Welcome to Volume 7.0! From all of our staff here in Tempe, Arizona, let me thank you for being an enthusiastic supporter of our brand. Our commitment is to bring you the highest performing mobile products on the market. In 2015, we broke all the records… We are launching an all-time high 95 NEW products! I am proud to say that many of these are ground breaking, class leading and the result of YEARS of research, development and investment. Rockford Fosgate has always prided itself on delivering the best and the new T3 “Super Woofer” represents that at an extreme level. At 19” in diameter, with a double 5” voice coil and proprietary motor structure, the T3 re-defines the Super Woofer category. Drew Kallen, our head of loudspeaker engineering, summed it up the best, “Not only does it deliver crushing SPL, but it goes extremely low with very little distortion. The first “SQ/SPL” woofer ever developed is a true ground breaking product.” The new T2 and T1 Slim families of woofers continue the T3 ultra performance parameters. The new T2 is available in 16” and 13” formats and is destined to be the choice of sound quality and SPL aficionados. The T1 Slim is the first woofer to give you the BASS response and POWER handling of a larger format woofer in a slim, easy to install footprint Our largest family of product introductions is in the Moto/Marine category. Too often, consumers are stuck with taking car products to their boats, motorcycles and side-by-sides. This results in less than ideal reliability and longevity in these harsh environments. This year we have introduced the new Power Mini and Punch amplifiers in a Moto/Marine configuration. These amplifiers have specially designed circuit board and coatings to prevent issues in high moisture environments. In addition to the new amplifiers, we are introducing a complete line of affordable, high performance full range speakers and subwoofers. These new Prime M0 and M1 products feature UV resistant materials for long life in harsh environments. At the statement level of Moto/Marine is the new horn-loaded 8” wake tower speaker. This is the loudest wake tower speaker we have tested and one of the lightest! It features a proprietary 8” horn-loaded driver with neo-magnetics. Lastly, we are proud to announce our new Digital Media Centers. These 3 models offer complete control over your digital media via a full color display, a built in AM/FM tuner, SiriusXM ready, Bluetooth, multi-zone controls and high performance audio outputs. The new PMX line is UV/Salt/Fog resistant and designed for the Moto/Marine environment. Thanks again for your passionate support of Rockford Fosgate! Enjoy Volume 7.0! Bill Jackson – President/CEO

A respected reputation means everything. People hear a name and almost instantly create a picture in their minds of what it means. Given the reputation Ford has for quality trucks, including the legendary Raptor model, not much else needs to be said. But we’ll start here anyway as the all-new redesigned 2015 aluminum body F150 was chosen as a base vehicle. Brian’s attitude and standards set the style and tone for the build, while choosing Rockford as a premiere partner.

SPEAKER PLACEMENT A great sounding audio system surrounds you with rhythm, melody, harmony, and timbre so you hear the composition as the artist intended. Speaker placement is an important aspect to this, and a few guidelines will help you optimize placement in your vehicle without expensive test equipment. VEHICLE CHALLENGES Home theater systems are the ideal setup. A couch is centered between a set of speakers, allowing audio from each cabinet to arrive at your ears at the same time. By contrast, many automobiles have inadequate sound quality because manufacturers tend to place speakers where they fit easily, instead of where they perform best. In a driver or passenger seat, one or more speakers are positioned to the far left or far right of your seating position, so the audio arrives at your ears at different intervals.

SPEAKER PLACEMENT Stage Depth and Imaging is an important factor to great sound quality. Your goal is to achieve a sound stage that originates in front of the listener as if you were at a concert. The musical instruments should develop across the horizon and reach to the far left and far right of the dash, with the depth ideally reaching far beyond the interior of the vehicle.

01

Speaker Angle has an effect on sound quality due to the wavelengths of sound originating from a speaker. Tweeters and midrange are susceptible because their wavelengths are short compared to subwoofers. The diagram in Fig. 01 illustrates sound propagating from On-Axis with the driver/passenger compared to an Off-Axis configuration. In Fig. 02, the frequency magnitude difference of a T4652-S tweeter is shown On-Axis (green) compared to just 30-degrees Off-Axis (red). The “ideal” configuration is facing speakers toward the listeners, but we know this isn’t always practical. Therefore, custom door panels or kick panels can help optimize speaker position.

