable leadership lessons along the way – including the value of serving others, responsibility, resilience, care and consideration, and conflict resolution skills.

“It has been extremely rewarding to witness the leadership journey of the Year 6 students over the course of the year and we wish them well as they continue on their transition into Secondary School, and beyond,’’ Mr Rooks said.

Each Year 6 student had opportunities to nominate for a range of positions, including – Student Leader; House Captain; community Leadership (Before School Reading Assistance); Engagement Leadership (Handball Referee, Prep Fort Duty Assistance, Oval Duty Assistance and Duggan Hall Duty Assistance);

Mr Rooks said the students also met with Primary Leadership Representatives and some teachers to reflect on their roles and ways to improve the process for future Year 6 leaders.

Last Semester, Year 5 students started exploring leadership with RGS Deputy Head of Primary (Students and Operations) Mrs Alicia Odewahn and what it means to be a leader at RGS, creating their own co-constructed statement of leadership for 2026.

Learning Journey: Discoveries in Canberra Year 6 students ventured to the nation’s capital at the start of Term 4. It was a trip that not only provided a wealth of learning about different facets of Australia, but also a journey of self-discovery and stepping out of your comfort zone.

“What I loved about camp was being in the heart of the Australian Parliamentary system. Diving into historic political events was amazing and going to places such as Parliament House, learning about The Dismissal in the place where it happened (Old Parliament House) was quite the event. Learning about how Canberra was designed, and the National Triangle was the best experience. I loved this learning – it was in-depth and related to the real world. This camp helped me grow by making me go with the flow. Before the camp I needed to know what was going to happen and when. During camp, I learnt that I had to go with the flow and be surprised. I now feel like it’s easier to just chill and let the schedule take care of itself.

This has helped me to calm down when we’re running late.”

“There being so many interesting and enjoyable things to do during the Canberra Trip. I really enjoyed about camp was the Deep Space Communication Centre. As soon as we stepped inside there was immediately an array of fascinating references to different space trips around the world, particularly in NASA and Australian-made space products. We discovered more about moon rocks to rocketship food and the Apollo 11’s journey to the moon. On camp, we learnt a lot about responsibility and looking out for one another as well as how to properly take care of our environment without our parents to do it for us. We all had to pay extra attention to each other to make sure we were all comfortable and that everyone had a say in what went on inside the cabin walls, which taught us about social awareness.”

“I liked Parliament House because I loved learning about the history of Australia and learning about the past. Seeing the Magna Carta was also really interesting. This trip helped me grow because I learnt a lot about Australia, which makes me more proud to be Australian.

“Questacon was my favourite place to visit. It was fun and I enjoyed how people could play together and learn about Science, and do a lot of experiments. All of the activities were great and everyone was included. The trip helped me grow because of the connection with other people and working with other people who I don’t usually work with. Students grow ag tech interest RGS students Lalita Roopnarinesingh and Ella Holcombe are successfully immersing themselves in the world of AgTech. Lalita, Year 12, and Ella, Year 9, attended a Gatton AgTech Showcase, through the Grow Her: Advancing Young Female Founders programme during Term 4 where they were exposed to industry leaders and cutting-edge technology.

Teams of female high school students competed at regional events in Rockhampton, Townsville and Toowoomba, working with mentors to develop and pitch an innovative Ag-tech solution to a real-life problem. The RGS team was then invited to attend the Gatton event with other regional finalists.

Lalita and Ella joined fellow agriculture enthusiasts, and regional winners, from Nambour State College, St Joseph’s School Stanthorpe, and Columba Catholic College in Charters Towers.

Lalita said over the two-day Gatton AgTech Showcase, they looked at the various machinery and “cool” inventions being created for the agriculture sector.

Among the innovative industry leaders was current RGS parent, and RGS alumni, Andrew Bate (RGS 1995) from the Gindie district who is taking his SwamFarm Robotics invention around the world.

Lalita said she had never thought about a career in agriculture until she chose Agriculture as a Year 8 elective subject.