On-Axis Response Off-Axis Response

COAX VS. COMPONENT SYSTEMS

02

Coaxials and Component Systems have tradeoffs with regard to sound quality versus convenience. Coaxial speakers contain a midrange driver with a tweeter (or two) mounted directly in front. They are easy to install because only one speaker and set of wires is needed. A component speaker contains a separate tweeter and midrange drivers, usually accompanied by an external crossover. Components have better sound quality but are more difficult to install because there are two sets of drivers and wires to install.

03

Phase can also affect sound quality with adjacently crossedover speakers like component systems. When speakers produce sound, they vibrate back and forth, and when “In Phase,” they move in the same direction at the same time. Conversely, when speakers are “Out Of Phase,” one moves in the opposite direction, causing acoustical cancellation. Typically, crossovers create phase shift and are compensated for in the design. Therefore, it’s best to keep the tweeter within 2” of the midrange as shown in Fig. 03 to minimize any phase shift around the crossover frequency. For practical reasons you may need to position the tweeter higher on the listening plane and away from the midrange. If the tweeter is more than 7” away from the midrange, it may be out of phase alignment. Listen to the system with and without the tweeter polarity reversed and use the configuration that sounds the best.

Frequency Magnitude

Component System Speaker Distance SUMMARY

Attempt to position speakers where they maximize direct (on-axis) response with the listeners. Use better quality Component System speakers in the front for the main listening stage, and keep the tweeter and midrange close together. Follow these simple guidelines and the quality of your audio system will make every song feel like you’re at a concert. VOLUME 7.0

See, the residents surrounding Ogden Valley work long and hard, so when the weekend or holidays roll around, they drop their boats in the water and get out to their favorite spot in the lake to relax, unwind and shake off the tension gathered all week. The same way you or I might hit the river or lake where we live, or even in the ocean along the coast. Boating is a pastime that many of us look forward to all week long. Heck, it might just even be our full time passion! 11

Steve tells us, “The lake is THE place to be,” and that during the season, “…everyday is a holiday!” With upwards of 50 boats linking up side to side, what you end up with is a floating block party! Word is definitely out on the quality of Rockford products. Steve is a member of the “Ogden Pineview Yacht Club,” where he swears the main goal is to party and have a good time, and the only races they have are who’s going to get to the cooler first! While Steve inherited his love for boating from his father, Brady came into the game later in life, but once he ‘got it’, he was hooked! After overcoming his fear of water and not being able to swim, he bought his first boat a few years back to test the waters. Most recently he teamed up with a local boat dealership to create a sound wave machine on a 2014 Avalon 2785 Funship pontoon. This style of boat is designed specifically to party on the water. Brady laced it up with a large collection of ear goodies including a RFX5000 source unit to distribute the music properly to (8) PUNCH PM262 6” speakers and (4) PUNCH PM282-WAKE 8” wake tower speaker enclosures powered by (3) PRIME M600-4D 600 watt amplifiers. To really mix those cocktails in hand Brady decided to go with (3) PUNCH PM212S4 12” subwoofers cranked by (3) PRIME M1200-1D 1200 watt amps, (pretty much a floating wave machine). Brady tells us, “I run Rockford in my personal vehicles and highly recommend them as a quality brand for my car and boat installs.” We know when the music is playing the fun is staying, so Steve and most of the entire crew of Pineview Reservoir local boaters wipe their worries away while cranking up the volume and fun on the water. (Thanks to Brady)...Just another way the extended Rockford family feeds into us all!

REVIEW // T400X4ad AMPLIFIER REVIEW

Text & Measurement by Garry Springgay; originally published online 2014 by PAS Magazine

Whether you’re in your car, UTV, boat or riding your motorcycle, any audio enthusiast appreciates a powerful amplifier. As cars get smaller and we install stereos into a wider array of vehicle types, one thing remains constant: smaller amplifiers will become more prevalent moving forward. This fact hasn’t been lost on the product development team at Rockford Fosgate. In fact, they have developed a series of “Motorsport” amplifiers – small footprint, high power units designed specifically for these more difficult installations. In this review I’m looking at the top of the line, four channel amp in the Motorsport line, known as the Power T400X4ad. Loaded with innovations and several patented features, this extremely compact amplifier is rated at 100 watts per channel into either four or two ohm loads, and has a U.S. suggested retail price of $499.99.

FEATURES

// The T400X4ad is chock full of Rockford Fosgate technology, including a bunch of stuff you simply can’t find on any other brand. As any experienced person will attest, system setup and tuning can make or break an entire install. To make sure the amp gain settings are dialed in correctly, one of the most important features of the T400X4ad (as well as many other Rockford Fosgate amplifiers) is its patented “C.L.E.A.N.” setup system (short for Calibrated Level Eliminates Audible Noise). The amplifier is equipped with input and output clip indicators to help aid in the setup process for a trouble-free install. // Included in the box is a special setup CD. Simply play the appropriate track in your head unit and increase the volume setting until the input clip indicator lights up on the top of the T400X4ad, then reduce the output by one step. After, simply adjust the gain controls on the amplifier until the multicolor output clip indicators turn blue. That’s it. You’re done!

// If you want to tweak it a bit more to dial in some gain overlap and really perfect it, there are additional tracks on the disc and you can double check your setup by monitoring the amp output clip indicators while playing your favorite music. // Other unique features of the T400X4ad are the “Constant Power” and Class-AD topologies that work together to maximize power output into the speaker load while maintaining optimal efficiency to minimize amplifier heating. Word constraints prevent me from going into the details here, but if you’d like to know more about these technologies, there is plenty of information on Rockford Fosgate’s website. And on the subject of keeping heat under control, the T400X4ad also incorporates a special three-stage airflow system with dual fans to keep things cool.

// Of course, all the typical features are included as well, with adjustable frequency all-pass, high-pass and low-pass crossovers for both front and rear channels, and Punch equalization, which unlike a typical bass EQ, provides boost at both the TECHNICAL DATA lower and upper sections of THE FOLLOWING POWER MEASUREMENTS HAVE BEEN OBTAINED USING INDUSTRY STANDARD METHODS (1 KHZ @ 1.0% THD+N – BATTERY VOLTAGES SHOWN +/- 0.2 V). the response curve.

LISTENING

// After connecting the front channels of the T400X4ad to my reference component speakers and the rear channels bridged to a 12-inch four ohm woofer, I sit down and begin a serious, but thoroughly enjoyable evaluation of the Rockford’s sonic credentials. // As usual, my musical selections run the gamut of classical and jazz standards on audiophile labels, to well-recorded pop, rock, country and even some hip hop. Over the course of three hours, no matter what I play, the T400X4ad sounds natural, transparent and remarkably good. The amp performs with sonic excellence, reproducing natural- sounding music with good detail, and the stereo image is equally impressive. I’ve been driving the amp fairly hard for quite a while, and I note that it’s quite warm. But it stands to reason that an amp with that much power in such a small heat sink is going to get good and warm – even with forced air fan cooling. Based on what I experience, I suggest giving this amp plenty of room to breathe and dissipate heat if you really plan on putting it to work. It’s simply a good practice to follow with any amplifier.

ON THE BENCH

// On the test bench, the T400X4ad amplifier easily surpasses all of its published specifications – and most by a considerable amount. Power is almost 50% greater than advertised, and other typical specifications are equally impressive. I notice some heat buildup during bench testing as well, so giving the amp plenty of breathing room is a good idea when planning your installation.

CONCLUSION

// The T400X4ad is one of the most power-dense amplifiers I have tested to date. The amount it delivers is fantastic, but if you are going to drive it hard on a regular basis, just give it a fighting chance to rid itself of heat. It sounds great, and the special Punch EQ circuitry provides a better balance of sound when you have real world road and wind noise to overcome. It’s very well built and like other Rockford Fosgate products, should be an exceptionally reliable performer.

It gets top ratings in its class and has a long list of hungry fanatics ready to push it through its paces. Sound familiar? Obviously, we have the perfect partner for a Rockford Fosgate marriage. No, it wasn’t E-Harmony that put this couple together. It was the work of RZR owner Daniel Barney along with longtime Fosgate dealer, follower and install master Luke Gray from ‘Hardcore Car Audio’ out of Tucson, AZ. Daniel and Luke are Arizona Wildcat tailgating buddies who decided to improve on perfection. After some parking lot pre-game discussion, Luke recommended adding a pair of PUNCH PM262B 6” speakers in the front with custom enclosures, while balancing it out with a pair of PUNCH M262B-WAKE 6” wake tower speaker enclosures connected to the rear roll cage. The RZR roars with over 100hp so Luke decided on a PUNCH PM212S4B 12” subwoofer to overcome the rumble of the exhaust. Daniel scored big, as Luke’s install team dialed in the Polaris just in time for the next big game where he brought the RZR for fun and entertainment. The sound system gets its gusto from a PRIME R400-4D 400 watt amplifier capable of pushing enough power to keep the entire lot rocking when the Polaris is parked and on display during football game pre-parties. Using a RFBTAUX, Daniel simply sets the playlist off his phone and streams wirelessly across the coolers and bar-b-que for a carefree listening experience. At this game everybody is a winner.