“I thought, wow, I’m really interested in this,’’ Lalita said.

“Most of the people in my family are doctors, accountants, and lawyers. It was different and it was good.”

Lalita is currently interested in the cattle industry, and the technology behind it, and is next looking at gaining more hands-on experience in the industry after school.

“I’m planning on taking a gap year and joining a programme called AgCAREERSTART to get the hands-on experience I don’t currently have and then I hope to study at the University of Queensland, Gatton, the following year,’’ Lalita said.

“Going to the Gatton AgTech Showcase definitely exposed me to a different side of ag I didn’t know about. There’s so much tecnholgoy and so many new things happening in the agriculture industry. It’s really interesting.”

Ella, from a cattle property near Moura, said she wanted to do GrowHer because it was ag-based programme designed specifically

for young girls with an interest in ag, which is something she been interested in since she was a little.

“I learned that there is so much more to ag than what most people realise, there’s the people behind the scenes that create new technologies for the farmers to use, not just the farmers, there’s also the people who assist the farmers in what’s best for their properties, stock and crops,’’ Ella said.

Ella said after completing school she has always planned on going into the agricultural sector, specifically into the cattle industry, like she has grown up with – trading wearners and working with cattle – but is aware of the evolving industry with new technology.

Learning from shared stories RGS Year 12 student Kathleen Nguyen has a passion for discovering the unknown about communities and immersing herself in a world of new possibilities. The Aotearoa Tour, a United Nations Youth Australia international trip to New Zealand to explore indigenous reconciliation, provided another platform for Kathleen to immerse herself in community and culture.

Kathleen was selected as an Australian delegate, starting the learning journey in Sydney discovering more about Australia’s First Nations people and New Zealand’s Maori people.

In a “full on” lead-up to the trip, Kathleen immersed herself learning more about the two First Nations cultures, media training, and consultation training.

Joining 12 delegates from across Australia, many from a First Nations background, the group met with Latoya Aroha Rule, a prominent figure and fierce advocate who spoke to us about spit-hoods and the ongoing fight for justice.

Kathleen said the trip created a desire for her to know more.

“For me personally, you can’t say fully you know something or have an opinion on something unless you actually go out and talk to people involved and experience it yourself.

Involve yourself,’’ Kathleen said.

“There’s only so much that the books and internet can teach you. The rest comes from the people; from their stories, their land, and their courage to keep going.”

“ Something at the forefront of my mind throughout the trip was how can we, as young people, and as a community, carry these lessons forward.”

“Hearing her story reminded me that sometimes it’s about winning the right defeats.

No success story is a complete and linear win from the start. Sometimes a small defeat can be the catalyst to a great win,’’ Kathleen said.

“I went into this opportunity with an open mind, not sure what to expect. I just knew I was ready to immerse myself in whatever came my way.”

Arriving in Aotearoa, the Australian delegates met the Tuhourangi Ngati Wahiao peoples of Whakarewarewa, who showed them how they utilise, protect, and honour their land and culture, cooking the Australian visitors delicious food in their ovens powered by the geothermal activity, as well as demonstrating how they maintain their partnerships with the Council and Government.

In Wellington, the delegates visited the Waitangi Tribunal, learning about the 1840 Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the way it guides New Zealand’s partnerships between Maori and the Crown – meeting “inspirational” figures like Mayor Tania Tapsell in Rotorua and MP Oriini Kaipara who highlighted Maori values.

“The Maori people are very connected to their community and roots.

“Something at the forefront of my mind throughout the trip was how can we, as young people, and as a community, carry these lessons forward? And how do we draw that line in the dirt, were we can restore those partnerships with our own Indigenous history, and make our multicultural society stronger than before?

Play Fearless: Positive mindsets In 2025, RGS connected with Dan Haesler, an internationally recognised performance and leadership coach, author and key speaker, to explore mental skills training for our students, staff and parents. Specialising in mindset, mental skills, and leadership – working with athletes to corporate executives, Dan can now include RGS students alongside his coaching of other athletes including Australian Olympians and Penrith NRL players.