Now in Arizona, the RZR is plated and street legal, so Daniel’s wife Silvia grabs driving duties for most local errands as well as cul-de-sac burnouts (much to the envy of the neighborhood bookclub)! During the weekend desert dirt rides, Daniel switches seats and has son Nate pilot the Polaris down some famous local trails where the inclines get intense and dust starts flying. “There’s nothing like powering up a steep rock ridge with some AC/DC thumping out Thunderstruck”, Daniel raves. “The Rockford system far exceeded my expectations and is mandatory for every time we take the RZR out.” With the marine grade speakers and subwoofer, the toughness of Rockford matches the durability of the RZR.

“It’s so nice to have a sound system I don’t have to worry about,” Daniel says. “We get this thing full of mud, dust, dirt and water and everything cleans up easy and keeps working strong.”

19

VOLUME 7.0

Daniel’s entire family of five loves the RF rockin’ RZR deeply, including his dad who decided he needed to go out and get one of his own! Next on the Fosgate hit list is Daniel’s 2012 Camaro, where Luke has his sights set yet again to add some ‘Power’ and ‘Punch’ to another family favorite. We’re going to check back in with the boys after the Camaro build, but with the Rockford RZR running strong, it might be hard to pull Daniel and the family out of the desert anytime soon!

DREW KALLEN

Director of Loudspeaker Engineering

INSPIRATION The inspiration for our new Power T1 slim fit woofer originally came directly from our dealers and installers. The common feedback was, "Slim or shallow woofers don't sound like regular woofers." Often a limitation due to their design, this was something we wanted to try and overcome by creating a slim mounting depth woofer with the characteristics of a standard depth woofer. To truly understand how to do this and to implement our design was the challenge we set for ourselves. We looked at many competitive products, as well as our own, for design input. We reviewed, analyzed, measured, and tested both subjectively and objectively many of the products available to the consumer today. Moreover, lessons learned of "what not to do" were gained from surveying the market as we better understood the negative industry comments and views toward shallow woofers that were out there.

Subwoofer verification using our in-house Klippel test equipment

PHILOSOPHY We were fervent in holding to the criteria of the design we wanted. We could not and would not compromise the high level of Rockford quality when it came to the final product. There were several stages of development where we came close to achieving the performance goals we had set, however, we stayed true to the design criteria and eventually we had a slim subwoofer that truly performed like a regular woofer. STRATEGY The T1 slim concept evolved over a very long period of time. To achieve such a lofty performance goal in such a slim mounting depth we had to think way outside of the box. The standard design of most shallow woofers was not going to come close to achieving what we wanted. We researched and developed new materials, processes, and manufacturing techniques not just to build a good "shallow" woofer, but rather a class leading, high performance woofer that just happens to be slim with "Slim" meaning one with a 3" overall mounting depth elements! MILESTONES There were several key milestones in the development process of this woofer. First was developing a unique motor design that allowed the same excursion and mechanical clearance as a woofer with twice its mounting depth. Then, a brand new material and manufacturing process had to be developed for the suspension components to achieve the low weight and fatigue resistance requirements we needed for it to produce the output we wanted and handle the power we dictated. CHALLENGES A number of challenges were encountered throughout the development process. Material and production processes were constantly being refined to optimize performance of both the materials as well as the final product. Design criteria such as high thermal capacity of the motor structure, high excursion capabilities and good cone linearity were just some of the challenges we needed to overcome. As we were working through these design challenges, we realized we had to increase the thermal capacity of the materials and improve the rigidity of the cone body assembly to stand up to the power handling we wanted the subwoofer to handle.

21

VOLUME 7.0

Additionally, figuring out how to wind the high density voice coil to get the most BL (Motor Force) proved to be a key hurdle that we eventually overcame. We realized that to achieve what we wanted in such a limited space we had to wind the voice coil not only on the outside of the former, but also on the inside. This is something no one had done before but it gave us the outcome we hoped with high power handling in a compact design.

WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT Many elements that went into this slim subwoofer are unique and proprietary to the design. The dual spider is an industry first as well as the material we developed for the surround. As we said before, we had to think way outside the box with regards to the development and design of this woofer. With many shallow woofers on the market that certainly “sound” like shallow woofers, we couldn’t let ours become another one of the masses. In the end, with our unique motor structure design, first of its kind voice coil configuration as well as its ability to produce output and handle power like a regular depth woofer, the new T1 Slim woofer performs like none other available today.

View of Rockford’s patent pending Split Yoke Motor Structure (SYMS)

Close up of the T1 Slim motor structure showcasing our patent pending EVCC (Encapsulated Voice Coil Coupling) technology

WHAT SETS IT APART FROM THE REST The pass-through motor structure and suspension components, consisting of two patent pending technologies, are unique and are probably the single most identifying component of the woofers design. Most shallow woofer's are restricted in their design by their shallow basket assemblies, thus limiting their overall excursion. We overcame this limitation by developing our Encapsulated Voice Coil Coupling technology and our Split Yoke Motor Structure. This motor structure design is what allows the woofer to have an excursion comparable to that of a regular woofer but maintain its slim mounting depth of only 3”. This product was developed under the same stringent validation and quality metrics that all Rockford products must meet before we would consider it a true Rockford product. While many companies meet the minimum industry standards when testing their products, Rockford always tests their products well beyond those base standards. We even put them through abusive power tests to simulate the same type of use any consumer is likely to put them through. This higher level of testing ensures that the product will hold up under real world applications and not just sound good in a showroom.

DEALER T H G I L T O SP PAUL YAFFE’S BAGGER NATION 2211 E Indian School Rd. Phoenix, AZ 85016

CONTACT: 602-840-4205 WEBSITE: www.baggernation.com YEARS IN BUSINESS: 30 SOCIAL MEDIA: Artist, Engineer or Icon? We think the answer is all three. Paul Yaffe stands out as an industry leader, innovator and just someone you want to be around. Yaffe is well known for his unique handiworks, but creating the “Bagger Nation” might be his best build to date. Devised almost a decade ago in the dry desert air of Phoenix, Arizona, the brand/shop/warehouse has become a focal point and “go-to” for any of your touring bike upgrades and modifications. Rockford Fosgate + Bagger Nation = rocking creations! Pick your favorite poison off the showroom floor, or log in to their website to place an order, either way the Bagger Nation has you covered. We caught up with Yaffe to get an inside look at the history and future of the Nation and what it represents. Bike building has become something of a fad for the country as of late. With too many reality shows on TV to name, it seems the shrinking population of non-bikers really appreciate the lifestyle and the finished art pieces true craftsman like Paul get to make. While raked out choppers dominated the demand

for many years, Paul tried to introduce a new niche’ for the marketplace early on with a modified modern bagger style bike. While the idea of a tricked out touring bike would take a while to catch on, the recent rise in popularity proved Paul’s trendsetting vision was right on target. The “Bagger Nation” was created as a brand to fill Yaffe’s ever-increasing customer demand. Now, with a fortified retail shop as well as distribution center and online store with hundreds of parts, kits and upgrades available, the global bagger movement continues to propagate each passing year. Paul leads the charge as The Nation appears at 20+ events each year. The legendary Sturgis, Daytona Bike Week and the Easy Rider Bike Show Tour are just a handful of stops Bagger Nation will be headlining and showcasing the collaborative efforts with Rockford Fosgate this year. This face-to-face hands-on experience gives future customers a chance to touch, feel and hear what is now possible in this booming marketplace. “It’s key for us to be out on the road at all these events,” Paul explains. “When we wheel out the sound cart that allows you to hear each system and what would work for your specific needs, the credit cards come flying out of their pockets.” Back at the retail store, the Bagger Nation “one stop shop” covers most anything you need. International print advertising, as well social media and web ads seem to draw in interest from everywhere. Retail customers get to hear what a compact power packed Fosgate system sounds like from an easy to operate countertop display or from one of the display bikes on the showroom floor. “Once they hear it, they’re hooked!” Yaffe describes. The proud new system owner can drop off their bike for custom install, or select one of a wide array of Bagger Nation complete kits to go at it themselves. Paul notes that his full line of complete install kits are a great addition for “car-only” type retail shops that are looking to increase their offerings and get a leg up on the competition.

LUCKY ENOUGH TO START EARLY “ONI’VEWITHBEENROCKFORD FOSGATE AS A STRATEGIC

PARTNER,” RECALLS YAFFE. “I GET TO GO WORK HAND IN HAND WITH THE R&D TEAM ON DESIGNING PURPOSE SPECIFIC COMPONENTS THAT FIT THE UNIQUE NEEDS FOR THIS MARKET. IT’S REALLY A DREAM COME TRUE.”