RGS started a connection with Dan Haesler at the start of 2025, when he visited the School to speak with students, staff, and parents.

From these session, 26 students nominated to participate in the Play Fearless Online programme – a self-paced mental skills training system designed for athletes, coaches, and support networks to enhance mindset and performance. Developed by Dan, it combined video coaching sessions, reflection activities, and research-backed techniques used by elite athletes.

RGS Director of Co-Curricular Mr Todd Wells said throughout the year, students met fortnightly to preview lessons before viewing coaching sessions and completing reflective activities.

“They would then meet with Dan online to go through the key concepts for each module,’’ Mr Wells said.

The programme was structured into key modules: • Module 1: Foundations – Focuses on identity and mindset, helping athletes decouple self-worth from performance, clarify values, and set goals.

• Module 2: Habits & Preparation – Explores the role of habits in building mental resilience and sustaining peak performance.

• Module 3: Pre-Competition – Teaches strategies to quiet the inner critic, manage nerves, and enter competition with confidence.

• Module 4: During Competition – Emphasises owning critical moments, maintaining focus, and applying mental skills under pressure.

• Module 5: Post-Competition – Covers mental recovery, reflection, and learning from experiences to build long-term growth.

Mr Wells said the full programme included 21 coaching sessions, 20 plus reflection exercises, and lifetime access to tools for creating new habits.

“It was accessible via app or web and designed for athletes at any level, from emerging talent to elite professionals, providing a proven framework to elevate performance inside and outside the arena,’’ Mr Wells said.

“We hope to incorporate components of Play Fearless across the School’s Co-Curricular programme into the future, as well as providing this opportunity to students again in 2026.”

We learned that a mistake only lasts three seconds, leaving plenty of time to reset and play our best. It also reminded us to focus less on proving ourselves and more on improving ourselves.”

• Kurt Lynch (Year 11): “I gained many skills to help me prepare, perform and recover better, both mentally and physically. This will hopefully help me perform better in the future. I now know how to control my emotions when things don’t go our way.”

• Imogen Appleton (Year 9): “A key takeaway for me from the Play Fearless programme was learning to focus on maintaining a positive mindset, and letting go of the negative ones that might try creep in.

Throughout netball, I plan to apply a positive mindset when I make a mistake, as I will take one moment to reset, breathe, refocus, and work hard. One other thing I learned was to accept the phrase, pressure is a privilege, as I hope to use it as motivation rather than a worry or setback.”

• Riley McDonald (Year 12): “The mental side of sport probably isn’t focused on enough in sport. To have this programme at the school was a great opportunity to learn more about how to be successful on the mental side of sport. Not only does it help with sport but there were many take aways that can also be used in everyday life.”

RGS rowers wrap up 2026 season The 2025 season was one to remember for the RGS rowing team, with outstanding performances at local, regional, and State levels.

From Term 2 onwards, the rowers hit the water with determination, welcoming many new members and quickly building momentum. Throughout the year, the team travelled across Australia to compete, including the Nationals in Tasmania, the North Queensland Championships in Townsville, the Central Queensland Regatta in Bundaberg, and the Queensland School State Championships in Brisbane.

Their commitment and hard work paid off with an impressive 45 medals earned across state and regional competitions: 16 gold, 17 silver, and 12 bronze. The Year 7 rowers also made their mark proudly representing the School in Bundaberg against other Year 7 crews from across the region. This season has showcased not only the team’s strength and skill but also their resilience and spirit. Congratulations to all our rowers on a truly exceptional year!

Medal winning swims RGS students Ashton Rodgers, Oliver Lau, and Jaime Liu have proven their swimming ability against some of Queensland, and Australia’s, leading swimmers.

At the School Sport Australia 10-12 years Swimming Championships in Ballarat, Victoria, RGS students Oliver Lau (Year 7) and Jaime Liu (Year 5) represented Queensland.