Originally, mobile audio and motorcycles went together like orange juice and toothpaste. Most biker purists could only envision the cracking sound of the V-twin breathing out of the exhaust pipes. With the growing popularity of the touring bike, comfort became a main concern, so modern amenities, (like a sound system), have been added to aid riders during long hauls in the open air. Paul was instrumental in this movement from the beginning, and really set the tone for a new trend in motorcycle audio. Rockford has been on the forefront of this drive, together with Paul, creating space saving amplifiers, speakers and even subwoofers that can fit tightly hidden within the confines of the bike without sacrificing all the storage space. This is something customers seem to come to the Bagger Nation shop for on a regular basis. Borrowing a catchphrase from a well-known mobile phone giant, Bagger Nation has been advertising their own ‘spinoff catchphrase’ promoting these new high-output, space conscious audio kits as… “The next little thing is already here!” “We have a good sized portion of our business now coming in for audio upgrades...” says Yaffe. “Rockford produces high-volume, clear non-distorted sound, coming out of a powerful yet small package. We position the speakers specifically into the bike to create a unique ‘bubble of sound’ that surrounds the rider.” “The product really sells itself,” Paul states. “People hear the

“PEOPLE

HEAR THE DIFFERENCE IN THE QUALITY AND THEY DON’T THINK TWICE TO PULL THE TRIGGER.”

difference in the quality and they don’t think twice to pull the trigger. It’s one of the most cost effective upgrades they can make.” Nice… Paul and the crew from Bagger Nation scan the marketplace constantly, researching and even testing what’s out there. While other companies have begun to make products they ‘say’ they are targeting towards this segment of the marketplace, Rockford dominates the field. “Anytime you open people’s eyes to what’s possible, it’s going to catch on and you’re going to get imitators. But, nobody— NOBODY does it like Rockford does.”

HIGH-OUTPUT ENCLOSURE DESIGN If you love to feel your music, a “High-Output” enclosure is a great option for generating louder bass over traditional sealed and vented designs. The key to maximizing SPL (Sound Pressure Loudness) in a high output enclosure is optimum vent area, proper vent location, and accurate tuning frequency. It’s not just an enclosure with a “slot port”. The graph in Fig. 01 illustrates the response characteristics between a sealed, vented, and a high-output enclosure.

01 VENTING THE ENCLOSURE In all vented enclosures, the subwoofer system resonates like a tuning fork at the Fb (tuning frequency). Here, the subwoofer is at its lowest excursion while the vent produces nearly all the output. For this reason, the vent on HighOutput enclosures should be designed for maximum airflow and placed on the same side as the subwoofer(s).

DESIGN GUIDELINES There are many variables and calculations when designing a High-Output enclosure. If building from scratch, it’s best to run the subwoofer’s Thiele/ Small Parameters in a computer aided software program. Use the highlighted attributes in Fig. 02 as your “ideal” guidelines. We Sealed realize size restrictions may cause you to make Construction Easy compromises, so do the best you can. Keep an eye on “cone excursion” to prevent the spider and/or Transient Response1 Quick surround from tearing due to excessive excursion. Frequency Response

Rockford Fosgate has taken the headache out of designing your own enclosure by providing HighOutput “blue prints“ for many of its subwoofers. If you need help with the plans, our technical support can assist you at www.rockfordfosgate.com/rftech.

With over 150 Rockford shirts in his collection, it’s easy for Brent Leavitt to decide what he’s going to wear every day. Brent represents a growing trend of Fosgate fanatics, where a passion to play mixes well with work and family life. It doesn’t matter what day of the week it is, Brent’s business is bass. Although he gets paid to do what he loves, we’re certain he’s the kind of guy that would spend the whole weekend stuffed in the trunk of your car to see if he can help crank a few extra dB out of your audio system. What started as an early high school hobby quickly developed into a passion, then a career for Brent. He cut his teeth early on at Idaho’s Ideal Audio, and onto The Buzz Shop where a demo of the infamous T15Kw shook him so hard he’s still trying to wipe the smile off his face today!

He has been at it for 15 years - competing dB drag in the Super-Street class 1 & 2, as well as in Psyclone. Most recently he reached a new milestone of 154 dB coming out of his daily driver. Most times, the entire family makes the trip out together, all fitting in his competition ’03 Tahoe, so we know the vehicle is going to look, feel and work as good as it sounds… “I take a lot of pride in my fabrication work and love creating something fresh for people to enjoy, especially my family,” Brent tells us. Brent bought the ’03 Tahoe with this specific build in mind. “I didn’t care about cost or how long it would take, I just

29

wanted to get it how I wanted it,” Brent said. The truck is anchored with (2) POWER T2S2-16 16” subwoofers in a custom back LED lit enclosure which displays an amazing array of exterior electronics including (1) POWER T600-4, (1) POWER T1000-4 and (4) POWER T2500-1bdCP amplifiers. Nicely in line under the amps are 6 additional batteries with another 2 under the hood. Adding 2 extra engine alternators helps push out 700 amps that power up everything in a timely manner while an electronic switching system can disconnect and segregate items for maximum pump while retaining vehicle fuel efficiency.

MOST RECENTLY HE’S BEEN RUNNING HIS OWN PROGRAM AT “LOW- NOTES” GARAGE WITH A NEW PARTNERSHIP DEVELOPING AT THE “SOUND DEPOT.” ALL THIS BUSINESS JUST PAYS THE BILLS FOR THE FUN, WHERE BRENT GATHERS WITH HIS FELLOW “BASSHEADS” FROM TEAM “DEF – J” PUSHING AND SUPPORTING EACH OTHER IN COMPETITION. Brent took an equal amount of time working on the LED lit enclosures for the truck doors where they house (4) POWER T3652-S 6.5” component speaker sets in the front and a single additional set in the rear doors… (for now). A really unique feature is the line of enclosed tweeters off the component set built into the roof pillars where we see the same level of detail including mesh grilles, LED lights and Rockford logos. Brent has been getting such good response with his custom RF logos, (like the one centered on the back of this enclosure), that he’s stockpiling requests from fanatics across the country anxious to complete their new Rockford system builds. We love seeing new items come outta Brent’s creative mind and can’t wait for the next build! “I’ll never be done,” Brent continues, “Rockford has been a leader since the beginning and I’m happy to be part of the Fosgate family. Badass now…and forever.”

WAYNE CONNOLLY

Product Manager

INSPIRATION A lot of us at Rockford Fosgate are very active in powersports and with the abundance of sunshine in Arizona we are able to play most year round. Through our personal experiences coupled with close interaction with the industry, we realized that there was a lack of application specific solutions in the market place. Everything that is being used had been adapted from the auto industry and that just wasn’t going to work. We wanted to design and engineer products for this industry that are purpose built to withstand extreme conditions. They also needed to be easy to use, feature rich and application specific friendly. To accomplish this, everything needed to be looked at from materials being used, environmental test conditions and even aesthetics during development to make these Element Ready.

ERIK GUNDERSEN

PHILOSOPHY Our main goal was keeping the customer in mind and where the product was being used. The power-motorsports category brings extreme conditions that the units need to withstand. Functionality along with ease of use is very important while driving in extreme conditions, especially when concentration is demanded all the time. The use of dedicated buttons, simplified zone controls and easy to navigate sub-menus help keep their eyes looking ahead. These units needed to be feature rich along with feature specific, relative to their intended use to make these units like no others in the market.

Dir. of Advanced Product Engineering

STRATEGY We did a lot of customer and market research by talking to the people living the powersports lifestyle and getting additional feedback while attending industry shows. The feedback from consumers and manufacturers alike was instrumental in letting us know what has worked in the past and more importantly, what hasn’t. Things like the ease of operating a radio with gloves on and the short comings of current products designed for automobile use that have been adapted are a couple of examples of this. New standards were created to include testing in specific environments like the desert, tundra, forest and swamp. All of the units would need to withstand the extreme heat and cold, salt spray, corrosion, humidity, water spray ingress, UV and abrasion testing to bear the Element Ready tag.

MILESTONES We set three milestones for this project. First was defining a feature list that was application specific utilizing market research and competitive analysis. Next was to design a custom GUI and operating system in-house with speed and ease of use as the main focus for the end user. Off the shelf operating systems would not work and the creation of our own custom system was necessary to accomplish this. The key to ease of use is having minimal sub menus while still providing full functionality. Lastly, all the units needed to pass stringent certification and validation testing that we set. Currently they pass more certifications and validation testing than any other Rockford product. CHALLENGES The biggest challenge was in the mechanical design. Maintaining tight tolerances during this phase along with the use of wet-bond epoxied screens, water proof rotary encoders, O-rings and UV resistant gaskets was critical to help with eliminating water intrusion and dust proofing. Conformal coated boards are essential in corrosion prevention. Selecting the right screen was another challenge for us. It needed to be user friendly and easily seen at high noon in full desert sun. An ultra-bright TFT display with integrated control was used to overcome our concerns. Response time and the distance used for multiple remotes was a difficult task. This required us to create a custom operating system and hand selecting hardware to ensure speed and responsiveness.