Oliver, selected as one of the Queensland team captains, competed in 12 finals. He won an individual gold (100m backstroke) and three relay medals (1 gold and 2 silver).

Jamie won an individual bronze (100m butterfly) along with 1 silver and 1 bronze medals for team relays.

At the Queensland Open Water Championships at Coolum in October, Year 10 student Ashton Rodgers won the 16 years 7.5km open water race. Ashton also placed third in the Men’s Open 7.5km open water race.

RGS cricketers were busy with representative duties. In Cairns, Year 12 graduate Sam Gassman joined the winning North Queensland open men’s cricket team that won all three matches against South Queensland. Joining the CQ Under-18 women’s team at the NQCA Under 18 Female Trials in Mackay were RGS Year 11 students Adelaide McArthur, Evan Sullivan, and Olivia Paine.

RGS was represented by one Senior Girls and two Junior Girls teams in the Rockhampton and District Secondary Schools Futsal competition. The Junior teams played gave it their all each week, unfortunately missing the finals, however the Senior B division girls team played St Ursula’s in their division grand final, going down 5-2. Year 10 student Mila Kronk was RGS player of the final.

RGS rowers delivered some amazing results at the NSW Sprint Championships in Penrith.

RGS returned home with 3 gold medals and 1 bronze medal: Gold – Under 16 Girls Quad Gold – Under 16 Boys Single Gold – Under 16 Boys Double Bronze – School Boys Single

RGS was represented by six teams at the annual All Schools Touch competition on the Gold Coast, the biggest schools touch competition in the world.

The Open Boys team reached the final 16 round before going down by 1 try against Miami State High School. Several other teams narrowly missed the finals, but all teams posted some wins at the carnival.

In Term 4 water polo action, RGS Red won the Junior Mixed division with an 11-1 grand final win over St Brendan’s College. In the Senior Girls grand final, RGS went down to St Ursula’s College while the Senior Boys played third overall after a play-off win against The Cathedral College. RGS Junior and Senior water polo teams will return to the RGS Pool for Rockhampton District Secondary School water polo in Term 1, 2026.

RGS entered two Senior Girls and one Senior Boys team in the Rockhampton and District Secondary Schools Volleyball competition in Term 4. With many new players to the sport, it was a learning curve for many of the players, but the RGS students kept working on their game each week.

The final word Glen Gerreyn, founder of The HopeFull Organisation, once again delivered an inspiring and energetic talk to RGS Year 11 students as they strive to find that spark that makes them keep looking to the future.

Internationally certified speaking professional Glen Gerreyn returned to The Rockhampton Grammar School this term, engaging Year 11 students in his transformative Day of Hope program.

Gerreyn, an acclaimed TEDx presenter and author, has been visiting RGS for several years and continues to evolve his sessions to meet the needs of each new cohort.

This year’s programme centred on three key themes: identity, critical thinking and resilience.

The first session encouraged students to reflect on who they are and where they are heading. The second challenged common misconceptions and the propaganda young people encounter daily, prompting them to think more deeply about themselves and the world around them. The final session focused on developing resilience and learning to handle failure constructively.

“This year level is exceptional – super talented. Asking lots of questions,” he said. “I’ve not seen a cohort like this at Rockhampton Grammar. They’ve been so engaged. They’re sitting through what ends up being a six-hour lecture on the edge of their seats.”

For Gerreyn, that level of engagement is energising. “It’s a buzz for me, seeing their lights turn on. Parents say it, teachers say it, and then when I say it, suddenly the penny drops.”

With 25 years of experience and more than 300 schools visited annually, Gerreyn shows no signs of slowing down. Looking ahead, he hopes to expand his reach further into Southeast Asia.

His message to students was simple: take action now. “They’ve been given the tools. You can take a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink — we’ve got to get them to drink.”

Gerreyn noted that this year’s Year 11 cohort stood out.