31

VOLUME 7.0

Additionally, since a small form factor was needed, we did not want to sacrifice the feature set of the units so a new amplifier chip set was identified and used. To make sure heat wasn’t an issue, an extensive thermal dynamic analysis was conducted to determine the best component placement and the proper amount of heat sink material.

WHAT SETS IT APART FROM THE REST Our ground-up custom built GUI and operating system along with the most utilized functions getting dedicated button controls. Each unit has 2 ohm stable outputs allowing for up to (8) 4 ohm speakers to be connected utilizing the internal amplifier. This feature provides for connection to factory 2 ohm speakers increasing versatility. Our full color, ultra bright TFT screens support album artwork and channel logos while providing superb visibility in direct sun. Each unit can connect up to 3 remotes with a combined 125 ft distance away from the main unit. Additional features like multi-source, multi-zone control and the use of quality parts and materials make them truly class leading products.

PMX-2

PMX-5

WHAT MAKES THEM DIFFERENT Withstanding extended exposure to the elements, along with additional features like EEPROM memory set us apart. This type of memory eliminates the need for a constant 12V power wire eliminating battery draining dark current draw during storage. The other advantage to using the memory is the settings are stored even when the power isn’t connected. With so many possible applications and dealing with vibrations that rattle loose the traditional mounting methods, we offer multiple mounting options to alleviate these common problems. Lastly is the extreme environmental testing and certification process we put the units through. We test and certify for IPX6 water and dust ingress on faceplates, ASTM B117 salt and fog corrosion and ASTM D4329 UV certification to make sure the units provide lasting enjoyment for our customers.

K

ing Cargo, the Authorized Distributor for Latin America, needed a high performance demo vehicle to attend events. That’s where Jose Miguel Torres Álvarez of J M T Performance comes into the story. Miguel is a die-hard fanatic and just took ownership of a new 2013 Nissan Patrol King. He wanted to build a system that looked as elegant as the vehicle, and it needed to be innovative, yet functional. “We wanted to show that a big system with lots of speakers could be very loud and sound clear at the same time. Rockford Fosgate was the clear choice.” King Cargo would sponsor the build in exchange for using the demo vehicle to represent Colombia and surrounding territories. Jose started fabrication in the city of Bucaramanga and the project was completed in Barranquilla over a period of 6 months. A high output DC Power alternator was custom made to provide up to 200 amps of current to feed the system. There was also a dedicated cooling system installed for the electrical design with all power cables properly fused for each amplifier. Now that the electrical was dialed-in, Jose could switch over and focus on the audio system.

The first order of business was installing a Rockford Fosgate 3Sixty.3 signal processor connected via optical audio cable to an Apple Mac mini server with 4G wireless internet to create a personal Wi-Fi network. Entertainment videos are controlled remotely via an Apple iPad Mini. The video quality is Full-HD resolution (1080p) using HDMI so the visual display on all the LCD monitors is crystal clear. Now for the tough part of the installation… there were numerous components that needed to withstand substantial abuse and travel, so Jose decided not to leave anything to chance. He built the amplifier and speaker support system from steel using custom brackets welded to the structure. For the bass system, one large chamber was designed for the subwoofer enclosure to optimize the bass coupling effect. (4) Power Series T2D215 subwoofers were loaded into the enclosure and powered by (2) Power T2500-1bdCP amplifiers. The high frequency speaker system needed to be LARGE and LOUD, so the back hatch was filled with as many speakers as could fit. This setup includes (8) Punch Pro PP4-T tweeters powered by a Power T600-4 amplifier, (2) Punch Pro PPS4-6 midrange powered by a Power T400-2 amplifier, (4) Punch Pro PPS4-8 midrange powered by a Power T800-4ad amplifier, and last but not least (2) Punch Pro PPS4-10 midrange/ midbass speakers powered by a Power T800-4ad amplifier. Careful detail to the LED lightning was crafted into every area of the back hatch providing the best effect. All the speakers were built into custom baskets, so the entire appearance would look as spectacular as it sounded. In terms of audio quality and looks, Jose did an outstanding job of crafting a unique demo vehicle for the Latin American community that’s sure to entertain fanatics at any event or gathering.
